    Frankie N. Payne Combs, age 88, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, WV.
    Frankie was born in Shouns, TN and resided in Johnson City for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Hobart and Lydia Ann Payne. In addition to her parents; her son of 56 years Wayne Combs; two brothers, Billy Payne and Johnny Payne; and two sisters, Lenna Payne and Dorothy Pierce preceded her in death.
    Survivors include: son, Dale K. Combs and daughter-in-law, Brenda Combs; sister, Marlene Helms; grandson, Jeremy Combs; three granddaughters, Lisa Reid, Sonya Rouse, and Aimee Combs; two step-grandsons, Brendon Clark and Ryan Clark; six great grandsons; three great granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
    Frankie retired from the VA Medical Center at Mountain Home with the VA Canteen Service. She was also employed at Oak Ridge during America's secret project to create its first atomic bomb, which helped to end the war in the Pacific.
    Frankie was a loving and faithfully dedicated single mother.
    Although of modest means, Frankie enjoyed the experience of travel to almost every state of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She also visited Canada, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, and Okinawa.
    Special thanks to granddaughter Sonya Rouse, who provided live-in support to Frankie for the past four years. Sonya's son and Frankie's great grandson, Camron Bawgus, had a unique relationship with Frankie and provided added variety to her life.
    The family of Frankie N. Combs will receive friends from 12 to 2 PM Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 2 PM in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. The graveside committal service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park.

    MOUNTAIN CITY — Opal I. Gambill, age 83, of 204 Church Lane, Mountain City, went to be with our Lord Wednesday, August 2, 2006, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, TN.

    She was a native of Johnson County and was born May 5, 1923, to the late Jess and Emma Payne Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Gambill, who were married for 63 years; also by Five sisters: Pearl Shelly, Lela Hammons, Vica Lewis, Lucille Walsh and Lorean Farmer; Four brothers: Denvil Arnold, Herman Arnold, Marvin Arnold and Ray Arnold.

    She was an active member of the Ackerson Creek Church of Christ, a life time member of the American Legion Post #6908 and the VFW and was retired from Melville Shoe Company. She loved cooking and caring for her family.

    Survivors include four sons: Bill and wife, Brenda Gambill, of Mountain City, Earl and wife, Mary Ann Gambill, of Mountain City, Sonny and Wife, Gail Gambill, of Mountain City, Adopted Son: Bob and wife Melinda Heck, of Mountain City; Two sisters: Nina Tedder, of Mountain City, Oshea Kirby, Newark, Delaware; Six Grandchildren: Joyce Travis, Lisa Fields, Billy Gambill, Bev Fletcher, Wayne Gambill and Mischelle Simcox; Special Friends: Mrs. Ellen Roark. Twelve Great Grandchildren, Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

    Funeral services for Opal I. Gambill will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 4, 2006, from the Chapel of the Henson Funeral Home with Mr. Gary Gambill, Kenneth Caswell and Wayne Gambill to Officiate. Music will be under the Direction of Walter and Pam Johnson. Graveside services and Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2006, from the Dunn Memorial Cemetery.

    Active Pallbearers will be: Wayne Gambill, Billy Gambill, Eugene Arnold, Glen Gambill, Terry Gambill, Russell Lewis, Bobby Ray Arnold and Willie Arnold. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Funeral Home Chapel prior the services and other times friends may call at residence, 204 Church Lane, Mountain City, at anytime.

Mr. Arnold was a Johnson County native and a son of the late Jessie Arnold and Emma Payne Arnold. He retired from Brown Brothers Construction. Mr. Arnold was a World War II Army veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of Rainbow Baptist Church. Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by three brothers, Herman Arnold, Denville Arnold and Melvin Arnold; five sisters, Pearl Shelley, Vica Lewis, Lela Hammons, Lorraine Farmer and Lucille Walsh. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Lee Pardue Arnold; one daughter, Sharon Arnold, Mountain City; three sons, Bobby Ray Arnold, Eugene Arnold and Mike Arnold, all of Mountain City; three sisters, Opal Gambill and Nina Tedder, both of Mountain City, and Oshea Norris, Newark, Del.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Ray Arnold, age 76, of 605 Claude Warren Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, will be held 3:00 P.M. Friday at the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home chapel with J.C. Greene and Mack Tester to officiate. Pallbearers will be Grandchildren. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rainbow Church Building Fund. She worked as a cook at various places including Burlington Industries, Johnson County Hospital, Boone Trail Dairy Bar, Mountain City Bus Station and others for many years. She enjoyed reading the Bible, quilting, gardening and canning, and making apple butter. Bernice attended Hammons Chapel Christian Church for many years and later became a member of Appalachian Church of Christ.

    In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Payne, and an infant brother, Dexter Hammons.

Elmer was born on March 4, 1928 in Shouns, TN to the late Andy W. Hammons and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. Elmer was raised by his Dad and step mother, Lela Arnold Hammons after his mother passed away. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons, brother Paul Hammons; one sister, Bernice Payne.

    Those left to cherish his memories include two daughters, Mary Sue (Susie) Henson and husband Larry and Sandy Hammons and husband Norman; Polly Coldiron Hammons, the mother of his two daughters and the great love of his life; sister, Viola Joines; sister in law, Thelma Hammons; several nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

    Elmer was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

    Elmer's life work was a carpenter by trade and a licensed contractor. He built many homes in Johnson County and the surrounding area.

    He was an outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and watch wildlife. He enjoyed beekeeping too. Elmer was a simple man with little needs, but loved his family and was very loved by his family. It was mostly apparent with the good care he received in the past years. A special caregiver, Monika Burgess, "Monroe" to Elmer, because he couldn't say Monika became an adopted family member.

    The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Hammons Chapel Christian Church. He was born on November 21, 1929 in Mountain City, TN to the late Andy W. and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons; one sister, Bernice Payne. He was raised by his grandparents, Emerson and Cora Simcox from the age of 7 months, after his mother passed away.

    He was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian church, where he served as Deacon and Elder for many years.

    Paul worked many years as a carpenter and brick mason. He enjoyed reading the Bible, gardening and farming. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and loved helping them anytime he could.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 68 years, Thelma Mast Hammons; one son, Doug Hammons and wife Michaeline; one daughter, Linda Thompson and husband Charlie; grandsons, Brandon Thompson and wife Amy and Lance Hammons and Sandra; granddaughter, who adored him, Mandy Hawkins and husband Charlie; five great grandchildren, Scottie, Gracie, Izzy, Macey and Michael; brother, Elmer Hammons; sister, Viola Joines; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

    He was born on October 4, 1943, the son of the late Ernest and Edith Hammons of the Forge Creek Community.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 51 years, Naomi Blevins Hammons, their son, Alan Hammons and wife Sonya, and their daughter Rebecca Dietrich and husband Marc; siblings, Jean Chappell, Lynn Hammons and wife Sue, and Larry Hammons and wife Sharon; six wonderful grandchildren whom he cherished dearly, Michael Kirby, Austin Norris, Alison Dietrich, Ethan Dietrich, Oren Hammons and Eli Hammons and many nieces and nephews on both the Hammons and Blevins side of the family.

    After graduating from ETSU in 1969, Willie worked in the Johnson County School System for 37 years as a teacher and Director of the Vocational Program. He had a vision to enhance the construction program by purchasing property on which to build and sell homes. He worked diligently to establish this successful program before his retirement in 2006.

    Willie spent his retirement years farming and raising cattle. He worked passionately and had a successful Braunvieh cattle farm with his son, Alan. Willie served his community well. He was a lifelong member and Elder of Hammons Chapel Christian Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He loved serving the Lord in any way he could.

    He recently took on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Doe Mountain Recreation Authority. He had a desire to allow people to enjoy the beauty of Johnson County through the responsible development of Doe Mountain.

    Willie enjoyed spending time with friends and family and enjoying life. He was a member of The Young at Heart Square Dance Club for many years. He also enjoyed going to the Senior Center and visiting with his friends.

    After retirement, Willie and Naomi traveled to several different countries and much of the United States including Alaska and the US Virgin Islands. They especially enjoyed visiting Israel and Austria.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson County Senior Center or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

    The family will receive friends from 1-4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Joshua Giddings officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow the funeral at the Dunn Memorial Cemetery. Jim was born March 20, 1952 in Mountain City, Johnson County, TN to Cora Mae Payne Head and the late Worley Ray Head. In addition to his father, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond R. Head (1984).

    Jim was a 1970 graduate of Johnson County High School. He was employed at Tri-State Growers for 41 years. Jim was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

    A graveside service will be held on Saturday April 8, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. from Dunn Memorial Park Cemetery (1889 Forge Creek Rd. Mountain City, TN) with Minister Josh Giddings officiating.

    Albert Glenn Arnold was born at home and grew up in Mountain City, TN. The oldest of four children born to Herman and Edna Howard Arnold: Albert, Ramon, William (Willie), and is survived by his baby sister Louise Arnold Phillips. Albert married Sarah Elizabeth Batson, and they had three children together, Steven Albert Arnold, Virginia Dawn Oswald, and Tishia Elizabeth Arnold Snyder. Their respective spouses are Pam Blankenship Arnold, Dean William Oswald, and Mitchell J. Snyder. Tishia and Mitch had the proud honor of our parents’ care for the last few years and are much appreciated.

    Albert is survived by nieces and nephews as well. Raymond and Joan had Raina and Stephanie. Willie and Millie Arnold had Jeffrey and Westley Arnold, Dale and Louise Phillips had 3 boys Eddy, & Kevin Phillips. Albert and their youngest son Travis were very close. Travis preceded him and will be waiting on the other side. All the Arnold men joined different branches of service and volunteered. Albert was proud to volunteer and serve his country in the Army and will have a military funeral. In his youth he worked hard on farms. He also played Country Western Music which stemmed from his deep roots in gospel music at church. He and his sister Louise sang on the radio a time or two, and Albert traveled singing with such names as Dottie West. He was good with cars and did a little mechanical work in his youth. He was an Electrician by trade and helped many people.
    Albert and his wife Sarah lived the majority of their lives in the old home stead on Arnold Road. He enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the animals. He enjoyed watering his tomatoes. He enjoyed playing pool and singing for his friends. He enjoyed Westerns, Football, and Racing. He enjoyed looking at his wife across the room and reminding her how pretty he still thought she was after 50+ years of marriage. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband, a good friend if you needed him, and a man of few words. He didn’t say much, wouldn’t talk badly about people. When he did talk, people listened because it was worth hearing. He let people live their own lives and he didn’t judge, but if you asked, he had sound advice and knowledgeable help. He could quote scripture for the occasion if you asked for it, but he never shoved his personal beliefs down other people’s throats unless he felt he had no choice.

    He will be missed here on Earth, but When the Role is Called Up Yonder, we will all be there. We rejoice that he is in his new body and no longer in any pain.

    Albert will lie in state at Mountain City Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Dunn Memorial Park Cemetery (Forge Creek Rd) in Mountain City, TN with Pastor David Hankal officiating.

    Sonny loved sports and excelled in the JCHS Longhorn Football team from 1965 – 1969.

    He enjoyed drag racing with his brothers, grandsons, and the drag racing community. He enjoyed his Monday night bowling in Boone and the league members he came to know over the past twenty years. He was a huge UT Football fan who always cheered on his VOLS.

    Most of all Sonny loved his family and being the “taxi” for his grandsons’ sports. Sonny was a “helper” and enjoyed lending his hand in times of need.
