    ALICE GARRISON
    Mrs. Alice Garrison, 84, died at the home of her granddaughter Mrs. Fred Donnelly of Elizabethton, Route 1, yesterday at 2:45 p.m. after a long illness. Mrs. Garrison was the widow of the late John Garrison. She was a member of the Valley Forge Christ Church, and had been a member for the past 58 years. She was one of the oldest members of the community.
    Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. W. R. Meredith, Mrs. C. E. Treadway, Mrs. S. S. Williams, Mrs. D. B. Vanhuss; two sons, Carl and Kell Garrison, all of Elizabethton, Route 1; four brothers, Blaine and W. A. Chambers of G St. extension, D. M. Chambers, of Johnson City; thirty five grandchildren; thirty seven great grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Valley Forge Christian Church Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. with the Rev. J. J. Musick pastor of the church in charge, assisted by Rev. E. A. Hoffman and Rev. Fred Smith. Burial will be made in the Smith Cemetery.
    Music will be furnished by the church choir.
    Active pallbearers the nephews, Claude Meredith, Mack Hathaway, Hugh Chambers, Ray Chambers, D. M. Chambers, Jr., Monroe Stevens, John Humphrey, and Dan Grindstaff.

Hyder, John Meredith, George Blevins, Clyde Nave, Joe Heaton, Henry Russell, Luther Willis, Ben Treadway, Dessie Trivett, Arthur Treadway, Miss Ruth Slemp, Hazel Ellis, Ruth Thomas, Laura Grindstaff, Mrs. Estel Hyder, and Hugh Jenkins.
    The body will be removed to the church at 2 p.m. to lie in state until time for the services.
    Roy Hathaway Funeral Home is in charge.
    The body will be returned to the home of her daughter Mrs. W. R. Meredith Route 1, this afternoon at 4 p.m.

    W. C. GARRISON DIES AT HOME
    William Cling Garrison, aged 50, died at his home in the Lilly Addition Wednesday night at 6 o'clock, after a prolonged illness. He was a member of the Christian Church at Valley Forge for 40 years, during which time he has been a faithful worker.
    Survivors are his widow, Mrs. W. C. Garrison and six children, Ina, Roy, Ernest, Clarence, Robert and Gale Garrison. Four sisters, Mrs. W. R. Meredith, Mrs. C. R. Treadway, Mrs. Grown Vanhuss, Mrs. S. S. Williams; and two brothers, Carl and Gale Garrison, also his mother, Mrs. Alice Garrison.
    Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at the Christian Church, Valley Forge, at three o'clock, with the Rev. P. P. Williams officiating. Interment was in the Smith Cemetery.
    Active pallbearers were Ed Jenkins, John Merritt, N. T. Williams, W. C. Williams, W. L. Hendrick, and James Treadway.

    A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Cling and Bessie Headrick Garrison. Mr. Garrison was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church and a former Elder for forty years.

    Mr. Garrison was retired from Univac. He was a Air Force Veteran of World War II, an avid fisherman and loved to work in his garden. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

    Mrs. Nave was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Sutton
    and Lillie Garrison Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
    death by her husband, C.A. Nave, a brother, Fred Williams, and two sisters,
    Hazel Jones and Annie McInturff.

    Mrs. Nave was a mother and homemaker. She had volunteered for 20 years as a
    Pink Lady at Carter County Memorial Hospital and Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

    Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Faye Ella and Roy Freeman,
    Oak Ridge, and Clara Mae Stanley, Elizabethton; a grandson, Justin Stanley,
    Elizabethton; a step-granddaughter, Dianna Lynn Doughton, and a step-great-
    granddaughter, Ashleigh Pratt, both of Portland, Ore. Several nieces and
    nephews also survive.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Nave will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 28,
    in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. C. Mack Turner
    officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 9 a.m.
    Friday, July 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at the
    cemetery at 8:55 a.m. Friday. The family will receive friends at the funeral
    home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday or at the residence, 313 West H Street,

    JONESBOROUGH - C. F. (Gary) Garrison, 92, of Jonesborough, died Friday, April 19, 2019, after an extended illness.

    He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Olene Sheffield Garrison; his devoted children Stephen Garrison (Linda) of Conyers, Georgia; Karen Ann Heaton of Johnson City; and Carl Garrison (Debora) of Seattle, Washington. He was especially close to and will be missed by his brothers Ray Garrison (Susan)

    of Kingsport and Clyde Garrison (Joyce Dean) of Johnson City. He was also treasured by his seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his two sisters, Joyce Broome and Marie Matherly, and son-in-law Patrick Heaton.

    C.F. was born on November 12, 1926, in the Valley Forge community of Elizabethton, Tennessee, to Carl and Alida Garrison and was a graduate of Hampton High School. He also graduated from East Tennessee State College with a degree in technical engineering and mathematics.

    During World War II, C.F. served as an instructor for the U.S. Army at Ft. Benning, Georgia. After his military service, he married Olene Sheffield of Paragould, Arkansas, on June 6, 1951. C.F. was a math teacher at Elizabethton High School and also taught high school math in Augusta, Georgia. He was later employed by General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio, before moving back to East Tennessee where he worked at Magnavox and then at Nuclear Fuel Services. Later, he also worked as a general contractor and a realtor.

    C.F. was happiest when he was with his family and his brothers, at church, or when he was meeting new people. He never knew a stranger and always had a smile and time to tell stories and learn about those he met. He delighted in being in his woodworking shop planning projects and swapping stories with his two brothers who dubbed themselves "The 3 Gs." He also loved family gatherings, especially coordinating family reunions and carrying on the apple butter-making family tradition started by his parents. His eldest grandson Jeremy Garrison and wife Amanda continue to carry on that tradition today.

    C.F. was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church and during his life served as elder and deacon in various churches of which he was a member. He was always involved in church activities and particularly wanted to help nearby churches who were struggling with membership numbers or needed help building programs. He would help with any needs he could fulfill.

    ELIZABETHTON - Marie G. Matherly, age 87, of Elizabethton, changed her address on Monday, March 27, 2017, she was born to Alida Mae Rash and Carl Fletcher Garrison on October 27, 1929. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Howard D. Matherly; a sister, Betty Joyce Broome; and a great nephew, Austin James Frazier.

    Marie attended ETSU for 2 years and was a graduate of Steed College. She worked at North American Rayon Corporation and after 31 years of service, she retired in 1994 as the Purchasing Coordinator. She was a member of the West Side Christian Church, having been active in the Lydia Circle, Homebuilders Sunday School Class and other activities of the church.

    Left to cherish her memory include three brothers and their wives: Clyde and Joyce Dean Garrison, C.F. and Olene Garrison, and Ray and Sue Garrison; a brother-in-law, Carroll Broome; four nieces: Jama Marie Frazier, Karen Heaton, Deborah Lowery and Teresa Sands; and three nephews: Eric Garrison, Carl F. Garrison and Stephen Garrison.

    Joyce Broome, 73, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at her residence, surrounded by her family, following a brief illness. Joyce was born in Valley Forge on January 13, 1940, to the late Carl and Alida Rash Garrison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Austin James Frazier; and a step son, Brian Broome. Mrs. Broome was a retired Registered Nurse Practitioner from the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Joyce was a very special and caring person that touched the lives of so many people. She loved to sew, cook and have dinners with her family and friends. She was very active in her church. She never stopped being the nurse practitioner that she was and always cared for those around her in their time of need. She was a very special mother and a very special friend to those around her. She was truly an Angel. The Lord called her home after an illness from which she could not recover; her love and devotion to her family and friends will leave lasting memories for everyone she touched. A special thank you goes out to all of the family and friends that helped her in her time of need. Survivors include her husband of twenty nine years, Carroll Broome, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Jama & Jim Frazier, Elizabethton; one step daughter, Linda Crowe, Elizabethton; one sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Howard Matherly, Elizabethton; three brothers and their wives, Clyde and Joyce Dean Garrison, Johnson City, Ray and Sue Garrison, Kingsport, and C.F. and Olene Garrison, Jonesborough; and several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, "Millie." The celebration of life service for Mrs. Broome will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 25, 2013, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Ray Amos officiating. Music will be under the direction of First United Methodist Church Music Department.     Mrs. Blevins was a native of Carter County who had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Brown VanHuss and Eliza Garrison VanHuss. In addition to her parents, her husband, James W. Blevins; three brothers, Ford VanHuss, John VanHuss Sr. and Haskiel VanHuss; one sister, Mary Bell VanHuss; two nephews, John VanHuss Jr. and Glen Doherty; one niece, Gail Marion Wilson; also preceded her in death.

    Mrs. Blevins retired from Thomas Industries. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Johnson City, where she was a member of the Mr. And Mrs. Class.

    Survivors include: one daughter, Peggy Jean Tester, of Johnson City; two sisters, Margaret Doherty, of Roanoke, Virginia, and Hazel Marion, of Elizabethton; two brothers, Dick VanHuss and wife, Martha, and Harold VanHuss, both of Elizabethton; one grandson, Jerry Tester, of Johnson City; one great granddaughter, Rebecca Tester, of Chattanooga; one great great grandson, Zachary, of Chattanooga; two sister-in-laws, Louise Downs, of Johnson City, and Helen VanHuss of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews.

    The funeral service for Mrs. Laura Florence VanHuss Blevins will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, May 7, 2011, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Steve Hill, Minister, will officiate.

    GRAY — Martha "Ann" Butner, 77, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 5, 2016. She departed this life from the Life Care Center of Gray.
    Mrs. Butner was born July 16, 1939 in the Siam community of Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Earnest and Gladys Bowers Meredith. She had lived in the Gray area for around 40 years.
    Martha Ann Butner was a member of Crossroads Christian Church and the Bereans Sunday School Class in Gray. She was also a member of the Johnson City Community Center and a former member of Elizabethton First Christian Church.
    Martha graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1957. She married Richard Butner on June 13, 1970 and was a homemaker who lovingly cared for her family.
    In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by sister, Shirley Jane Meredith, and brother, J. Meredith.
    Those left to cherish her memory are husband, Richard Butner; daughter, Rachel Renee Butner Golden and husband, Mike; niece, Sara Bowers; and nephews, David Meridith and Robin Meridith.
    The family received friends on Monday, August 8, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Crossroads Christian Church in Gray. A Celebration of Life immediately followed with Pastor Clint Andrews officiating.

    Laura was a native of Gray, Tennessee, and she lived there all her life. She was a Baptist and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee.

    In addition to her father those left to cherish Laura’s memory are her loving husband Randy Spears; four daughters, Patricia Byrd, Cameron VanHuss, Stephanie VanHuss, and Ashley Harrell & husband Aaron; two sons, David Tucker and Davey Spears and wife Anabelle; five grandchildren, Kaylyn, Nicole, Anneliese, Alaina, and Khloe.

    The Receiving of Friends and Family is scheduled at Snyder’s Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 7, 2020, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM. A Memorial Service to honor Laura’s life will follow the Receiving service and will begin at 3:00 PM, officiating the service will be David Spears.
