    David Church Sr. - MOUNTAIN CITY
    MOUNTAIN CITY — David A. Church Sr., age 82, of 1710 Swift Hollow Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at his residence following a lengthy illness. A native of Johnson County, he was born March 26, 1922, to the late James and Arrie Swift Church. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by two sons, David A. Church Jr. and Dennis M. Church. He was married a number of years to the late Lois S. Church. He was a farmer and had also retired from Burlington Industries. David was a member, for a number of years, of the Johnson County Rescue Squad. He loved to watch wildlife and get together with his family and friends. He was a member of Dewey Church of Christ. David was an Army Veteran, having served in World War II. David is survived by two sons, Bob Church and wife, Helen, of Nashville, Tennessee, and John Church, of Mountain City, Tennessee; five sisters, Marjorie Church, Stella Smiley, Eva June Hedge, Lois Gurney, all of Mountain City, Tennessee, and Della Mae Magnus, of Saskatchewan, Canada; three grandchildren, Michelle Bassett, David Church, both of California, and Chris Church, of Nashville, Tennessee. Several nieces, nephews and a number of friends in the Doe Valley Community also survive. Funeral Services for David will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2004, from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Henson to officiate.

    David married Lois Beatrice Shoun about 1943 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Lois (daughter of Henry Grady Shoun and Trula J. Garland) was born on 22 Apr 1923 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 19 May 1998 in , Watauga County, North Carolina, North Carolina; was buried in Wilson Cemetery, , Johnson County, Tennessee.     MOUNTAIN CITY — Marjorie Church, age 79, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at her residence.

    She was born in Johnson County, Tennessee on December 13, 1930, to the late James Calvin and Arrie Swift Church. In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by two sisters: Anna Pearl Miller and June Hedger; and two brothers: David Church and Claude Church.

    Marjorie volunteered at Children's Bible Ministries for several years. She was a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia, and attended First Baptist Church of Mountain City. She loved her Lord and was a faithful servant to Him.

    Marjorie is survived by sisters: Lois Gurney Long and husband, H Long, Stella Smiley, all of Mountain City, Tennessee, and Della Mae Magnus and husband, Ervin, of Saskatchewan, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

    The funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2010, from the Mountain City Funeral Home with Pastor Ricky Campbell and Dave Johnson (Director of CBM Camp) to officiate. Music will be under the direction of Pastor Ricky Campbell, Mr. Ralph Howard and Mr. Allen Mitchell.

    Private interment will be in Wilson Cemetery.

    A very special thank you to Marjorie's niece, Mary Jane Clay and to Sue Welch and to all of Marjorie's family, friends and neighbors for all of their loving care.

    Stella Rhea Smiley, age 87, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at her home at Governor’s Bend in Erwin, TN.

    She was born in Johnson County, TN on November 23, 1932 to the late James Calvin and Arrie Swift Church. In addition to her parents, Stella was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Smiley; twin sister, Nella Faye; other sisters, Marjorie Church, Anna Pearl Miller, June Hedger; brothers, David Church and Claude Church.

    Stella’s main goal in life was to take as many souls to heaven with her as she could. Along with being a servant to God, she loved to travel. During her many travels, she had the opportunity to visit the Holy Lands twice. Also, in her endeavor to spread the gospel she loved to teach Sunday school, which she did for 26 years, sing in the choir, and play the hand bells. As her memory began to fail her, she had a hard time remembering names so she began to call all women Miss America to make them feel good.

    Stella was an auxiliary member of the American Legion and VFW. She was also a devoted member of First Baptist Church and served as chaplain of the local branch of Gideons International Auxiliary. She always carried extra copies of the Gideon’s New Testament to enable herself to witness to others.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her sisters, Lois Long and Della Mae Magnus; special friends, Buster and Peggy Brown, Sherry Orcutt, Ruth Brown; special niece, Mary Jane Clay, and her beloved dog, Dixie.

    Stella and her two sisters were some of the first campers of CBM Ministries in Tennessee. Stella graduated from Southern Bible College and continued to be instrumental in the continuation of CBM ministries.

    The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at First Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. A graveside service and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020 at Wilson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Terry Jordan, Jerry Jordan, Danny Cullop, Eric Cullop, Joseph Tipton, and Buster Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be the nurses of Caris Hospice, Zanya, Barbara, Jessica, Rachel, and Carol.

    John Henry Church, age 70, of Fletcher, NC passed away, Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Charles George VA Medical Center of Ashville, NC. He was born September 23, 1946 to the late David Allen Church and Lois Shoun Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by grandparents: Grady and Trula Shoun and Jim and Arrie Church and three brothers: Robert, David Jr. and Dennis Church. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a Navy Veteran and served in Vietnam and was discharged in 1970.He also loved fishing.

    He is survived by daughter, Michele and husband George Bassett of Buellton, California, son, John David and wife Sunday Church of Laguna Hills, California; grandchildren: George III and Sam Bassett of Buellton, CA; Special aunt and uncle, Lois and H. Long, of Mountain City, TN; aunts: Stella Smiley of Erwin, TN, Della Mae Magnus of Regina Sask, Canada; Very Special Cousin, Mary Jane Clay, Erwin TN and nephew, Chris Church, of Nashville TN.

    Funeral Service will be conducted Saturday November 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Eastside Memory Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Gale Hartley officiating. Military honors will be accorded by Johnson County Honor Guard. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery. Honaray Pallbearers will be: Paul Arnold, H. Long, Tim Mikulik and the staff of Becky's Rest Home and Charles George VA Medical Center.

    David Allen Church, Jr. "Jerry", age 53, of Pedro Shoun Road, Mountain City, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 17, 2004 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Banner Elk, NC, but lived most of his life in Johnson County. He was born October 21, 1950 to David Allen Church, Sr. of Mountain City and the late Lois Shoun Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother Dennis Chuch. Jerry was a graduate of Johnson County High School and worked as a correctional officer at the North East Correctional Center. Jerry was also a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the U. S. Marines and attended Bethany Baptist Church. He loved collecting pipes, collecting coins and going metal detecting. Surviving are his father, David Allen Church, Sr. of Mountain City; two brothers: Bob Church and wife Helen of Nashville, TN and John Church of Dallas, TX; two nephews: David and Chris and a niece, Michelle. Funeral services for Jerry will be held at 1 p. m. Monday from Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Henson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery following the services. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p. m. Sunday from the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his father, at 1710 Swift Hollow Road, Mountain City. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Hospital.
