Ethel Hill Miller, age 89, formerly of Hampton, went to be with her Lord Saturday, January 1, 2011 in the Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late A.B. and Hillie Whitehead Hill. Mrs. Miller was a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church and attended Rittertown Baptist Church. She was a former employee of the Dave Simerly Store, and enjoyed gardening and keeping her lawn up. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Romulus S. Miller who died on January 5, 1967; four sisters, Katie Hill, Bell Campbell, Bonnie Stanley, and Maxine Honeycutt; and six brothers, Jim Hill, Walter Hill, Floyd Hill, Clyde Hill, Efford Hill, and Glenn Hill. She is survived by a special niece and nephew, Pauline and George Smith, Hampton; three great nieces, Alesia Ramsey, Shona Fritts, and Terri Berry; a great-great niece, Shelbie Morgan, great-great nephew, Seth Ramsey; and a special friend, Emmie Honeycutt. She is also survived by several additional nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Ethel Hill Miller will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 3, 2011 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Richard Stout and Rev. Dean Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Monday prior to the service or at the home of George and Pauline Smith other times. Interment will follow the funeral service in the Whitehead Cemetery in Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Mark Payne, Brian Fritts, Jack Smith, Jerry "Tip" Smith, Mike Smith and Gordon Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Ramsey, Jerry Street, and Seth Ramsey. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center for the loving and devoted care given to Ethel during her illness

FORT WAYNE, IN — Mr. John L. Hill, 91, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Hill was a native of Elizabethton, TN. He was the son of the late David and Ollie Hammit Hill. Mr. Hill served in the US Navy from 1942-1945. He retired as Plant Manager from Travel Trailer Industry after 36 years of service. He enjoyed woodworking and working on computers, planes and his granddaughters.

He was a member of Highland Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Lois Katherine Lowe Hill and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Sue Hill Early and her husband Gary; grandchildren, Ashley Gaugler Chaney and her fiancée Ed, and Kimberly Gaugler and her fiancée John; great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Emerie Chaney; special k9, Bo. The family would like to extend a special thank you to John's caregivers for their love and compassion, and to Southern Care Hospice.

The family of Mr. John L. Hill will receive friends from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home.

Annis Presswood Sherrard, 95, of Port Deposit, Maryland, passed away on May 21, 2022 from natural causes.

Annis had been a resident of the Woodlawn area of Port Deposit, since 1947. She was born in Linville, NC, where she resided until 1944, when she graduated from Newland High School.

Following graduation, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp, which had been enacted in 1943, during the Franklin Roosevelt administration, to help compensate for the nursing shortage on the home front during World War II. As part of the Cadet program, she traveled to Baltimore to work in pediatric affiliation at the University of Maryland.


During her affiliation in Baltimore, Annis was introduced to her late husband, Warwick C. Sherrard. They married in 1947, and, after graduation, the couple took up residence in Cecil County. Prior to the birth of their only child, Annis performed in-home care for various local families. Later, she worked at Harford Memorial Hospital, before taking a position at Perry Point Veterans Hospital, where she spent 17 years. Her husband, Warwick, started AA&W Mobile Home Sales in Perryville in 1965, and Annis left nursing to participate in the building of the business which they operated together until his death in 1999.

Annis loved gardening, raising crops that bore more resemblance to a truck farm than a single family vegetable garden. She loved to can all that she raised, keeping the Ball Jar company in business. She never missed an opportunity to make jelly, spending hours picking strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to knit and crochet.

As you can see, her home hours were full of projects but her favorite pastime by far was travel. She loved traveling, especially cruising. She and Warwick saw the world from Rio de Janeiro to Alaska and most of it in between. It was a good life.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret Hamlin, of Linville Falls, NC; daughter, Ann Jackson, of North East, MD; grandson, Donald W. Jackson, his wife, Carrissa, and children, Colby and Gino, of Perryville, MD; grandson, Victor R. Jackson, his wife, Miyuki, and son, Kai, of Wilmington, DE; grandson, Rhett L. Jackson, his wife, Heather, and children, Annabelle, Gabe, Ethan, and Blaine, of Mechanicsville, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews.


The family would like to thank all of those that were involved with the long term care of their loved one. Special thank you to: Amedysis Hospice Care and all of the wonderful nurses and aids that assisted with her daily care and final passing; Carissa, who was always available for support, advice, and hands-on care; Carla, who pulled night duty support and respite relief; Michele, who was so attentive and skilled at all tasks; Gina, who responded on a minute’s notice; Rising Sun Fire Company Paramedics; Home Health Medical Supplies of Elkton; Sunshine Girls of Moore’s Chapel; Annie, who was always willing to help in any way; Melinda, who lovingly gave her time to support family needs; and the many other friends that offered prayer and support.

Private services will be held at Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, Md. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 27, 2022, 11:30 a.m., at Hopewell Cemetery, Port Deposit, Md.

Jack Coffey, age 87, of Linville Falls, NC passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk, NC.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1931, in Avery County, NC. He graduated from Newland High School in 1949 and received his Masters in Education from Appalachian State University. Jack served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.

Jack received his Doctorate of Education at Highland University in Maryville, Tenn. He taught at Lees-McRae College for 29 years, where he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1976, as well as the title "Professor Emeritus" in 1999. Jack was a trained Emergency Medical Technician and had received numerous awards and acknowledgements for his volunteer service with Avery County.

He was trained as a Lay Pastor with the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church. Jack was a friend to all and loved to serve Jesus and the community he lived in.

He was preceded in death by his Parents: Henry and Essie Townsend Coffey.

Jack leaves behind to cherish his memory his Wife of 62 years: Barbara Dennie Coffey of Linville Falls, NC; God-Son: Cameron Duckworth; God-Son: Casey Duckworth; Sister: Peggy Hamlin of Linville Falls, NC; Sister: Annis Sherwood of Port Deposit, Md.; and Several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral Services for Jack Coffey were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Pisgah United Methodist Church, with Rhonda Campbell and Terry Duckworth officiating. Interment followed in the Pisgah Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Monday beginning at 1 p.m. Pallbearers were Roy Lee Dennie, Cory Hoyes, Casey Duckworth, Tommy Duff, David Yeater, Cameron Duckworth and Logan Guinn. Honorary Pallbearers were Mark Stout, Danny Guinn, Jimmy Guinn and Frank Guinn.

The family would like to thank the staff and therapists at Life Care Center of Banner Elk and thank their church family at Pisgah United Methodist.
