    Asheville, N.C. - Clarice Oakes Hodges, 81, of 39 Redfern Street, died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Emerald Ridge.

    A native of Elk Park, N.C. She had resided in Buncombe County the past 42 years and retired as an LPN, formerly employed with St. Joseph's Hospital.

    Mrs. Hodges was a daughter of the late Floyd McKinley Oakes and Pearl Ann Adkins Oakes Lyons and wife of Murphy Hayes Hodges who died February 13, 2005.

    She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Davis and Darlene Henson, both of Asheville; grandsons, Michael, Christopher and Josh Hutcheson and Eric Henson; great-grandsons, Caleb, Tyler and Adrian; sister, Anna Jones of Glen Alpine; brother, Terry Lyons of Roan Mountain., Tenn.

    The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends following services at the cemetery.

    Sammy Ray Oaks, 62, of Elk Park, North Carolina passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 20, 2023.

    Sam was born on February 16, 1961 in Carter County, Tennessee, a son of Shirley Hill Oaks of Hampton, TN and the late Clyde McKinley Oaks.

    He recently retired from the Avery County School System where he worked as a custodian for several years. Sam loved his garden and spending time outside, especially walking his dogs and he was an excellent block mason.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde McKinley Oaks; sister, Vickie Stout; brother in law, Bill Goff; and a nephew, Chad Stout.

    Sam leaves behind to cherish his memory wife of 35 years, Darlene Buchanan Oaks; son, Josh Oaks of Elk Park, NC; daughter, Heather (Dylan Greasama) Oaks of Hickory, NC; brother, Johnny (Teresa) Oaks of Roan Mountain, TN; three sisters, Pam (Jerry) Stout of Roan Mountain, TN, Debbie (Ronald) Potter of Roan Mountain, TN, Donna Oaks of Hampton, TN.

    Services for Sam R Oaks will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023 beginning at 2:00 pm from the Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Ingam officiating.

    The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Elk Park Cemetery.
