    OSCAR SHULL, 54, of 3017 Sumner Ave., Hoquiam, Wash., died Feb. 10, at a hospital there. He had been ill since October.

    A native of Neva, he went to Washington 27 years ago, and was employed at a plywood plant for a number of years. He was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles lodge and the Plywood union.

    He is survived by his wife, Polly Stout Shull; two daughters, Mrs. Don Bell, Central Park, Wash. and Mrs. Ordell Ellefson of Aberdeen, Wash., and five grandchildren; three brothers, W. H. of Springfield, Ore., Roby of Neva, and Charles of Virginina; five sisters, Mrs. W. F. Fritts, Mrs. N. C. Parsons, Mrs. Lillie Grandstaff and Mrs. J. R. Hicks, all of Tennessee, and Mrs. W. A. Kasman of Norfolk, Va.

    The funeral was held Feb. 12 at Elerding Chapel in the Washington city, with Rev. Newt Rasor officiating. Interment was in Fern Hill Cemetery.

    Pallbearers were George Fritts, Wiley Fritts, Charley Logan and Vallie Mink.

    MOUNTAIN CITY — Joe C. Shull, age 89, of 517 Mill Creek Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2005, at the Mountain City Care Center following a brief illness. He was born in Mountain City, Tennessee, on June 30, 1916, to the late Roby and Addie Arnold Shull. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Ward Shull, who passed away on August 7, 1999, and one brother, John D. Shull. Joe was a 1935 graduate of Johnson County High School. Joe was a retired farmer and former owner and operator of Mill Creek Grocery. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he also served as Sunday School Superintendent and was a member of the choir. Joe was a member of the Neva Ruritan, Neva Volunteer Fire Department and served as Johnson County Road Commissioner for a number of years. Joe was a renowned storyteller and he enjoyed football and racing. Joe is survived by two sisters, Mary Lee Shoun, of Springfield, VA, and Jacquelin Mink and husband, George, of Portsmouth, VA; one brother, Earl Shull and wife, Louise, of Mountain City, TN; sister-in-law, Alma Worley, of Mountain City, TN, several nieces and nephews and many, many dear friends. Funeral Services for Joe C. Shull will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 2005, from the Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Swift and Rev. Jim Norman to officiate. Music will be under the direction of the Pine Grove Baptist Church Choir. Graveside Services and Interment will follow from the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be: Sam Cress, Steve Cornett, Terry Hodge, Chris Lang, Francis Scherier, Barry Watson, Richard Watson and Randy Wilson.     Earl D. Shull, age 92, of 126 Slemp Branch Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away at the Johnson City Medical Center on Monday, April 19, 2010.

    He was a son of the late Roby and Addie Arnold Shull. Mr. Shull was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist, where he served as Trustee, Sunday School Secretary, Finance Committee, Pleasant Grove Cemetery Committee, Building Committee and was a member of the choir.

    He also was a member of Neva Ruritan, Neva Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Johnson County School Board, Johnson County Commissioner, Johnson County Road Committee, Former Chairman of the Johnson County Soil Conservation District Board. Earl loved farming and Tennessee football.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Shull and Joe Shull.

    Survivors include: his wife, Louise McQueen Shull, of Mountain City, TN; three daughters: Patsy Eller and husband, Edgar, of Todd, NC, Barbara Simcox and Linda Brown and husband, Junior, all of Mountain City, TN; two sons: Tom Shull and wife, Judith, and Terry Shull and wife, Betty, all of Mountain City, TN; two sisters: Mary Lee Shoun, of Washington, DC, and Jacqueline Mink and husband, George, of Portsmouth, VA.; grandchildren: Scotty Eller, Jim Shull, Michael Simcox, Celeste Simcox-Dunn, Steve Brown, Mechelle Arney, Jonathan Shull; great grandchildren: Eli, Isaiah and Emma Eller, Sam and Izzy Dunn, Megan and Caleb Brown, Will, Myles and Brady Arney and Noah Shull; Several nieces and nephews along with too many friends to name also survive.

    Funeral Services for Earl D. Shull will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2010, from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. James Norman officiating. Music will be provided by Jim Norman and the Pleasant Grove Choir.

    Graveside service and interment will be held in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery following the service. Active pallbearers will be Scotty Eller, Dwayne Arney, Steve Brown, Jim Shull, Jonathan Shull, Michael Simcox and Roby Dunn.     Ms. Ruth Grindstaff, of 5468 Roan Creek Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at her residence.

    Ruth was a Johnson County native where she had lived all her life. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Lillie Shull Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers: Don Grindstaff, Robert Grindstaff and A.D. Grindstaff; and a sister, Hazel G. Jones.

    She was a Graduate of Johnson County High School and East Tennessee State University; she taught school in Johnson County for 45 years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Johnson County. She was active in the Neva Elementary School PTA.

    Ruth enjoyed being outside and working in her garden and flowers and she also loved quilting and sewing. She was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, where she at one time taught the primary Sunday school class.

    Survivors: one sister, Rosa Ward, Mountain City, Tennessee; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral Services for Ms. Ruth Grindstaff will be conducted on Sunday, January 6th, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. from the Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Penley, Rev Carl Swift, Rev. Rick Thomason and Dr. Dan Little officiating. Music will be under the direction of Roy Roach and Patty Watson.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

    Graveside service and burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Charlie Grindstaff, Danny Grindstaff, Justin Grindstaff, Robert Cunningham, Jerry Grindstaff, Benny Grindstaff, Blake Grindstaff, Travis Grindstaff, Dakota Grindstaff, Joe Grindstaff, Billy Ward, Mark Ward, Wayne Vaught, Joshua Vaught, Donnie Hampton and Charlie Cutlip. In addition to her parents, Rosa is preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, R.V. Ward in 1990; her son Billy Dwight Ward in 1995; sisters, Hazel and Ruth Grindstaff; brothers, Don, Bob and A.D. Grindstaff; nephew James Snyder.

    What Granny loved most was working in her vegetable garden and canning the fruits of her labor, milking the cows, and just being outside. Granny loved watching game shows. She enjoyed playing checkers, reading her Bible, ice cream, and the smell of roses, which were her favorite flower.

    Services for Rosa will be held at 2pm on Friday, March 29, 2019, at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Neva, TN. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm – 2pm prior to the service. Internment will follow services at Mast Cemetery. Rev. Mike Penley will officiate the services.

    MOUNTAIN CITY — William Barton 'Bart' Fritts, age 76, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Johnson County Community Hospital.

    He was born on June 14, 1935 to the late Oscar and Nell Wagner Fritts.

    In addition to his parents, Bart was preceded in death by his first wife, Teresa Fritts, and a brother, Glenn Fritts.

    Bart was a former United States Postal Chief and was a Vietnam Veteran having served in the United States Marine Corp. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

    Bart is survived by his wife, Edith Fritts; daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette and Leon Humphrey of Watauga, TN; grandchildren: Robert McIntyre and wife Crystal, Tiffany Crawford and Leon Humphrey Jr., all of Elizabethton, TN and Vance Crawford and wife Jessica of Telford, TN, Virginia Andes of Greeneville, SC; great grandchildren: Dominic, Jaden, Jaren, Elijah, Brianna and Jacob Carter.

    The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012 at Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell and Pastor Norm Reece to officiate.

    Graveside Service and Interment with Military Honors will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Dyson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard, who will also be serving as active pallbearers.

    Paul Fritts, Jr. age 72, went to be with the Lord on November 14, 2021. He was a member of Limestone Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a trustee for many years. He was very active in the church helping with the youth, the high school Sunday School class, and annual Youth Retreats. He graduated from Johnson County High School in 1966. After graduation, Paul went to work for Pharmaseal Laboratory where he was a supervisor. Then he was called to serve his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War where he earned the Bronze Star. Later, his work called him to be a supervisor of Environmental Services at the Veterans Hospital where he worked until his retirement. He loved fishing at the “BigRock,” UT football and helping “his boys.” Most of all he loved God’s word.
    He was a very loving husband, father, and Papaw to his family. He will be greatly missed.
    He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul Fritts, Sr. and Laura Campbell Fritts; his sister, whom he loved very much, Betty Jo Bowers.
    He is survived by his wife, Judy Bailey Fritts; two sons, Paul Steven Fritts and wife Scarlett and Brian David Fritts and wife Melissa; six grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremiah, Emily, Journee, Alexis and Nevaeh Fritts; Brother, whom he loved so much, Jim Fritts and wonderful in laws and their families, his loving Church family and friends, and special grand dog “Gizmo.”

    The family would like to thank Ms. Kim Hoyle and Dr. Tumker and the caring staff of the TN Cancer Center for all their care. Dr. Tran and all the doctors and nurses who cared for him at Johnson City Medical Center.
    The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 – 7 pm at Limestone Free Will Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7 pm with Rev. David Reece, Rev. Tim Roach, Rev. Tim Broyles and Rev. Gary Gentry officiating.

    JONESBOROUGH - Mr. Lowell H. Stout, age 85, Jonesborough, completed his life Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Because of his belief in God and Jesus, we believe he will dwell in the Kingdom of God forever and ever.

    He was born June 5, 1935 to the late Clyde and Mae Fritts Stout in Doeville, TN. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Nadia Stout, and brother, Dr. Bill Stout.

    After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Stavanger, Norway, a county he dearly loved. After serving his county, he was employed by Air Products in Bari, Italy. He returned to the United States and retired from the Bailey Co. in Piney Flats. He was a hardworking, dependable employee. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

    Survivors include a brother, Bobby Stout, Elizabethton; nephews, Bryon Stout, Elizabethton, Mike Stout, Charlotte, NC and Roger Stout, Athens, Alabama; and a niece, Cathy Stout, Denver, Colorado.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Noel, for the great home care and his long-time friends, Ben Clark, Ray Barcel, James Storey and Brandon Tittle.

    Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 am Friday, February 26, 2021 at Mountain Home National Cemetery.

    Mr. James Thomas 'Tom' Shull, age 74, passed away peaceably at his home on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 following 6 years of being confined to the home with various health issues.

    He attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he was a member. He was a charter member of Neva Ruritan Club and Neva Fire Department, where he was past Chief.

    Tom was preceded in death by his father and mother, Earl and Louise Shull, brother, Terry Shull, sister and her husband, Linda and Junior Brown.

    Tom is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith Eggers Shull, son, Jim Shull, two sisters, Pat Eller and husband Edgar Eller and Barbara Simcox, sister-in-law, Betty Shull, a number of nieces and nephews, special friends, Skip Wills, Bill Wilson and the Men's Sunday School Class of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, who brought Sunday School to him for the past three years.

    It was Mr. Shull's request to be cremated and his ashes scattered on the family farm. There will be no formal services.

    Barbara Earl Shull Simcox, age 79, went to be with the lord Monday, January 30, 2023 at Hillview Nursing home. Barbara was born on December 11, 1943, in Mountain City to the late Earl and Louise Shull. Barbara was preceded in death by her sister Linda Brown, her two brothers Tom Shull and Terry Shull, her son-in-law Roby dunn, her ex-husband Jabin V (Ben) Simcox, and her precious caregiver Darlene Orndorff.

    Before graduating from JCHS in 1961, She was very involved in school and was cheer captain. She continued to be close to her classmates until her death, planning her class reunions every year for more than 20 years. She was a huge Tennessee Vols Fan. It was always a family affair including KFC before the game! She attended many away games and bowl games in addition to her season tickets!


    She began working at H&R Block in 1971 and bought the Mountain City franchise in 1977. She was everyone's "tax lady" and all her clients loved her. She took pride in helping her clients in any way she could professionally and personally. She retired after 45 years. Barbara also worked for the ASCS office on the tobacco market for over 30 years. Barbara was entrepreneur. She owned Starlight Video, G&H Coin Laundry, and Shull's Farm Corn maze with her son Michael. She raised tobacco, green pepper, and catnip over the years.

    Barbara was extremely active in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She led the GA's and Acteens, sang in the choir, directed Bible School for 10 years, and directed all dramas the church produced during Christmas and Easter.

    Those left to cherish her memory are her children Michael Simcox and Celeste Simcox Dunn, her grandchildren Izzy Dunn and Sam Dunn (Hannah), and her great-grandchildren Jaxon and Sawyer Dunn. Her sister Pat Eller (Edgar), Nephews Steve Brown (Robin), Scotty Eller (Renee), Jim Shull, Mechelle Arney, Jonathan Shull (Danielle), and great nieces and nephews. Special friend, Jeanie Arnold her best friend since 5th grade.

    Linda S. Brown age 70 of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday April 26, 2017 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness, with her children by her side. She was born to Earl and Louise McQueen Shull on August 26, 1946 in Doc. Glenn's clinic in Mountain City. She was the fourth of five children. She grew up on a farm in the Neva Community. After graduating from high school, she attended Johnson City Cosmetology School. She was a retiree from Levi Strauss. She was currently employed by Samaritans Purse.

    She enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Her banana pudding and pimento cheese were bragged about by many as being the "Best they ever had." She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was an assistant Sunday-Preschool teacher for the past 25 years. She enjoyed traveling, working in her daylilies, shopping for shoes, talking with her friends, the Tennessee Volunteers (Go Big Orange), and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite color was purple.

    She proudly represented Samaritan's Purse twice in Alaska assisting Veterans and their families with Operation Heal Our Patriots. She was recently learning how to text and take selfies on her new Smart Phone.

    Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Louise Shull, her father-in-law, Albert G. Brown, her husband, Junior L. Brown, and her brother, Terry Shull.

    Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter: Mechelle Brown Arney; one son, Steve (Robin) Brown of Moore, OK; her granddaughter, Savannah Megan Brown; four grandsons, Caleb Brown, Will Arney, Myles Arney, and Brady Arney; two sisters, Barbara S. Simcox and Patsy (Edgar) Eller and one brother, Tom (Judith) Shull and her loyal dog Buddy; her grand dog Gabby, her best friend Cora Walls (who was more like a sister), her Samaritan's Purse Housekeeping sisters, and several nieces, nephews, and many special friends
