    NOAH A. PENNINGTON
    Jan. 13: Noah A. Pennington, 64,died at his home at Laurel Bloomery this morning, after a lingering illness. He had been a magistrate for 18 years, and was also a farmer and merchant.

    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.Sunday from State Line Baptist Church, with Rev. Hill Trivett, pastor, and Rev.E. W. Ely officiating. Burial was in State Line Cemetery, near the church.

    Surviving are the widow, Mrs.Minerva Pennington, and these children: Mrs. Chester Greer and Robert Pennington of Damascus, Va., and Odell Pennington, Mrs. Elbert Gentry, Miss Lilly Pennington and Clem, Staley, Fred, Alice, Ina, Firman, Ivan, Wallace, and Elaine, all of Laurel Bloomery, a sister, Miss Lillie Pennington of Laurel Bloomery, and five grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Gay was preceded in death by her first husband Chester Greer (1981); second husband Joe Abernethy (2006); sisters, Alice Davis, Barbara McLendon; brothers, Odell, Robert, Clem, Staley, Fred, Joe, Wallace and Ivan Pennington.

    Gay loved God and her family. Miss Gay, as she was known at Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center, was a blessing to many with her vibrant smile, caring heart and sense of humor. She was active in her community while her health allowed. Gay was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church and a lifelong supporter of the Stateline Baptist Church in the Sugar Creek area of Laurel Bloomery.

    Second to her love of God and family was her love of travel. She visited all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico. While in Alaska, on a six week bus tour, she chartered a plane and flew to Point Barrow so she could be above the Arctic Circle. Gay toured the Holy Land and fell into the Jordan River. She also spent two weeks in Australia.

    Gay is survived by her only child, Vance Greer and wife Iris of Mountain City, TN; step-children, Nancy Truitt and Donnie Abernethy (Diana) of Lincolnton, NC; one sister, Ina Bennett of Bristol, TN; step-grandchildren, Joel, Kristie and Jacob. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

    The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 from 1-2:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell to officiate. Pallbearers will be Wade Thomas, Wayne Lewis, Gary Cobb, Terry Jordan, Jerry Jordan and Mike Morefield. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Parker, Donnie Abernethy, William Greer and Larry Ashley. Graveside service and burial will follow from Stateline Cemetery in Laurel Bloomery, TN.

    In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Howard Abel; a son, Norman Vance Abel and a stepson, Norman Paul Abel and three brothers, Earl, Garnet and Raymond Gentry.

    She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and James Parsons of Blacksburg, SC and sister, Mona Greer of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm. Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Arvie Houck offiiciating. Burial will take place at 4:00 p.m at Blue Ridge Memorial Cemetery, Lenoir.

    Milton M. Arnold, Jr., 45, joined the staff of Supreme Command February 1. He was a native of Johnson County, son of the late Milton M. and Solva Fritts Arnold and a member of Valley View Methodist Church.
    He attended both Cold Springs and Johnson Ciunty[sic]High Schools before joining the United States Air Force. He was attached to a Bombing Squadron during World War II, with Technical Sergeant rating. He was a Purple Heart veteran with a cluster and many more awards of bravery. He was an active member of V.F.W. Post 60 and American Legion; and elected delegate to the national convention in New York but illness prohibited his attendance.
    He now sleeps in Southern Park, Miami, Fla.     JOHNSON CITY — William J. "Bill" Gentry, age 81, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Cornerstone Village, Johnson City following a lengthy illness.

    A native of Mountain City, TN, he was a son of the late Milton John and Chessie Severt Gentry. Mr. Gentry served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of a non-denominational Christian Church.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. Gentry was preceded in death by two sons, William Dean Gentry, Joseph C. Gentry; 2 sisters, Donna Kay Asbury and infant sister, Betty Gentry.

    Survivors include his son, Jeff Gentry and wife Pam, Johnson City; two brothers, Bert Gentry, Milford, Delaware, Elmer Gentry, Houston, TX; sisters, Sue Manuel, Damascus, VA, Ruby Hanson, Blountville, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Mr. Gentry will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Friday, April 30, 2016, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Jerome Frandle and Mr. Laren Spellman, ministers, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 until 12:00 noon in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at Cornett Cemetery, Mountain City, following the funeral service at the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    Virgie worked at the UT Extension Office in Johnson County as an administrative assistant for 45 years before retiring. She was a faithful and active member of State Line Baptist Church in Laurel Bloomery until her health would not allow. Virgie was an avid Tennessee Volunteer Football fan and enjoyed working in her flower gardens.

    Those left to cherish Virgie's memory are her sisters, Della Campbell, Carolyn Bishop, and Margaret Spivey and husband Ted; nieces and nephews, Linda Carter, Brenda Isham, Sharon Winters, David Campbell, Sherry Stout, Darlene Bishop, Teresa Tester, Bonnie Nelson, Gary Gentry, Gregory Bishop, and Bridgett Dunn. Virgie is also survived by her very special friends, Tom Fortune, Paul Blevins, and June Williams.

    Services for Virgie will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at State Line Baptist Church in Laurel Bloomery, with Michael Icenhour and Paul Graybeal officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm – 3 pm prior to the service. Graveside service and burial will follow in the Gentry Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Noah Nelson, Gregory Bishop, Eugene Campbell, Nathan Winters, Gary Gentry, and Daniel Stout.     Vance retired as a Geologist with Department of Interior, having worked in the pentagon. His retirement dream was to live on a golf course and play golf, which led to his home at Roan Valley and playing golf as long as he was able. He also worked for several years at the high school assisting handicapped children, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Those who knew him best would say he was smart, witty and fun to be around and there was several that stayed in touch with him throughout the years. Vance was a member of First Baptist Church and was known there by many as the candy-man, passing out candy to all.

    Vance is survived by his wife of 21 years, Iris Hux Greer of Mountain City, TN; step-daughter, Lee Lewis (Wayne); sister, Karen Russo; numerous cousins and extended family and friends.

    The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 11:00 a,m.-12:00 noon at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 with Pastors Ricky Campbell and Jim Kelly to officiate.     Survivors include two sons, Tommy Lipford and very special friend Samantha Stout and Wayne and April Lipford all of Mountain City, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Brandon Lipford, Christopher Lipford, Jeffery Lipford, Bradley Lipford, Stephen Lipford and Caleb Lipford.; two great grandchildren, Gage Lipford and Hailey Lipford; four sisters, Betty and Herman Trivette, Deloris and Grady Roark, Kathy and Ken Thomas and Diana Gentry and special friend Glenn Stewart; several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral services for Barbara Lipford were conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Stidham officiating. Graveside service and interment were Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. from the Trivette Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Christopher Lipford, Jeffery Lipford, Bradley Lipford, Stephen Lipford and Caleb Lipford. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Burgess, Brandon Lipford, B. C. Stout, Grady Roark, Herman Trivette, Ken Thomas, Tom Rhymer, Mike Brooks, Robert Young and Tom Brown.

    MOUNTAIN CITY - Larry Dean Doss, age 65, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday evening, March 8, 2019 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol. He was born on July 10, 1953 in Mountain City, TN to the late William Raymond Doss and Vella Carrie Gentry Doss.

    Larry enjoyed going to yard sales and flea markets. For those who knew him he liked to sing.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his children, Chrissy Doss, Wendy Robinson, Cindy James, Blaine Doss, Jackie Doss and Jimmy Doss, sisters, Kathy Keith and Angie Owens, brothers, Randy Doss and L.J. Doss, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Timmy Brolyes and Mike Bowers officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Damascus, VA; Pallbearers are Michael Gentry, Derrick Baker, Mike Crawford, Mark Davis, John Phillips and Lenny Zimburg. Honorary Pallbearer will be Landen Doss.

    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Susan.

    Tommy is survived by his sons, Brandon (Angie) of Damascus VA and Chris (Kelsey) of Mountain City, TN; brother , Wayne (Aril) Lipford; grandchild, Gage Lipford; several nephews; Special friends, Blair Lambert and Melissa Gentry also survive.

    It was his wish to be cremated and no formal service held.
