Earl was the son of John Smith Oliver and Martha Jane Hilliard. His younger brother Fred served in the United States Navy during World War II.
    Distinguished Service Cross Citation:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Earl Oliver (ASN: 34885176), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 12 November 1944. On that date, Private Oliver was serving as a machine-gunner with a platoon near Kerling, France. Before dawn, a strong force of enemy tanks and infantry attacked his position, and aided by poor visibility and hilly terrain succeeded in knocking out all machine-guns except Private Oliver's. Ignoring the intense fire directed against him this brave soldier held his position, directing effective fire by the sound of the advance and the light of bursting mortar shells, even when the enemy had approached within grenade-throwing distance. He was killed by a direct mortar hit on his position, and the following morning twenty-two enemy dead were found in front of his gun; some as close as fifteen feet. Private Oliver's heroic determination and supreme, courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

On the morning of February 7th, 2022, Christine began her new life in Christ, more alive than she has ever been! Christine was born on May 14, 1923, to the late William “Bill” Jennings Bryant and Opal Vestal Oliver Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnson Hayes Eller; sister, Geraldine Smith Peters; brother, Robert Harvey Smith and wife, Joan Smith; nephews, David Barton Smith, and nephew-in-law, Francis Fremont “Chip” Purdy. Those left to cherish her memory include her nieces, Sharon Suzette Purdy, of Arlington, TX, Teresa Anne Peters Broome and husband, Rick, of Elizabethton, TN, Stacie Smith Crim and husband, Bill, Jackson, MS; Joanne Blair and husband, Fred, Sandra Kay Eller, Barbara King, Michael Heaton and wife, Beth, Pat Edwards and husband, Gary, Pam Jameson and husband, Charles, and Jane Bumgarner and husband, Chris, nephew, Brent Smith and wife, Laura of Oxford, MS, David Ellis and wife, Kathy; two great nephews, Sean Purdy and wife, Jill of Cumming, GA, Sterling Purdy and wife, Donna, of Marietta, GA. Several other great nieces and nephews also survive. Christine also leaves behind many adoring friends, including her neighbors on Pine Hill Road, the First Baptist Church family, including the Kitchen Ladies of FBC, and a special little girl, Abigail, who loved Aunt Chris and called her the “Brownie Lady.”
Growing up in Elizabethton, Christine and her siblings, Geraldine, and Bob (Harvey) lost their father when they were very young. Because of this great loss, they developed a lifelong bond, one that never diminished but only grew stronger year after year. They cared and looked after one another well into their 90’s. Christine was the last of the siblings to leave and enter God’s rest.
In 1941, Christine graduated from Elizabethton High School. Shortly after graduation, she began work at North American Rayon Corporation. Never would she have imagined that she would work in the Shipping office for the next 55 years! Christine always enjoyed her work and the friendships she made throughout her career, maintaining those relationships until her death.
In 1942, Christine married the love of her life, a handsome and loving young man from Heaton, NC, Hayes Eller. Not having children of their own, the thing that brought them the most joy was spending time and doting on their nieces and nephews. Throughout the years, they showered them with unconditional love, support, guidance, and many expressions of love and gifts. They also enjoyed square dancing and made lifelong friends with members of their dance club. They traveled throughout Northeast TN and Western NC to a new dance venue each week.
Christine and Hayes loved Daytona Beach and enjoyed many vacations by the shore along with her brother, Bob, and his family. And as was customary, they always took their nieces, Sharon, and Teresa Anne with them so they could be with their cousins, Brent, Bart and Stacie.
Always family oriented, Christine was very close to her mother, Opal, and cared for her until her death in 1992. In addition, she also helped care for her sister, Geraldine, along with her nieces to ensure that their mother was loved and cared for every day.
Christine had a servant’s heart and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. From childhood to her final days, she was an active member. One of her favorite and highest honors was to serve as the Welcome Center Greeter on Sunday mornings. She did this for many years and always welcomed members/visitors with a warm and genuine smile. Everyone who met and knew her loved her!! Christine also served in the kitchen as one of the FBC Kitchen Ladies. For many years up to the present, she worked along her fellow church friends to serve many meals to her church family during our fellowships, celebrations, and weekly dinners.
Christine was a loyal UT and Atlanta Braves fan. She rarely missed watching these teams play on television. In earlier years, Christine enjoyed going to the UT games in Knoxville, a tradition that carried on for many years. She was definitely a passionate VOLS fan, all the way! And then there was shopping! Christine enjoyed shopping tremendously, but she usually bought something for someone other than herself. She was a beautiful, loving, charming and generous giver, especially to her family. “Aunt Chris,” as she was affectionately known, was also famous for her sweet pickles and deviled eggs. Everyone loved her deviled eggs, they were always high in demand, the secret was the pickles she made herself!
Christine Smith Eller had a wonderful life because she lived life with joy! Giving to others of her time, money, and love, her life exemplified the life of a Godly woman. She loved the Lord, her family, and her First Baptist Church family. She was a role model for all of us. Christine has received her award and she is now dancing with Jesus. What a legacy, what a life! “In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln

The two had met in Memphis, Tenn., not long after Bob began working for McKesson Robbins Drug Company. During his forty-five-year tenure, Mr. Smith was a standout salesman. He was only the third person to represent McKesson in the Mississippi Delta since the company established the territory in 1879. Despite his young age, he formed such a strong customer base that he would go on to be named the nation’s number one wholesale salesman twice in his career. His success is a reflection of the profound relationships he cultivated with all. Of course, if you asked Mr. Smith, he gave all the credit to his devoted wife Joan and to “the finest group of customers in the world”. He was beloved not only by his coworkers, but also by the many grateful store owners for whom he would go to the ends of the earth.
After his retirement in 1990, rather than adopting the comfortable life of a retiree, he devoted his energy to First United Methodist Church where he was a member since 1954. He served in many capacities, including as chairman of the administrative board for ten years and as finance chairman for fourteen. He likewise enjoyed helping his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Laura Smith, at their own pharmacy in Oxford, Miss. Chaney’s Pharmacy benefitted from both Bob’s wisdom and ebullient spirit, as did we all.
Mr. Smith was born in 1925 to William and Opal Smith in Elizabethton, Tenn. He joyfully celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday surrounded by his children on May 2. He was a member of the 1938 Elizabethton High School football team, who went on to win the school’s only state championship and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. At the young age of eighteen, he departed East Tennessee after being drafted to aid in America’s fight in the Second World War. As part of the 42nd Infantry Division—known as the “Rainbow Division”—of the 232nd Infantry Regiment, Company K, he rose to the rank of technical sergeant. The Rainbow Division landed in Marseille, France in December of 1944 and served six months as part of a task force under General George Patton. Afterward they marched into Germany, where Sergeant Smith earned the Bronze Star for his action in the Battle of Wurzburg. He continued on with the Rainbow Division to liberate Dachau, the first concentration camp established by the Third Reich.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five years, Joan McGee Smith; his son David Barton Smith; his parents; and his sister Geraldine Smith Peters.
He is survived by his son Robert Brent Smith and his wife Laura of Oxford, Miss.; his daughter Stacie Smith Crim and her husband Bill of Jackson, Miss.; his five grandchildren David Barton Smith II and his wife Leslie of Oxford, Miss., Aynslee Alexander Smith of Oxford, Miss., William Lee Crim III and his wife Kelly of Hattiesburg, Miss., Dr. Rachel Barton Crim of Charlottesville, Va., and Robert Balie Crim of Oxford, Miss.; his great-grandson Barton Brent Smith of Oxford, Miss.; his sister Christine Eller Smith of Elizabethton, Tenn.; his brother-in-law Dale Gassaway McGee and his wife Jan of Memphis, Tenn.; his two nieces Teresa Peters Broome and her husband Rick of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and Sharon Peters Purdy of Arlington, Texas; his nephews Lyle Vinson McGee of Monroe, La.; and Michael Wade McGee of Atlanta, Ga.; and several great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park in Memphis, Tenn.
