She was born on May 26, 1927, in Seven Devils, NC, a daughter of the late Clinard Hodges and the late Daisy Yarber Hodges.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband: Floyd Shook; Two Daughters: Norma Jean Shook and Teresa Shook; Five Brothers: Jimmy, Lynn, Bill, Ronald, and Marshall Hodges; Three Sisters: Lola Rupard, Edna Arnett, Pansey Hodges; Two Grandchildren: Larry Wayne Shook and Tina Shook; Great-Grandchild: Cody Lee Arnett; Daughter-In-Law: Martha Shook.

Kat was a member of White Rock Baptist Church. She enjoyed Flowers, Gardening, and Loafering. She enjoyed listening to Country and Gospel Music. She also enjoyed listening to Conway Twitty and Charley Pride.

Kat leaves behind to cherish her memory her Son: Gary (Maxine) Shook of Banner Elk, NC; Son: Larry Shook of Banner Elk, NC; Daughter: Wilma Dean (Billy) Arnett of Union Mills, NC; Sister: Dople Rupard of Banner Elk, NC; Brother: Bobby (Barbara) Hodges of Banner Elk, NC; four Grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren, 13 Great-Great Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Kat Shook were held at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, from Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, with Rev. Lynn Shook and Rev. John McCoury officiating.

The family received friends beginning at 11 a.m. up until the service hour at noon on Tuesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Interment followed the service at White Rock Cemetery.

Dople Hodges Rupard, age 81, of Banner Elk, NC passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1937, in Watauga County, NC, a daughter of the late Arthur Clinard Hodges and the late Daisy Yarber Hodges.

Dople was a member of God's House of Worship. She loved her family and enjoyed reading, sewing, her animals, and working in her flower garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband: Lloyd Edgar Rupard; two Sons: Joe Rupard, Michael Rupard; Granddaughter: Amy Arnett; five Brothers: Marshall Hodges, Ronald Hodges, Jim Hodges, Lynn Hodges, Bill Hodges; four Sisters: Pansy Hodges, Edna Arnett, Lola Rupard and Kat Shook.

Services for Dople Hodges Rupard will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2019, at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the White Rock Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour on Sunday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank her granddaughter, Samantha Knight for the loving care she provided to her "granny," the Nurses and Staff of Hospice of the Blue Ridge and also to Mark and Tammy Eggers.

Clarence A. Winters, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family members on April 21, 2018. He was born May 8, 1927, in Avery County to the late Howard Lindsay Winters and Lula Octava (Oakes) Winters. He was preceded on death by three sons: Clifford Allen, Douglas Arthur, and Marion Alexander, and three brothers, three sisters, and one granddaughter.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 71 years, Melba Jean Barrier Winters of the home; three sons: Marlon Lavon Winters (Rhonda) of Asheboro, Larry D. Winters (Victoria) of Hudson, Keith Eldon Winters of the home, Loree Dawn Stackhouse (Mason) of Panaca, Nev. He is also survived by one brother: Thomas Emmitt Winters of Spruce Pine; and sisters: Carol June Winters Ollis of Morganton, and Delphia Jean Winters of LaFollette, Tenn..

Additional survivors include grandchildren: David Winters (Susan) of Clemson, SC, Jeremy Winters (Andrea) of Statesville, Alicia Robinson (Neil) of Mt. Holly, Lynette Brewer (Aaron) of Mooresville, Paige Stanich of Statesville, Cameron Reed (Shannon) of Lehi, Utah, Krista Patrick (Thomas) of Rogers, Ark., Robert Winters of Millville, Utah, Richard Winters (Savannah) of Eagle Mtn., Utah, Megan Boring (Wade) of Millville, Utah, Michael Winters of Logan, Utah, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather.

At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the United States Navy and served for two and a half years. He retired as a mail carrier of the US Postal Service after 28 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Newton, NC, and an honorary member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

He was a lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in multiple positions of leadership. His passion was genealogy and researching family history, as evidenced by his 18 years of working with the local genealogy library. He has written 18 family history books and helped organize the Genealogy Society of Catawba County, where he served as the co-president and was a co-author of the Catawba County Heritage Book. Clarence loved to talk and share stories of his experiences; stories and sometimes tall tales that were found during his researching of the genealogies of families within this region.

The family will receive family and friends at Jenkins Funeral Home, Startown Road, Newton, NC, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018. The funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Thorneburg Drive, Conover, NC, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Following the service, a private burial service will be held at the family cemetery, the White Pine Cemetery in Newland, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Catawba Regional Hospice.

Roger Odell Oakes, 66, of Roan Mountain, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jack and Cleo Potter Oakes.
Roger was a graduate of Cloudland High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Infantryman Badge: Expert (Rifle). He attended Roan Mountain United Methodist Church. He loved to hunt fish and go camping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lynn Oakes, and a sister, Brenda Banks.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Barbara Hall Oakes; his children, Adam Oakes and Braydin Oakes, both of Roan Mountain, and Devin Oakes, Fort Polk, La.; a granddaughter, Aaliyah Oakes; his sisters, Orah Lee Andrews, Butler, Sandra Henson and Jackie Thomas, both of Roan Mountain; five brothers, Kenneth Oakes, Lenoir, N.C., Larry Oakes, Banner Elk, N.C., Tommy, Terry and Rhudy Oakes, all of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roger Odell Oakes were conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at High Point Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Dennis Millhorn officiating. Graveside services and interment were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, in the Brewer-Oakes Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers were Adam Oakes, Mike Ward, Tommy Oakes, Little Larry Oakes, Jerry Potter, Randy Brinkley, Scott Oakes, Josh Oakes and Jerry Jones. Honorary pallbearers were his many friends at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at High Point Baptist Church. Military Honors were provided by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Ella Louise Fields Trice passed away Tuesday evening, September 7, 2021, following a brief illness.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathie Massee; widow of David Massee, and her son, Bill, Charles W. Trice, Jr., (Kathy). She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Charles W. Trice and their son, Rodney Evan Trice (Regina). She is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Like most mountain women, Louise was a wonderful cook and helped raise a big vegetable garden yearly from which she canned and froze the best things her family ate during the winter. Louise also loved flowers and planted dahlias and lilies every spring and always expected hanging baskets for Mothers Day. Her flowers graced every family grave on decoration each summer in White Pine Cemetery and Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Louise also sewed a great many of Kathies clothes as she grew up. Amazingly, while carrying out all that needed doing taking care of her home and three children, Louise worked thirty years at Glen Raven Mills. For years, she got up early enough to cook a full breakfast, including gravy and biscuits, for her husband and children before leaving to arrive at work at 7:00 in the morning.

She and husband Charles spent many happy winters in retirement in their home in St. Augustine with close friends all around them in the little Caroline Road community there. She enjoyed walking the trails there with Charles and their dog, playing on the beach with their children and grandchildren, and reading endlessly. She was a friend of the Morrison Library here and donated new books as soon as she finished them.

Graveside services for Louise Trice will be on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

ELIZABETHTON - James “Jim” Buchanan, Sr., age 77, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from the Sycamore Sholas Hospital.

Jim was born in Elizabethton to the late Delbert Wesley and Ora Myrtle Dyson Buchanan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ford Buchanan; a son, Tim Buchanan; his sisters, Lola Barrett, Lillian “Dot” Bullock, Lois Braswell and Myrkie Johnson; and one brother, Larry “Junebug” Buchanan.

Jim was the founder and owner of Jim’s Glass and Upholstery, which later changed the name to J&J Uphostery. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was an avid NASCAR fan – his favorite driver being Richard Petty. Jim, along with his wife, Elayne, actually received an award from Richard Petty for “Outstanding Fan Club Members” which was a tremendous honor for Jim.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Cynthia Elayne Buchanan, of the home; four children, Jimmy Buchanan and Tammy Norris and a special son-in-law, Gene Norris, all of Elizabethton, Patty Glover and husband Jamie, of Hampton and Christy Morris and husband John, of Johnson City; ten grandchildren, Kayla, Brandon, Richard, Brittany, Timmy, James, Brooke, Jeremy, Bryston and Cameron; six great grandchildren, a special great grandson, Issiah Norris, Taylor, Hunter, Lucas, Ariana and Kyler; one sister, Loretta Burke; and two brothers, Hubert Buchanan and Richard Burke.

A service to honor the life of James “Jim” Buchanan, Sr. will be conducted at 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 11, 2020 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Kenneth Davis and Pastor Dennis Wilson, officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
