    Lena Bowers Peters, 86, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Lena was born in Carter County to the late Emmert Caleb Bowers and Rowena Bell Brown Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bynum Peters; 15 brothers and sisters; and a great-grandson, Caden Bradshaw.
    Lena was the sweetest, most kind, gentle and forgiving hearted, tender and compassionate woman. She retired from Texas Instruments as a quality control technician and then worked seven additional years at Big Lots of Elizabethton. She was a member of Roan Street Church of God and enjoyed decorating, flowers, gardening and associating with friends and spending time with her family.
    Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Vickie Pearce of Elizabethton; a grandson, Brian Bradshaw and wife Becky of Elizabethton; two great-grandsons, Colton Bradshaw and Collin Bradshaw, both of Elizabethton; and a special nephew, Donald Bowers of Erwin.

    ELIZABETHTON — Rev. Horace C. Bowers, 75, of 287 Old Lacy Hollow Road, Elizabethton, went home to heaven be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 18, 2010, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, TN, following an extended illness.

    He was the son of the late Emmitt and Rowena Brown Bowers and was a native of Carter County in the Hampton community. Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a carpenter, minister, former employee of Great Lakes Research, served as an associate pastor for eleven years at Hunter First Baptist Church and was a member of the Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

    In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers and nine sisters.

    Rev. Bowers is survived by his wife of 51 years, Violet Carrier Bowers, of the home; one son, Jonathan Horace Bowers, of Knoxville, TN; one daughter and son-in-law, Rowean and Kenneth Dunn, of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Daniel Dunn and wife, Teresa, of Johnson City, David Dunn and wife, Jessica, and Dianna Dunn, all of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Chaz Deakins, Alyssa Dunn, Zachariah Dunn, John Ethan Deakin, all of Elizabethton, and Caleb Rosenbalm, of Johnson City; a soon to be born great granddaughter, Karleigh Grace Dunn; a sister, Lena Peters, of Elizabethton; and a beloved dog, little bit. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Rev. Bowers will be conducted on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 8:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Rev. Daniel Dunn, Rev. Dale Greenwell and Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating.

    The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM on Wednesday prior to the service.

    Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:45 PM to go in procession to the cemetery.

    The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 21, 2010, at Emmert Cemetery in Elizabethton. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post No. 49. Active pallbearers will be Levi Hochstetier, Robert Rosenbalm, Jack Berry, Jerry Lunsford, Lewis Blevins and Gerald Holly. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, friends and neighbors.

    ELIZABETHTON - Betty Ivalee Bell, age 89, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Woodrow Bowers and Blondie Crowe. Betty was a member of Pleasant Beech Baptist Church. She was an excellent homemaker and very crafty. Betty took pride in all of her work.

    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Bell; a sister, Charlotte Renfro; two brothers, Buryl Bowers and Tony Bowers and a son, Randy Dugger. Those left to cherish her memory include her two daughters, Judy Miller and husband Jerry and Brenda Pierce and late husband Monty, of Butler; son, Harvey Dugger; five sisters, Lois Hughes, of Elizabethton, Carolyn Bishop, of Michigan, Patsy Presnell and husband John and Beulah Lunceford, all of Hampton and June Saults, of Johnson City; a brother, Terry Bowers and wife Barbara, of Johnson City and several nieces, nephews and grandchildren also survive.

    The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 between the hours of 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home.

    A graveside service and interment will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 12, 2021 in the Garland Cemetery, Erwin with Chaplain Alan officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 A.M. on Thursday.

    HAMPTON - Beulah Jacqueline Lunceford, age 86, of Hampton, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 11, 2021 at her residence. Beulah was born in Carter County to the late Woodrow and Blonnie Crowe Bowers. In addition to her parents, Beulah was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lunceford; three sisters; and three brothers.
    Beulah was a very special Mother and sister who worked hard and took care of her family. She was a woman of God and a member of Valley Forge Christian Church, where she was known as the hat lady. Beulah was a very talented seamstress and enjoyed gardening and working outside. She also enjoyed watching Nascar and football.
    Those left to cherish Beulah’s memory include her daughter, Janet Lunceford and Ray Price; her sons, Lester Lunceford and wife Shirley and Jerry Lunceford and wife Jennifer; two granddaughters, Heather Price and Kyle Boling and Donna McKeehan and husband Alan; three brothers, Terry Bowers and wife Barbara, Mike Warren and Kenny Warren and wife Jeannie; and three sisters, Patsy Presnell and husband John, June Saults and Carolyn Bishop. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Lois V. Bowers Hughes, 71, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Monday, August 30, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Woodrow Bowers and Blonnie Crowe Bowers. Lois was a very giving person and loved everyone. She enjoyed floral decorating and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lois was of the Baptist faith. She was very close to her sister June, of Michigan, with whom she spent many hours on long distance phone conversations.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her best friend and father of her children, Robert D. Hughes; one son, Johnny Hughes; two sisters, Charlotte Renfro and Betty Bell; two brothers, Buryl Bowers and Tony Bowers; and her best friend with whom she spent her last few years, D.O.G.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her two children, Jimmy Hughes and fiancée Karen of Roan Mountain; one daughter, Laura Morris of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Brandon Campbell and wife Jessica, Jared Campbell and Jacob Morris of Elizabethton and Summer Hughes of Newport, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Maggie and Molly Campbell of Elizabethton and Gabe of Roan Mountain; four sisters, Patsy Presnell and husband John, Beulah Lunceford, all of Hampton, Carolyn Bishop and June Salts of Michigan; and one brother, Terry Bowers and wife Barbara of Johnson City.     A funeral service to honor the life of Lois V. Bowers Hughes will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 2, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Justin Deaton officating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service and committal will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, September 3, in the Hughes Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Jimmy Hughes, Brandon Campbell, Jared Campbell, Jacob Morris, Randall Hughes and Ian Ford. Honorary pallbearers are Terry Bowers, Allen Morris and Wayne Hughes.

    JOHNSON CITY - John E. Scalf Jr., 68, of Juniper Cottage in Greeneville, died Wednesday at Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greeneville, where he had lived for the past 40 years.
    Mr. Scalf was a native of Washington County who had lived most of his life in Greeneville. He was the son of the late Ruby (Bowers) and the Rev. John E. Scalf Sr.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Fred (Ruby) Dulaney; one nephew: Wayne Dulaney; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
    The family provided the following statement: "John loved attending church at New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church. He also attended Bible study at Greene Valley. He loved listening to gospel music and playing the guitar.
    "John had also enjoyed coming to Johnson City with Vickie Stubblefield and Wayne Hyatt to eat with his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Earl Hammer."
    Additional survivors include: two brothers and their wives: Harold and Shelia Scalf of Watauga and Charles and Tresia Scalf of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; his family members" and "wonderful caregivers" at Greene Valley Developmental Center, whom he loved very much, the family noted.
    The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, 2001 Oakland Avenue in Johnson City.
    The funeral service will follow visitation at 2 o'clock Sunday in the South Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Mike Young will officiate.
    Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park.
    Pallbearers will be Josh Ledford, Wayne Hyatt, Mark Barner, Neal Holt, Steve Inscore, Danny Copas and Justin Elby.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Munir Ahmed, Dr. Devi Deeann, Dr. Marlen Mathiesen, Joyce Daniels, Debbie Bryant, Kay Payne and Dr. Bud Meece.

    Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Hammer, 77, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday April 12, 2022, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital.
    Barbara was born in Johnson City to the late Rev. John E. Scalf and Ruby Bowers Scalf. Mrs. Hammer retired from the American Red Cross after 20 years of service. Barbara was a Certified Medical Assistant and had previously attended ETSU.
    Barbara was a member of By Faith Freewill Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher and a member of the church choir. She was truly a faithful servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
    She enjoyed taking trips with her husband Earl and other family members, cooking for holiday family gatherings, hiking, and taking car rides with Earl. She especially enjoyed their trips to Niagara Falls, Washington DC, and Myrtle Beach, SC.
    Barbara was a devoted wife and mother. She loved her family, loved to laugh, and she was cherished by her family and friends.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Annalee Dulaney and brother in-law Fred Dulaney, brothers John Scalf Jr. and Charles Scalf and sister in-law Teresa; a daughter, Kimberly G. Hammer, two granddaughters Sarah Hammer and Hannah Hammer, as well as several nieces and nephews.
    Survivors include her husband of 61 years Samuel Earl Hammer; her brother Harold Scalf of Watauga, Tn; a daughter Belinda James and son William “Bill” Hammer and wife Scarlet all of Johnson City; her grandchildren Daphny Jones, Thomas Williams, Kristina Adams, Laura Ramsey, Isaac Hammer, and John Ramsey; great-grandchildren Carson Taylor, Kendyl Adams, and Noah Ramsey; and several nieces, nephews and special friend Frances Soffiotto.
    The family of Barbara Hammer will receive friends on Saturday April 16, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Morris Baker Funeral Home with funeral services at 12:00 PM with Pastor Randy English and Reverend Jay Prater officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    A native of Washington County, he was a son of the late John Aaron and Ruby Bell Bowers Scalf.
    Charlie was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran having served during the Vietnam War where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He had worked as a truck driver and was of the Holiness faith.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Danie Kissinger, a brother, John Scalf, Jr., a sister, Ruby Annalee Dulaney, and several half brothers and half sisters. Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Tresia Hensley Scalf, of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Scalf and wife, Taina, Peekskill, NY, and Steven Scalf, of the home; two granddaughters, Kayla and Maria Scalf, Peekskill, NY; a sister, Barbara Hammer and husband, Earl, Johnson City, and a brother, Harold "Dickie" Scalf and wife, Sheila, Watauga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home or at the residence other times. The funeral service for Mr. Scalf will be conducted at 12:30 P.M. Thursday, October 29, 2009, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph "Jody" Coontz officiating.
    Graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #49 Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Bill Hammer, Keith Guinn, David Scalf, Larry Horton, Phillip Coontz, Patrick Sells, and Kyle Moran. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law, Clarence Perry, Earl Hammer, and Jessie Hensley, and special friends, Bill Woodfin, Paul Darnell, and Hector Alicea.
