    OBITUARY AND FUNERAL NOTICE: VANA McGUIRE TRIVETT Vana McGuire Trivett, age 101, Dark Ridge Road, Elk Park, NC, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, November 9, 2003 at Appalachian Christian Village following a brief illness. A native of Beech Mountain, NC, she was the daughter of the late George W. McGuire, Jr. and Alice Trivett McGuire. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker. She taught quilting, sewing, macrame and cake decorating classes at Mayland Community College. Mrs. Trivett enjoyed music such as folk ballads and hymns. Some of her recordings are on file at Duke University. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Trivett, two sons, Clarence Trivett, Perry Allen Trivett, a daughter, Wilma T. Walsh, a grandson, Gary Triplett, several brothers and sisters. Survivors include four daughters, Lenos Trivett, Johnson City, TN, Georgia E. Marston, Peoria, IL, Jewel T. Nunley, Elizabethton, TN, Judy T. Lynn, Newton, NC, two sons, Vernon Trivett, Pensacola, FL, Clark Trivett, Seven Lakes, NC, 26 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, three sisters, Fern Buchanan, Erwin, TN, Erleen Church, Beech Mountain, NC, Blanche Harmon, Valdese, NC, several nieces and nephews also survive. A celebration of Life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Beech Mountain Baptist Church, Beech Mountain, NC, with Rev. James Hagaman, Rev. Richard Jones, and Rev. Dennis Church officiating. Music will be under the direction of Beech Mountain Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.     ERWIN — Mrs. Hazel "Fern" McGuire Buchanan, born October 12, 1905, went home to be with her Savior Wednesday morning, January 9, 2008.

    Fern was born and raised in the Beech Mountain Community of Watauga County, North Carolina. The daughter of George W. McGuire and Alice Trivette McGuire; and the granddaughter of George W. McGuire Sr. and Salley Greer.

    Fern married the late Stokes Buchanan in December of 1924 and later moved from Plum Tree, North Carolina, to Elizabethton in 1926. Fern and Stokes moved to Hampton in 1937, later buying the Quality Market in Hampton that Fern operated until they sold the store in 1960. Fern, a devoted wife, traveled with her husband Stokes in his profession as a Construction Electrician, living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, New York City and Frederick, Maryland.

    Fern was a Christian woman and active as a leader in her church, Calvary Baptist Church of Elizabethton, Hampton Baptist and First Baptist Church of Erwin, serving as Sunday School teacher, President of the W.M.U. and Sunday School Superintendent.

    Fern was also a past member of the Hampton Garden Club and a past officer and past president of the Erwin Women's Club, and an active member in P.T.A. when her children were in school. She was one of the founding members of the Unicoi County Heritage Museum.

    Miss Fern as her friends called her was a avid quilter. Her quilts have been shown nationwide. Fern was honored for her work in quilting by piecing and quilting the Unicoi Square in the Tennessee Bi-Centennial quilt that is on display in Nashville. Her sewing skills resulted in her working at J.C. Penney in Elizabethton in the mid 1920s, later at Gimbels in New York City, and at Dosser's in Johnson City.

    Fern in her 102 years touched the lives of many people with her Christian faith and outgoing personality.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Stokes Buchanan; along with an infant daughter, Alice Maxine Buchanan; brothers, Frank, Charlie, Roy, Jennings and Hurst McGuire; seven sisters Myra Trivette, Sarah Jones, Ida Ramsey, Frances McGuire, Vana Trivette, Erilene Church and Oda Jones.

    Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Madge Buchanan, Erwin; one daughter, Phyllis Pinkerton, Kingsport; one sister, Blanch Harmon, Valdese, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Sam Pinkerton and wife, Chris Tipton, Erwin, Suzanne Cloninger and Daniel Malone, Kingsport, Sandra Thurmond and husband, Dave, Durham, North Carolina, Becky Buchanan and husband, John Simpkins, Washington D.C., Crystal and Matt Atkinson, Manassas, Virginia; three great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

    Funeral service for Mrs. Buchanan will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday from the First Baptist Church, 200 Love Street, Erwin. Reverend Tony Rutherford will officiate. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler. Committal service will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Deacons of First Baptist Church will serve as active pallbearers. Nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

    A native of Avery County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late George Washington McGuire, Jr. and Alice Trivette McGuire.

    Mrs. Church was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Bemberg Corporation and a homemaker. She enjoyed researching genealogy, gardening and flowers.

    Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and spouses, four great-grandchildren; two sisters. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Church, on April 12, 1990; five brothers; three sisters; two half-brothers and two half-sisters.
    Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2007 at Beech Mountain Baptist Church, Elk Park, N.C. with the Rev. Dennis Church and the Rev. James Hagaman officiating. Interment will follow in the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.

    Memorials donations may be made to Beech Mountain Baptist Church, c/o of Wilma Storey, 186 Buckeye Road, Elk Park, N.C. 28622. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Charles Sykes for all the love and care shown to Mrs. Church through the many years.

    Blanche McGuire Harmon, 92, of Valdese, went to her heavenly home after a brief illness at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

    She was originally from Beech Mountain Community in Elk Park, Avery County, NC. She was born on March 13, 1917, the daughter, and the last child of George Washington McGuire, Jr. and Safrona Alice Trivette. She was a retired upholstery sewer for Hancock and Moore Furniture Company of Hickory. Blanche was a talented quilter, she loved her family heritage, loved a great story, and she loved her children and family. She was a member of Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Elk Park, N.C. She was preceded in death by a son, Steve Harmon, a casualty of the Vietnam War, and two grandsons, Tony Preston Church and Matthew Paul Duncan.

    Survivors include her children, Lois Church and husband Chester of Connelly Springs, Wayne Harmon and wife Dolly of Butler, TN, Sam Harmon and wife Glenda of Elk Park, N.C., Larry Joe Harmon and wife Bernice of Morganton, David Harmon and wife Carolyn of Clermont, FL, Sally Harmon of Burnsville, NC, Freddie Harmon and Annette Chapman of Drexel, and Frieda Duncan of Valdese and husband David J. Duncan, pastor of Glen Apline United Methodist Church; she is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday September 2, 2009 at Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, where the body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. Richard Jones, Rev. Dennis Church, and Rev. David Duncan. Interment will follow at Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

    Mrs. Trivett was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a daughter of the late
    John Bunyan Trivett Sr. and Vana McGuire Trivett. She was also preceded in
    death by her husband, Ulysses G. Trivett Sr., and by two brothers, a sister
    and a stepson.

    Mrs. Trivett graduated from Cranberry High School in North Carolina and moved
    to Johnson City to work and live. After a short time at American Optical
    Company, she worked for the Kingsport Press. During this time she married
    Ulysses G. Trivett Sr.

    Mrs. Trivett attended business college in Johnson City and earned a
    certificate in stenography. She attended night classes at East Tennessee State
    University, studying real estate, and then helped her husband incorporate
    Trivett's Inc., and they along with U.G. Trivett Jr., built apartments
    throughout the southeast. By this time she and her husband had other real
    estate holdings, which she helped manage. Mrs. Trivett attended management
    seminars at Appalachian State University and Georgia State University. She
    earned her registered apartments manager certification and continued to manage
    until the mid 1980s.

    Mrs. Trivett was listed in Personalities of the South in the '70s on two
    different occasions. She was past president of the Altrusa International of
    Johnson City, the American Legion Auxiliary, National Conference of Women in
    Chambers of Commerce, a member of the American Business Women's Association,
    past officer in the Washington County Republican Women and the Tri-Cities
    Apartment Association. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

    Survivors include a son, Melvin Trivett, Nashville; a daughter, Sherri Trivett
    Kay, Johnson City; two brothers, Vernon Trivett, Pensacola, Fla., and Clark
    Trivett, West End, N.C.; and three sisters, Georgia Marston, Peoria, Ill.,
    Jewel Nunley, Elizabethton, and Judy Lynn, Newton, N.C.; and a grandson,
    Michael Blake Trivett, Johnson City. A step-granddaughter, a step-grandson and
    several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, from the East
    Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Hensley, Rev. Willard
    Warfield and Rev. James Dampier officiating. Graveside services will follow at
    Monte Vista Burial Park.

    Jewel Trivett Nunley was called to heaven May 7, 2022. Jewel was born to Vana McGuire Trivett and John Trivett in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
    She married her school sweetheart, William R. Nunley (Bill) in 1955. She began her career while raising her family by selling encyclopedias and taking interior design courses. Her interest in interior design sparked her entrepreneurial spirit and she, along with her husband Bill, parlayed their combined talents into a successful furniture and appliance business that served the community for many years.
    Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bill, and son, Anthony (Tony). She was also predeceased by her brothers Pat, Clarence and Vernon and sisters, Wilma, Lenos and Georgia.
    Those left to cherish her memory and light of her immense love include three daughters, Diana, Delilah and Deborah and sons-in-law Wayne Bartley and Ed Gorman; four grandchildren, Brooks, Stuart and wife Emily, Nicholas and Myranda. Beloved siblings Judy Lynn (Johnny) and Clark Trivett (Judy), sisters-in-law Mary Jane Hart, Nola Gay Trivett, and Elizabeth Nunley and brother-in-law Jerry Baird survive. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    He was born on January 19, 1941 in Banner Elk, North Carolina, a son of the late Hurst McGuire and the late Addie McGuire.

    He was preceded in death by his Parents; Two Brothers, Gene Mcguire, Jerry Mcguire; Daughter- In-Law, Sharon Gayle; Grandson, Gregory Gayle, Jr.

    Wendell was born and raised in Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church in Beech Mountain, NC but of late he was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN. He was a member of the Southern Country band for 5 years. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry work, playing the guitar, spending time with his grandchildren and his family. He enjoyed listening to Country and Gospel music.

    Services for Glen Wendell McGuire will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 11:00 am at Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Jones and Pastor Dennis Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm on Monday July 15, 2019 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service in Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

    Jerry worked as an Substance Abuse Counselor with New River Mental Health and also at the University Hospital in Augusta, GA.

    He enjoyed computers, geneology and watching westerns on TV.

    Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his: brother, Gene Allen McGuire; son-in-law, Christopher Thomas Burke.

    Jerry has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Marilyn O. McGuire of the home; daughter, Tonya Burke of Vidalia, GA.; sons, Clinton McGuire and wife Kathy of Conyers, GA., Stephen McGuire and wife Stacie of Appling, GA., Phillip McGuire and wife Kim of Augusta, GA.; brothers, Reed McGuire and wife Marjorie of Aiken, SC., Wendell McGuire and wife Meta of Elk Park, NC.; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.

    Winston Church, 80, of Elk Park, N.C., passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at The Waters of Roan Highlands.

    He was born on September 9, 1940 in Avery County to the late Truman and Erleen McGuire Church.

    Winston was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and traveling in his spare time and loved working as a taxidermist as well as immensely enjoying being outdoors. He loved animals and all of nature. Winston worked on Grandfather Mountain over a span of 40 years. His duties included gift shop manager as well as assisting Mr. Hugh Morton, owner of Grandfather Mountain, with various duties which included helping with getting pictures of Mildred the Bear and other animals in the habitat. Winston also enjoyed spending time with his family.

    Those he left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Carolyn Church of the home; son, Bradley Church of Deep Gap; step-daughters, Donna (Jerry) Bare of West Jefferson and Pam Davis of Fleetwood; grandsons, Nathan (Becca) Cheek of Fleetwood and Josh Bare of West Jefferson; great granddaughters, Kendra and Kylie Cheek of Fleetwood; brothers, Hansel (Doris) Church of Canton, GA and Curtis Church of Elk Park; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Funeral services for Winston will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Beech Mountain Baptist Church.

    Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland, NC.

    Michael Daniel Jones, age 63, of the Heaton Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at Life Care of Banner Elk.

    He was a son of the late Dayton Newland and Oda McGuire Jones. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Geneva Jones Henson, Della Jones Ingram, Willa Jones Bunting, Sherrill Jones and Evelyn McCoury Dunn. Michael, or Mike, as he liked to be called, trusted in the Lord and adored his church family at Heaton Christian Church. He amazed everyone with his photographic memory, knowledge of history and knack for predicting the weather. Mike will be remembered as a loving and caring person with a good personality and positive attitude. He never had a complaint! Mike loved helping his family and never failed to express to others how much he appreciated them.

    Mike is survived by siblings: Mary Alice Parlier of Elk Park, Rachel Jones of the home and Richard Jones and his wife, Alma, of Newland; special niece: Tina Ingram of Elk Park and a sister-in-law: Angela Jones of Roan Mountain, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as his many friends and church family.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, in Heaton Christian Church. Pastor Paul Cole will officiate. Burial will follow in the Beech Mountain Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church.

Mrs. Church was born July 17, 1935, in Avery County, a daughter of the late Floyd and Blanche McGuire Harmon. She was of the Baptist faith and formally employed as a knitter with Alba-Waldensian and Burke Yarns.

    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her Husband: Chester Church; a Son: Tony Preston Church; and a Brother: Steve Harmon. Surviving are her son: Terry Church and wife, Wanda, and their children, Tangena and Preston; her Daughter: Nancy Burns and husband, Mike, and their children, Myles, Amanda, and Kimberly; her Daughter: Jennifer Hubbard and husband, Tim, and their children, Heather and Sarah; her Daughter: Tammy Eckard and husband, Rick, and their children, Robert, Kira and Alexis; and her Son: Daniel Church and his children, Ashton and Cameron. Also surviving are her Siblings: Wayne Harmon, Samuel Harmon, Larry Joe Harmon, David Harmon, Sally Harmon, Freddie Harmon, and Freida Duncan; and 12 great-grandchildren.

    A service of celebration was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Elk Park, with the Rev. Richard Jones and the Rev. David Duncan officiating. Interment followed in the Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

    Private First Class Floyd Steven Harmon was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC Harmon served our country until February 24th, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was married. Floyd died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. Floyd was born on January 1st, 1944 in Banner Elk, North Carolina. PFC Harmon is on panel 05E, line 072 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

    Avery Journal, Newland, NC - March 3, 1966: FLOYD STEPHEN HARMON KILLED IN VIETNAM: Pfc Floyd Stephen Harmon, 22, formerly of Beech Mountain and whose family now lives in Valdese, died in Viet Nam Feb. 24, of wounds caused by small arms fire, the Department of Defense reported. Pfc Harmon, son of Mrs. Blanche McGuire Harmon of Valdese and Floyd Harmon of Detroit, has been in the service since August 1965, and has been with the 101st Airborne Division. He was sent to Viet Nam last December. He attended Cranberry High school and was employed by Drexel Furniture Company before enlisting last June. He was married in August to Miss Lois Walsh who lives in Valdese. Surviving in addition to the widow and parents are five brothers, Wayne and Sammie of Winston Salem, Larry of Morganton and David and Freddy Harmon of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Lois Church on Connely Springs, Miss Sallie Harmon of Valdese and Miss Freida Harmon of the home; and a half-sister, Miss Glenda Harmon of Detroit. Funeral services will be held pending arrival of the body at the Beech Mountain Baptist Church. Rev. W. A. Honeycutt and Reverend Hagaman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

    I only knew him through letters. I was a kid who wrote to a soldier and learned about a war far away. I hope someone still thinks about him. I have remembered, and always will. Rena Van Breukelen.

    He was the Husband of Mrs Lois Walsh Harmon, 304M Church Street, Valdese, NC, formerly of Butler Tenn. Floyd is the son of Floyd & Blanche McGuire Harmon. He was one of nine children.

    He served with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagles", USARV.

    He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.

    JOHNSON CITY - Melvin Blake Trivett, 65, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center.

    Mr. Trivett was born on September 17, 1952, to the late Ulysses G. and Mary Lenos Trivett in Johnson City, TN, where he lived all his life. Mr. Trivett was a 1971 graduate of Science Hill High School. Some people will best remember him riding his motorcycle all over town and in the mountains. He enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, dancing, and playing pool. His favorite board game was "Risk". In his younger years, he was famous for predicting upcoming music legends, such as the Bee Gees and the Eagles. He was so talented and intelligent, he built a working radio station that broadcasted in our area, from his backyard in his sister's dollhouse that their dad had built.

    Mr. Trivett leaves behind a son, Michael Trivett and his wife Amanda; a sister, Sherri Kay and her husband Alvin Elrod; as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

    The family would like to extend a special thanks to Richard Sproles and his friend Melinda for their special friendship to Mr. Trivett.

    Visitation will be held for Mr. Trivett at Bread of Life Fellowship located at 2308 Watauga Road in Johnson City, TN 37601 on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM and a Memorial service will follow beginning at 6:30 PM. Pastor Todd Ellis is officiating.
