    JOHNSON CITY -- James Howard VanHoy, 86, 407 E. 4th Avenue, died Monday, February 21, 2005, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
    Mr. VanHoy was a native of Embreeville and had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was a son of the late Ray E. VanHoy and Addie Casey VanHoy and was also preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Dempsey VanHoy, and a brother, Ray VanHoy.
    Mr. VanHoy was a retired maintenance department employee of East Tennessee State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 38th Infantry Division, 149th Infantry Regiment, Company K, in the Pacific Theater. He earned three Bronze Service Stars, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Watauga Christian Church.
    Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kathy VanHoy and Ronald and Mary VanHoy, all of Watauga; three sisters, Alma Vanover, Stella King and Helen McKinney, all of Johnson City; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his special and dear friend, Betty Curde. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, from the North Chapel of Morris-Baker Funeral Home with Pastor Donnie Humphrey and Mr. Tony Duncan Jr. officiating. Music will be provided by The Harvey Family. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Scott VanHoy, Travis VanHoy, Derek VanHoy, Jeff Bowman, Jackie Dempsey and Paul Persinger. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Joe Andrews, Hobe Stanley and Tony Duncan Jr.

    Alma L. VanOver, of Johnson City, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness.

    She was a native of Washington County and had lived most of her life in Johnson City.

    Her husband, Edward F. VanOver preceded her in death on March 15, 1973.

    She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Addie VanHoy, two brothers, Howard VanHoy of Watauga, TN, and Ray E. VanHoy of Johnson City.

    She was an active member of Austin Springs United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church Women's Organization.

    Survivors include two sisters, Helen McKinney, Johnson City, Stella King, Johnson City; a special brother-in-law, Herman King, Johnson City; special sister-in-law, Helen VanHoy, Johnson City; special friends, Dale and Lena Ball, Theresa Miller, Betty Miller, Betty Curd and Helen Byrd and a number of nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the funeral home. Graveside services and burial will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Reverend Dale Ball will officiate.

    Pallbearers will be Herman King, Allan Little, Charles White and Scott VanHoy.

    Alma married Edward F. Vanover on 21 Sep 1940. Edward (son of Frank Richard Vanover and Dottie Mahala) was born on 7 Jun 1918 in Washington County, , , Virginia; died on 15 Mar 1973 in , Washington County, Tennessee, ; was buried in Monte Vista Memorial Park, Washington County, Tennessee, .
