    LAWSON BOWERS
    Lawson Bowers, 64 years of age, died at his home on Blue Springs branch this morning at 5:30 following an illness of six months.
    Survivors are six daughters and three sons, one brother and one sister. Three children are dead and his wife.
    Funeral services will be held at the home at ten o'clock Saturday morning and will be in charge of the Rev. D. C. Patrick and the Rev. James Fair.
    Interment will be in the family cemetery.

    Mrs. Susie Bowers Anderson, 99, of 810 North Roan Street, Elizabethton, formerly of the Blue Springs Community, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

    She was the daughter of the late Lawson and Mary Williams Bowers and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alf Anderson; a son, Dallas Anderson and a daughter, Doris Grindstaff. Mrs. Anderson was the oldest member of the Blue Springs Christian Church. She loved to work in her garden and she enjoyed quilting.

    She is survived by a daughter Mary Anderson; a son, Carl Anderson, both of Elizabethton; three grandsons, Albert Grindstaff, MO; Gerald Grindstaff and Larry Grindstaff, both of Elizabethton; three great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Anderson will be conducted on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 7:30 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Mr. Richard Thomason, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jill Kemp.

    The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 -7:30 PM on Thursday, or at the home, 810 North Roan Street, at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mike Honeycutt, Fain Bowers, Ernest Bowers, Terry Oliver, Sherrell Bowers and Gayle Oliver. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 AM Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late A.B. and Bertha Morrell Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lela May and Brown Grindstaff, and a brother, Earl Bowers.

    Mr. Bowers attended First United Methodist Church. He was a retired flight instructor with Appalachian Flying Service at the Tri-Cities Regional Airport with over 20,000 flight hours and was also an FAA Examiner. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew in both the European and Asian theatres.

    Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Ritchie Bowers, of the home, a daughter and son-in-law, Carla Bowers Cox and Bob Cox, a granddaughter and spouse, Tiffany and Scott Gardner, and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Johnathon Gardner, all of Knoxville.

    The funeral service for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 31, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Scott Reynolds. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, at Pearl Bowers Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Tennessee National Guard. Active Military pallbearers will also be provided by the
    Tennessee National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Joseph May, Dr. Floyd Earl May, Dr. Stephen May, Dr. David May, Sam Ritchie, Randy Musick, Kenneth Mann, Kenneth Norton, Lewis Bowers, Ray Townsend, Kenneth Williams, Gary Williams, Earl Grindstaff, Bill McGhee and Jerry Hayes.     Born June 22, 1931 to John B. and Amanda Wilson Pierce. Johnie was a homemaker and also a retired housekeeper at the Carter County Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, N. D. Estep and one son David Estep.

    Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Estep and four sons, Hobert (Wess Lee), Roger, Larry "Cap" (Linda) and Douglas Estep and fur baby, Sally. Also, left to cherish her memory are four grandchildren, Tammy Lancaster (Nathan), Crystal Bilbery (Daniel), Brian Estep (Audra), and Daverelle Estep and several great-grandchildren. Johnie is also survived by her half-sisters, Wanda Johnson, Naomi Pierce and Margie Pierce and half-brothers J. B. Pierce and Edgar Pierce and several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Edgar Pierce officiating. Ms. Pierce loved working in flowers and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church.

    She is survived by two sisters, Cynthia Ensor and her husband, Henry Wayne, Elizabethton; Gretchen Miller and her husband, Larry, Gray; two brothers, Lawrence Pierce and his wife, Gaye, Elizabethton; Aaron Pierce and his wife, Lynda, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Anna Ruth Pierce, Elizabethton; special friends, Cleola Taylor, Ernest Lee Wilson, Dorothy Burrow, and Herbert and Kathy Street, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Ms. Pierce will be conducted on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace with Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sue Bowers, pianist and Dale Williams, soloist. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 to 7:00 PM Friday prior to the service and at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Lynda Pierce, 202 Sunrise Drive, at other times.

    The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Duncan officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Rusty Verran and the other deacons who visited her, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class of Hunter First Baptist Church, and the Hunter First Baptist Church Choir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Pierce, Joe Pierce, Earl Pierce, and Jack Pierce; and three sisters, Vera, Ivory and Gretchen.

    Lawrence retired from Watauga Industries and from Watauga Forestry Services. He was a United States Army veteran and was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Rada Gaye Bowers Pierce, of the home; his sons, Keith Pierce and Zaney Pierce, both of Elizabethton; his daughters, Debbie Wiseman and husband Mike, of Morganton, NC and Sandra Vanover, of Elizabethton; a grandson, Lucas Pierce, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Jada Vanover, of Elizabethton; a sister, Cynthia Ensor, of Elizabethton; and a brother, Aaron Pierce, of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mr. Lawrence Pierce will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday March 2, 2016 at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Roe, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir. The family will receive friends at the church between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, prior to the service on Wednesday; or at the residence at any time.

    The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 3, 2016 in the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Gail Oliver, Mac Collins, Dan Powers, Tracy Herman, Greg Tester, Pookie Ensor, and Henry Ensor.

    ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Aaron Howard Pierce, age 77, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord and loved ones passed before him Friday, September 6, 2019 in the Holston Valley Medical Center.

    A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Joe H. and Creola Oliver Pierce. He was a 1960 graduate of Unaka High School where he was a standout football player. Aaron retired from Great Lakes Research Corporation. He also was employed by the State Highway Department and as custodian at Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton for nearly five years. He attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. Aaron was active in Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer fireman for the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed sports, especially football, fishing and spending time with his family especially around the holiday season.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by ten siblings. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Lynda Sue Tolley Pierce, of the home; his children, Tim and Penny Pierce, Mark and Sherry Pierce, Tammy and John Nanney, Debbie LeVeau and Doug Wilson all of Elizabethton; Todd and Lin Stevens, Gray and April and Richie Hooven, Kingsport; a sister, Cynthia Ensor and husband Henry, Elizabethton; sisters-in-law, Anna Ruth Pierce and Gaye Pierce; fourteen grandchildren and their spouses and ten great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mr. Aaron Howard Pierce will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, September 9, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Dennis Wilson and Rev. Richard Smitley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Monday prior to the service or at the residence at other times. Mrs. Arnold was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Hobert and Bell Loudy Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Arnold, March 20, 1998.

    Mrs. Arnold was a member of Blue Springs Christian Church and was a homemaker.

    Fred Carl Bowers, age 84, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, Fred was the only son of the late Roby DeWitt Bowers and Myrtle Campbell Bowers. Fred lived in Elizabethton his entire life. As a boy, he was active in MYF and was a member of Boy Scout Troop #30, achieving the Silver Award in the 1940s. A 1955 graduate of Elizabethton High School, Fred was the photographer for the high school yearbook and was voted “Most Artistic.” His passion for photography blossomed, and he went to work for the Elizabethton Star during his junior year. Following his graduation, he accepted a position with Coleman’s Studio, where he worked for 44 years until his retirement in 1999. Over the years, he photographed thousands of school children, hundreds of brides, sporting events of every kind, and countless studio portraits for families and individuals. Fred’s gift of seeing the best in everyone is evidenced in his work. He paid forward what his mentors taught him as he trained numerous young photographers along the way. His photography was recognized by his peers with many awards over the course of his career. Fred played trombone in the Elizabethton High School band, where he met a young clarinet player named Mary Ruth Hathaway. On their second date, he introduced her to his mother as his wife. The rest, as they say, is history.
    Fred was a charter member of the Elizabethton chapter of the Order of DeMolay. He was a fifty-year member of Dashiell Lodge #238, Free and Accepted Masons; Past Worthy Patron of Sycamore Chapter #163, Order of the Eastern Star; former member of the Advisory Board of the Order of Rainbow for Girls, Elizabethton #71, and a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color. He was a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) for many years. Fred was a faithful member of Elizabethton First United Methodist Church; he and Ruth had returned to the first church they attended as newlyweds. He was delighted to be a “Pop” to his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. A talented cartoonist, he created personalized, hand-drawn “Pop cards” for his family and close friends for all occasions of note.
    In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by one son in law, Noel Muhn, who passed away on December 19, 2021.
    He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Hathaway Bowers. Three daughters: Deborah & Larry Gouge; Betsy Bowers; and Roberta Muhn. Gouge; and Brittney Muhn Tapp & fiancé Alex Lancaster, IV. Three great granddaughters: Kylee Muhn, Bella Tapp, and Keri Muhn.
    A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at First UMC of Elizabethton on Thursday, February 24, at 6:00 PM with Reverend Raymond Amos Sr officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM till 5:45 PM. Music will be under the direction of Gabriel Short, Susan Heaton, Pianist and David Arney, Organist. The service will be live-streamed on the First United Methodist Church Facebook website, www.fumcelizabethton.com .     Donald F. Bowers, age 74, passed away December 21, 2021 at Holston Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mr. Bowers was the son of the late Ethel Bowers of Elizabethton TN. Mr. Bowers is survived by his wife Rena Bowers, two step-children Keith Rice and wife Tina, and Tina Balthis and husband Buck. Four grandchildren Aleigha, Amy,Mark and Trey. Seven great-grandchildren Hunter, Faith Ann, Colton, Lucus, Kaeson, Everleigh and Victoria. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday December 10,2022 at Bethany Baptist Church 162 Bethany Church Rd. Jonesborough, TN.37659. Visitation is from 2:00pm-3:00pm and the service will be from 3:00pm-4:00pm. Rev. Ed McClain will be officiating and the music by Kelly Anderson.
