William E. DeLoach, Clerk Superior Court of Pierce County, passed away at his home on Strickland Avenue Monday at 2:35 P.M. after an extended illness.
The deceased was born in Wayne County, Georgia, November 3rd, 1888 and when a young lad moved with his parents to Pierce County where he had since resided. He was married to Miss Mary Roberts, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Roberts in 1913. To this union were born the following children who survive him; Mrs. Juanita Colley, age 23, W. T. DeLoach, 21, Doris, 18, Burnell, 16, Mary Lou 14 – Carolyn 11 – Ray 9 – Edsel 7 – Jerry 4 and Dahlas Norene, 1 year. His wife Mrs. Mary DeLoach preceded her husband in death one year, lacking 2 days.
In 1918 Mr. DeLoach was appointed Rural Carrier from Blackshear on what was then Route number Three. He resigned this post in 1925 to accept the position of head Clerk in the Blackshear Post Office when the office was advanced to Second Class for the first time. He filled this place with distinction and credit for a period of ten years, resigning in 1935 to make the race for the office of Clerk of Superior Court of Pierce County. He was elected in June of 1935 by an overwhelming majority. He was renominated and reelected to this office in 1936 without opposition.
During the brief time he had served as Clerk he had made a lasting impression upon the public by his devotion to duty and his readiness at all times to render an accommodation of service to any who called upon him. He was one of the most efficient clerks that the people of Pierce County ever had. The deceased had served as President of the Blackshear National Farm Loan Association for several years and occupied this position at the time of death. He was also a director from Pierce County in the Satilla Rural Electrification Association. He was a member of Alabaha Freewill Baptist Church.
An outstanding characteristic of the deceased was to put his very best into whatever task he undertook.
Other than his immediate family the deceased is also survived by his mother, Mrs. J. A. DeLoach of Waycross; three brothers, J. A. DeLoach, Jr. of Atlanta; J. L. DeLoach and Taft DeLoach of Jacksonville; five sisters, Mrs. S. P. Jones, Mrs. W. R. Harrison and Mrs. L. W. White of Waycross; Mrs. L. L. Harrison of Blackshear and Mrs. J. E. Minchew of Rome, Ga.
Active pallbearers were six of his nephews, Bruce Jones, Wilbert Harrison, Walstein Harrison, Alfred Roberts, W. D. Milligan, and Dr. Samuel Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers were Harvey D. Griffin, J. R. Walker, Jr., H. M. Carter, L. W. Peacock, L. E. Sweat, L. J. Cason, C. H. D. Youmans, L. B. Smith, A. V. Brown, all of whom were County officials and J. Q. James, A. B. James, H. D. James, J. B. Bennett and S. G. Bowen.
Funeral services were held in the Blackshear Baptist Church at 3 P.M. October 18th and conducted by Rev. Lester Dixon, a life long friend and Reverend Carswell Milligan, a nephew of Savannah. Interment was in the Blackshear Cemetery.
William married Mary Annie Roberts on 30 Nov 1913 in Pierce County, , , Georgia.
