OLDEST WOMAN IN COUNTY DIES
Mrs. Angeline Jenkins is Dead at Age of 105
Mrs. Angeline Jenkins, aged 105, believed to be the oldest native resident of Carter County, died at her home in Watauga Valley Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Her death was said to have been the result of old age.
Mrs. Jenkins was born near her present home February 14, 1826, according to old residents, and has spent most of her life in the county. She was a member of one of the most prominent families in this section, who had much to do in making Carter County into the present prosperous state. The family came here when the county was almost a virgin wilderness, and were among the first pioneer settlers.
Mrs. Jenkins had a host of friends in East Tennessee through her cheerful disposition, and she retained this cheerfulness almost until death, although she had seen the passing of almost every member of her immediate family.
She is survived by only one daughter and several grand and great-grandchildren. At the time of her death marked the passing of one of the outstanding figures in the early pioneer history of the county.
Funeral services were held from the home this morning at 10 o'clock with the Rev. J. J. Musick in charge. Interment followed in the Buckles Cemetery

Rev. Croy Nave, 92, 504 Bishop Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, November 13, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Rev. Nave was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Campbell and Katie Estep Nave. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Bowers Nave, September 19, 1972, and a son, Robert Nave.
Rev. Nave was a member of and also served as pastor for several years at New Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and a former employee of Paty Lumber Company.
Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Frances Nave, June Nave and Carolyn and Archie Martin, all of Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Willie L. and Ruth Nave and Earl E. Nave, all of Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Chester Nave, Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Chester Nave, 95, of 250 Keenburg Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 21, 2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Nave was a native of Carter County and was the son on the late Robert Campbell & Mary Kate Estep Nave.
He was retired from Bemberg, had worked for the U.S. Forestry Service, and was a former part time employee of Tetrick Funeral Home. He was a member of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Nave enjoyed woodworking, fishing and taking photographs.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Nave was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Chambers Nave on June 13, 2005, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Campbell of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Faye Nave of Inverness, Fl; one grandson, Steven Campbell of Elizabethton, one granddaughter and
grandson-in-law, Kathy and Kenny Clifton of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton, Taylor Clifton, Dawson Clifton and Kindra Campbell all of Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Nave will be conducted on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel in Elizabethton with Rev. Derl Curry and Mr. David Tysinger, Minister officiating. The Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel prior to the service or at the residence, 250 Keenburg Road at other times. The graveside service and interment will be Sunday, December 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Emmert Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David Estep, Carl Burrough, Willie Nave, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton and Kenny Clifton. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church, friends and neighbors and the 3rd floor nurses at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

ELIZABETHTON - Edith Bowers Campbell, age 89, a loving mother and grandmother of 1209 Happy Valley Street, Elizabethton, TN formerly of 161 South Street in the Hunter Community passed away Friday, March 27, 2020 at the residence of her daughter.

A native of Carter County she was the daughter of the late John M. and Nettie Jenkins Bowers. Mrs. Campbell worked at the lunch counter in the S. H. Kress store and everyone in Elizabethton knew her and her friendly face. In the Hunter community she was known for her beautiful yard and garden. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Roan Campbell and several brothers and sisters. Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Judy Walton, Sharon Mosier and husband Don and Kathy Perry and husband John, all of Elizabethton; a son, Tony Campbell, Elizabethton; grandchildren, Jim Walton, John Perry, Tina McNair, Michael Shouse and Chelsey Campbell; great-grandchildren, Monica Volsky and husband Austin, Hannah McNair, Savanna McNair, Zach McNair, Kyleigh Campbell, Hadley Shouse and Levi Shouse; a brother, Verl Bowers and wife Mae, Hampton; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hall, Elizabethton and brother-in-law, Bobby Campbell, Johnson City. Millard Arthur Bowers, 80, of Elizabethton, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 15, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. Millard was born in Carter County to the late Bruce and Mabel Campbell Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Vada Croome, Nyoka Johnson and Lena Scalf, and one brother, Charles Stophel.
Millard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He attended Willow Springs Baptist Church and had worked for the Chair Factory for decades and for Colonial Machinery for eight years. Millard was a member of the Croquet Club and enjoyed spending time outside and with his dog and other animals. He also enjoyed watching preaching and singing on television and fishing. Everyone called him Papaw, even if they weren't related.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Betty June Bowers, of the home; his children, Linda Shyder and husband Clyde, Brenda Doran and husband Denver and his claimed daughter, Teresa Fregale and husband Dan; three grandsons, Arthur Stevens, James Stevens and wife Amber, and Timothy Pendlebury; three great-grandsons, William Stevens, Frances Stevens and Hunter Stevens; one great-great-granddaughter, Marcia Brooke Knox; one brother, Sidney Bowers; and one sister, Frances Guerra. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Clint & Virginia Calloway Bowers. Mrs. Royston was a retired seamstress and homemaker. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Royston, an infant sister, and her brothers: James, Eston, and Albert Bowers.

Survivors include her children: Shirley (Rev. Ray) Stockton, Marion, North Carolina, Barbara (Martin) Ledford, Concord, North Carolina, Linda (Roger) Hardin and Jerry Royston, all of Elizabethton. Ten Grandchildren, several great great grandchildren and four great great great grandchildren. Three Sisters: Evelyn Blevins, Helen Buckles and Nannie Morris all of Elizabethton. Evelyn Blevins, age 84, of Elizabethton, TN passed away peacefully at her son’s home surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 18, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Clint and Virgie Bowers. Evelyn was a very sweet and kind woman who loved her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, collecting antiques and going to yard sales. Evelyn was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Eston Bowers, Albert Bowers and James Bowers and two sisters, Lillian Royston and Nannie Morris. Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Danny Blevins (Carolyn) and Jeff Blevins (Robin), all of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Brandon Blevins (Whitney), Brianna Papantoniou (Nick), Brandy Arnett (Tyler), all of Elizabethton and Brad Hushour, of Knoxville; sister, Helen Buckles, of Elizabethton and great-grandchildren, Colby Blevins, Brycen Blevins and Dalson Arnett, all of Elizabethton and her grand-dogs, Tyson and Skye and many nieces and nephews also survive. ELIZABETHTON - Willie Nave, age 90 of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 2, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Croy and Virgie Nave. Willie was the last remaining of his siblings. He was employed at H.T. Hackney Company for 65 years. He was very hardworking, generous and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Willie was very dependable and well respected. He was a member of Eastside Freewill Baptist Church for 40 years. During various portions of that time he held the responsibility of Treasurer, Youth Director and Choir Director. He also held these responsibilities at East Fairview Freewill Baptist Church earlier in life.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tina Hyder; step-granddaughter, Sharon Griffith Compton; son-in-law, Larry Shorter; and grandson, Curtis Blaine Hyder, Jr.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 73 years, Ruth Nave, of the home; son, Gary Nave (Mary), of Las Vegas; daughters, Pat Shorter and Patricia Bradford (Billy), both of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Heather Bradford Merritt and Michael Nave; great-grandchildren, Emily Merritt and Austin Hyder; five step-granddaughters, Sandy, Susan, Nikki, Summer and Lindsey and several step great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Sue Nave Martin, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at her residence.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Croy Luther & Virgie Bowers Nave.

Carolyn was a substitute teacher with the Carter County School System.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Frances Nave and June Nave and two brothers: Robert Nave and Earl Nave.

She was a member of the New Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church.

Her grandchildren was her hobby.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years: Archie “Micky” Martin. One Daughter: Melissa Buckles & husband Timmy. Four Grandchildren: Shyann Rogers, Evan Rogers, Gabriel Buckles and Titus Buckles. One Brother: Willie Nave & wife Ruth. Several nieces & nephews. Her special friends: Michael Rogers and Ashley Garland.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Garland officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. JONESBOROUGH - James Dean Nave, 79, Jonesborough, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2022, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Jim was born in Johnson City to the late Carl and Margaret Bishop Nave.
Jim worked at Biff Burger until it closed and then managed the Orange Bowl close to 20 years. He later went on to work for Morris-Baker Funeral Home as a funeral assistant for over 30 years and loved his job of helping people. He was a member and Deacon of Skyline Heights Baptist Church. Jim enjoyed golfing, cooking, mowing the yard and fishing. He was such a kind man and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by: one brother, Theodore Nave (Barbara); one niece, Debbie Phillips; brother-in-law, Daniel Vineis; and father and mother-in-law, Harry and Billie David.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Linda Nave, of Jonesborough; two children, Natalie Watson (James), of Jonesborough, and Mark Nave (Marco Gutierrez), of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Darrin Lindner (Tara), of Unicoi, and Daniel Lindner (Alyssa), of Limestone; five great grandchildren; one brother, Walter Nave (Mary), of Johnson City; niece, Angela (Donald) Payne, of Gray; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Eddie) Lawrence and Cheryl Vineis; special granddaughter, Ann Barnett; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Jim Nave will receive friends from 11 AM until 1 PM on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 1 PM with Pastor Randy Robbins officiating. Pallbearers will include: Mark Nave, Darrin Lindner, Daniel Lindner, Marco Gutierrez, Jimmy Watson, Richie Nave and Donald Payne. The committal service will be held at 2 PM on Friday at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

Reverend Paul “Henry” Norman Crowe went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 24th, 2022, at the age of 83 years. He fought a good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith.
The Lord truly blessed us with Paul. Born in Johnson City, TN, Paul spent his time on earth being the very best son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, mentor, & brother in Christ. Throughout his life, Paul enjoyed spending time with friends & family (especially “his sweetheart, Helen” & his little dog Banjo), fishing, hunting, collecting old coins, and trading cars. He dedicated his life to bringing hearts to the Lord, pastoring over his flock at Piney Grove FWB for 53 years. Our hearts ache with his passing, but we celebrate knowing that he is now shouting the victory with Jesus, family, and friends “where the roses never fade.”
Paul was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Dennis R. Crowe, mother, Ruby Crowe, brothers, Kenneth “Bud” Crowe & Dennis “Doodle” Crowe, step brother, Ron Crowe, & mother-in-law, Ruth Arnett.
Left to cherish his memory, Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Crowe; son, Robert “Robby” Paul Crowe (Robin); daughters, Dinah “Diane” “Dandy” Crowe Garland Lyle (Steve) & Sonya Hesenius (Justin); grandchildren, Megan Cornett (Bryan), Jessie Musselman (Kody), David Paul Garland (Jessica) & Gunnar Paul Crowe (Josie); great grandchildren, London Cornett & Leon Paul Musselman; sister, Jean Driskell (Jimmy); brother, Jerry Crowe; step-brother, JR. Cardwell; several cherished nieces, nephews, & cousins.

Funeral services for Rev. Paul Crowe will be conducted at 6:00 PM Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the River of Life Baptist Church, 833 N. Austin Springs Road, Piney Flats, TN 37686 with Pastor Donnie Humphrey and Rev. Mike Dickinson officiating. Special music will be provided by the Quillen Family and Barbara Smith. The family will receive friends at the church from 4:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 29, 2022 in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be David Paul Garland, Gunnar Paul Crowe, Steve Lyle, Bryan Cornett, Kody Musselman, Justin Hesenius, Keith “Keavy” Rosenbaum, Allen Ellis Honorary Pallbearers: Buford Quillin, Josh Quillin, Adam Quillin, Jerry Crowe, Charlie McInturff, Colten Miller, Butch Buck, Rick Hughes.

Ernest Gilbert Bowers, 76, of Hampton, passed away Friday, August 21, 2021, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was the son of the late Eston Gilbert Bowers and Stella Mae Smith and was born in Elizabethton on December 30, 1944. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Bowers; his sister, Lois Nichols; and his step-mother, Elizabeth Bowers.
Ernest enjoyed fishing, working on boats and doing body shop work on cars. Ernest found his greatest joys in visiting and spending time with his family and friends.
Those left to cherish the memory of Ernest Gilbert Bowers include his loving wife of 41 years, Vicki Bowers, of the home; his daughters, Shelia Akin of Hampton, Tenn., and Rhonda Akin of Cody, Wyo.; his sons, Jessie Bowers of Hampton, Tenn., and Justin Johnson of Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his sister, Lucille Jones of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and two half-brothers, John Bowers of Manchester, Tenn., and Ronnie Bowers of Manchester, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
