Myra Edwards Sellars went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 20, 2023 just a few days before her 90th Birthday, at Johnson City Medical Center. Myra was born at home in the community of Clear Branch, in Unicoi County, TN. In her favorite days of her childhood, she enjoyed life in the country, including chasing the block Ice Wagon for ice chips, and playing in the creek in the Summer; to the lamplight of evening, and standing barefoot over the heat vent from the oil heater below the bedroom in the Winter. Then in 1940, at 7 years old, her family moved and lived in the town of Erwin, for most all of her life.

Myra is the youngest daughter of the late Tilmon F. Edwards, (Past Assistant Post Master of Erwin); and Kate (Willis) Edwards, (Elementary Teacher in Unicoi County for 40 years.)

Myra was a member of First Baptist Church of Erwin. She is a Graduate of Unicoi County High School, Class of 1951. As a youth she enjoyed playing piano in various churches in town & at home, and also playing French Horn in the High School Marching Band, and Concert Band. She was a member of various clubs in High School, including the Booster Club and Drama Club, where she received the Thespian Award for her accomplishments. She was employed as Secretary at Boyd DeArmond’s Department Store in Erwin and also worked in sales at King’s Department Store in Johnson City. After Graduating UCHS, Myra Edwards married her High School sweetheart, Tom Sellars, at her parent’s home, on May 30th, 1951, becoming a Navy Bride at 18 and living in Key West, FL until 1954. Then, the couple moved back to Erwin, wherein their two children were born. She attended ETSU for further Clerical Secretary training, and worked as an employee of Erwin Utilities, from 1962-1987, where she retired after 25 yrs of service as Secretary & Accounts Receivable, and as the original clerk at the Erwin Utilities innovational Drive Through Window.

Myra was kindhearted and enjoyed spending time with her family during holidays, especially Christmas. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt, to her Family. She loved capturing memories and held a great love for the Beauty of Nature. She enjoyed camping and fishing, especially from nearby Watauga Lake, to the Islands and Bridges of Key Largo, Sugarloaf Key, and Key West, FL. She also enjoyed with her husband & son, a full motorhome site-seeing trip of the United States. While on the Pacific coast, Myra returned to see her WWII family home in San Francisco, CA, with a hilltop view of the Giant Golden Gate Bridge and Bay, where she lived at 11 years old, before her Father was shipped out to sea, into duty in the Philippine Islands. She recalled the sadness of seeing the Naval ships moored in the San Francisco Bay and then by the next day, the ships would have disappeared & were gone; sailed out to sea, under the extended arms of the Golden Gate Bridge. The rest of the family then returned to Erwin to finally rejoice at the return home of their father and husband at the victorious end of WWII. Additionally, the family won the recognition one year of having the most beautiful “Victory Garden” in Erwin.

Myra was also so blessed to be a member of the Very Special "Big 8", a lifelong friendship club since 1940, beginning from early years at Love Street School, through High School Days and later in their Retirement including yearly Springtime trips to Hilton Head Island, enjoying bicycling, swimming, cooking, and making their own handmade crafts. They also enjoyed Apple Festival Reunion Picnics in the Fall, and the delight of their hometown Erwin, returning to the old time feeling of greeting friends and family, from the precious blessed days of our lives.

Myra also loved cooking and cake decorating. She made delicious homemade pickles that delighted the entire neighborhood. But, most of all, she especially loved watching her two Grandsons play Softball, UCHS Football, Track, and Basketball and celebrating their Academic Accomplishments.

In addition to her parents, Myra is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, John Thomas Sellars; sister, Wilda E. Wright; and brother, Willis E. Edwards.

Myra Edwards Sellars has left behind to cherish her memory: Son: Mark Thomas Sellars and Wife Swinie, of Unicoi; Daughter: Myra Anne Sellars, of Erwin; Grandchildren: Matthew Thomas Sellars and Garrett Sellars; and many Nieces, Nephews and Friends.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Myra Edwards Sellars in a funeral service to be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 28 2023, in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 6:00 pm and will continue until service time at Valley Funeral Home. A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 in Roselawn Memory Gardens. Mary Esther Moore, 89, of Arden, died Monday, December 27, 2004.
A native of Unicoi Co., Tenn., she was the daughter of the late C.V. and Jane Ray Treadway. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Warren G. Moore, who died in 2000; her son, Dwight Edwards and a grandson, D.W. Edwards.
Mrs. Moore was a member of Skyland Baptist Church and a retired employee of Gerber.
She is survived by two sisters, two brothers, two granddaughters, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Burial will follow in New Salem Cemetery.

Inez Treadway Metcalf, age 96, of Flag Pond, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Flag Pond and the daughter of the late Carver and Matilda Hardin Treadway.
Inez worked as a painter for Blue Ridge Pottery in her younger years. She retired from Morrill Motors after twenty-six years of service. Inez enjoyed cooking for family, working on the farm and in the Apple Orchard. She was a lifetime member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Zade Metcalf in 2005 and all her brothers and sisters.
Inez was a precious mother to her three daughters: Yuvonda (Howard) Jenkins, Sharon (Roger) Fender, and Debbie (Jerry) Shelton; a loving grandmother to her grandchildren: Joey Jenkins, Janet (Rodney) Jenkins Shelton, Kimberly (Alan) Fender Wyatt, and Kelly (Joey) Shelton Willis; her great grandchildren: Avery, Bailey, Zade, Brooklyn, Emily, and Mason; her honorary grandson, Elijah; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 Pm Friday, April 30, 2021 at the Shady Grove Baptist Church, Flag Pond. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM with Rev. Jerry Shelton, Rev. Danny Jenkins, and Rev. Josh Vestal officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Committal service will follow in the State Line Cemetery.

HULL – John Rufe Treadway, 78, died Sunday, October 18, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Unicoi, Tenn., on June 27, 1931, he was the son of the late Carter Vance and Tilda Hardin Treadway. He was a retired automobile mechanic and also worked for the highway department. He was of the Holiness denomination. Mr. Treadway was preceded in death by six brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Ballew Treadway, Hull; sons, Carver Vance and John W. Treadway; daughters, Eula Mae Blankenship and Elaine Briggs, both of Flag Pond, Tenn., Mary E. Roadenberry, and Shirley Cooper; stepdaughters, Charlotte Evans and Rhonda Knapp, both of Elberton, Lisa Mize, Athens, and Tammy Owens, Commerce; stepsons, Keith Epps, Danielsville, and Kevin Epps, Hoschton; sisters, Evelyn Miller, North Carolina, and Inez Metcalf, Flag Pond, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 20, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. David Strickland and Don Nestor officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Bowman.

Gaye Treadway, 55, of Ridge Cove Road, Enka, N.C. died Friday, March 31, 1989 in Asheville, N.C. Veteran Administration Medical Center.
A native of Unicoi County, Tennessee, he had lived in North Carolina for 20 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a former employee of Beacon Manufacturing Company. He belonged to Shady Grove Baptist Church in Flag Pond, Tennessee and Flag Pond Masonic Lodge No. 408 F&AM.
He was survived by five brothers, Jack and Leonard Treadway of Flag Pond, Tennessee, Rufe Treadway of Athens, Georgia, Charles Treadway of Enka, N.C. and Lewis Treadway of Erwin, Tennessee; and three sisters, Inez Metcalf of Flag Pond, Tennessee, Ester Moore and Evelyn Miller of Arden, N.C.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, 1989 in Ledford Funeral Home chapel in Erwin, Tennesse with the Revs. Jerry Shelton and Jerry Kent officiating. Members of Flag Pond Masonic Lodge # 408 F&AM conducted masonic rites at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 1989 at the funeral home. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin, Tennessee.

Charles Reece Treadway, 63, of 427 Reeves Cove Road, Candler, N.C. died Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at his home.A native of Flag Pond, Tennessee, Mr. Treadway was a son of the late Carver and Matilda Treadway. He will be reunited with his loving wife of 40 years, Ruth, who died in 2006.Mr. Treadway graduated from Unicoi County High School, in Tennessee. He formerly worked at the American Enka Plant, then with Moore's Building Supplies Company for 33 years and more recently with Jenning's Building Supplies Company. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam. He faithfully attended New Morgan Hill Baptist Church. He was formerly active with the Hominy Valley Recreation League for over 20 years.He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and devoted husband. He is survived by his daughter, Lee Anne Tucker and husband, Austin, of Candler, N.C.; sons, Randy Treadway and wife, Toyna, of Paintsville, Kentucky, and Jody Treadway and wife, Lisa,of Candler, N.C.; sisters, Evelyn Miller of Arden, N.C. and Inez Metcalf of Flag Pond, Tennessee; brother, John Rufe Treadway and wife, Marilyn, of Hull, Georgia; amd two grandsons, Tyler and Jake Treadway.The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2008 at New Morgan Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Georgia Lee Willis Radford, age 89, formerly of Erwin, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2019 at the Agape Healthcare Center. She lived most of her life in Unicoi County. Georgia is a daughter of the late Dave and Myrtle Jones Willis.

She was a homemaker. Georgia was of the Baptist Faith. She was a talented musician and enjoyed playing her guitar, banjo and autoharp. Georgia loved making music and singing. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Duncan Effler; husband, Dean Radford; five brothers and seven sisters.

Martha Jeweldine Willis Rice, age 80, went to be with her Lord on April 28, 2021 at the Center of Aging and Health. She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and the daughter of Jasper and Thelma Ray Willis.

Martha was a dedicated Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a faithful member of Flag Pond Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught the Children’s Sunday School Class, and held the office of secretary.

Martha retired from Morrill Motors after forty-one years of service. She was a member of Flag Pond 129 Eastern Star, where she was a worthy matron in 1968.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, David Lee Rice; one grandson, Jacob Mosley; nine brothers, three sisters, three half-brothers, and one half-sister.

UNICOI - Charlotte “Shirley” Phillips Fender, 86, of Unicoi, passed away at her residence on Thursday, May 12, 2022.

Shirley was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County. She was the daughter of the late Vaughn and Mamie Treadway Phillips.

Shirley was a member of Marbleton Free Will Baptist Church. She co-owned R&M Electrics. Shirley loved her little dog, Sugar.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Conley Fender; siblings, Janice Castle, Billy Phillips, Jimmy Phillips, Doyle Phillips, Michael (Bobby) Phillips.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Katherine L. Miller; sister, Joyce Simmons.

The family would like to thank everyone that volunteered their love and support. A special thanks to friends and family for the great care they provided to both Shirley and the family.

ERWIN - Evangeline “Vange” (Treadway) Bailey, age 87 of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. Born in Asheville, NC, and a resident of Erwin all of her life, Vange was a daughter of the late Lewis Treadway and Kate (Phillips) Frye. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was formerly employed as a secretary at Hoover Ball and Roller. She loved reading and being outdoors. In addition to her parents, Vange is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Cecil Jackson Bailey; grandson, Ryan Bogart; son-in-law, Gregg Bogart; brother, Donald Treadway; and nephew, Gregory Buckles.
Vange Bailey has left behind to cherish her memory: daughter: Jo Bogart, of Erwin; sisters: Mary Jo Gilley and husband, Harrison, of Knoxville, and Patricia Buckles, of Matthews, NC; several nieces and nephews; best friend: Patricia Frazier; and special friends: Myra Ann Preston and Bill Ray.

JONESBOROUGH - Joan Byrd King, age 80, Jonesborough, formerly of Erwin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 26, 2021. She was a native of Erwin and a daughter of the late John L. and Velva Willis Byrd. Joan moved to Jonesborough thirty-two years ago.

Joan and her husband, James were co-owners and operators of The Elms Restaurant for more than twenty years. She was a very active member of Canah Chapel Freewill Baptist Church for many years. Joan was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies Fellowship Circle. Over the years, Joan taught Sunday School for various age groups. Joan loved her church and church family.

She loved animals, sewing, crocheting, quilting, canning, cooking, baking, gardening and tending flowers. Joan was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by two brothers: J.L. and Kyle Byrd; two sisters: Robbie and Doris Byrd.

Survivors include her husband of sixty years, James King; one son, Jeffrey King (Victoria), Erwin; one granddaughter, Joy King; two grandsons: Riley and E.J. White; one brother, Harold Byrd (Mae Bell), Flag Pond; two sisters: Olga Edwards and Bertha Byrd, both of Erwin; brothers-in-law: Alvin King (Jody) and Gary King (Robin); sister-in-law, Diana Byrd; many special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly also survive.

The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00 P.M. on Monday, August 30, 2021, in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Mark Simmons and Joan’s nephew, Reverend Charles D. Byrd will officiate the 1:00 P.M. service. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family and members of Canah Chapel Freewill Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders of the church.

Charles Cyle Byrd, 73, Jonesborough, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2018, at his home while he was surrounded by his family. He was a native of Erwin and graduated from Unicoi County High School in 1963. Cyle is a son of the late John Lawrence Byrd, Sr. and Velva Willis Byrd. He moved to Jonesborough in 1984.

Cyle retired from Hoover Ball in 2007 after thirty-four years of service.

He loved to fish, hunt, farm, “tinker around” in his shed and spend time with his family. Cyle was a gentle, caring man who would help anyone he could.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Lawrence Byrd, Jr. “J.L.” and one sister, Robbie M. Byrd.

Cyle left behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of over fifty-one years, Diana Byrd; three sons: David Byrd and wife, Anneta, Daniel Byrd, all of Johnson City and Matthew Byrd, Jonesborough; two daughters: Wendy Tesnear and husband, Duane, Limestone, Michelle Broyles and husband, Daniel, Jonesborough; one brother, Harold Byrd and wife, Mae Bell, Flag Pond; four sisters: Bertha Byrd, Erwin, Joan King and husband, James, Jonesborough, Olga Edwards and Dorris Byrd, both of Erwin; seven grandchildren: Samantha, Jessica, Kayla and husband, Joshua, Kelsey, Shaylan, Heather and Cooper; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Dorris Byrd, age 69, Erwin, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at her home. She was a life-long resident of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late John Lawrence Byrd, Sr, and Velva Willis Byrd.

Dorris retired from NFS after twenty plus years of service. In her younger years she enjoyed playing softball. She loved cooking, gardening, and fishing. Dorris was a Christian and formerly attended Clear Branch Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: John “J.L.” Lawrence Byrd, Jr and Charles Cyle Byrd; one sister, Robbie Byrd.

Dorris leaves behind to cherish her memory, one brother, Harold Byrd and wife, Mae Bell of Flag Pond; three sisters: Bertha Byrd and Olga Edwards both of Erwin, and Joan King and husband, James of Jonesborough; several special nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Tuesday March 23, 2021 in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM. Reverend Charles David Byrd and Reverend Craig Shelton will officiate. Music will be provided by Courtney Harris. Pallbearers will be Harold Byrd, Daniel Byrd, Matt Byrd, Tim Byrd, John Byrd, and TK Sallings. Emma Lee Shelton was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She left this world on March 19, 2021, at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Emma Lee often said she had a great life filled with love and treasured experiences. She was a 1982 ETSU graduate as a Dental Lab Technologist. This career was fitting for her as it allowed her to aid others see the beauty in themselves. She enjoyed camping, traveling, decorating and most of all spending time making memories with her family.

She is survived and cherished by the love of her life Wendell L. Shelton Sr., husband for over 55 years; son, Wendell L. Shelton Jr. and wife Janet; son; Michael S. Shelton and wife Nikki; grandchildren, Rebecca, Clay, Gabriella, Bayleigh, Justin and Ben; great grandchildren, Kaylyn and Gavin; siblings, Irene Harshbarger, Clarence Willis, Judy Elswick, Jerry Willis, Gary Willis, Darlene Davis, Roy Michael Willis, Nina Kay Corn and Debbie Davis.

She was preceded in death by her parents David F. and Estelle Willis; brother, Jack Willis and granddaughter, Gracie Shelton.

Judy Ann Williams was born May 28, 1952 the daughter of Clifford and Pauline Blankenship Willis. She was married to Broyate Royal Willims and had one son Broyate Royal Williams Jr.

Judy was a beautiful, caring and giving lady who was loved by all who knew her. She and her husband attended Roseville Baptist Church until she was no longer able to attend.

Judy had heart and lung problems at an early age. It progressed to where she was scheduled to have a heart and lung transplant at Vanderbilt University by Dr. William (Bill) Frisk in 1988. This was the first heart/lung transplant performed at Vanderbilt. Judy was able to come home and spent time with her family. She cane to visit Katheryn and I on one of her trips home. Judy live about two years after the transplant.

It has been twenty five years and I still think of her quite often. She now has a daughter in law and three grandchildren.

Sadly at the age of 37 God called Judy home where she would never suffer again.

JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Fred B. Huskins, 82, of Johnson City, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2021, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Fred was a resident of Johnson City. He was the son of the late Woodward and Verna Huskins.

Fred was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was a US Army veteran, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Fred retired with forty years of service as an Equipment Supervisor with Summers Taylor. He was an avid Wood Turner, and after he retired, he taught Wood Turning at WoodCraft. One of the prized pieces he made was that of a guitar that he and his son worked on together.

Fred was a race fan as well as a UT VOLS fan of all sports. He was a Mason with the Johnson City Lodge # 486.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his son, David Huskins.

Survivors include his wife of thirty-five years, Geraldine “Jeri” Huskins; children, Kathy Huskins and her husband Michael Sawchuk, Dan McClaskey and his wife Tina, Doug McClaskey and Diane McClaskey; one brother, Dennis Huskins and his wife Carol; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and two nephews.

The family of Fred B. Huskins will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Tetrick Funeral Services. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 9 am Sunday, in the Washington County Memory Gardens with Rev. Dwight Hobbs officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dick McClaskey, the Wood Turning Breakfast Crew, Jerry and Beverly Lovegrove, Richard Dwyer, Harold and Judy Pannell and Dwight Hobbs. The Johnson City VFW Post # 2108 will accord military honors.

ERWIN - Heidi C. Willis Smith, age 38, Erwin, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 3, 2021 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Erwin.

Heidi was a Manager at Food City. She was a member of Coffee Ridge Baptist Church.

Heidi loved people and she never met a stranger. She was feisty and enjoyed joking around with others, especially with her cousin, Chad. Heidi experienced many exciting adventures during her trips with family and friends. She always loved going to the beach. Heidi never missed an opportunity to shop for clothes, make-up or hair products. She absolutely hated to water flowers! Heidi liked collecting items with pictures of cherries on them. In her spare time, she liked to lounge around and be pampered like a princess.

On December 22, 2018 Heidi had her first date with Michael, who became her husband and the love of her life. She loved Michael and her boys with all her heart.

Heidi was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert R. Foster on January 26, 2019; paternal grandparents, Clifford Sr. and Pauline Willis; special aunt, Judy Williams.

Heidi leaves behind to cherish many special memories of her, husband, Michael Smith; her four boys: Jacob A. Smith, Michael A. Smith, Isaiah J. Smith and Isaac W. Smith; parents, Sherry Foster Gaddy (Roger); paternal grandmother, Frances “Nanny” Foster; father, Clifford Willis, Jr. (Mary); sister, Jessica Swope (Will); nephew and light of “Dee-Dee’s” life, Liam Swope; four aunt’s: Teresa “Teecee” Williams (Bud), Mary Gail Crawford (Jimmy), Carolyn Sparks (Johnny) and Alma Honeycutt; three uncles: Greg Willis (Cindy), Broyate Williams, David Gaddy (Debbie); very close cousins: Chad, Savannah, Wayne, Heather, Chloe, Corbin, Brett, Caleb and many other special cousins also survive.
