James Garfield Robinson, 83, of Rt. 1, Butler, Doeville Community, died Thursday, 11:30 a.m., at his residence from an apparent heart attack. He was a native of Johnson County, a son of the late James H. and Susan Dunn Robinson. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mollie T. Robinson, Butler; two step-sons, Hensley Clark, Hampton, and Manard Clark, Kingsport; three granddaughters; several niece and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, 2 p.m., from the Little Doe Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Biggar and Rev. Richmond Barnette to officiate. Burial was in the Rambo Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis C. Garland, who died May 31, 1969. She was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

PROMINENT DOEVILLE MAN DIES
R. B. Pleasant, 53, prominent Johnson county merchant, died this morning at eight o'clock in a local hospital after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Little Doe Baptist church at Doeville, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. John W. Crowe officiating. Interment will be in the Rambo cemetery.
Mr. Pleasant, a native of Johnson County, was the son of W. H. and Martha L. Pleasant. On Feb. 1, 1906 he was married to Miss Vena Pierce, also of Johnson County.
For the past 43 years he was in the mercantile business in that county, operating his own store for the past 35 years. Prior to that he was employed by Wright and Southerland of Mountain City, and Rambo and Pleasant of Doeville.
A few years ago, Mr. Pleasant gained nationwide recognition as the father of the O. K. family, all of his daughters' names beginning with O. and containing three letters, while all of his sons' names begin with K and each contain four letters. Their pictures and accompanying stories were carried in many well-known newspapers in the country.
Mr. Pleasant was affiliated with the Little Doe Baptist church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was one of the most influential citizens of his community and took active interest in all civic and religious affairs.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vena Pleasant; three daughters, Mrs. Ola Kyte, Mrs. Ova Stalcup and Miss Ola Pleasant of Doeville; six sons, Kyle Pleasant of Willits, Calif., King Pleasant of Dallas, Oregon, Karl, Kale, Keys and Klan Pleasant of Doeville; four sisters, Mrs. H. L. Nave of Elizabethton, Mrs. Julia Robinson, Mrs. R. A. Blevins, and Mrs. Myrtle Arnold of Doeville; three brothers, Walter Pleasant of Elizabethton, Hubert Pleasant and Clate Pleasant of Oregon; two half-sisters, Mrs. Rachael Robinson and Mrs. Sallie Robinson of Sweetwater; and one half-brother, Will Pleasant of Doeville.
Active pallbearers will be Chester Davis, Ed Rainbolt, Roby Jones, Homer Stalcup, Olan Rambo and Bob Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will include Harley Hopkins, Arvil Allen, Clay Davis, Guire Robinson, Wilder Arnold and W. J. Estep.

Walter B. Pleasant, age 48, died at his home, 302 Doe Avenue, Thursday night at 10:25 o'clock after an illness of two months.
Mr. Pleasant was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Mountain City. He was a merchant in Elizabethton about eight years, but retired about a year ago. A son, Jack L. Pleasant, was killed in Italy November 12, 1943.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Eliza Stout Arnold. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton before going to Florida this month. Mrs. Campbell was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and more recently of Freedom Road Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Droke Shoe Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Campbell, November 7, 2015, and by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her daughter, Anne Campbell Davis and husband Ray, Ormond Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Rick MacLean, St. Louis, Mo., and Dr. Brett L. MacLean and wife Sheri and their four children, Dawson, Kenan, Silas and Haven of Mali, Africa; and two sisters, Pat Burleson and husband James, Johnson City, and Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton. Graveside services for Frances Arnold Campbell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Steve Davis officiating. JOHNSON CITY - Pat Arnold Burleson, Johnson City, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness.

Pat was a native of Elizabethton and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959. She was a daughter of the late A. J. and Eliza Stout Arnold.

Pat was a homemaker, but formerly worked as a secretary then licensed Insurance Agent with American National and Independent Life Insurance Companies. She was an ASL Interpreter for the deaf and worked with the Johnson City School System as well as various local churches.

Pat was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Women's Republican Club and former Girl Scout Troop Leader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Burleson, in 2016, a grandson, Joshua Grant Ramsey, her brother, Delmas Arnold, three sisters, Velma Roberts, Geneva White and Frances Campbell.

Pat is survived by three children, Tom Burleson and wife Nancy, Kingsport, Jamie Burleson Harber and husband Walt, Johnson City, Cyndi Burleson Ramsey, Johnson City; one sister, Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton; two grandsons, John and James Burleson, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to the nursing staff of Life Care Center of Gray for their loving care of Pat during her stay.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 21, 2019, at 12:00 noon, from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Pastor Dale Cunningham, officiating. Madelyn Arnold Jones, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at her residence. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnold and Eliza Veda Stout Arnold.
Mrs. Jones was a 1949 graduate of Happy Valley High School and worked in the U.S. Navy Department from 1952 to 1955 before returning to Tennessee. She retired in 1999 as Deputy Clerk of the Carter County Circuit Court Clerk Office. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones was very funny, smart, helpful and loved everybody. She enjoyed spending time at the lake and with her church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dean Jones Sr., four sisters and one brother.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Kelly Anne Jones Barkley and husband David, Cary, N.C.; a son, James Dean Jones Jr. and wife Myra Little Jones, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Megan Danielle Magwood, Chapel Hill, N.C. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Emerald & Winnie Wilson Robinson. She had lived in Elizabethton for the past sixty five years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Fritts was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler but attended East Side Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty seven years Jady Fritts, who died November 21, 2006, two Sons: Malcolm and Kenneth Fritts, four sisters and six brothers and her son-in-law: Bob Davenport.

Survivors include Two Daughters Helen Huffine and husband Harold, and Phyllis Davenport all of Elizabethton. ELIZABETHTON - Ruth Stout Grindstaff, 89, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home after a brief illness.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Wayne & Maude Robinson Stout. She had lived in Elizabethton for several years. Ruth was a graduate of Johnson County High School and attended East Tennessee State College. She retired from Burlington Industries, Mountain City. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a former member of First Baptist Church, Mountain City, and was a former member and Choir Director of Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler. She was a member of Butler Chapter, Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded death by her husband: Ross H. Grindstaff who died September 30, 1993, and by a daughter: Sherry Grindstaff Mock, who passed away November 24, 2015.

Survivors include her daughter & son-in-law: Melody & David Crockett, Elizabethton. Four Grandchildren: Brad Proffitt, Jeremy Proffitt , Xandi Crockett , and Jessi Eller. A special granddaughter: Linda Scalf. Two Great Grandchildren: Dylan Proffitt and Kimberly Ann Proffitt. Beuna 'Sis' Hawks, age 95, of Mountain City, Tennessee and formerly of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the Mountain City Care Center. She was born on September 14, 1922 to the late Ed and Bertha Robinson Rainbolt. In addition to her parents, Beuna was preceded in death by her husband Coy Hawks; sisters and brothers-in-law: Grace and Chester 'Tilley' Stout and Mae and Stoney Grindstaff and brother and sister-in-law, Park and Pat Rainbolt.

Sis worked for Al Beverly as Bookkeeper and Secretary for many years for his bean business in Florida. Before she was affected with Alzheimer's, Sis loved going to church at Little Doe and First Baptist. She loved to travel the United States.

Those left to cherish her memories include her nieces and nephews who she thought of as her own children: Hilda Stout, Mona Stout, Gary Hilton and Amy Grindstaff Miller; great niece, Tori Stout; great nephew, Eric Stout; one great-great niece and two great-great nephews.

Mrs. Bradley was a native of Johnson County. She was the daughter of the late Wheeler C. Howard and Loretta Howard. In addition to her parent's two husbands, Charles H. Conley, Sr. and Albert Bradley also preceded her in death. She worked for Leon Ferenback of Johnson City and was a nursing assistant in Sacramento, California for eleven years. She was a member of the Nolachucky, Grand View Chapter 194 Order of the Eastern Star. Rev. Robert Dallas Howard, 83, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, March 3, 2023. The family is extremely grateful to the folks at Cabarrus Family Medicine, the wonderful nurses in the Atrium Cabarrus – Cardiac ICU, and Hospice of Union County. Mr. Howard was born April 29, 1939, to the late Dallas R. Howard and Carrie Combs Howard, and grew up in Elizabethton, Tenn. He served four different Baptist churches as pastor for a total of 60 consecutive years. Robert is survived by his son, Barry Howard and wife Sabrina of Matthews, N.C.; his daughter, Donna Howard Belk and husband Randy of Lincolnton, N.C.; three grandchildren, Christopher Olin Belk, Macie Caroline Belk and Samuel Robert Dallas Howard; and many nieces and nephews. DAMASCUS, Va. '97 Mary Ellen Eggers Widener, 95, Damascus, Virginia (Taylors Valley Community), passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at the residence of her son, Walter J. Widener, after an extended illness.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Walter B. & Lillie Stalcup Eggers. She was a graduate of the Gastonia High School, Gastonia, North Carolina.

Mrs. Widener had operated Widener's Grocery in Taylors Valley for a number of years. She was the oldest member of the Taylors Valley Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence B. Widener; and a granddaughter, Amy Rice.

Survivors include One Daughter: Patsy Rice, Kernersville, North Carolina; Two Sons: Walter Joe Widener and wife, Mary, and Clarence Edward Widener, all of Damascus; Four Grandchildren: Valorie Widener, Damascus, Rhonda Cardwell and husband Kent, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Maurice Widener and wife, Pat, Laurel Bloomery, Tn., and Heather McCarthy and husband, Michael, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Six Great Grandchildren; A Cousin: Martha Stalcup Stout, Butler.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012, in the Mountain City Funeral Home with Mr. Eugene Brockley, Minister, officiating.

Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, Virginia. Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 12:50 p.m. Saturday, will be: John Forrester, Dave Pennington, Calvin Hash, Mark Hash, Buddy Cochran and Stacy Greer. BUTLER — Klan Butler “Jiggs” Pleasant, 79, 649 Old Highway 67, Butler, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at James H. Quillen V.A. Hospital. A lifelong resident of the Doevile Community, he was the youngest son of the “O.K.” Pleasant family. Jiggs was born May 29, 1925, to the late Roderick Butler and Vena Alice Pierce Pleasant. He was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church and retired as an electrician from North American Rayon Corporation. Mr. Pleasant served in the South Pacific in the Navy as a motor Mechanist. He received the Philippine Operation Medal, a Victory Bronze Star, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal during World War II. He served in the Johnson County Rescue Squad for twelve years. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Butler Pleasant; two sisters: Ola Kyte and Ova Stalcup; five brothers: Kyle, King, Karl, Kale and Keys Pleasant. Survivors include his wife, Faye Robinson Pleasant, of the home; two Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Diana and Earl Howard Jr., of Shady Valley, Evelyn and Mark Thomas, of Meadowview, VA.; four grandchildren: Wayne Thomas and wife, Guia; and Tuesday Pope and her husband, Nat, Randy Pleasant Jr. and Joseph Howard; One Sister: Ona Long, of Butler; Two Sisters-In-Law and One Brother-In-Law; Several Nieces and Nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2004, in the Little Doe Baptist Church with Rev. Kreg Smith and Dr. Willie Malone officiating. Be-sides her par-ents, Roder-ick But-ler Pleas-ant and Vena Alice Pierce Pleas-ant, she was pre-ceeded in death by two sis-ters, Ola Kyte, Ova Stal-cup, and six broth-ers: Kyle, King, Karl, Kale, Keys and Klan. Her lov-ing Veteran Hus-bands, Robert Gen-try and John Long, also pro-ceeded her death.
Sur-vi-vors in-clude her daugh-ter, Judy Wag-ner; her hus-band, Larry, Grand-son, Robby Wag-ner and wife, Ca-sey, and 5 Great Grand-chil-dren: An-n-abel, Avery, Elly, Wes and Jon, all of Murfrees-boro, Ten-nes-see. Ona was a ded-i-cated mem-ber of Cobbs Creek Bap-tist Church in But-ler, Ten-nes-see, the Amer-i-can Le-gion Aux-il-iary #61 in Moun-tain City, Ten-nes-see, Past Wor-thy Matron and Char-ter mem-ber of the Order of Eastern Star #218 in But-ler, Ten-nes-see, and was re-tired af-ter 31 years of ser-vice at the But-ler Post Of-fice.
She was an avid stamp col-lec-tor, loved cook-ing, and help-ing her com-mu-nity in many ways. She was de-voted to her Fam-ily and spe-cial Friends, and was stead-fast in her be-lief in God, Coun-try, Friends and Fam-ily.

Sidney E. Pleasant Sr., 76, of Cocoa, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida.

Mr. Pleasant was born in Carter County, TN, but had lived in Florida since October of 1960. He was the son of the late Walter B. Pleasant Sr. and Sana Church Pleasant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter B. Pleasant Jr., William H. Pleasant and Jack L. Pleasant; and one sister, Ruby Pleasant Moore.

Mr. Pleasant was a retired police sergeant and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church in Cocoa, FL.

Survivors include his wife, Velma L. Sheffield Pleasant, of the home; two sons, Sidney E. Pleasant II, and John Pleasant and wife, Donna,, all of Cocoa, FL; one granddaughter, Sydney E. Pleasant, Cocoa, FL; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Sheffield and wife, Cathy, Morristown, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The committal and entombment service for Mr. Pleasant will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — Cmdr. William J. Blevins, age 89, of Satellite Beach, FL, died on June 7, 2011, at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Doeville, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Ira William Blevins and Nelia Pleasant Blevins.

He was preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife, Will Nell "Billie" Blevins, in 1995; four brothers, Dr. Sells Blevins, Dr. Justin Cline Blevins, Dr. Carson Blevins and Dr. Raymond Dean Blevins, all of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Cmdr. Blevins was a graduate of Johnson County High School, Mountain City, Tenn., and Georgia Tech University with a degree in Engineering.

He entered the US Navy and was a veteran of WWII, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars. He worked for NASA while stationed at Patrick Air Force Base and served with honor and distinction at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He took a position in the US State Department with the Agency for International Development (USAID) and lived and worked in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Brazil from 1967-1971.

He is survived by a daughter, Angela Yvonne Bretton, of Melbourne; a son, Dr. Michael William Blevins, of Satellite Beach; and a granddaughter, Melanie Weaver, of Hamdan, Connecticut. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary B. Murray, of Vero Beach, FL, and Wanda Vee B. Dugger and husband, Delmas, of Johnson City, Tennessee. Relatives include several nieces and nephews and a very special caretaker, Victoria "Princess Vicki" Kupec.

William was a member of Oceanside Community Church in Satellite Beach and read his Bible daily. He will forever be remembered as a kind and loving soul and will be truly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

There will be a visitation from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Florida Memorial Funeral Home followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 10 a.m.

Entombment will follow at Florida Memorial Gardens.

A native of Johnson County, he was a salesman for McNess Products Co. for the past 25 years. He was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include his widow Mrs. Pishie Short Shoun; one daughter, Mrs. G.A. Pleasant Rt. 3, Butler; two sisters, Mrs. Suma Lowe, Mountain City; one brother, Claude Shoun, Boise, Idaho.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Greer and the Rev. S.W. Myers officiating. Burial was in Shoun Cemetery, Bethel Community, Mountain City. The Unaka Baptist Choir were in charge of the music. Active pallbearers were Ted Ray Myers, Sproles Nave, Riley Murray, Ivan Morley, Earl Williams, and J.E. Arnold. The family received friends from 7 until 9 Friday evening at the funeral home.
