    Notes:

    John C. Hicks was born in Mountain City Tenn., January 23, 1852, where he resided until 1914 when he came to Oregon where he lived until the time of his death, May 10, 1921.

    In 1876 he was married to Miss Rachel Alvira Walsh. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom are now living. They are William T. Hicks of Glade Springs, Va., Mrs. Lillie Osborn of Big Creek, Tenn., Mrs. Tiny Danner of Neva, Tenn., Charles Hicks of Dante, Va., Mrs. Bessie Myers of Fossil, and Andrew Hicks of Arlington, Oregon.

    Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Horace Kaye of the Fossil M. E. church, Wednesday, and interment was in the Masonic cemetery.

    John Calvin Hicks died of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever contracted from ticks on his sheep at his camp near Service Creek, OR. He walked nearly 20 miles to Bessie and Arts ranch, near Fossil, where he died.

    Charlie Newton Morefield, age 83, Mountain City, Rt. 3, died in Johnson City Memorial Hospital Wednesday, 8:30 P.M., after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Johnson County, a retired farmer and a member of the Dewey Christian Church. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Martha Hicks Morefield.
    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Relda G. Morefield, Mountain City; four sons Emmett Morefield, Knoxville; Oscar Morefield, Mountain City; Carson Morefield, Mountain City; two daughters, Mrs. Virgie Forrester, Mountain City and Mrs. Ruby Danner, Mountain City and one brother, Carl Morefield, Jenkins, Ky.
    20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren[sic] also survive.
    Funeral services were conducted from the Lewis Gentry Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, at 2:00 P.M, with the Rev. H.T. Mabry and Rev. William Ware officiating. Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery.
    Pall-bearers[sic] were grandsons.
    Flower-bearers[sic] were ladies of the church and neighbors.
    Lewis Gentry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Genetie Pearl Morefield, 55, died at her home in Neva, Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., after a three-months illness. She was a life-time resident of Johnson county and a member of the Neva Free Will Baptist Church.
    She is survived by her husband, Joe Morefield; one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Guinn of Neva; three sons, Robert Morefield of McDowell, West Virginia, Elbert Morefield of Shouns, Tennessee, and Private First Class Oliver Morefield in Germany; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Morefield, Mrs. Tina Slamons, and Mrs. Maggie Gentry, all of Johnson City, and Mrs. Murry Jenkins of Doeville; four brothers, Isaac Morefield of Bristol, Charley Morefield of Doeville, and Jess Morefield and Karl Morefield both of Jenkins, Kentucky.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Neva Free Will Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Earl Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Stout Cemetery.
    Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tetrick Funeral Home.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Genetie Pearl Morefield, 55, who died at her home at Neva, Tuesday, after a three-month illness, were held Thursday at the Neva Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Earl Campbell officiating.

    Mrs. Ora Osborne Brown, 94, a resident of Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

    She was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., and daughter of the late Charles and Lilly Hicks Osborne. She was a charter member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. She was an active member of the March for Christ Organization of Vance Bible Church.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, E. R. Brown and sons, John E. Bowery Jr. and Charles Bowery.

    Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Haynes Watson of Bristol, Tenn., Elinor and Wimpy Gray of Bluff City; daughter-in-law, Peggy Mitchell Bowery of Bristol, Tenn.; special son-in-law, Mack Mottern of Bristol, Tenn.; stepchildren, Edith and Page McClellan of Bluff City, and Mildred and Pat Moore of Atlanta; sister, Rosene Salyer of Kingsport; and brothers, C.J. Osborne Jr., of Bluff City, Wallace Osborne of Piney Flats and I.G. Osborne of Blountville. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m Saturday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Yelton officiating, assisted by Rev. Haynes Watson and Rev. Scott Watson. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

    PINEY FLATS - Wallace James Osborne, 86, of 615 Pickens Bridge Road went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 20, 2001, at Select Specialty Hospital-Bristol Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness.

    He was a son of the late Charles James and Lily Hicks Osborne. Mr. Osborne was a native of Bristol, Tenn. He lived a short time in Johnson County, Tenn., but had lived most of his life in Piney Flats. He was a member of Piney Flats Baptist Church. Mr. Osborne retired after 30 years of service from the Bemberg Plant of the Beaunit Corp. in Elizabethton and was also a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by an 18-month-old son, Paul James Osborn; five brothers and five sisters.

    Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Cleo Perkins Osborne of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Marvin "Buck" Johnson of Piney Flats; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Shirley Osborne of Marietta, Ga.; two grandsons, Marvin Johnson Jr. of Piney Flats and Bobby Osborne II of Johnson City; one brother, C.J. Osborne of Bluff City; one half-brother, I.G. Osborne of Blountville; one half-sister, Rosezeen Salyer of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2001, from Piney Flats Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Davis officiating. Graveside service and interment will be conducted Tuesday, July 24, 2001, from Edgefield Cemetery, Piney Flats at 2 p.m. Thos who wish to attend the graveside are requested to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Dan Torbett, Steve Elsea, Jim Sanders, Larry Crowe, John Swonger, Carl "Buddy" Rash, Hiram Rash, Scott Barnes, Bobby Osborne, Bobby Osborne II, Marvin "Buck" Johnson and Marvin Johnson Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be the nephews of Mr. Osborne and the men of Piney Flats Baptist Church.     BLUFF CITY - One Bluff City man was instantly killed, another was injured and two Carter County men were injured in a delayed dynamite explosion yesterday near Kingsport.

    T.F. Osborne [Thomas Fred Osborne], prominent Bluff city man and father of five children was killed in the blast, Carl Oliver, 20, of Bluff City was injured, as were John B. Lyons, 45, and J.C. Peeks, 22, of near Elizabethton.

    Osborne was foreman of the work crew doing blasting operations on a logging trail in the Kingsport-Church Hill area.

    Lyons, who was treated at a Kingsport hospital and released, told the story of the accident. The extent of injuries to Oliver and Peeks was not determined today.

    Failed to Explode

    Lyons said a charge of dynamite had been set in a hole and the fuse lighted. It failed to explode and after waiting 11 minutes, the four men returned to the site to see what was wrong.

    "We put another charge in to make the first one go off," Lyons said.

    The second charge exploded but the first one still failed to detonate. The men again returned to the site and one began probing in the loose dirt.

    Then the orginal charge exploded.

    Peeks and Oliver were reported in fair condition at Kingsport's Holston Valley Community Hospital.

    MOUNTAIN CITY — Dallas Jasper Morefield, age 84, of 740 Sprucy Lane, Mountain City, TN, passed away Friday, November 5, 2010, at the Veterans Administration, Mountain Home, Tennessee.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie N. and Relda Gentry Morefield. He was a native of Johnson County, where he served in the US Army during World War II and Korea. He was a carpenter and a retired farmer for many years.

    Dallas enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing and playing bingo. He was a member of Dewey Christian Church.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Morefield; and two sisters, Ruby Danner and Virgie Forrester; three brothers, Oscar, Carson and Emmett Morefield; and sister-in-law, Wanda Morefield.

    Survivors include: one daughter; Betty Morefield, two sons; Lester Morefield and Jack Morefield, all of Mountain City, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Virginia Morefield, of Mountain City, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2010, in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Manuel officiating.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. prior to the service.

    Military honors will be at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010, at the Wilson Cemetery.

    TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FATAL TO RESIDENT
    Oliver Morefield, son of Mr. Joe Morefield, Neva, was killed in an automobile wreck, which occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening, March 24, three miles out of Mountain City near Shouns.

    OLIVER MOREFIELD, 25, World War II veteran of Neva, who died as a result of a traffic accident near here on Wednesday night, will be buried at 10 a.m. Saturday at Johnson Church at Neva. Rev. Earl Campbell of Butler and Rev. Joe Ponder of Mountain City will officiate. Burial will be in the Stout Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded him at the grave.
    Survivors include his father, Joe Morefield, Neva; sisters, Mrs. Ethel Guinn, Neva; two brothers, Robert of McDowell, W. Va. and Elbert of Shouns. His mother was the late Pearl Morefield.
    Morefield served in the Pacific theatre during the war. He was discharged in 1945, after which he reenlisted and served 18 months in the army.

    Neva Man Killed In Auto-Truck Collision
    MOUNTAIN CITY, Thurs. March 25 – Oliver Moorefield of Neva, Tenn. was killed here last night involving a truck and a passenger car, and Coolidge Arnold, also of Neva is in serious condition in Mountain Home Hospital at Johnson City.
    A 1941 (Plymouth) sedan, driven by Arnold and carrying three other passengers, was in collision with a coal truck from St. Paul, Va., driven by Henry Lowe, who was uninjured. The accident occurred about 8 p.m. three miles from Mountain City on the North Carolina highway, according to the sheriff of Johnson County.
