    JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Dennis E. Lilly, 79, of 1612 Woodridge Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Wellmont Hospital, Bristol, Tenn., following a brief illness. Mr. Lilly was a native of Beckley, moving to Johnson City in 1952. In 1957, he moved to Amherst, Mass., returning to Johnson City in 1967. He was the son of the late Ira B. and Lessie Ann Hubbard Lilly. He retired in 1985 from East Tennessee State University where he served as director of foreign students and religious affairs and assistant director of the University Student Center. From 1952 to 1957 he was recreation director of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. He served on the administration of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1957 to 1967. Mr. Lilly attended Concord College, Athens, and graduated with a bachelor's of arts in music from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky. He received his master's degree in music and recreation from West Virginia University, Morgantown. He was a member and elder of Erwin Presbyterian Church, where he served as choir director for 18 years, retiring this year. He formerly served as choir director of First United Methodist, Johnson City, and First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn. Mr. Lilly was a member of the United Commercial Travelers, Council No. 552, where he was formerly counselor for the State of Tennessee. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 486 F and AM, Johnson City, Jericho Shriner's Temple, Kingsport, a former Eagle Scout and scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Lilly was a member of American Legion Post No. 24 of Johnson City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Ray Lilly; and a daughter, Suzanne Lilly James. Survivors include his wife, Katherine "Katy" Lilly; three sons, David R. Lilly of Johnson City, Michael E. Lilly of Sanford, N.C., and Jason D. Lilly of Bradford, Pa.; a daughter, Marjorie Harvey of Harmony Community; a sister, Geneva Scott of Houston; three brothers, the Rev. Paul W. Lilly of Jonesborough, Roy A. Lilly of Bowling Green and retired Col. Ira B. Lilly of O'Fallon, Ill.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchlidren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service was Tuesday at East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with the Rev. David Fillpot officiating. Private graveside committal service were Wednesday in Washington County Memory Gardens with the Rev. Paul W. Lilly officiating.
