David was the son of David McClanahan and Mary "Polly" Ingram.

He married Milly Hubbard, sister to his brother James' wife and daughter of John and Elizabeth Hubbard, on 21 Jan 1846 in Blount County. Performed by: James Tipton, Justice of the Peace.

William Samuel McClanahan.

David and his brother James would enlist in the Civil War together on 18 Sep 1862 in Blount County, Tn as Privates in the Union Army, Company B, 3rd East Tennessee Calvary Regiment. Their terms of enlistment was for a period of 3-years.

David was captured on 24 Sep 1864 in Athens, Alabama. He was taken to Cahaba, aka/Castle Morgan, a confederate prison camp in Cahaba, Alabama where he was held captive until his parole on 21 Apr 1865. From Cahaba, he was transported to Vicksburg, Mississippi and placed aboard the Sultana which departed on 26 Apr 1865. The following day, around 2:00 am, on 27 Apr 1865, approx 8-miles north of Memphis, an estimated 1,600 of Sultana's 2,400 passengers were killed when three of the ship's four boilers exploded and the Sultana sank. Unfortunately, this disaster was overshadowed in the press by other recent events. John Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin, was killed just the day before.

David was one of about 500 survivors, many with horrible burns, who were transported to hospitals in Memphis. Up to 300 of them died later from burns or exposure. Newspaper accounts indicate that the people of Memphis had sympathy for the victims despite the fact that they had recently been enemies. The Chicago Opera Troupe staged a benefit, the crew of the Essex raised $1,000 and the mayor took in three survivors. On 04 Mar 1931 the last survivor, Pleasant M. Keeble, died at the age of 85. Historically, the Sultana disaster has been referred to as the Titanic of the Mississippi.

David was mustered out of service on 10 Jun 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee. He would make the arduous journey back home to his native Blount County. On 06 Jul 1882 he filed for his Civil War invalid pension. His wife, Milly would die within 2-years.

After the death of Milly in 1884, David would remarry to Aurelia Elizabeth "Rilla" (Carroll) Latham on 22 Oct 1885 in Blount County. Performed by: J.G. Norton, Justice of the Peace. She brought to this union two children, William Anderson Carroll and Newton Edward Carroll, sons of George Washington "Joe" Latham.

Six children would be born to this union:
James Washington, Rachel Christine, John Enos, Edgar Norton, Isaac Lee and David Lyhue McClanahan.

He was 77-years of age.

David married Aurelia Elizabeth Carroll on 22 Oct 1885 in Blount County, , , Tennessee. Aurelia was born on 11 May 1854 in Blount County, , , Tennessee; died on 6 Jul 1937 in Blount County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Ellejoy Baptist Church Cemetery, , Blount County, Tennessee. John married Evelyn Sarah Garner on 12 Apr 1914 in Blount County, , , Tennessee. Evelyn was born about 1897 in , Giles County, Tennessee, . [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

JOHNSON CITY - Doris Marie Davis, 91, of Johnson City, TN went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 5, 2021. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

Doris was a loving devoted mother and grandmother to her family. She was a long time member of Grace Fellowship Church in Johnson City. She was employed by Forbes Airforce Base and Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka, KS as well as Summers Hardware in Johnson City. She finished her career at East Tennessee State University, Quillen College of Medicine.

Survivors include her four daughters Denise Kerney, Janelle Grooms and husband Ronald, Elizabeth Davis, Donna Gage and husband John; daughter-in-law Karen Davis, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death are her parents John and Evelyn McClanahan, son Roger Lynn Davis, son-in-law Tom Kerney, four brothers Dale, Denver, Francis and Minnis, and two sisters Anna Ruth and Marge.

Doris loved spending time with her family, reading the Bible, singing gospel hymns, flower gardening, cooking, and was an excellent seamstress.

A graveside service for Doris Marie Davis will be conducted on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 10:00am at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City, with Hospice Chaplain Steven Spell officiating the service.
