Hazel Grindstaff Carlisle, age 95, of 170 Creekbank Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Hazel was born in Elizabethton to the late Noah Luther Grindstaff and Goldia Taylor Davis. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Carlisle; two brothers, William Clay Grindstaff and Roy Luther Grindstaff; and a sister, Grace Grindstaff.

Hazel retired as a nurse and was licensed in six states. She was an Assistant Director of Nursing at Regency/ Life Care Nursing Home and loved her tenure in geriatric nursing. Hazel was the oldest member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, chairman of the food committee and a member of the choir. Hazel was the last surviving member of the Unaka High School Class of 1945. She was a 67-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Sycamore #163 and the Julius Dugger Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed sewing, family, church, grandchildren, traveling and reading.

Those left to cherish Hazel’s many wonderful memories and legacy include her daughter, Debra Woods and husband Larry, of Elizabethton; her son, Joe Carlisle and wife Rhonda, of Hendersonville, TN; two granddaughters, Becky Woods Shomaker and husband Matt, of Blountville and Mindy Carlisle Moore and husband Zach, of Hendersonville, TN; two great-granddaughters, Katelyn Shoemaker and Kristyn Shoemaker; a sister, Shirley Prikals and husband Pete, of Herndon, VA; a special niece, Robin Grindstaff Hurdle, of Elizabethton and several other nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Hazel Grindstaff Carlisle will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2021, in the Stoney Creek Baptist Church with Reverend David Foster and Dr. Kenneth Jordan, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Doyce Sheffield and Dennis Laws. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the church, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside service will follow in the Grindstaff Cemetery on Creek Bank Road in the Stoney Creek Community. Active pallbearers will be Matt Shoemaker, Darren Kirkendall, Billy Kirkendall, Clay Kirkendall, Lanier Hurdle and Pete Prikals, III. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Prikals, Jr., Howard Ensor, Doyce Sheffield, Norman Scott, Keith Tolley and Kevin Lipford.

Roy Luther Grindstaff, 83, was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., on August 6, 1935, and he went to be with the Lord on November 5, 2018, at his daughter's home in Hernando, Miss., surrounded by his loving family.
Roy was a guitar player in "The Rambling Troubadours" band when he met the love of his life, Virginia Faye McCanless. Roy and Virginia dated for three years before getting married at the home of Hazel and Bob Carlisle in August of 1962. The two of them spent the next 56 years together; they were best friends, traveling companions and co-conspirators.
Roy was a retired electrician; he was a member for over 60 years of the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, Local Union 429. He used to say that IBEW stood for "I've Been Everywhere." He and Ginny traveled all over the country, raising two children, while he worked for the IBEW, including working on the World Trade Center. He called the IBEW's job line regularly, still looking for work.
Roy was a "yellow-dog" Democrat. He was determined to vote, and one of his proudest moments was to absentee vote in the most recent election. He voted for every Democrat on the ballot.
Roy was voted "Best Looking" of his Senior Class in 1953, when he graduated from Unaka High School (the Temple of Knowledge). He was President of his Sophomore Class and of his Senior Class. He had perfect attendance, great grades, and was a member of the football team.
He was a 50+ year Mason, now a member of the Dashiell Lodge #238 in Elizabethton, Tenn. He still proudly carries his Masonic card in his wallet.
Roy is survived by his wife and best friend, Virginia McCanless Grindstaff; his daughter Robin and her husband Lanier Hurdle; his son Randy and his wife Kathy; grandchildren, Kelsey Costa, Rachel Grindstaff, Daniel Grindstaff and Sy Hurdle; great-grandchild, Ila Ray Dewhirst; sisters, Hazel Carlisle and Shirley (Pete) Prikals; nephews and nieces, Joseph (Rhonda) Carlisle, Debra (Larry) Woods, Melissa (Clay) Kirkendall, Petris (Amanda) Prikals III, Marshall Wayne (Willie) Collins, Michael (JoAnn) Underwood and April (Johnny) Henderson; special friends, Carol Ayers and Kelly and Lynn Bowers.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Noah Costa; his parents, Noah and Golda Grindstaff; his siblings, Billy Grindstaff and Grace Grindstaff; and his beloved brother-in-law, Bob Carlisle.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Carlisle, Daniel Grindstaff, Sy Hurdle, Taylor Moore (standing in for Noah Costa), Petris Prikals III, Michael Underwood and Larry Woods. Honorary pallbearers will be Unaka High School's Class of 1953.
Roy was a lifelong member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church, where the visitation will be held on Friday, November 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor David Foster officiating. Burial will immediately follow at the Grindstaff Family Cemetery on Eggers Lane.

Ina Mae Hyder Estep, 90, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Claude & Blanche Grindstaff Hyder. Ina was a 1942 graduate of Unaka High School, where she played on the Lady Ranger Basketball Team . She worked as a Lab Technician at St. Elizabeth Hospital prior to going to work for Dr. Dillard Shoals & Dr. Cone. She worked there for 35 years.
Ina was the oldest living member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church.
IIn addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dan H. Estep, who died in 1995; by a son Rev. Richard H. "Dick" Estep, who died in 2014; two brothers: James H. & Clifford Hyder; and a sister-in-law: Lillian Hyder.
Survivors include her daughter & son-in-law: Danette & Doug Hardin; Her daughter-in-law: Jan Estep; Four Grandchildren: Jeff (Sherri) Hardin, Lance Estep, Stephanie (Donald) Ensor and Shannon (Christy) Estep; 10 Great Grandchildren: Sarah, John-Wesley, Jesse and Rebekah Hardin, Brandi, Davy and Daniel Ensor, Aaron, Carissa & Jacob Estep; Several nieces & nephews.
Graveside Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015, in the Grindstaff Cemetery with the Rev. David Foster officiating.
Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be Grandsons & Great Grandsons.

Darrell "Dolly" Egli Spake, 87, of Fallston, N.C., went to her heavenly home Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Carolinas HealthCare System-Cleveland with her loving husband by her side.
Born October 20, 1930, in Elizabethton, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Howard and Roberta Egli.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Spake.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fallston Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fallston Baptist Church with the Rev. David Blanton officiating. The entombment will follow the services in the Rose Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum, Fallston.

Rosella K. Pritchard, born January 29, 1952 in Elizabethton, Tenn., died at home on September 12, 2021.
Rosella was employed for many years at Betty’s Burger Hut.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Ray and Gertie Lipps Grindstaff; a brother, James Ray Grindstaff; and son, Stevie Hardin.
She is survived by her husband, Danny Pritchard; her daughter, Brandy Proffitt; two sisters; two brothers; and her grandson, Gavin.
Despite her health issues, Rosella posted inspirational and encouraging quotes showing her love for others and for her Savior Jesus Christ on her Facebook page.
It was Rosella’s wish to be cremated.

Danette Hardin, 77, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Daniel H. and Ina M. Estep. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Rev. Richard Estep, and a grandson, Jesse Hardin.
Those left to cherish her memories include her devoted husband of 59 years, David “Doug” Hardin; son, Jeff Hardin and wife Sherri; daughter, Stephanie Ensor and husband Donald; six grandchildren, Sarah Hardin (fiancé Weston Colbaugh), John-Wesley Hardin, Rebekah Hardin, Brandi Ensor (fiancé Chris Beach), Davy Ensor and Daniel Ensor; and a very special great-granddaughter, Allie Beach.
Survivors also include five special sisters-in-law, Jan Estep, Georgia Ellis, Carol Hardin, Vera Smith and Karen Hardin, and life-long friends, Dean and Flo Grindstaff. In addition, she is survived by many nephews and nieces.
Danette was a life-long member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church and was retired from the State of Tennessee Department of Human Services.
A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, July 24, at 1 pm. at Blevins Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by the New Liberty Quartet. Pallbearers will be selected from grandsons and nephews in attendance. Friends and family are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to express a special thank you to her grandson, Davy Ensor, for his loving care and assistance during her illness, the staff of Caris Healthcare, and all the visits and meals from family, friends and neighbors.

Rev. Richard Harvey "Dick" Estep, 69, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, Sunday December 28, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. He was a Carter County native. He was a 1963 graduate of Unaka High School where he was a member of the Ranger Football Team for four years. Richard was ordained to the Ministry by his father-in-law Rev. Homer Salyer at Hunter Memorial Baptist Church forty two years ago. He had served the following Churches: Beck Mountain Baptist Church, Dungan Chapel Baptist Church and Stoney Creek Baptist Church. He also had held several revivals during his Ministry. He also had worked at PSG for 20 years. He was a member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church. Richard was preceded in death by his father: Daniel Harvey Estep, December 7, 1995.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years: Janice Salyer Estep. Two Sons: Lance "The Duke" Estep, of the home and Shannon Estep and wife Christy, Elizabethton. Three Grandchildren: Aaron, Carissa and Jacob Estep. His Mother: Ina Hyder Estep. One Sister & Brother-In-Law: Danette & Doug Hardin, Elizabethton. Numerous nieces & nephews.
A Service Honoring the life of Richard Harvey Estep will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eric Heaton, Rev. Eric Wright and Rev. Roy Wilson (Ministers who Richard had ordained) officiating. Interment will follow in the Grindstaff Cemetery (Stoney Creek) with the Rev. Roger Haley and Rev. David Foster officiating. Music will be provided by Eric Heaton, The New Liberty Quartet and Debra Woods. Active Pallbearers will be: Aaron Estep, Desler Salyer, Roy Salyer, Doug Hardin, Jeffery Hardin, Jerry Proffitt, Jamie Buckles and Eddie Spears. Honorary Pallbearers will be: All his Nephews, Harold Bowers, Javy Taylor, Estel Taylor, Lanny White, Billy "Boo" Bishop, Ken Pierce and Ministers of the Watauga Baptist Association. The family will receive friends from 12 Noon until the service hour Wednesday. Friends may also visit with the family and the residence.
