A native of Avery County, she was born on Dec. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late William and Lillie Jane Holtsclaw Turbyfill.

She was a member of Taylor Chapel and graduated from Cranberry High School in 1932.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Moody; sisters, Lora Richardson, Ruth Johnson, Hazel Hamby, Frankie Cook and Stella Potter; brothers, Charlie, Lon, Ben and Paul Turbyfill.

Moody is survived by her daughters, Louise Winters of Cleveland, Ohio, Gerri Kincaid of Pineola; grandchildren, Charlie Kincaid of North Carolina, Rob Kincaid of North Carolina, Mitzi Kincaid of North Carolina, Judy Workman of Virginia, JoAnn Winters of Ohio, Gregg Winters of Virginia, Barbara Wonkolvich of Ohio; 13 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Moody were held Friday, Feb. 3, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment followed in Taylor Chapel Cemetery.

He was born a son of the late William and Lily Jane Holtsclaw Turbyfill.

Lois Gladys Ward, 91, of Banner Elk, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017 at The Waters of Roan Highlands in Roan Mountain, TN.

A native of Avery County, NC, she was born January 10, 1926, a daughter of the late Warren and Minnie Guy Turbyfill. Lois loved crafting, quilting, crocheting, knitting and spending time in the beauty of her gardens.

Mrs. Ward was a member of the Heaton Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winford Ward; two children, Timmy and Carol Ward; and her brothers, Bill and Bob Turbyfill.

A loving "Ma", she leaves behind her sons, Joe and Judy Ward of Banner Elk, Danny and Carolyn Ward of Banner Elk; daughter, Patsy and Gary Vance of Banner Elk; sister in law, Sue Turbyfill of Zephyrhills, FL; along with her six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.

A native of Avery County, he was born April 30, 1930 a son of the late Warren Edward and Minnie Naomi Guy Turbyfill.

Billy served during the Korean Conflict for the U.S Army and retired from Broughton Hospital in Morganton.

He was a member of the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Along with his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his: wife, Gladys Lorraine Turbyfill; brother, Bob Turbyfill.

Jerry Leonard Potter, 75, of Elk Park, N.C., joined God's Army on Thursday, May 27th, 2021 at his home.

He was the youngest son of the late John H. and Stella Turbyfill Potter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: William Potter and Plez Potter; sisters: Lillie Belle Clawson, Lucille Holtsclaw and Cassie Bruton and special sister-in-law, Tiny Church.

Jerry enjoyed farming and was a fowl enthusiast. He loved his family and their adopted kids. He gathered them like the Pied Piper. Jerry was a U.S. Army Veteran who loved his country. He fought a good fight and is at peace with God now.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Potter of Elk Park; sons, Jon (April) Potter of Newland, Jerry Jr. "Tater" Potter of Elk Park; granddaughter, Candice Potter of Hampton, TN; grandson, Jon Jon Potter of Roan Mountain, TN; foster grandson, Bryson Calhoun, and great-grandson and apple of his eye, Mason Gleiser; sisters, Choy Davis of Elk Park, Ruth Hanson of Roan Mountain, TN, and Hazel Carpenter of Hickory.

Annie Louella Johnson Hicks, 81, formally of Elk Park, NC passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Autumn Care in Drexel, NC.

She was born on May 13, 1936, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Jesse James Johnson and Ruth Turbyfill Johnson.

Annie worked in the glove factory in Banner Elk. She loved the Lord and singing in the choir. She used to walk with her children seven miles round trip to church. Annie loved spending time with her family and cooking. She loved watching her cockatiel Clyde.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her: Husband, Carl Herman Hicks; and her oldest son Wayne Hicks; Grandson: Darrell Wayne Hicks; Brother: Bobby James Johnson; Sister: Lola Mae Johnson; Granddaughter: Amanda McKinney.

Buddy Joe Hamby, age 57, of Elk Park, NC, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2019. The son of the late John and Hazel Turbyfill Hamby, he was born in Avery County, NC on July 7, 1961.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, Christine Hamby, Ruby Clawson, Shirley Bare, RD Hamby, JC Hamby, Haroldene Hamby, Frankie Harmon and Kenneth Wayne Hamby.

Buddy, along with his brother, at the age of 14 began to work in construction and has always built things with his hands.

He is survived by three Children: Tammy Denise Resendiz (Jose) of Boone, NC; Joseph Allen Hamby (Jennifer) of Marion, NC, and Jessica Ann Resendiz (Juan) of Deep Gap, NC; and five Siblings: Barbara Townsend (Leroy) of Foscoe, NC, Ricky Hamby (Wanda) of Banner Elk, NC, Wanda Hicks (Charles) of Foscoe, NC, Dayton Hamby (Pansy) of Elk Park, NC and Keith Hamby of Elk Park, NC. Buddy is also survived by 10 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his Buddy's life will be held 3 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019, at Elk Park Christian Church, 220 Old Mill Road in Elk Park, with Pastor Barry Shepard officiating.

Ray Turbyfill, age 73, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Ray was born in Avery County, NC to the late Clifford Ben Turbyfill and Florence Jack Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant Brother: Billy Turbyfill; and two Sisters: Peggy Turbyfill and Geraldine Gwinn.

Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was of the Christian faith. He had worked in distribution services for Ingles for more than 10 years. Ray loved growing things such as flowers and trees — he was a wonderful nurturer. He loved children, painting and building and crafting buildings.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted Wife of 27 years: Valleree Jean Queen Turbyfill, of the home; his Children: Doug Turbyfill, Dale Turbyfill, Patty Flowers, Michael Williams, Christopher Hooks and Jake Turbyfill; 14 Grandchildren; 12 Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Joann Taylor, Jill Jones and Patty Hicks; and his Brothers: Earl Turbyfill, Michael Turbyfill, Danny Turbyfill, Donny Turbyfill and Hobert Turbyfill. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Ray Turbyfill will be conducted at 10 a.m. in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery in Roan Mountain, Tenn., with Pastor Marvin Slagle, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jake Turbyfill, Michael Williams, Tanner Hooks, Mitchell Markland, Christopher Callaway and Jordan Callaway. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home in Roan Mountain Rhododendron Chapel at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019, to go in procession to the cemetery.

On Saturday, March 14, 2020, Jimmy L. Hicks, age 82, a lifelong resident of Elk Park, N.C. passed from this earthly home to his eternal home in heaven due to complications of Parkinson Disease.

Jim was the son of the late Ruby and Henry Hicks of Elk Park, NC. Preceding him in death are Brothers: Junior, Jack, and Jerry Hicks; Sister: Deloris Isaacs; Brothers in- Laws: Buck Isaacs and Bob Blackburn; Nephew: David Hicks, and Niece: Jenny Blackburn.

Jim dedicated his life to being a devoted and loving husband, Dad, Papaw, Uncle, Brother, and friend. Jim delighted in family time. Jim’s dinner table was always large enough for the entire family as they gathered for Lena’s Sunday lunch.

He was a member of the Cranberry High School Class of 1956 and a bus driver and member of the football team. Jim was proud to be a lifetime member of Elk Park Christian Church, where he served as a board member and deacon. Jim was a founding member of the Liar’s Table at The Country House. He served his community as a town alderman, board member of Carter County Bank and the Cranberrian Corporation. He sponsored Elk Park’s Little League baseball and football teams for many years. Jim loved opportunities to advance his community and help others.

Jim was a lifelong truck driver, businessmen and tree farmer. He drove millions of miles with fellow truckers at Underwood and Weld, Rufus Henley Trucking, Northeastern, and Carolina Western, traveling north to south and east to west. In the 1980s, blue Peterbilts began hauling east to west as H&H Express, Inc.

From 1972 until 1990, Jim and Lena also owned and operated a grocery store in Elk Park, selling groceries, gas, feed, coal, fence post and just about anything that was needed. After selling the store business, they purchased Blue Ridge Orchard, growing trees and nursery stock. Jim enjoyed his later years working on the farm, daily visits to Brinkley Hardware, the Elk Park Post Office, Country House, and hanging out with the boys at H&H.

Jim loved God and lived his life at the foot of the cross as a living example. Jim leaves his family uncountable life lessons, memories, unlimited and unconditional love. His family will always remember his words to them: “pray for each other, and take care of each other,” and “time changes all things.” He would always tell his grandchildren to “keep your eyes on the road and your mind on your business” as he taught them to drive anything with a motor. When you ask Jim how he was doing, he would say “not good, but super good.” He told his children many times “In this life we will have to do a lot of things, but one thing we do not have to do is complain.” His advice to everyone was “always to pray about it first before making a decision.” As he would say to us today, “Carry on!”

Funeral services for Jimmy will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, at the Elk Park Christian Church. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the church. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at Blue Ridge Orchard Cemetery, on Floyd Hayes Lane in Elk Park.

If you loved Southern Gospel Music, shiny trucks, and stories of years on the road, then you loved being around Jack — a man with an 8th grade education who built a business to be proud of. The trucks that he loved so much all bear John 3:16.

Jack was born to drive. He took a 1940 Ford truck with a flathead engine and 95hp and drove it to Crank’s Creek, Ky. to pick up a load of coal. In 1977 he bought his first truck; 10 years later he started Jack Hicks, Inc., the company that has been his life’s work and passion. Jack was quick to share the credit for his success with his wife and employees.

In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by Brothers: Junior and Jerry Hicks; and Sister: Delores Issacs.

Left to cherish his memory are his Wife of 27 years: Angela Hicks; Daughters: Donna Spencer (Donald) and Melissa Hampton; Grandchildren: Jack McCloud (Sarah), Jacqueline Gilliam (Jesse), Aiden, Dawson, and Gavin Spencer, Luke, Mallory and Jed Childress, Sunni Dearmin, and Hayden Brewer, and Jake and Briana Pritchard; Brother: Jim Hicks (Lena), Sisters: Barbara Blackburn (Bob) and Aleta Cornett (Jim); Great-grandchildren: Brianna and Nathan McCloud and Chase, Logan, and Mason Gilliam; and many nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services for Jack Hicks will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Elk Park Christian Church. Rev. Matt Dibler and Rev. Tommy Carver will officiate. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Hicks Family Cemetery. Robert Burleson, Patrick Childress, Jed Childress, Luke Childress, Chris Bare, Tudor Hicks and Perry Daniels will serve as pallbearers.

Brenda Kay Geouge, 71, of Roan Mountain, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at The Waters of Roan Highlands after an extended illness.
Born January 10, 1947 in Banner Elk, N.C., to the late Floyd and Sadie Jaber Moody, she had lived her entire life in the Roan Mountain area.
Brenda was a 1965 graduate of Cloudland High School and was retired due to disability as a Respiratory Therapist from Cannon Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain. Her hobbies were arts and crafts, scrapbooks and she was a huge Elvis Presley fan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Geouge, in 2007.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Moody, Bluff City; one grandson, Tyler Moody; one sister, Peggy Jean Stanley, Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Brenda Geouge was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 23, at First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Geren Street officiating. The family received friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of The Waters of Roan Highlands for their kindness, care and compassion. It was her wish to be cremated.

Linda Thomas Whittington, 80 of Elk Park, N.C., departed this life unexpectedly at her home on Monday, October 18, 2021.
Born January 16, 1941 in Banner Elk, NC to the late Floyd "Shorty" Thomas and Irene Turbyfill Thomas. Linda grew up in Cranberry and attended the Cranberry high school where she and her sister were cheerleaders.
Linda was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a sister, Kathi Gray; a twin sister, Sandra Ollis; and one brother, Robert Thomas.
Linda was a member of Elk Park Christian Church. She enjoyed being at home and spending time with her family.
Survivors include husband, Charles "Chuck" Whittington and son; Tim of the home; one daughter, Beth (Mike) Wagstaff, Winston Salem, NC; sons, Mark (Meesie) Harris, Greg (Diann) Harris of Elk Park; Eddie (Melissa) Harris, Johnson City, TN; step son, Don (Mary) Whittington, of Oklahoma; six grandchildren and one great grandson. Many friends and relatives also survive.
Services for Linda Thomas Whittington will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the Elk Park Christian Church, with Rev. DeWayne Sabisch officiating.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Interment will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery.

Wayne Turbyfill, 72, of Heaton, N.C., went home to be with our Lord on Monday, December 18, 2017, while comfortably surrounded by his family.
He was the second oldest son born at Grace Hospital in Banner Elk to the late Ernest and Beulah Turbyfill from Blevins Creek.
Wayne was married to Loraine Turbyfill where together they owned the Cranberry 76 Service Station before he retired. He was a well-known mechanic and tow-truck driver amongst his other skill sets. He loved drag racing, being around those he loved and talking about times gone by.
He is survived by his wife, Loraine Odom Turbyfill; their daughter and son-in-law, Brandy and Daniel Boone; two grandsons, Bentley and Braxton Boone; his daughter and son-in-law, Renae and Josh Brown; two granddaughters, Krystal Turbyfill and Allison Brown; his son, Jackie Turbyfill, and granddaughter, Britney Turbyfill; along with many siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that have become family.

Nicholas Forrest "Buddy" Winebarger, Jr., 79, of Montezuma, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022 at his residence.

Buddy was born on June 26, 1943 in Avery County, North Carolina, the oldest of nine children born to the late Nicholas Forrest Winebarger and the late Gertrude Turbyfill Winebarger.

He graduated from Newland High School. Buddy retired after 40-plus years with Linville Resorts, starting as Caddy Master at the club during the summer, and working maintenance during the winter.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed his membership with the Kiwanis Fishing Club. After retirement, he also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren where he became the on-call babysitter extraordinaire.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Forrest Winebarger; mother, Gertrude Turbyfill Winebarger; two brothers, Allen Winebarger, David Winebarger; three sisters, Evelyn Brubaker, Nancy Frisbee, Tina Buchanan.

Buddy leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 45 years, Debbie Lane Winebarger; three daughters, Amanda Jane Winebarger (Fiance' Kevin) of Newland, NC, Nicki Lynne (James) Hastings of Bakersville, NC, Paula Bynnom of Nebo, NC; four grandsons, Avram Hastings, Chase Downing, Daniel Dyer, Jayden Bynnom; two granddaughters, Leah Brabham, Liora Hastings; Two Brothers, Bobby (Karen) Winebarger of Celo, NC, Bruce Winebarger of Marion, NC; sister, Brenda (Lamar) Stanley of Newland, NC.

At Buddy's request there will be no services. The family will have a private interment.

Clara Marie Deloach, 89, Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2021. She was born October 2, 1932 in Heaton, N.C.
Clara was preceded in death by her father, Henry Walter Holden, and mother, Clara Mable Johnson Tyree. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Deloach Sr., and sons, William Howard Deloach Jr. and Henry Walter Deloach; sisters, Phyllis Holden and Annabelle Miller; brothers, Ernest Holden, Bill Clyde Holden and Paul Henry Holden; and sister and brother-In-law, Frances and Roy Burrow.
Clara was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and the Emma Williams Sunday School Class for more than 60 years.
Survivors include daughters, Joann Odom and husband Roger and Teresa Hambrick and husband R.L.; grandchildren, Dale Odom, Remetha Loving, Rebecca Simmons, Chris Hambrick, Keith Hambrick, Bonnie Peters, Kelly Chapman and Eddie Deloach; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Iva Lee) Holden; sister, Peggy Laws; sisters-in-law, Jackie Holden and Maxine Holden; many loving nieces and nephews, and cousins who are like sisters to her.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Pallbearers will be the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Signature Health Care, Elizabethton.

Evelyn JoAnn Deloach Odom, 73, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 28, 2023, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William Howard Deloach Sr. and Clara Marie Holden Deloach. Evelyn was a housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Valley Forge House of Prayer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Deloach and William Deloach Jr. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Roger Odom Sr.; two daughters, Remetha Dawn Loving and Rebecca Dianne (Melvin) Simmons, all of Elizabethton; a son, Roger D. (Kathy) Odom Jr., Hampton; one sister, Teresa (R.L.) Hambrick, Elizabethton; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Allen Simerly and Pastor Tim Hughes officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, in the Patton-Simmons Cemetery.
