JOHN A. BOWERS
John A. Bowers, age 66, constable of Carter County and life-long resident, passed away suddenly last night, apparently suffering a heart attack, at the South Side Christian Church where he was attending services.
He lived with his wife on route 1, whom he married 39 years ago. Mr. Bowers had been in ill health for the past year and has had several light heart attacks. He was a member of the Carter Christian Church.
Surviving him besides his wife Bessie, are two daughters, Mrs. T. F. Wagner of Norton, Va., and Mrs. Dewey Bradshaw of 520 Siam Road; two sons, Harmon and T. C. Bowers of the city; three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Bradley of Bastrop, Texas, Mrs. Caroline Nidiffer of route 2, Mrs. Kate McQueen of 207 Academy; and one brother, Bob Bowers of Bristol.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the South Side Christian Church at two o'clock with the Rev. Grant H. Laws, pastor of the church, in charge, assisted by the Rev. Johnny Hall. Burial will be made in the DeLoach Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Lofton Keller, George Angel, John Turner, Tine Morgan, Ray Heaton, and William Bowman.
The body will be removed from the Tetrick Funeral Home to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Dewey Bradshaw of 520 Siam Road at four o'clock this evening.

Helen T. Thomas, age 90, Ivy Hall Nursing Home, formerly of Sunrise Drive, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, April 10, 2006. She was a native of Carter County and was the daughter of the late John H. and Ina Nidiffer Treadway. She was a homemaker and of Free Will Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gurney Thomas; a daughter, Phyllis Thomas Taylor; son, Tony Taylor; grandson, Chris Taylor; four brothers, Harold Treadway, Guy Treadway, R.L. Treadway and Allen Treadway; three sisters, Lillian Perry, Alta Treadway and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Deloach. Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Steward and Kathleen Thomas, Gary and Kay Thomas, Edward and Edna Thomas, James "Jim" Thomas, all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Kenneth Thomas, Karen Thomas Timbs, Wendy Thomas Good, Michael Thomas, Rebecca Tester, Chris Roberson; ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Shipley, Louise Arnold, both of Johnson City, Faye M. Norris, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton with Rev. D.C. Byrd and Rev. Burl Garland officiating. Music will be under the direction of Karen Timbs. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service hour or friends may also call at the residence of a son, Gary Thomas, 116 Rich Hollow Road, Elizabethton, anytime. The graveside service and interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Treadway Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Judy and Victor Deloach, Charles "Dude" LaPorte, Jack Perkins, Hazel Bergman, Kenneth Carden, Staff and Employees of Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Virginia Treadway Shipley, 86, of Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord on March 19, 2007, surrounded by her family.

She was a native of Carter County and was the daughter of the late John H. and Ina Nidiffer Treadway. She was a homemaker, a Christian and of the Baptist faith.

Ms. Shipley was most proud of her family and enjoyed spending time with them and all of her grandchildren. She also volunteered at the Senior Citizen's Center in Johnson City.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Delmar McConnell; four brothers: Harold Treadway, Guy Treadway, R.L. Treadway and Allen Treadway; five sisters: Lillian Perry, Alta Treadway, Elizabeth Lizzie Deloach, Faye Norris and Helen Thomas.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the 2500 wing of the Johnson City Medical Center.

Survivors include three sons and two daughter-in-laws: Elmer and Betty Shipley, Danny and Danita Shipley, Lewis Shipley, all of Johnson City; one daughter and son-in-law: Glenda and Freddie Goldsberry, of Watauga; seven grandchildren: Travis Maness, Jennifer Shipley, Rebecca Shipley, Natasha Shipley, Chris Shipley, Jessica Shipley, Alicia Shipley; two great-grandchildren: Shelby Maness and Chelsea Maness; sister: Louise Arnold, of Johnson City; and also several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday at 2:00 PM in the Sunrise chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Reece Harris officiating. The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow in Washington County Memory Gardens.

Monday evening, December 26, 2022, Norma “Jean” Gouge Elliott, 83, Elizabethton, was escorted by the Angels into the presence of Jesus from Signature Health Center. She was also reunited with her moma and sister whom she had so longed to see once again.
Jean was the daughter of the late Harold and Mattie Nidiffer Gouge. She was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Hodge, and her three brothers, Duard, Kyle and Wayne Gouge.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Elizabethton, but had most recently attended Southside Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton, until the decline in her health. She loved to have her Bible read to her daily.
The Lord granted her son, Bobby, the desire of his heart by letting him be with his mom, holding her hand and singing her favorite song to her, “What A Day That Will Be.” Just as he finished singing she took a deep breath and was gone to glory.
She is survived by four children, Bobby Miller, of the home, and her caregiver, David (Nancy) Miller, Knoxville, Greg (Carol) White of Wyoming and Kristi (Scott) Noe, Jonesborough; and five grandchildren, Emily (Franky) Covarrubias of Colorado, Lauren and Caroline Miller, Knoxville, Tyler Noe, Jonesborough, and Jacob (Sabrina) Noe, Knoxville. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Arya and Carter Covarrubias and Wyatt Noe. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
It was her wish to be cremated and that no service be held.
Bobby would like to give a big shout out of thanks to Debbie Street, Administrator of Signature Health Care, her staff and also the entire nursing staff who so generously showered mom with love and compassion, and I cannot forget housekeeping and the laundry department for their care and concern. Special thanks goes out to Dr. Keith Cook and his nurse Alishia for many years of healthcare and love given to mom.

Mr. Robert H. "Bob" Bow-ers, 68, of Eliz-a-beth-ton, passed away on Fri-day, June 19, 2015, in the John-son City Med-i-cal Center Hos-pi-tal.
He was the son of the late Wil-liam Har-mon and Mary El-li-ott Bow-ers and was born in Ban-ner Elk, NC. In ad-di-tion to his par-ents, he was pre-ceded in death by a son, Robert Har-mon Bow-ers Jr.; two sis-ters, Carol Ruth Bow-ers and Nancy Reece; and a brother, Johnny Paul Bow-ers.
Mr. Bow-ers was a grad-u-ate of the Eliz-a-beth-ton High School class of 1965. He was in-ter-ested in col-lect-ing an-tiques and he liked to fish. He was a mem-ber of Bible Bap-tist Church.
He is sur-vived by six sis-ters, Sandy Bow-ers, Eliz-a-beth-ton, Faye Dean, Hick-ory, NC, Elsie Hum-phrey, Eliz-a-beth-ton, Mary Rowe, Hick-ory, NC, Joyce Clark, Eliz-a-beth-ton, Cath-ryn Mitch-ell, Eliz-a-beth-ton; a brother, Billy Bow-ers, Hamp-ton; two aunts, Goldie McKin-ney and Gla-dys Pot-ter, both of Roan Moun-tain. Sev-eral nieces, neph-ews and cous-ins also sur-vive.
A grave-side ser-vice for Mr. Bow-ers will be con-ducted on Mon-day, June 22, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Dy-son Grove Ceme-tery in John-son County with Pas-tor Frank Os-borne of-fi-ci-at-ing. Those wish-ing to at-tend are asked to meet the fam-ily at the cem-e-tery at 1:50 PM on Mon-day.
