Zola Mae Shankle, age 89, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 17, 2012, from Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Carter County and was a daughter of the late Herman and Fina Stout Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hurshell Shankle; son, Benny Shankle; sister, Edith Elizondo; and nephew, Frederick Elizondo.

Mrs. Shankle retired from the Carter County School System after 36 years of service, where she taught the first grade at Unaka Elementary for most of her career. She was a lifelong member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church, where she was always active in all of the church activities, and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Yankosky and husband Richard of Frederick, MD; sister, Edna D
Andelet of Elizabethton, TN; grandchildren, Mary and Michael Amtsberg of Douglasville, PA, Matthew Yankosky of Frederick, MD, and Julie Yankosky of Columbia, MD; great grandchildren, Benjamin Amtsberg and Sarah Amtsberg both of Douglasville, PA, and Anthony Yankosky of Baton Rouge, LA.

The funeral service for Mrs. Shankle will be conducted at Tetrick Funeral Home, in the Chapel of Peace, on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at 7:00 PM with Rev. Richard Estep, Rev. Bill Greer and Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Special music will be provided by Janice Estep and Debra Woods. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday in Blevins Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Doyce Sheffield, Richard Lewis, William Grover, Henry White, Marvin Garland, Kenneth Shankle, Matthew Yankosky, Michael Amtsberg, and Waymon Carrier. ELIZABETHTON — Edith Elizondo, 82, of 157 Mayfield Drive, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

Edith was born in Carter County to the late Herman and Fina Stout Grindstaff. She later moved to Alton, Illinois, where she lived most of her life before returning to Elizabethton. In Alton, she retired from the Owens Glass Company after 30 years of faithful service. Edith was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church and was a Gold Star Mother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Elizondo, and her only son, Frederick Herman "Freddie" Elizondo.

She is survived by two sisters, Edna D'Andelet and Zola Shankle, both of Elizabethton, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service for Edith Elizondo will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 23, 2008, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Richard Estep and Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Janice Estep, soloist. The family will receive friends Tuesday from Noon to 2:00 P.M. prior to the service or at her residence, 157 Mayfield Drive, other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 27, 2008, in the Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Edwardsville, Illinois. Frances Arnold Campbell, 90, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach, Fla. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Eliza Stout Arnold. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton before going to Florida this month. Mrs. Campbell was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and more recently of Freedom Road Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Droke Shoe Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Campbell, November 7, 2015, and by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her daughter, Anne Campbell Davis and husband Ray, Ormond Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Rick MacLean, St. Louis, Mo., and Dr. Brett L. MacLean and wife Sheri and their four children, Dawson, Kenan, Silas and Haven of Mali, Africa; and two sisters, Pat Burleson and husband James, Johnson City, and Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton. Graveside services for Frances Arnold Campbell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Steve Davis officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY - Pat Arnold Burleson, Johnson City, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness.

Pat was a native of Elizabethton and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959. She was a daughter of the late A. J. and Eliza Stout Arnold.

Pat was a homemaker, but formerly worked as a secretary then licensed Insurance Agent with American National and Independent Life Insurance Companies. She was an ASL Interpreter for the deaf and worked with the Johnson City School System as well as various local churches.

Pat was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Women's Republican Club and former Girl Scout Troop Leader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Burleson, in 2016, a grandson, Joshua Grant Ramsey, her brother, Delmas Arnold, three sisters, Velma Roberts, Geneva White and Frances Campbell.

Pat is survived by three children, Tom Burleson and wife Nancy, Kingsport, Jamie Burleson Harber and husband Walt, Johnson City, Cyndi Burleson Ramsey, Johnson City; one sister, Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton; two grandsons, John and James Burleson, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to the nursing staff of Life Care Center of Gray for their loving care of Pat during her stay.

Madelyn Arnold Jones, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at her residence. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnold and Eliza Veda Stout Arnold.
Mrs. Jones was a 1949 graduate of Happy Valley High School and worked in the U.S. Navy Department from 1952 to 1955 before returning to Tennessee. She retired in 1999 as Deputy Clerk of the Carter County Circuit Court Clerk Office. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones was very funny, smart, helpful and loved everybody. She enjoyed spending time at the lake and with her church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dean Jones Sr., four sisters and one brother.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Kelly Anne Jones Barkley and husband David, Cary, N.C.; a son, James Dean Jones Jr. and wife Myra Little Jones, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Megan Danielle Magwood, Chapel Hill, N.C. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Madelyn Arnold Jones will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. Kenneth Jordan officiating.

Geneva Norris, 94, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013, after a brief illness. A native of Butler, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Millard and Winne McQueen Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Claude Norris; two sisters, Margery McPeake and Dorothy Livingston; and a brother, Coolidge L. Grindstaff.
Mrs. Norris was an active member of First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Watauga Academy and Tennessee State Teachers College. For twenty-seven years, she taught students at Eastside Elementary in the Elizabethton City School System. She is survived by four children: Sharon Mooney and husband Neil of Bristol, TN; Lynn Norris and wife Jatana of North, SC; Beverly Miller and husband Rusty of Atlanta, GA; and Steve Norris and wife Janie of Knoxville, TN.
Mrs. Norris loved and adored her nine grandchildren: Kevin Mooney of Bristol, TN; David Mooney and wife Becky of Kingsport, TN; Jim Norris and wife Jessica of Fort Mills, SC; John Norris and wife Michelle of Columbia, SC; Brian Miller of Richmond Hills, GA; Kelly Stephens and husband Brad of Atlanta, GA; Daniel Norris and wife Suzi of Austin, TX; Drew Norris of Chicago, IL; and Claire Conkin and husband Matt of Knoxville, TN. She loved her seven great grandchildren as well.
The celebration of life service for Mrs. Norris will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. John Bunn officiating. James Dwight Potter, 83, Gray, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 5, 2019, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Potter was born in 1936, in Johnson County, TN. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand father. He was a faithful member of Greenvale Baptist church for many years and he was a humble child of God. Mr. Potter proudly served in the US Army from 1955 until 1961 and was a Journeyman electrician with local 934 of Blountville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Gale; sister, Evelyn; and three great-grandchildren, Jaden and Leland Lothridge, and Ayden Houser.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Lee; three children, Penny Boyd and her husband Bruce, Pamela Brandon and her husband Harvey, and Mitchell Potter; seven grandchildren, Audrey Carpenter and husband Andrew, Todd Lothridge and wife Tiffany, Lindsey Boyd, Adam Lothridge, Tori Potter, Dwight "Alexander" Potter, and Henry Potter; thirteen great-grandchildren, Daniel, Noelle, Gabby, and Ruby Carpenter, Destiny, Cadence, Jordan, Riley, Rheagan, Jaylei, Addison, Hayden Lothridge, and Wyatt DeHart; and two sisters Carolyn Moody and Rose Morefield.

ELIZABETHTON - Godfrey D. "Jim" Cable, 88, Elizabethton formerly of Hampton, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late James P. and Nancy Ann Stout Cable. He had lived in Carter County since 1951. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation having worked there for 45 years. Jim was also a farmer and a beekeeper. He was a member of the Carter County Cattlemen's Association, Rittertown Baptist Church, and Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679. He was also a Shriner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Cora Alice Cable, Bertie Holloway, and Fannie Dugger and three brothers: Spencer, Howard, and Bobby Joe Cable.

Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gereel Aldridge Cable; two daughters, Carol Roberts of Elizabethton, and Teresa Brinkley and husband Bill of Jonesborough; three grandchildren, Erin Brinkley, Benjamin Brinkley and Whitney Roberts; sister-in-law Amy Smith; brother-in-law Garrett Aldridge and his wife Regina; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Stout and Rev. Dean Smith officiating. MOUNTAIN CITY - Nannie Kate Swift, age 90, of Swift Hollow Rd., Mountain City, TN went home to be with her Lord on Sunday morning July 9, 2023 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Nannie Kate was born April 11, 1933 to the late Allen and Millicent Stout. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infants; two sisters, Della Faye and Rosa Lee and two nephews, Bob and Albert.

Nannie Kate was a quiet, simple lady. She worked at Leco and Levi manufacturing for many years. Nannie Kate served with the Crewettes (wives of Johnson County Rescue Squad men) for several years. She loved to work in her flowers. She was a faithful wife and homemaker to Dearl for 73 years. Nannie Kate was a devoted member of Dewey Christian Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband, Dearl Swift; two nephews, Dean and Timmy, and sister-in-law, Babe.

The family will receive friends from 12:00–1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Mountain City Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m. with Minister C.D. Bud Gentry officiating. Graveside service and burial will follow from the Wilson Cemetery.
