William Gordon Fenner Sr., 86, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 12, 2023, at his home. William was born in Butler, Tenn., a son of the late Samuel Clyde Fenner and Edna Mae (Farthing) Fenner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Barbara Joan Price Fenner Summerow; his son, Terry Wayne Fenner; four sisters, Linda, Ruth, Ann and Helen; and four brothers, Bob, Gene, Samuel Jr. and Paul. William started and operated his own business, W.G. Fenner, Inc. in 1959. As the owner and operator, William had installed bowling alleys all over the world, including Anchorage, Alaska, Scotland, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, New Mexico and at the White House. William had worked for AMF prior to starting his own business. William was a proud United States Marine veteran but above all else, he was a proud and loving father. He was very devoted to his children and took great pains to show them his love every day of his life. William was of the Baptist faith and loved to travel, in fact, he had visited every state except for Hawaii. He liked racing and was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Atlanta Braves, the Yankees, and the Green Bay Packers. William loved everyone and was loved by everyone. Those left to remember and cherish William’s memory include his son, William Fenner Jr. and wife Penny; three daughters, Kathy Melton and husband Rick, Connie Gray and husband David, and Willie Whitson and husband Gary; his grandchildren, Ginger, Tara, B.J., Ricky, Ashley, Torie, Chelsea, Brandon, Allison, Cindy, Peyton, Bryson and April; several great-grandchildren; his brother, Dr. David Fenner; and several special nieces and nephews. A celebration of William’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Rev. Tim Gouge officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Zion Church Choir. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Jon Shell, bagpiper, will provide music at the graveside. Military Honors will be accorded by Mr. Kelly Greene. Active pallbearers will be Rick Melton, Ricky Harding, Draven Harding, Jimmie Brown, T.J. Campbell, Lester Julian, Gary Whitson and B.J. Fenner. LAUREL BLOOMERY - Janet Shupe Rupard, age 82, passed away March 7, 2023, at her home in Laurel Bloomery. Janet was born July 2, 1940, to the late Frank and Alice Shupe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her husband of 49 years, Bobby Dean Rupard; sister, Emaline Shupe Nichols and brothers, Jimmy Shupe and Marshall Shupe.

To know her, was to love her. Janet loved to play music with her mom and was known for her baking, especially her peanut butter cookies, fudge, and delicious cakes. She loved working in her flowers, making fried apple pies and spending time with her grandchildren. She also adored her 11 grand puppies. She was loved by all the children at Laurel Elementary School who called her Granny, and she raised as her own over many years. Janet retired from the Johnson County School System after 30 years of employment as a secretary. She was also a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her son, Jeff Rupard and wife Melissa of Laurel Bloomery; daughter, Cindy Cretsinger Heck and husband Bill of Laurel Bloomery; son, Jon Rupard of Laurel Bloomery; grandchildren, Kaleb Cretsinger and Channie Cretsinger and fiancé Knox Cavitt; beloved sister, Barbara Shupe of Butler; brothers, Glen Shupe and wife Wanda of Butler; Frankey Shupe and wife Bebbie of Butler; Mitchell Shupe and wife Elwanda of Johnson City, and Benny Shupe and wife Mary of Mountain City; several nieces and nephews.

Buddy Eugene Osborne, age 84, of Mountain City, passed away on Saturday morning, March 5, 2022 at the Mountain City Care Center. He was born on November 19, 1937 in Johnson County, TN to the late Burl Osborne and Rebecca Church Osborne. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by brothers, Bill, Jack, Fred and Edgar Osborne, and sister, Linda Osborne.

Buddy enjoyed mowing grass, watching westerns, and being with his friends. He was a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Carol Lewis Osborne; sisters, Phyllis Bouchelle and husband, Duane, and Patricia Osborne; stepsons, Duane Thomas, Billy Thomas and Eddie Leathern; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Edith Louise Chappell, age 83, of Butler Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on December 8, 1935 to the late Earl S. Osborne and Bessie Maxwell Osborne.

Edith was gifted in crocheting. She has made many afghans and other crafts and crocheted outfits for teddy bears to give to children in hospitals. She retired from TASCO, where she worked as a supervisor.

Edith loved her family deeply and enjoyed the time that she had with them.

She had a special four legged friend, Toby, who Edith loved very much.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Elizabeth Stout, passed away early Tuesday morning January 2, 2018 after a brief illness.

Born in Mountain City, Tennessee on October 29, 1933, Elizabeth was raised by her loving grandparents, John and Nora Phillippi.

In addition to her grandparents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Anna Kate Adams Phillippi, sister, Peggy Phillippi Poteat and brother-in-law, Bill Stout.

She married Blaine Stout on June 17, 1952. After a four year stint in the Air Force by Blaine, the couple returned from England and settled in Boone, North Carolina to raise their three sons. Once the boys were in school, Elizabeth returned to school and became a licensed nurse and began work as a surgical nurse at Watauga County Hospital for 28 years.

After retirement, the couple settled back in Mountain City where Elizabeth became involved with the Garden Club, Red Hat Society, Rotary Club, Heritage Hall and her beloved Frist Baptist Church. There, she sang in the choir and was active in her Sunday School Class, WOM and the Bereavement Committee.

Elizabeth leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion and servanthood to her family and community. Anyone who knew her was touched by her kindness and sweetness.

Betty Jo Johnson Fritts, age 82, of Hwy 421 N., Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at her home.

She was born on October 18, 1932 to the late Walter Wynn Johnson and Nola Mae Phillippi Johnson.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Spencer Fritts; daughter, Linda Gaye Howard; sister, Mary Ann Johnson Winters; brother, Charles Johnson; son-in-law, Sammy Crosswhite, and nephew, Paul Johnson, Jr. (Bunzie).

Betty enjoyed working outside in her flower beds and gardens. She had a love for animals, especially her dogs and cats.

She loved to visit the Mountain Home National Cemetery where her husband is laid to rest and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
