ELIZABETHTON -- S.E. "Gene" McLaughlin, 81, 1628 Central Ave, formerly of Unicoi, died Thursday afternoon in the Carter County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mr. McLaulghlin was employed with the Unicoi Highway Department for 40 years retiring in 1967.He was also a member of the Unicoi Church of Christ.Survivors include his wife, Rachel Linville McLaughlin, Johnson City; one son, Roy McLaughlin, Johnson City; four daughters, Mrs. Violet Garrison, Elizabethton, Mrs. Jewell Stewart, Johnson City, Mrs. Opal Bennett, Jonesborough, and Mrs. Charlene Church, Unicoi; one brother, Clinton McLaughlin, Unicoi; one sister, Mary Horton, Unicoi; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She had been a Certified Nursing Assistant at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was a member of East Side Christian Church.

Funeral service were conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2001, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home.

Graveside service and interment was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Mrs. Opal Valdean Bennett age 86, Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Bennett was born in Unicoi, Tennessee and the daughter of the late Samuel Eugene & Rachel Linville McLaughlin.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Bennett; son, James Alan Bennett, Sr. (Heather) daughters, Tammy Bennett Steffey and Teresa Bennett; two sisters, Esther "Charline" Church and Jewel Stewart; grandchildren, James Alan Bennett, Jr., Daniel Lee Bennett, Whitney Cheyenne Douglas, Samantha Lee Campbell, Michael Eugene Williford and Tia Skye Thompson; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, April 23, 2021 at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family request friends meet at the cemetery at 1:45 pm Friday.

UNICOI - Esther Charlene Church, age 83, Unicoi, with faith and trust in Jesus, departed on a journey and left the cares of this life behind her on Friday, December 10, 2021, while she was surrounded by her family at her home. We are sad to see her go because she gave her family constant love and understanding, always keeping us anchored. She was born August 30,1938, starting life in a barn converted into a house. Esther is a daughter of the late Samuel Eugene McLaughlin and Rachael Linville McLaughlin. She lived most of her life less than a mile away from her birthplace.
Esther was successful in helping to provide for her family through hard work and long hours. First, as the wife of a farmer who worked at other jobs, making it necessary for her to be in the fields from daylight until dark while cooking for the family and keeping up with two sons. Then, as one of the original four owners of Jones & Church Farms, where she was integral in getting the operation up and running; working in the greenhouse, planting in the field, working on the grading line at the packing house, doing payroll, and countless other things that would come up almost daily in the early years.
She never stopped trying to improve herself earning an Associate’s Degree in Accounting when she was in her mid-40’s, working at Texas Instruments (later Siemens), while still working part-time with the farm operation. Never one to equate money with success, she said she was happiest when she was living day to day with very little cash in her pocket and pinching pennies in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She urged her sons to live life to its fullest stressing education, the one thing no one can take away from you, and following their dreams. She paid for her grandchildren’s education so their dreams could have a solid foundation and sent them on adventures all over the world. Even so, those same grandchildren’s best memories were in her front yard or every Friday night at her house which became known as mamaw’s night.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Rosalie who died as an infant, Violet Garrison, and Opal Bennett; one brother Roy Moody McLaughlin.
She is survived by two sons: Michael Church (Rosaelia), and Gregory Church (Amy); five grandchildren: Samuel Church (Ellen), Joshua Church, Lacy Church, Carina Church, and Caleb Church; one sister, Jewel Stewart; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Jeremy Dykes will officiate the 7:00 P.M. funeral service. Committal will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 16, 2021, in the Roselawn Memory Gardens.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -Mrs. Barbara Keplinger Elliott, age 78, of Washington County, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Elliott was born in Johnson City to the late Arthur Willis and Mildred Bolton Keplinger. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Mitchell Bennett.

Barbara was of the Christian faith and loved the Lord. She was a great wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved bluegrass music and enjoyed playing the fiddle and piano. As a young girl she enjoyed playing the bass fiddle with her family. She was also an amazing cook who enjoyed cooking for her family.

She retired from the ASCS office after serving the farmers of Washington and Unicoi counties for 37 years. After taking some time off to be with her family, she decided to go back to work for the Washington County Property Assessor’s Office where she recently retired.

She is survived by her husband and love of her life of almost 60 years, Glen Elliott. They loved spending time together especially taking weekend road trips. They enjoyed finding collectibles and antiques together. Other survivors include her three daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Mike Lowe, Lisa Bennett, Ouita and Chris Lands; grandchildren, Elliott Lowe, Hunter Lowe, Alex Lowe, Kauli Lowe, Josh Bennett (Elizabeth), Jordan Bennett (Casey), Savannah Lands and Ella Lands; great-grandchildren Brayleigh, Raylan, Liliana and Colton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Linda Keplinger, Wayne and Jean Keplinger; and several nieces and nephews.

Those wishing to pay their respect may do so Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow 2:00 PM at Roselawn Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Morris officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons Elliott Lowe, Josh Bennett, Jordan Bennett, Hunter Lowe, Alex Lowe and son-in-law, Chris Lands.

JOHNSON CITY - Steven R. McLaughlin, age 63, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. Steve was born in Johnson City to the late Roy and Genevie Jamison McLaughlin.

Steven was retired from Nuclear Fuel Services after 27 years of employment. He was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church, Johnson City. Steve was an avid fisherman and was known as "The great American Fisherman".

Those left to cherish his memory include, his son, Travis McLaughlin, and his wife Whitney, of Johnson City; a daughter, Lindsay Lester, and her husband Kevin, of Morristown; two grandsons, Kannon Lester and Karson Lester, of Morristown; a brother, Randy McLaughlin, and his wife Barbara, of Kingsport; former wife, Judy McLaughlin, of Johnson City.

A Gathering of Remembrance service will be held at 6:00 PM, on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Johnson City, with Mr. Curtis Hurt, Pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 PM prior to the service on Monday at the Church.
