James Harley “Jim” Cannon Jr., 86, Elizabethton, passed away November 21, 2022 at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. He was born February 15, 1936 in Heaton, N.C., to the late Harley and Oma Winters Cannon. He had lived in Carter County most of his life.
James served in the National Guard for four years. He was a retired construction superintendent for several local construction companies.
James was Santa Clause at local nursing homes and family holiday gatherings during the ’80s and ’90s. He was a well-known artisan in building guns for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Braswell Cole; a brother, William “Bill” Cannon; his former wife, Charlotte Davis Cannon, and their son, Gregory Wayne Cannon.
Survivors include his children, Kathryn Evans, Elizabethton, Karen and husband Gary Shipley, Elizabethton, Steve Cannon, Elizabethton, Tony and wife Sherrie Cannon, Jonesborough, and Robert and wife Lisa Cannon, Greensboro, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his sister, Ruth and husband Trond Shepard, Elizabethton; and his sister-in-law, JoAnn Cannon, Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 18, in the Ensor Cemetery. Music will be provided by Dale Williams.

Thelma married Elmer Tyler Braswell on 17 Dec 1965 in Scott County, , , Virginia. Elmer (son of James McKinley Braswell and Myrtle H. Hyder) was born on 9 Sep 1936 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 6 Feb 1999 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Hyder Cemetery, , Carter County, Tennessee. Ricky Eugene Braswell, 62, of 215 E. Mill Street, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at his residence following an extended illness. Rick was born in Carter County to the late Thelma Cannon Braswell and Zebby Gene Braswell. After graduating from Elizabethton High School in 1979, he attended East Tennessee State University majoring in Engineering. In 1981 he married the love of his life, Marcia Montgomery Braswell, and had three children, Jennifer Braswell, Jason Braswell and Nathaniel “Blake” Braswell. Rick was a Journeyman Carpenter and Superintendent/Estimator for several large construction firms. He was of the Baptist faith. Rick enjoyed spending time with his grandson Noah and his family and NASCAR racing and golfing. In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Oma Cannon and James and Myrtle Braswell; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and mother-in-law, Bonnie Montgomery. Those left to cherish his memory include wife, Marcia Braswell; daughter, Jennifer; sons, Jason and Blake; grandson, Noah Braswell; sisters, Teresa Cochran, Tina Wyatt, and sister and family Lisa, Ronny and Taylor Byars; sister-in-law, Tami Peters and family, John, Haley, Laurel and River; as well as several special cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Rick’s residence on Sunday, May 7, from 2 until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the family to help with expenses.
