EARL BOWERS SHOOTS SELF THRU HEART - Grief over Dead Wife And Condition of Sick Child Blamed for Act
Despondent over "so much trouble" is said to be the cause of Earl Bowers, 35-year old father of three children of the Blue Springs section, piercing his heart with a .12-guage short gun today, dying approximately five minutes later, member of the sheriff's force said.
According to officers, Sheriff Ernest Brumitt, Rhody Fortner and Charlie DeLoach, who made the investigation, Bowers had gone in to his bed-room[sic] and pulled the trigger, his body falling back on the bed.
A neighbor, working in the garden nearby heard the shot and ran to the house. Officers were called.
Grieving over the death of his wife nearly two years ago, and the condition of his youngest child, was advanced as the basis for the committing the act.
"I got into so much trouble and tryed everything to get out" a note read that was found nearby. Here a few words were intelligible.
The note, written on a part of a dirty envelope, continued "I had only thing in this world I love and want. Someone tell Miss Stover not to send her away if she can't help her, get someone to keep her. I'm going to mee" ... " and here a word could not be made out.
On the back of the envelope were three words: "I want Shirley to have what stuff I have got here."
Further instructions on the envelope provided arrangements for the funeral. He requested that Rev. D. R. Kilgore and Jess Richardson "talk" over him.
Bowers' wife died about one year and a half ago, a few days after she gave birth to her youngest child, who is said has been in a very bad physical condition since birth. The child has been treated at various hospitals and was recently sent home with a report that doctors were unable to do anything for it, officers stated.
A brother of Bowers was stabbed to death in a fracas at a cabin in Taylor Hollow off from Stoney Creek about a year ago. His body was found near the cabin home of Adam Hurley following an all-night party at the Hurly home.
Bowers leaves three small children.
The body was brought to the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home this morning to prepare for burial. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

FUNERAL HELD TODAY FROM STONEY CREEK CHURCH FOR BOWERS
Funeral Service for Earl Bowers, 30, who died yesterday morning from gun shot wounds said to be self-inflicted by investigating officers, were held this afternoon from the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church.
Rev. D. R. Kilgore and Jess Richardson conducted the services following a request made by the deceased in a note found after the shooting.
Bowers left a note setting forth the reasons for his act. Grief over his wife and an afflicted child were believed to be chief reasons.
His wife died about a year and a half ago. Relatives and friends had been taking care of his children since her death.
Surviving are his 17 month-old son and two daughters.

ELIZABETHTON - Edith Bowers Campbell, age 89, a loving mother and grandmother of 1209 Happy Valley Street, Elizabethton, TN formerly of 161 South Street in the Hunter Community passed away Friday, March 27, 2020 at the residence of her daughter.

A native of Carter County she was the daughter of the late John M. and Nettie Jenkins Bowers. Mrs. Campbell worked at the lunch counter in the S. H. Kress store and everyone in Elizabethton knew her and her friendly face. In the Hunter community she was known for her beautiful yard and garden. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Roan Campbell and several brothers and sisters. Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Judy Walton, Sharon Mosier and husband Don and Kathy Perry and husband John, all of Elizabethton; a son, Tony Campbell, Elizabethton; grandchildren, Jim Walton, John Perry, Tina McNair, Michael Shouse and Chelsey Campbell; great-grandchildren, Monica Volsky and husband Austin, Hannah McNair, Savanna McNair, Zach McNair, Kyleigh Campbell, Hadley Shouse and Levi Shouse; a brother, Verl Bowers and wife Mae, Hampton; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hall, Elizabethton and brother-in-law, Bobby Campbell, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service to honor the life of Edith Bowers Campbell will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2020 in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Ray Arnel Bowers, 70, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2018 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late John & Nettie Jenkins Bowers. He was retired from Flour City, Johnson City. He loved to fish.

Survivors include his wife: Vickie Diane Oaks Bowers. Two Children: Rebecca Stargel & husband Raffe, Murfreesboro and Brian Bowers & wife Pam, Elizabethton. Five Grandchildren. One Brother: Verl Bowers, One sister: Edith Campbell.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery with Pastor Terry Dugger officiating. Burial will follow the service. Active Pallbearers will be: Raffe Stargel, John Markland, Billy Bowers, Cyrus Kelley, Michael Bailey and Jim Lyons.

Willard Coy Bowers, 81, of Carter County, Tenn., went home to his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 29, 2019, after a brief illness. Willard was born on May 15, 1938 to the late Coy and Maggie Williams Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Bowers, and a brother, Kermit Bowers.
Willard was employed by Gordons and Thomasville Furniture and retired after 30 years of service. He was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. He was also a member of Southern Harmony and Headed Home Gospel Quartet. He also accompanied the church choir.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilma Stevens Bowers, and son, Aaron Bowers; three brothers, Eldridge, Charles and Carroll; and three sisters, Fredia, Faye and Marge. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and his friends from The Barn, Sonny Fletcher's Store and Burger Hut.
Willard was well known for his musical talent of playing the Dobro, homemade apple butter and honey. Many friendships were made over the years and Willard treasured each and every one of them.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Haley and the Rev. Justin Hodges officiating. Music will be provided by Ronnie Blevins. Interment will follow in the Stevens Cemetery, Rittertown Road, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Chris Bowers, Raymond Carrier, Chris Williams, Tommy Verran, Jamie McKinney and Jimmy Eggers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Collins, Dewey Bowers, Sonny Fletcher, Raymond Williams, Darrell Brinkley, Gale Colbaugh, Randall Lewis and his church family.

CONOVER, N.C. — Harley J. Hardin, 80, of Conover, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at his home. Harley was born October 11, 1938 in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Garnie and Beulah Bowers Hardin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Grady Hardin.
He is survived by a daughter, Karen Hardin of Conover; two sisters, Mary Mueller and husband Richard of Aiken, S.C., and Nora Fritts of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
