PROMINENT DOEVILLE MAN DIES
R. B. Pleasant, 53, prominent Johnson county merchant, died this morning at eight o'clock in a local hospital after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Little Doe Baptist church at Doeville, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. John W. Crowe officiating. Interment will be in the Rambo cemetery.
Mr. Pleasant, a native of Johnson County, was the son of W. H. and Martha L. Pleasant. On Feb. 1, 1906 he was married to Miss Vena Pierce, also of Johnson County.
For the past 43 years he was in the mercantile business in that county, operating his own store for the past 35 years. Prior to that he was employed by Wright and Southerland of Mountain City, and Rambo and Pleasant of Doeville.
A few years ago, Mr. Pleasant gained nationwide recognition as the father of the O. K. family, all of his daughters' names beginning with O. and containing three letters, while all of his sons' names begin with K and each contain four letters. Their pictures and accompanying stories were carried in many well-known newspapers in the country.
Mr. Pleasant was affiliated with the Little Doe Baptist church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was one of the most influential citizens of his community and took active interest in all civic and religious affairs.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vena Pleasant; three daughters, Mrs. Ola Kyte, Mrs. Ova Stalcup and Miss Ola Pleasant of Doeville; six sons, Kyle Pleasant of Willits, Calif., King Pleasant of Dallas, Oregon, Karl, Kale, Keys and Klan Pleasant of Doeville; four sisters, Mrs. H. L. Nave of Elizabethton, Mrs. Julia Robinson, Mrs. R. A. Blevins, and Mrs. Myrtle Arnold of Doeville; three brothers, Walter Pleasant of Elizabethton, Hubert Pleasant and Clate Pleasant of Oregon; two half-sisters, Mrs. Rachael Robinson and Mrs. Sallie Robinson of Sweetwater; and one half-brother, Will Pleasant of Doeville.
Active pallbearers will be Chester Davis, Ed Rainbolt, Roby Jones, Homer Stalcup, Olan Rambo and Bob Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will include Harley Hopkins, Arvil Allen, Clay Davis, Guire Robinson, Wilder Arnold and W. J. Estep.

Walter B. Pleasant, age 48, died at his home, 302 Doe Avenue, Thursday night at 10:25 o'clock after an illness of two months.
Mr. Pleasant was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Mountain City. He was a merchant in Elizabethton about eight years, but retired about a year ago. A son, Jack L. Pleasant, was killed in Italy November 12, 1943.

Letha Sluder
Letha Sluder, 99, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday September 21, 2014, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Ms. Sluder was born on January 17, 1915, in Shady to the late Allen "Jim" Wright and Gerdie McEwen Wright.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Sluder who passed away in 2005 and was also preceded by three sons, Herbert, Cline, and Curtis Sluder; and three brothers, Kyle, Preston, and Haynes J.J. Wright; TWO sisters, Retha Morley and Lena Ruth Douglas; and grandchildren, Tim Sluder, and Michelle Sluder.
She was a former member of the Shady Valley Baptist Church where she was former president of the W.M.U. and was a current Member of the Victory Chapel Baptist Church of Shady Valley. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. She was a homemaker and had at one time worked in the Shady Mountain Orchards.
Survivors include two sons, Alton Sluder and wife, Shirley, Shady Valley, Tenn., and Kenneth Sluder and wife, Eula, Shady Valley, Tenn.; one sister, Ruby Testerman, Vinton, Va.; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Letha Sluder will be conducted on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 7 p.m. from the Charles B. Hux Chapel of the Hux Lipford Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Porter to officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Pall bearers will be Kenny Sluder, David Sluder, Mark Reed, Blake Grindstaff, Jake Sluder, Daniel Morley, Mike Testerman and Dennis Testerman. VINTON, VA — Ruby Chloe Wright Testerman, 95, of Vinton, Virginia, completed her earthly journey on Monday, February 29, 2016, in Roanoke, Virginia.

She was living self-reliantly until the onset of a sudden illness in December of 2015. She was born in Shady Valley, Tennessee, on May 17, 1920, the next to last of seven children, to Girdie Belle McEwen Wright and Allen Jesse Wright, on the farm that has been in the family since 1789. Ruby Testerman's calling to care for others has been lived out as a mother and as a nurse on three continents, including Africa, in addition to Europe and North America. Ruby served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Nurse Corps in Swindon, England during World War II, attending to soldiers wounded in The Battle of the Bulge.

Ruby completed registered nursing training at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. She continued her education at both the Medical College of Virginia and the University of Virginia. From 1954-1987, she worked competently and compassionately as a public health nurse with the Roanoke County Health Department. In her retirement years, she traveled far and wide, as well as donating much volunteer time to church and charitable organizations, making new friends along the way.

She was the last surviving of the seven children. Her siblings were: Kyle Wright, Walter Preston Wright, Retha Morley McKee, Lena Ruth Douglas, Letha Sluder and Haynes Wright.

She was one of a long line of strong matriarchs. To know Ruby was to know her mother and her Grandmother McEwen. Her mind for details suited her to being the family genealogist, oral historian and storyteller. She was married for 23 years to Virgil Lee Testerman (d. January 2, 1972).

Survivors include Michael Lee Testerman and family friend Miriam Daughtry of Richmond, Virginia; and Dennis Eugene Testerman and wife Paula Meador Testerman of Concord, North Carolina. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Eva Testerman and Chrysteen Wright, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces, with whom she has maintained extensive personal ties.

Family visitation will be held at Oakey's Funeral Services-Vinton, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3.

A celebration of Ruby's life will be held on Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m., at Vinton Baptist Church, where she was an active member for 62 years.

Family visitation will also be held at Mountain City Funeral Home, 224 S. Church Ave., Mountain City, TN from 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, March 4. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, in Shady Valley, Tennessee at the old Gentry Cemetery (Shady Valley Memorial Gardens) on US 421.

BUTLER - Ralph W. McEwen, age 90, of Butler, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 4, 2016, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital with his family by his side.

Ralph was born in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Jacob Wade McEwen and Ida Lee Lowe McEwen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Ralph retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 45 years of service. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, where in the past he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School. He was very hardworking man; he farmed, raised cattle, was an extraordinary gardener and was known as the "Tomato King" because he grew the best tomatoes!

Family was important to Mr. McEwen, he was a very loving and devoted husband and father, and his extended family also played an important role in his life. Ralph loved the outdoors and gardening and he loved his wife June's cooking so much! He loved being at home and believed in hard work.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 70 years, June McEwen, of the home; a daughter, Linda McEwen Cole and husband Harold, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Rebecca Cole Allen and husband Rusty, of Raleigh, NC; a grandson, Chandler Allen, who was the light of his life, of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Kate Arrants-Stermer, of Butler; two special nephews, Dennis Stout, of Winchester, VA and Frank Murray of Stoney Creek. Several nieces and nephews, special neighbors and friends, Jack Slemp, Kenny Lahman, Eric Matherly, Junior McQueen, and Carolyn Lyon also survive.

A graveside service to honor the life of Mr. Ralph W. McEwen will be conducted at 3:30 PM on Monday, February 8, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Buddy Street and Rev. A.J. Potter, officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM on Monday, February 8, 2016, in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.

Loyd W. McEwen, age 90, of North Church St, Mountain City, passed away the evening of Friday December 16, 2022 at his home. Loyd was born September 12, 1932 to the late Walsy G. McEwen and Willa G. Nave McEwen in Johnson County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Lee Johnson McEwen; sister, Jewel “Sis” Lewis; brothers, Mark McEwen and Hiram McEwen.

Loyd was a graduate of Johnson County High School and East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and participated in numerous submarine dives, including one the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine the USS Nautilus.

Loyd W. McEwen was hired with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1960s. During his tenure, he held the roles of a Consumer Safety Officer/Inspector in the States of Ohio and North Carolina and Supervisory Consumer Safety Officer/Direct First Line Supervisor in the State of Virginia. It was in 1976 when Loyd applied and was selected as FDA's first ever Direct First Line Supervisor to be stationed at the FDA Richmond, VA Resident Post. As such, he was instrumental in strengthening cooperative Federal State Relations, particularly with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) and Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Loyd was an outstanding supervisor that went above and beyond in caring for the mission of the agency and his employees. Loyd strongly believed in training and providing detailed guidance to the employees he hired and supervised. He made sure that the employees understood what having a balanced work life meant with family even though he would work you greater than 8 hours. Loyd had high expectations of his employees and would do anything for anyone that he worked with for career development.

In 1993, Loyd was honored to receive the FDA Award of Merit, the agency's highest form of personal recognition. He earned this award for always going above and beyond as a Direct First Line Supervisor and cherished it until his retirement in Jan. 1999.

When he was able he enjoyed growing a garden. Loyd spent a lot of time talking to people and especially his North Church St. Mountain City, TN friends and neighbors.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Tonda McEwen (Adam) and Susan Johnson (Clyde); grandchildren, Shelby Hayes, April Hayes, Jamie Hayes and Willa Campen; sisters-in-law; Amelia McEwen, Jean McEwen and Carolyn Adams; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Haggard, James, and Charles McEwen; special caregivers, Marie, Tammy, Jeraldine (of Richmond) , the late Dora Adamsand many others past and present.

Mark McEwen, age 85, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 6, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He was born May 8, 1934 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walsy McEwen and Willa Nave McEwen. In addition to his parents Mark was preceded in death by a brother, Hiram McEwen.

Mark loved his family, especially his six children, the grandchildren and great grandchild and will be truly missed by all. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life. Farming was his life and he looked forward to each day.

George C. Shoun, 91, a well known owner-operator of Shoun Lumber Company, Butler, went to be with the Lord on August 22, 2008, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was a native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late William Arthur Shoun Sr. and Grace Kyte Shoun. He was a 2nd generation operator of the Lumber Company that his father started in 1908.

He was a godly man with an overwhelming love for life and his family and a great respect for his fellow man. He was an avid business man with a great knowledge and wisdom of many aspects until the day he passed. He made a lasting impact on everyone he met adults and children alike.

He was a mentor, a father figure to many individuals and obtained an earned respect from all those who knew him. His life on earth was filled with love and greatness. The impact he made during his life and his memory will endure forever. His best loved hobbies were hunting and fishing.

Mr. Shoun was a member of the Cobbs Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three Brothers: Thelmer Shoun, Butler, John Shoun, Bunkie, La., and Arthur Shoun Jr., Butler; and three sisters: Mary Nutter, Christiansburg, Va., Edna Grissendanner, Prattville, Ala., and Nancy Langlands, Warren, Mi.

Mrs. Widener had operated Widener's Grocery in Taylors Valley for a number of years. She was the oldest member of the Taylors Valley Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence B. Widener; and a granddaughter, Amy Rice.

A lifelong resident of the Doevile Community, he was the youngest son of the “O.K.” Pleasant family. Jiggs was born May 29, 1925, to the late Roderick Butler and Vena Alice Pierce Pleasant. He was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church and retired as an electrician from North American Rayon Corporation. Mr. Pleasant served in the South Pacific in the Navy as a motor Mechanist. He received the Philippine Operation Medal, a Victory Bronze Star, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal during World War II. He served in the Johnson County Rescue Squad for twelve years. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Butler Pleasant; two sisters: Ola Kyte and Ova Stalcup; five brothers: Kyle, King, Karl, Kale and Keys Pleasant. Our Be-loved Mother, Grand-mother, Great-Grand-mother, Aunt and won-der-ful Friend, Ona Gen-try Long, 87, long-time res-i-dent of But-ler, Ten-nes-see, passed away peace-fully in her sleep af-ter an ex-tended ill-ness on May 21, 2015, in Murfrees-boro, Ten-nes-see, with her Fam-ily.
She was born on May 26, 1927, and was the last mem-ber of the OK Pleas-ant fam-ily that dates from 1884. Be-sides her par-ents, Roder-ick But-ler Pleas-ant and Vena Alice Pierce Pleas-ant, she was pre-ceeded in death by two sis-ters, Ola Kyte, Ova Stal-cup, and six broth-ers: Kyle, King, Karl, Kale, Keys and Klan. Her lov-ing Veteran Hus-bands, Robert Gen-try and John Long, also pro-ceeded her death.
Sur-vi-vors in-clude her daugh-ter, Judy Wag-ner; her hus-band, Larry, Grand-son, Robby Wag-ner and wife, Ca-sey, and 5 Great Grand-chil-dren: An-n-abel, Avery, Elly, Wes and Jon, all of Murfrees-boro, Ten-nes-see. Also her son, Tone Long and wife, Anna Marie, Grand-sons, Paul, Carl and Mark, and Great Grand-chil-dren, all of Os-ce-ola, In-di-ana. She has nu-mer-ous won-der-ful nieces and neph-ews. A very spe-cial ex-tended Fam-ily is Dar-rell and Sue Ward and Fam-ily. She was known to all as "MeMe O." And like her Mother, Mom Pleas-ant, she was our "Pleas-ant Rock."
She was grad-u-ated from John-son County High School in 1946 and en-joyed her life-time friend-ships. Ona was a ded-i-cated mem-ber of Cobbs Creek Bap-tist Church in But-ler, Ten-nes-see, the Amer-i-can Le-gion Aux-il-iary #61 in Moun-tain City, Ten-nes-see, Past Wor-thy Matron and Char-ter mem-ber of the Order of Eastern Star #218 in But-ler, Ten-nes-see, and was re-tired af-ter 31 years of ser-vice at the But-ler Post Of-fice.
She was an avid stamp col-lec-tor, loved cook-ing, and help-ing her com-mu-nity in many ways. She was de-voted to her Fam-ily and spe-cial Friends, and was stead-fast in her be-lief in God, Coun-try, Friends and Fam-ily.
On Satur-day, May 30th, the vis-i-ta-tion will be held at the Me-mo-rial Funeral Chapel in Eliz-a-beth-ton, Ten-nes-see, at 1:00 p.m. with the ser-vice im-me-di-ately fol-low-ing at 2:00 p.m. Of-fi-ci-at-ing Min-is-ters will be Rev. Den-nis Peter-son, Rev. Terry Ward, and Rev. A.J. Pot-ter.

Sidney E. Pleasant Sr., 76, of Cocoa, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida.

Mr. Pleasant was born in Carter County, TN, but had lived in Florida since October of 1960. He was the son of the late Walter B. Pleasant Sr. and Sana Church Pleasant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter B. Pleasant Jr., William H. Pleasant and Jack L. Pleasant; and one sister, Ruby Pleasant Moore.

Mr. Pleasant was a retired police sergeant and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church in Cocoa, FL.

Survivors include his wife, Velma L. Sheffield Pleasant, of the home; two sons, Sidney E. Pleasant II, and John Pleasant and wife, Donna,, all of Cocoa, FL; one granddaughter, Sydney E. Pleasant, Cocoa, FL; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Sheffield and wife, Cathy, Morristown, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The committal and entombment service for Mr. Pleasant will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — Cmdr. William J. Blevins, age 89, of Satellite Beach, FL, died on June 7, 2011, at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Doeville, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Ira William Blevins and Nelia Pleasant Blevins.

He was preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife, Will Nell "Billie" Blevins, in 1995; four brothers, Dr. Sells Blevins, Dr. Justin Cline Blevins, Dr. Carson Blevins and Dr. Raymond Dean Blevins, all of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Cmdr. Blevins was a graduate of Johnson County High School, Mountain City, Tenn., and Georgia Tech University with a degree in Engineering.

He entered the US Navy and was a veteran of WWII, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars. He worked for NASA while stationed at Patrick Air Force Base and served with honor and distinction at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He took a position in the US State Department with the Agency for International Development (USAID) and lived and worked in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Brazil from 1967-1971.

He is survived by a daughter, Angela Yvonne Bretton, of Melbourne; a son, Dr. Michael William Blevins, of Satellite Beach; and a granddaughter, Melanie Weaver, of Hamdan, Connecticut. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary B. Murray, of Vero Beach, FL, and Wanda Vee B. Dugger and husband, Delmas, of Johnson City, Tennessee. Relatives include several nieces and nephews and a very special caretaker, Victoria "Princess Vicki" Kupec.

William was a member of Oceanside Community Church in Satellite Beach and read his Bible daily. He will forever be remembered as a kind and loving soul and will be truly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

There will be a visitation from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Florida Memorial Funeral Home followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 10 a.m.

Entombment will follow at Florida Memorial Gardens.

Ruth Alice Norris Elliott, 89, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness.
A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Guy David and Gladys Greenwell Norris. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton.
Ruth attended Watauga Academy and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1944. She took her nursing training at the Cadet Nursing School, Baptist Hospital, Nashville. She worked at the former Carter County Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens and Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Silas Wayne Elliott in 1996 and by a sister: Rudene Forrester.
Survivors include Three Children and their spouses: Kathy & Roy Dula, Sandra & Roy Miller and Gary & Karen Elliott all of Elizabethton. Six Grandchildren: Kristi Haws and husband Carter, Eric Miller, Jason Elliott and wife Michele, Suzanne Elliott and Chris Runion , Mark Dula and wife Taylor and Erin Dula. JOHNSON CITY - Martha Gale Rambo Holden, age 86, Johnson City, (formerly of Elizabethton where she spent most of her life), passed away peacefully on Sunday November 12, 2017 and is safely in the arms of her Lord.

She was born in Mountain City, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Earl Tipton & Ruth Reece Rambo.

Martha was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Steed College. She was a secretary for Johnson City Insurance Company, (formerly Wofford Brothers), where she worked for State Representative James H. Quillen. She was executive secretary to two past presidents of Elizabethton Federal Savings and Loan Association in Elizabethton. She completed her working career as a secretary at the Carter County Court Clerk's Office.

She was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton. She loved the Lord and provided a listening ear to many friends and family members through the years, always ready to give encouragement and love.

Martha was a very community-oriented individual. She was a member of the Woman's Civic Club for many years where she served in several capacities including past president. She was a volunteer with the American Heart Association and was a delegate to the State American Heart Association Annual Meeting.

In addition to her parents and brother James Samuel "Jim" Rambo, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Bill Holden.

Those remaining to cherish Martha's memory include: a daughter & son-in-law: Mikki & Rocky Crowe of Johnson City, a grandson: Weston Crowe of Johnson City, a sister: Earline Barron of Petaluma, California, a sister-in-law: Shirley Rambo of Elizabethton, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and beloved dog, Addie.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2017 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Delbert Storie officiating. Burial will follow the service. Gladys Ailene Goodwin Mizell, age 90, went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Friday, May 25, 2018 in Tampa, Florida. She was born December 10, 1927 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Ronder Hubert Goodwin and Beulah E. Rambo Goodwin. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Byron Butler Mizell also a brother Ronder H. Goodwin Jr., sisters Loraine Snyder, Betty Jo Rhudy and Anna Stout Ethridge.

Ailene graduated Emory and Henry College in 1951. She worked as a legal secretary at the Dean Atchison Law Firm in Washington, DC, and later in civil service at Eglin A.F.B. prior to retiring to become a homemaker.
She was an early and long time resident of Poquito Bayou in Okaloosa County, FL.

Ailene enjoyed decorating, gardening, traveling and studying history and current events. She was a member of the Doe Valley United Methodist Church, the Augusta Jane Evans Wilson Chapter 2640, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Princess Hirrihigua Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her daughter Lunelle Siegel McCallister and her husband David McCallister of Temple Terrace, FL; three nieces and five nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday June 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the Shoun Goodwin Cemetery, 123 Old Butler Road, Mountain City, TN.

She was born March 21, 1934 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Ronder Hubert Goodwin and Beulah E Rambo Goodwin. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husbands Joey B. Stout and John F. Ethridge also a brother Ronder H. Goodwin Jr., sisters Loraine Snyder, and Betty Jo Rhudy. Anna enjoyed Antiquing, traveling and stamp collecting. She was a member of the Doe Valley United Methodist Church. She worked with the Johnson County School Systems and at J.C. Penny.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Annette Stout Morrison and husband John, Johnson City, TN., Connie J. Stout Hill and husband Gary, Johnson City, Tn., a son Gary B. Stout and wife Hatsue, Sumter, S.C. A sister Ailene Goodwin Mizelle, Tampa, Fl., Reba Kate Stout Vaught, 3 nieces and 5 nephews including special niece Kerwin Corrnett and several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. from the Shoun Goodwin Cemetery. with Rev. Gary Hill and Rev. Michael Lester officiating. Music will be provided be Rev. Douglas Grove-DeJarnett.

BLUFF CITY - Malcolm “Bud” Snyder Rambo, age 89, of Bluff City, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 16, 2020, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 15, 1930 in Elizabethton, Tenn., a son of the late Argil Gresham and Gladys Rachel Snyder Rambo. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Rambo; and sister, Edna Adams.

Bud was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and served as Security. Throughout his career, he was a salesman and purchasing agent for Mitchell-Powers Hardware Company for over 35 years. Bud loved farming and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean S. Rambo; daughter, Mitzi Mooberry and husband Steve; brother, Stuart Rambo and wife Sandra; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Dr. Allen Robert and Rev. Johnny Burton officiating. A committal and interment service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Mountain City, Tenn. Pallbearers will be Larry Litz, Harvey Spence, Bud Bolling, Tom Snyder, Kevin Barb and Lynn Snyder. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Roundtable at the Slater Center.

Alton L. Sluder, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at his home in Shady Valley, Tennessee. He was born December 19, 1938 to the late Otis and Letha Sluder. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Tim and his brothers: Cline, Curtis and Herbert Sluder.

Alton was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley except for a few years that he lived in Maryland where during that time he drove the bus for Continental Trailways and also transported the Washington Redskins to and from games. Alton owned and operated Sluder Brothers Logging with his brothers for many years. He and his wife Shirley retired from S&S General Store.

Alton was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 56 years, Shirley Jones Sluder; daughter, Pattie Taylor and husband Rick and their sons: Austin Shoun, Matthew Shoun, Chad Taylor, Triston, Taylor and Garrett Taylor; daughter, Jackie Sluder Grindstaff and husband Blake and their daughter, Josie Cheyenne Grindstaff; grandson, Jake Sluder (Tim's Son); brother, Kenneth Sluder and wife Eula; several nieces, nephews and extended family members as well as many close family friends.

Larry Dean Shoun, 69, Butler, departed from this earth to go to his forever home Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was born July 16, 1949, in Mountain City, and resided in his beloved community of Butler, Tn his entire life. Larry was a graduate of Hampton High School in 1967 where he had a successful football career that earned him a scholarship at Less-McRae College in Banner Elk. His football career continued there for a freshman year. He then attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association Certified Lumber Grader Program. He was a rock, both physically and spiritually. He never faltered in his beliefs or his work ethic. He strived every day to make everything and everyone he touched better than he found it. He always wanted what was best and never failed to do what was right. He was a lover of fellowship with all people and animals, he loved football, good food, giving lectures and traveling with his wife and dear friends Eddie and Pat Clawson. He was the 3rd generation owner and operator of Shoun Lumber which was his life's passion outside of his family. He loved to work at the mill and everything it entailed. Some of his favorite hobbies included hauling and delivering firewood and mulch to customers and delivering hams at Christmas time to friends, neighbors and customers. He would often disappear for hours "playing" on his loader moving his dirt and mulch. He was a member of the Butler Ruritan Club where he had served as President. Larry loved his communities of Johnson & Carter County; he supported local schools in their sports program and supported several organizations. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father George C. Shoun who died August 22, 2008.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years: Deana Grindstaff Shoun. His Children: John Burleson & wife Amanda, Butler, Jill Shoun Hughes & husband Bryan, Johnson City, Katie Shoun Harrell & husband John, Butler and Kelly Shoun, Butler. David Allen Church, Jr. "Jerry", age 53, of Pedro Shoun Road, Mountain City, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 17, 2004 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born in Banner Elk, NC, but lived most of his life in Johnson County. He was born October 21, 1950 to David Allen Church, Sr. of Mountain City and the late Lois Shoun Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother Dennis Chuch. Jerry was a graduate of Johnson County High School and worked as a correctional officer at the North East Correctional Center. Jerry was also a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the U. S. Marines and attended Bethany Baptist Church. He loved collecting pipes, collecting coins and going metal detecting. Surviving are his father, David Allen Church, Sr. of Mountain City; two brothers: Bob Church and wife Helen of Nashville, TN and John Church of Dallas, TX; two nephews: David and Chris and a niece, Michelle. Funeral services for Jerry will be held at 1 p. m. Monday from Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Henson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery following the services. NEWPORT – Roy Daniel Nave, 80, Newport, TN was ushered into the presence of the Savior he loved on November 18, 2015.

He was born in Doeville, Tennessee to the late Nick & Anna Opal Stalcup Nave on December 25, 1934. The family moved from Tennessee to Oregon in 1947, and then to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1950, where he lived until May 2015. He was a 1953 Graduate of Mishawaka High School and a lifelong employee of Ball Band, until his retirement in 1990. He married Marilyn Patricia (Pat) Scott on October 30, 1954, faithfully serving her as godly husband and care giver for 61 years.

Roy placed his faith in Jesus Christ in 1957, and lived as a man of God. He was loved and respected by people in Indiana, Tennessee and in Texas, where he & Pat wintered for 17 seasons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Myretha Arnold.

He is survived by his loving wife Pat and son: Daniel (Cheryl) Nave of Newport, TN; Granddaughters: Andrea (Dave)Johnson of Grand Rapids, MI; Sara (Jon)Fisher of Hopkinsville, KY; grandson: Matthew (Carrie) Nave of Howard City, MI: sister: Nikkie Mae (Chuck) Buck of Mishawaka, Indiana, a sister-in-law: Mary Lou (Kenny) Myers of Niles, MI; eight great grandchildren he loved intensely; his friend of 30 years, Larry (Candy) Desimone of Osceola; and Texas snowbird friend, Steve (Irene) Hauersperger of Cerro Gordo, IL.

She has served on the Board of Directors for the Elizabethton/Carter County Boys and Girls Club, the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club and the Christian Women's Club of Johnson City. She was an employee of Tri-State Container Corporation for fifteen years. She was the secretary at Central Elementary School for five years before becoming an administrative assistant at Tetrick Funeral Home from 1994 to her retirement in 2006, where she continued working part time until 2012.

Tommy Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, was dead on arrival at Johnson County Memorial Hospital after a logging accident Monday morning.

A life-long resident of Johnson County, Mr. Arnold was employed as a logger and was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold, in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Faye Brickey Arnold; one daughter, April Dawn Arnold, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy) Snyder, Rt. 3, Butler; his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Broyles, Rt. 3, Butler; and his paternal grandfather, Ed Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler. William Kevin Hampton, lovingly known as “Catbird,” 50, of Butler, TN passed away on January 14, 2022 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Kevin was currently a teacher in the Johnson County School System where he was also a graduate in 1989.

Kevin was the proud father of two boys, Blade and Gage Hampton, who he loved watching play sports through the years. Along with spending time with his boys, Kevin loved his time on Watauga Lake where he could be found fishing at any time day or night. He was also an avid University of Tennessee football fan, always wearing the orange and white. Kevin most of all was a big time family man, and he had a great compassion for kids.

Kevin was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, J.E. and Mary Kate Arnold, his paternal grandmother, Kate Hampton Hicks, and his companion, Bledsoe Jax.

Kevin is survived by his parents, Herb and DeEtte Hampton; his boys, Blade and Gage Hampton and their mother, Jodi Hampton; his sister, Liza Sykes; his aunts, Phyllis Matherly and husband Mack, Burnadene Blevins and husband Mark, Lesa Brown and husband Tim; and his beloved cousins whom he referred to as “Cuz.” He is also survived by his girlfriend, Krissy Walters and her daughter, Ariel and last but certainly not least, his many special friends who are too numerous to list.

The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, concern, and support throughout Kevin’s sickness. A special thank you to Blake Grindstaff for all your help.

It was Kevin’s wish to be cremated.
