    DEATHS
    Jesse H. Garland, Jr., 87, of Shady Valley, died in a Knoxville hospital Tuesday, 8:40 p.m., after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Johnson County, a life-long resident of Shady Valley, and son of the late Jesse H. Garland, Sr., and Mary Elizabethton Garland. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Harmon Chapel Christian Church. His wife, Mrs. Eliza Jane Garland, passed away Aug. 26, 1969.
    Survivors include two sons, Cebert, Springfield, O., and I. C., Shady Valley; two sisters, Mrs. Deward Blevins, Shady Valley, and Mrs. Ray Price, Akron, O.; two brothers, Robert M. and Mitchel G., both of Shady Valley; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were conducted from the Harmon Chapel Christian Church Friday, 2 p.m., with Clay Bailey, minister, officiating. Burial was in the Blevins Cemetery.
    Pall-bearers[sic] were Wiley Elmer Blevins, Bobby Long, R. D. Garland, Redford McQueen, James C. Hutchinson, Tony Long, Barry Blevins, and Acra Cretsinger.
    Flower-bearers were ladies of the church and neighbors.
    Lewis Gentry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Jesse married Eliza Jane Blevins about 1904 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Eliza (daughter of Berryman B. "Barry" Blevins and Aley R. Kazar Hutchison) was born on 11 Jul 1889 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 26 Aug 1969 in Washington County, , , Virginia; was buried in Blevins Cemetery, , Johnson County, Tennessee.     Mabel A. Cretsinger, age 98, of Limestone, TN, formerly of Shady Valley, TN passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014 in Johnson City Medical Center. She was born September 10, 1916 to the late Riley D. Garland and Florence Forrester Garland. She was a member of Laurel Avenue Church of Christ. Mabel liked to read, collect dolls and she especially loved the zoo. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Acra Cretsinger, one sister, one brother, one half-sister and one half-brother.

    Survivors include her caregiver who was like a granddaughter, Melinda Bright and husband David and their children David Bright, Jr. and Belle Bright.

    A graveside service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014 in Blevins Cemetery in Shady Valley with Mr. Virgil Cretsinger officiating. Pallbearers were Travis Blevins, Perry Blevins, Keenan Blevins, Chad Arney, Dean Arney, David Bright and David Bright, Jr. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Mabel married Acra Dell Cretsinger on 10 Mar 1945 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Acra (son of Albert Eli Cretsinger and Biner Bell Blevins) was born on 17 Jun 1917 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 5 Oct 2001 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Blevins Cemetery, , Johnson County, Tennessee.     I. C. Garland, age 95, of Mountain City, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2009, at Mountain City Health Care.

    I. C. was a native of Shady Valley, TN and was born June 6, 1914 to the late Jessie and Eliza Blevins Garland. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army from 1941 through 1946 in Africa and Italy. He was awarded four bronze stars. Prior to joining the Army, he played baseball for the New Your Giants Farm Team in Akron, Ohio. I. C. was a graduate of Steed College and East Tennessee State College. He taught school in Carter County and was Principal of Shady Valley Elementary School for several years. He was listed in the 1968-69 Southern and Southeast Edition of Who's Who. He helped start the first Guidance Association for public schools in Tennessee. He also worked for Raytheon and enjoyed building homes. I. C. served on the Board of Directors for Skyline Telephone Corp. for 40 years. He served on the Johnson County Jury Commission for 17 years and also served on the Planning Commission. He was a member of Harmons Chapel Christian Church.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Sluder Garland, three sisters, Mada Scott, Myrtle Neine Blevins, and Gertie Price; and brother, Cebert Garland.

    Survivors include his son, Eddie Garland and wife Allyson of Loudon, TN; grandson, Jack Garland and wife Meagan of Big Sandy, TN; granddaughters, Jenna Raine and Alyssa Jade Garland of Loudon, TN; two brothers-in-law, Deward Blevins of Shady Valley and Bob Sluder and wife Carolyn of Johnson City; three sisters-in-law, Stella Cox of Japan, Goldie Sparger of Mt. Airy, NC and Shelby Mahan and husband Jim of Butler; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, special friends, Jim and June Hutchinson and very special friend and care giver, Mary Cornett.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 2009, at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Jim Hutchinson, Minister and Howard Taylor, Minister officiating. Music will be provided by the group Narrow Road and Michael Hawkins. Pallbearers will be Michael Hawkins, Bob Sluder, Doug Mahan, Stephen Mahan, Rusty Sluder and Tom Seaton. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Mahan, Richard Blevins, Dr. John Whitlock, Dr. Peter Haibach and formers board member of Skyline Telephone. Burial will follow in Blevins Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by Johnson County Honor Guard.

    The family wishes to express special thanks and appreciation to his special friends and caregivers at the Mountain City Care Center and for his helpful friends and neighbors in Shady Valley.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his niece, Pamela Johnson and husband Bruce, serving as Missionaries in Japan, c/o Mountain City Funeral Home, 224 South Church St., Mountain City, TN 37683.
