After Mariann's death, Elihu married Cordelia E. Toone, daughter of Christopher Columbus Toone and Emilia Wyatt Toone, on August 13, 1897 in Thaxton, Ashe County, North Carolina. The children of Elihu and Cordelia were: 1) John "Sanders" Eastridge (1899-1969); 2) Milton "Everett" Eastridge (1901-1981); 3) Wiley Thomas Eastridge (1903-1903); 4) Infant Eastridge (1905-1905); 5) Avery Andrew Eastridge (1908-1987); 6) Infant Eastridge (1909-1909); 7) Nancy Emilia Eastridge (1911-2004); 8) Lydia Eastridge (1914-1914); 9) Samuel Eastridge (1916-1916; and 10) Jonathan Eastridge (1919-1919).

Elihu and Cordelia left Ashe County, North Carolina and moved to Adair County, Kentucky. The following is a newspaper article about their adventurous move.

The following is characteristic of the habits and customs of people who lived in the past generation, and many of the early settlers of this section had similar experience getting started in the occupation of farming which was the most productive method of earning a living. They frequently found water cold and inviting tor themselves and their livestock.

Following is the story of Mrs. Cordelia Eastridge, of near Casey Creek, Ky.

My name is Cordelia Toone Eastridge. I was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, in 1874. When I was 8 years old, my father went to the Pond Mountain in North Carolina bought a farm all in the woods. He cut some large popular logs and built a house; there was just enough cleared land for a house and a yard. He located two covered wagons and we started to our new home. We did not get there the first day, but drove in early the next day. We could not see any fields at all; the forests were mostly laurel ivy and hemlock pine. There were some black bears and some wild hogs in the mountains.

I shall never forget that first day. My mother was so happy to have a home that she could call her own. While the shades of night came on, the owls began to hoot. Since there were no locks on the doors, we children began to feel shaky. We would say, "Mother, are you afraid?" She would say in her jolly way, "no, I'm not afraid." We would say "How are going to fasten the doors?" She replied, "I'll tend to that."

When she got ready to retire, she slipped the dining table against one door and set a jar of sorghum against the other. We went to bed feeling safe. I lived there until I was twenty-three years old.

At that age, I married Elihu Eastridge, a widower with five children. After about one year in that community, we loaded our personal belongings, four children and a driver on covered wagons and started for Kentucky. It was fine the first few days. As we drove through the villages of Tennessee we were warned to watch out when we came to the Cumberland Mountains. We at last reached the gap and to our surprise we found one of the finest views we had ever seen. Then we started down the Kentucky side of the mountain. Rough looking miners would ask us where we were moving to, and then would tell us to be careful where we stayed at night. Some would say that travelers had been killed on Yellow Creek; some would say that it was dangerous to cross Log Mountain. At times our hair fairly raised our hats from our heads, but everybody treated us fine.

The thirteenth day we came to what was then known as Callahan Ridge, near Casey Creek. It was mostly woodland and the cattle and hogs lived in the woods. There was not much pasture and not many buildings.

We sold one wagon and team and bought a little home, where we have lived since our first year in the state. The first years were hard, but as the years passed, our hardships grew fewer, and we never regretted making the change to our new home.

On the 16th of January, 1942, my husband made his last move, he went to rest with his loved ones.

I am now sixty-nine years old and I am expecting to make my last move soon. It won't be in a covered wagon, it will be with the angels.

Horace Calhoun, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at his residence. A native of Carter County, Horace was born on October 16, 1923 to the late Edwin and Blanche McKinney Calhoun. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Ruth Jones Calhoun; two sisters, Stella Freeman and Betty Calhoun; three brothers, Carroll Calhoun, Reynard Calhoun, and Herschel Calhoun.

Horace retired from North American Rayon Corporation as an electrician and was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II and was a radio operator for General Patton's army. He was a member of Eastside Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and also as a Sunday School teacher. He was the first quarterback of the first Cloudland High School football team in 1941. His greatest legacy is being a devout follower of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Deborah Little and husband Danny, of Hampton; his son, Jerry Calhoun and wife Teresa, of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, Jennifer Hicks and husband Brian, Alan Little and wife Tracy, Jessica Calhoun, Sarah Lyons and husband Justin; two great grandchildren, Bryson and Brody Hicks; one sister, Christine Martin, of Elizabethton; his nieces, Gail Johnson, Sharon Palmer, Barbara Jones, Donna Holland, Lisa Owens, and Laura Roberts; his nephews, Tony Martin, Terry Martin and Doug Calhoun. Several great nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Horace Calhoun will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Justin Deaton, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Tuesday; or at the residence of his daughter and son at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Alan Little, Brian Hicks, Woody "Bill" Lyons, Justin Lyons, Scotty Johnson and Matthew Myers. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Holder, Jerry Shoun, Kenneth Jewett, Jack Smith, Tip Smith, Ted Tipton, David Russell, George Greer, Andy Arnett and all his Christian brothers and sisters.

JOHNSON CITY - The Rev. Joseph Vance Eastridge passed away on Oct. 13, 2022, in Johnson City, TN. He was greeted in Heaven with a hug from his first wife, Marian, a new joke from his brother, Roby and the lovely voice of his sister, Gladys.

Vance was born Jan. 13, 1927, in his Grandmother’s home in Ashe Co., NC to the late Roby Julius & Lillian Osborne Eastridge. He grew up in Teas & Marion, VA, before moving to Mountain City, TN and graduating from Johnson County High School. He received his degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Answering the call to the ministry, he earned his Master of Ministry Degree from Emory’s Candler School of Theology.

Vance entered the ministry as associate pastor at Church Street Methodist in Knoxville where he fell in love and married his wife, Marian Wilson. As a student at Candler, he served as pastor in Rome, GA and founded St. Mary’s of the Hills Methodist Church in Columbus, GA. Vance was ordained a minister in the Methodist Church (later the United Methodist Church) in 1960. He served as a Senior Pastor for 40 years at churches in St. Paul (VA), Knoxville, Friendsville, Dayton, Ooltewah, Madisonville, Gatlinburg, Karns, Rockwood, Chattanooga, & Johnson City (TN). After the death of his wife Marian, he fell in love again and married Carlene Bradley at First UMC in Johnson City. He went on to serve churches in Oak Ridge, Newport and Richlands (VA). Retiring in 1994, he & his family attended Munsey United Methodist where he taught the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class for 16 yrs.

During his ministry, Vance served on a number of boards and committees of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church including the Board of Trustees of the Conference Colleges, Conference Board of Trustees and the Holston Conference Camping Ministries.

In addition to his parents, Vance was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Bennington, Izella Osborne, Ozella Vines, Stella Maude Counts, and Gladys Hill Yarbrough; his brothers, Ernest, Homer and Roby Harold Eastridge; his first wife, Marian Wilson Eastridge and daughter-in-law, Nancy Collins Eastridge.

Vance was a wonderful husband, daddy, granddaddy, and great-granddaddy. He loved hiking in the mountains, landscape gardening and being with his family. He was known for his excellence in writing, preaching and teaching, and he loved sharing God’s word as a minister in the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carlene Bradley Eastridge; his sons, Wesley Eastridge (Joy), Michael Eastridge (Angie) and Bradley Eastridge; his daughter, Karen E. Short (Chuck); his grandchildren, Sam Eastridge, Caitlin Maxey, Hannah O’Hamill, Chrissy Idlette, Amanda Lawrenson, Tim Eastridge, Ben Phillips, Blake Browning, and Emorie Browning; he is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.

Louise McKinney Heaton, born July 16, 1925 passed away Dec. 27, 2018 at Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City, TN after a long battle with heart disease and dementia.

Shortly after graduation from Cloudland High School she married the love of her life Harry E. Heaton and became a homemaker. She resided in Roan Mountain, TN until the death of her husband in 2007. She resided in Johnson City, TN until her death.

She was of the United Methodist faith and attended Roan Mountain UMC and Cherokee UMC. She loved to sing and continued to do so until her illness prevented it.

She was the daughter of the late Gurney Arthur McKinney and the late Flossie Graybeal McKinney. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a son Joseph Heaton, siblings Delaney McKinney, Jack McKinney and Geraldine McKinney Watson and an infant sister, Elizabeth McKinney.

She is survived by children, Patsy Heaton Barnett (Don) of Johnson City, TN; H. Randy Heaton of Roan Mountain, TN; daughter-in-law, Helen Talmadge of Rock Hill, SC; Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Aaron (Kelli) Barnett, Rachel Barnett, Sterling Heaton, Sarah Blalock (Patrick), Madison Heaton and Rachel Ramsey; great-grandchildren, Greer Barnett, Ella Rose Barnett and Haven Ramsey.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at 1:30 pm at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with the funeral to follow at 3:00 pm conducted by Reverend John Hitechew. Music will be provided by Glenda Gray and Renea Smith. A private burial for the family will follow at Calhoun Cemetery, Roan Mountain after the service.

ELIZABETHTON — John Ashley, age 91, 1812 Gap Creek Rd., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Jim and Harriett Grindstaff Ashley. Mr. Ashley attended True Gospel Baptist Church and was a member of Highpoint Baptist Church. He retired from Gordon's Furniture after ten years of service. Mr. Ashley served with the US Army during World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors are his wife, Margie Montgomery Ashley, of the home, one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Joe Nave, one son, Johnny Ashley, all of Elizabethton; two granddaughters, Tammy Ashley, Elizabethton, Patty Jo Singleton, Roan Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Patricia Singleton, Jacob Singleton and Nico Ashley; and one sister, Annie Potter, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Ashley will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Evangelist Dean Presnell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service in the chapel. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime.

The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone is welcome to meet the family at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Mrs Texie B. Peters, 80, Rt. 2, Hampton, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1990, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a Unicoi County native but had lived in Mishawaka, Ind., for 15 years before coming to Hampton. She was a daughter of the late Harrison and Frances Bentley Calhoun. Mrs. Peters was a member of Union Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandchild. CHURCH HILL - Carleen C. Webb, 88, Church Hill, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord, Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport. She was born April 28, 1934 in Newland, North Carolina, to the late Alfred P. & Hester Lewis Calhoun. Carleen was a 1953 graduate of Newland High School. She had lived in the Kingsport area for a number of years. She was the Pre-need Counselor at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton for several years. She had worked with various funeral homes in the area of pre-need planning. Prior to that, she was employed as a bookkeeper and accountant for over 25 years. She was employed at the Kingsport Press for eight years. Carleen was a member of the Spoken Word Fellowship in Johnson City. In her earlier years she loved to sing and travel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters: Thelma Bennett, Alba and Georgia Calhoun and Hattie Benton and six brothers: Willie, Gurney, Tilford, Max, Ned and Ray Calhoun. Four sisters-in-law: Bertha Calhoun, Evelyn Calhoun, Dora Calhoun and Helen Calhoun.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years: Paul Webb. A very special brother and sister-in-law: Albee David & Mable Calhoun, Kingsport. and Carlos Calhoun, Newland, North Carolina. A special niece: Roma Baker & husband Hal, Gate City, Virginia, special niece: Eyvonne Faucette, Brown Summit, North Carolina. A special nephew: Tim Calhoun & wife Jennifer, and their children: Christian, Zachary & Leah, all of Fall Branch. Also, several other nieces and nephews of which she loved all of them very much. Mrs. Nell V. Calhoun Cuthbertson (Mamma Nell), age 84, peacefully went to her heavenly home February 14, 2019.

She was born the eighth child on June 7, 1934 to Starlin Isaac Calhoun and Jodie Jane Benfield Calhoun in Mitchell County, N.C.

She was married to Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson in July 1954.

Preceding her in death were her Parents: Starlin and Jodie; her husband: Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson; Brother: Coye A Calhoun (Elsie) and six Sisters: Commeylee Sluder (Claude), Amey Sparks (Carl), Agnes Cooper (Dallas), Iris Cooper (Norman), Lucille Sparks (Newton) and Clara Wise (Alvin).

Although Nell had many siblings, she was the last child born and had many nephews and nieces her own age that she grew up with and stayed close.

Nell has two daughters: Debbie and Kelly, and two Sons-in-law: Bobby Blalock and Gene Annas (deceased). Also surviving are three Granddaughters: Shea Blalock Anderson (Eddie), Jodie Blalock Walker (Seth), McKinnley Elizabeth Annas (Abbey); and one Great-Granddaughter: Lucy M. Walker.

Nell was a beautiful gentle soul who loved everyone. She worked at various jobs during her life, the longest being a server at The Broyhill Center at App State where she retired. She faced several illnesses head on and endured them with grace and willpower. Nell was a member of First Baptist Church of Crossnore. She loved to sing and listen to old time gospel hymns.

Services for Nell V. Cuthbertson will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Crossnore First Baptist Church, with Lander Hefner officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Cuthbertson Cemetery

Betty Ruth Lipford Woodard Teague passed away at her home on Monday, January 22, 2018. She was born November 29, 1930 in Johnson County, TN. Betty was the daughter of Beverly Lipford and Viria Arnold Lipford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: two sisters, Dorothy Riddle and Hazel Powers; five brothers, Claude Lipford, Fred Lipford, Dennis Lipford, Dana Lipford and Arliss Lipford. She loved gardening and flowers.

Betty is survived by her children: Gene Woodard and wife Carol, Hampton, TN, Dana Woodard, Mountain City, TN, Brenda Preece, Creston, NC, Linda Morris, Mountain City, TN, Cathy Woodard, Fort Myers, FL, and Jeffery Woodard and wife Shirley, Mountain City, TN. The Rev. J. R. Hopkins officiated at the services at the Arnold home. Burial was in the Potter cemetery.
