ELIZABETHTON — It is with God's peace that we announce the soul of Ralph Howard Fletcher, 86, of Elizabethton, went to join his Lord on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, with his family by his side.

Mr. Fletcher was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Andrew J. and Mary Nave Fletcher. In addition to his parents, Ralph has now joined his three brothers and two sisters in heaven.

He was a 1942 graduate of Unaka High School, worked for 23 years and retired from ITT Corporation.

Ralph was known for his faithfulness and the loyalty he gave not only to his family but also extended to his friends and business associates.

Mr. Fletcher belonged to the following organizations: Member and Past Master of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #622, Past High Priest of R.D. Keller Chapter #214, Past Illustrious Master of B.E. Wooten Council #119 and Carter Commandery #37, Charter Member of Jericho Shrine Temple, 32nd Degree of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Knoxville, Past President of Upper East Tennessee York Rite Association, Illustrious Grand Master of Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of Tennessee, Member of Knight Cross of Honor, received Order of the Purple Cross, Member and Past Worthy Patron of Sycamore Chapter #163 Order of Eastern Star and member of Grand Chapter of Tennessee Order of Eastern Star, Member and Past Governor of North East Tennessee York Rite College #153, Member Red Cross of Constantine and The Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest.

He was also a member and former Deacon of Oak Street Baptist Church.

Ralph leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 63 years, Virginia Davis Fletcher; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Joe Reed, one granddaughter, Dena Michelle Richardson, all of Daytona Beach, Florida; two special nieces and caretakers, Angela Richardson and Diana Wright, both of Elizabethton. Several other nieces and nephews survive.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating.

Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be Roscoe Peters, Carroll Mick, Foye Manning, Frank Richardson, Franklin Wright, Dylan Wright, Thomas Tester and Will Andrews. Honorary Pallbearers will be His Nieces & Nephews, His Church Family and all the Masonic Bodies. Masonic Honors will be provided by Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238.

ELIZABETHTON — Ruth M. Wilson, 85, Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Ora & Sallie Buckles Nave. Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker and a former Cook at Unaka High School. She loved cooking for her family and working in her flowers. She was a member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ora Dale Wilson; three brothers, Snyder, Ray & Arthur Nave; and three sisters, Ailene Nave, Juanita Fair; an infant sister; and Rosa.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Conway "JC" Wilson; her children, Kennetha Marshall, Johnson City and Gary (Sharon) Wilson, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Kimberly Buck, Ericka Marshall and Kasey Duncan; three great grandchildren, Chase Buck, Kaelyn Duncan and Keaton Duncan; one sister, Phyllis Gouge, Johnson City; several nieces & nephews; special "sister" Geraldine Grindstaff; and special "cousin" Charlotte Farrington.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Entombment Services will be conducted in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be: Keith Lyons, Fonz Cecil, Montie Lyons, Chase Buck, Steve Lowe, Matt McCamy, Alex Carr and Chuck Milam. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Raymond Jenkins and Tim Robey.

JOHNSON CITY - Phyllis Marie Gouge, age 85, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord on Monday, November 1, 2021 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Phyllis was born in Carter County to the late Ora Gay Nave and Sarah Buckles Nave. In addition to her parents, Phyllis was also preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
To know her was to know love, compassion, and the most tender heart. She was without a doubt the sweetest, most precious soul we have ever known and had a smile that would light up a room. She closed her eyes on her earthly home and opened her eyes to see the face of GOD in her eternal home. Although she will be terribly missed, we have comfort in knowing she is at rest and at the feet of Jesus.
Phyllis retired from Johnson City Medical Center as a dietary aide and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She loved to sing in the choir, shopping, going out to eat, reading her bible, and crocheting in her younger years.
Those left to cherish Phyllis’s memories include her husband of sixty-nine years, Kyle Gouge of the home; three children, Debbie Teague, Lois Hyder (Clifford) and Jeffrey Gouge; her grandchildren, Melanie Williams, Michele Robitaille (Mike), Ronnie Wilson and Amy Henegar; her great grandchildren, Mason Williams, Caitlyn Wilson, Chandler Williams, Adrienne Henegar, Marcus Robitaille, Ethan Robitaille, Autumn Henegar, Cassidy Wilson and Kelsie Robitaille. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Phyllis Marie Gouge will be conducted at 11:30 AM on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. There will be an open visitation from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM on Thursday prior to the service.
The graveside service will follow in the Wilson Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Clifford Hyder, Ronnie Wilson, Mike Robitaille, Mason Williams, Chandler Williams and Jason Eggers. Honorary pallbearers will be Marcus Robitaille and Ethan Robitaille.

Ralph leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 63 years, Virginia Davis Fletcher; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Joe Reed, one granddaughter, Dena Michelle Richardson, all of Daytona Beach, Florida; two special nieces and caretakers, Angela Richardson and Diana Wright, both of Elizabethton. Several other nieces and nephews survive.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating.

Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. MEADOWVIEW, Va. - Vern Williams, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his residence.
He was born in Carter County, Tenn., and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus and loved his Sunday school class very much.
He served his country proudly and with honor in the U. S. Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he was a featherweight boxing champion. He was a retired fitter welder with Bristol Metals. While employed there, he was very instrumental with the construction of the Bristol Va./Tenn. sign on State Street.
He was a farmer who loved to garden and enjoyed going to the farmer's market. He was an avid reader who enjoyed reading Appalachian history. He also loved his faithful Labrador Retriever, Foxxy.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Nannie L. Williams; 2 sisters; and 11 brothers.
He is survived by his son, Vernie Williams and wife Sue of Meadowview; four daughters, Jane Day and husband Randall of Sparta, Tenn., Donna Fuller and husband Jimmy of Damascus, Suzanne McGlocklin of Bristol, Va., and Kim Parks of Bristol, Va.; one brother, Lester Williams of Londonberry, N.H.; one sister, Pauline Richardson of Grand Prairie, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 26, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, with Pastor David Matlock officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The committal service will be conducted Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastor Wayne Guinn officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veteran's Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the First Baptist Church men's Sunday school class.

Reba Peters, age 93, of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 30, 2015 in the Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Judson and Maggie Hyder Nave. Reba was a homemaker and she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Elizabethton. During the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's she would taxi children to school. She loved her family and everyone called her "Big Granny". Reba also loved to take rides in the mountains and working puzzles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estel Peters; a son, Ricky Peters; a brother, Harry Nave and a very special aunt who raised her, Lizzie Nave.

Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Davis and husband Lawrence; Johnson City; Peggy Moore, Elizabethton and Betty Frazier and husband Wes, Elizabethton; two sons, C. J. Peters and wife Debbie, Elizabethton and Darrell Peters and wife Lynda, Johnson City; twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and a special sister-in-law, Verlee Peters, Elizabethton also survive.

A service to honor the life of Reba Peters will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, October 3, 2015 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Joe Sorah officiating. Music will be under the direction of Teresa Sorah. Harry Thurman Nave, 79, 1009 DeJarnette Street, Elizabethton, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Mr. Nave was a retired Elizabethton Chief of Police. Prior to his employment at the police department, he was employed at Pet Dairy. Mr. Nave was hired by the police department in December 1962 and was appointed chief of police in 1976. He retired from the police department in 1984. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #622. Mr. Nave was a member, deacon and choir member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dreama Nave. He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Proffitt Nave; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Brenda Nave, Jasper, Ga.; three grandchildren, Tajai Kuhn, Nicki Nave and Natalie Ricci; three great-grandchildren, Stephen, Megan and Kaitlyn; and a sister, Reba Peters, Elizabethton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Sorah officiating. JOHNSON CITY - J.N. Buckles, age 94, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be the Lord on Thursday, October 24, 2019 from Agape Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.


J.N. was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Alfred and Abbygail Nave Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lee Nave Buckles; his brothers, Harry Buckles, Eston Buckles, Tommy Buckles and Brown Buckles; and his sisters, Vera Buckles, Ella Buckles and Kate Buckles Williams.

J.N. retired as a Lieutenant with the Tennessee State Police, following 33 years of service. He was a private man and very dedicated to Public Service. J.N. was of the Baptist faith and was a United States Marine veteran, having served during World War II. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Johnson City Masonic Lodge No. 486. J.N. was a member of York Rite of Johnson City and of the Scottish Rite, of Knoxville and was a founding member of Jericho Shrine, member of National Troopers Association and a member of Tennessee Retired Officers Association. He also enjoyed watching U.T. games and growing up on the family farm.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Gail Buckles, of Elizabethton, TN and Debbie Harrison (Steve Eischen- fiancé), of Johnson City, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of J.N. Buckles will be conducted at 7:00 Pm on Saturday, October 26, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Dr. William Duncan, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday or at the residence of either daughter, at other times. Masonic Rites will be accorded after the service. The Tennessee Honor Guard will assist in the service.

Kate B. Williams, age 72, 129 Harry Buckles Road, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday afternoon, April 6, 2004, following a brief illness.
A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Abbagail Nave Buckles.
Mrs. Williams was a 1948 graduate of Unaka High School.
She and her husband Jones Williams were married on April 7, 1950 and were married for a total of 54 years.
She was a member of the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, the WMU of Caldwell Springs Baptist and had taught Sunday school in her church for more than 40 years.
She was a floral designer and was retired as the former co-owner and operator of City Floral Shop.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ella and Vera Buckles; four brothers, Brown, Thomas, Eston and Harry Buckles.
She is survived by her husband, Jones Williams of the VA Nursing Home, Johnson City; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael K and Tonie Berry Williams, of Elizabethton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Garry Holly and Julie and Bill Tetrick, all of Elizabethton, a very special niece, Gail Buckles of Elizabethton; one brother, J.N. Mildred "Ruby" Bowers passed away quietly January 3rd, 2016 at the age of 93. Ruby was the daughter of William McKinley and Laura Elizabeth Nave of Carter County and is a direct descendant of Teter Nave, a 1778 settler of Carter County.

On the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Ruby married Floyd H. Bowers. He preceded her in death after 63 years of marriage. They were devoted to each other and she looks forward to seeing him again after crossing over Jordan.

During her years as the wife of an Air Force officer, she was a volunteer with Family Services assisting families of soldiers in need. Always willing to assist others, she continued her post-military community service becoming active in her church, First Baptist of Elizabethton, along with various veteran's and community service organizations including Disabled American Veterans, Eastern Star, American Red Cross and American Legion.

Ruby loved a good joke and could take as well as she gave. No doubt that she this very minute is sitting with St. Peter swapping jokes and telling tales. Her sense of humor never failed her and no one who met Ruby could walk away without a smile.

Ruby was preceded in death by her brothers Earl and Luther Nave, sister Edith, and son Michael Robert Bowers. She is survived by her sister Ella Ruth Perry, sons Edward and Ernest Bowers along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Included in these are Michael Bowers, Ruth Csanady, Cody Anderson, Melvin Nave, Peggy Shell, Thomas Perry, Kim Miller, Karen Perry, Diane Deal and Doris Carrier.

The service to honor the life of Mrs. Bowers will be conducted January 5, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Edward Bowers, her son, eulogist, and Mr. Michael T. Bowers, her grandson who will also deliver a eulogy. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service.

Ella Ruth Nave Perry was born July 15, 1932 to Laura Nidiffer Nave and William McKinley Nave. She was a lifelong Carter County resident, spending her early years in Nave Hollow, growing up with two brothers and one sister. Another sister died as a young child before Ella Ruth was born. She attended Unaka schools, including Unaka High School where she played basketball.
In the late 1940s her sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Floyd Bowers, lived next door to Ike and Martha Perry. Their son, Dean Perry, had recently returned from WWII. Dean and Ella Ruth met, “courted,” fell in love, and were married November 10, 1951.
Ella Ruth worked at Raytheon in administration and later as the family grew, became a stay at home mom. She eventually attended ETSU and received her Bachelor’s degree in education. She taught kindergarten in Elizabethton City Schools for 27 years, the majority of those at West Side Elementary School. She was a beloved teacher and numerous students were blessed to be in her class. At one time, she even taught two of her grandchildren.
In the 1970s Dean was the mayor and Ella Ruth was the first lady of Elizabethton.
She enjoyed playing hymns on the piano and singing “The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was a warm place for family to gather, and there was always something delicious to eat. Her specialties were fried chicken, vegetable beef soup, homemade biscuits, sausage gravy, and most importantly homemade candy.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, the Elizabethton Women’s Club, the VFW Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Carter County Republican Party.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, and her husband.
She is survived by her children, Thomas Perry (Robbi), Karen Perry, and Kim Miller (Mike); seven grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Presnell (Amanda), Ian Perry (Deanna Barton-Perry), Katie Dugger (Dustin), Isaac Miller, Erin Perry, Lauren Miller, and Thomas Miller; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Nave was a siding salesman and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a Free Will Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Larry Nave, Elizabethton; a sister, Mossie Bowers, Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Chastity Miller, Hampton; and four grandsons, Dustin Nave and Joey Nave, both of Elizabethton, Gary Nave, Cross City, Fla., and Johnny Nave, Chattanooga. of Lynn Avenue, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Johnson City Medical
Center following a brief illness.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late William
"Bill" David and Laura Bowers Nave, and was married to the late Clyde
Bowers. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ray Nave.
Mrs. Bowers was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce A. Kelley, Johnson City; one son
and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Frances Bowers, Elizabethton; one
granddaughter and spouse, Joy Kelley Snyder and David Snyder, Johnson
City; two grandsons and spouse, David Bowers and Jerry and Michelle
Bowers, all of Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Bowers,
Elizabethton, and Dreama Barnett, Johnson City; four great-grandsons,
Michael Miller and Nicholas Mills, both of Johnson City, Samuel Bowers
and Daniel Bowers, both of Elizabethton; and one nephew, Larry Nave.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, May 14, in the
Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with the Rev.
Dean Presnell officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral
home chapel from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, prior to the funeral service.
Friends may call at the residence of her son, Darrell Bowers, 745 Dugger
Road, Elizabethton, any time. The graveside service and interment will
be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at Pearl Bowers Cemetery.

Horace Arnold "Hoss" Broome, Jr., age 92, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 04, 2015 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, surrounded by his family. Horace was born in Roda, Virginia to the late Horace Arnold Broome and Cora Lee Nave Broome. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Whitney Shea Broome; and a brother, Bob Broome.

Horace founded Broome Real Estate in 1959, which is the longest, active Real Estate firm in Elizabethton. He was the first President of the Elizabethton Board of Realtors and the past President of East Tennessee Board of Realtors. He was the managing broker for FHA in East Tennessee for 25 years and was instrumental in the zoning for the City of Elizabethton during the years of 1969-1970. He was a member of the Toastmasters, a member of Capt. Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166, the American Legion Watauga Post #49, the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, the Shriners and Masons. He designed and held the patent on the 10-E-C Tag Logo. He was a member of Elizabethton High School and Milligan College football teams. He was an avid Elizabethton High School and University of Tennessee football fan, Peyton Manning and Jason Whitten, were his favorites. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, but had served as a Deacon for many years at Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in both World War II and the Korean Confict. He enjoyed his comradery with "The Lingerfelt Pharmacy Boys." He loved gardening, was an avid fisherman, hunter and was affectionately known as the "Catfish man of Watauga Lake." Hoss set a fashion trend with his bibbed overalls.

Those left to cherish his memory, include his wife of 68 years, Grace Lee Hopson Broome, of the home; two sons, Horace Arnold "Bubba" Broome, III and Rick Lee Broome and wife Teresa; one daughter, Tana Star Johnson and husband Mike; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Danielle Broome; and two brothers, William "Bill" Broome and Carroll Broome. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Horace Arnold "Hoss" Broome, Jr. will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Garry Edwards. Special comments will be provided by Dr. John Martin. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior the service on Tuesday.

ELIZABETHTON - Carroll L. Broome, age 87, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, July 27, 2018 at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Elizabethton, he was a son of the late Horace Arnold and Cora Nave Broome. Carroll was a 1948 graduate of Elizabethton High School and graduated from East TN State University. He retired as a Vice-President with Citizen's Bank. Carroll was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a very active member of First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton where he had served as a member of the Administrative Board and was a past Sunday School teacher. Carroll served as a member of the Elizabethton School Board; had been a member of the Civitan Club of Elizabethton and the Betsy Squares (square dancing). He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting and loved to be around people. He was also a University of TN football fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Garrison Broome; sons, James Lavan Broome and David Brian Broome, an infant grandson, Austin James Frazier; Brothers, Horace Broome Jr. and Bob Broome; sisters-in-law, Grace Broome, Margaret Broome and Dixie Broome and nephews, Horace "Bubba" Broome III and Al Broome and his beloved dog, Millie. Those left to cherish him memory include a daughter, Linda Crowe, Elizabethton; step-daughter, Jama Frazier and husband Jim, Elizabethton; a brother, Bill Broome, Elizabethton; special caregivers, Trish Mayo, Eugene Carrier and Shannon Carrier and former caregivers, Linda, Debbie, Brenda and Denise. ELIZABETHTON - Blonnie M. Estep, 92, Elizabethton passed away Tuesday May 7, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late George & Pearl Nave Estep. Blonnie was a retired Telephone Operator with United Telephone. She was a member of East River Park Christian Church. She loved listening to music. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother: Collins Estep and sisters: Moilee Garrison, Kate White, Maxie Shipley, Virginia Estep and June Greene.

Survivors include her sisters: Billie Dean Estep Long, South Bend, Indiana and Mary Lou Hajducsek, Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews. Her fury friend. Barney.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Jason Payne, Minister and Mr. Justin Stauffer officiating. Loyd W. McEwen, age 90, of North Church St, Mountain City, passed away the evening of Friday December 16, 2022 at his home. Loyd was born September 12, 1932 to the late Walsy G. McEwen and Willa G. Nave McEwen in Johnson County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Lee Johnson McEwen; sister, Jewel “Sis” Lewis; brothers, Mark McEwen and Hiram McEwen.

Loyd was a graduate of Johnson County High School and East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and participated in numerous submarine dives, including one the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine the USS Nautilus.

Loyd W. McEwen was hired with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1960s. During his tenure, he held the roles of a Consumer Safety Officer/Inspector in the States of Ohio and North Carolina and Supervisory Consumer Safety Officer/Direct First Line Supervisor in the State of Virginia. It was in 1976 when Loyd applied and was selected as FDA's first ever Direct First Line Supervisor to be stationed at the FDA Richmond, VA Resident Post. As such, he was instrumental in strengthening cooperative Federal State Relations, particularly with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) and Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Loyd was an outstanding supervisor that went above and beyond in caring for the mission of the agency and his employees. Loyd strongly believed in training and providing detailed guidance to the employees he hired and supervised. He made sure that the employees understood what having a balanced work life meant with family even though he would work you greater than 8 hours. Loyd had high expectations of his employees and would do anything for anyone that he worked with for career development.

In 1993, Loyd was honored to receive the FDA Award of Merit, the agency's highest form of personal recognition. He earned this award for always going above and beyond as a Direct First Line Supervisor and cherished it until his retirement in Jan. 1999.

When he was able he enjoyed growing a garden. Loyd spent a lot of time talking to people and especially his North Church St. Mountain City, TN friends and neighbors.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Tonda McEwen (Adam) and Susan Johnson (Clyde); grandchildren, Shelby Hayes, April Hayes, Jamie Hayes and Willa Campen; sisters-in-law; Amelia McEwen, Jean McEwen and Carolyn Adams; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Haggard, James, and Charles McEwen; special caregivers, Marie, Tammy, Jeraldine (of Richmond) , the late Dora Adamsand many others past and present.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Daniel Jones officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral from Reece Memorial Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Mark McEwen, age 85, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 6, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He was born May 8, 1934 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walsy McEwen and Willa Nave McEwen. In addition to his parents Mark was preceded in death by a brother, Hiram McEwen.

Mark loved his family, especially his six children, the grandchildren and great grandchild and will be truly missed by all. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life. Farming was his life and he looked forward to each day.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee.

NEWPORT – Roy Daniel Nave, 80, Newport, TN was ushered into the presence of the Savior he loved on November 18, 2015.

He was born in Doeville, Tennessee to the late Nick & Anna Opal Stalcup Nave on December 25, 1934. The family moved from Tennessee to Oregon in 1947, and then to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1950, where he lived until May 2015. He was a 1953 Graduate of Mishawaka High School and a lifelong employee of Ball Band, until his retirement in 1990. He married Marilyn Patricia (Pat) Scott on October 30, 1954, faithfully serving her as godly husband and care giver for 61 years.

Roy placed his faith in Jesus Christ in 1957, and lived as a man of God. He was loved and respected by people in Indiana, Tennessee and in Texas, where he & Pat wintered for 17 seasons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Myretha Arnold.

He is survived by his loving wife Pat and son: Daniel (Cheryl) Nave of Newport, TN; Granddaughters: Andrea (Dave)Johnson of Grand Rapids, MI; Sara (Jon)Fisher of Hopkinsville, KY; grandson: Matthew (Carrie) Nave of Howard City, MI: sister: Nikkie Mae (Chuck) Buck of Mishawaka, Indiana, a sister-in-law: Mary Lou (Kenny) Myers of Niles, MI; eight great grandchildren he loved intensely; his friend of 30 years, Larry (Candy) Desimone of Osceola; and Texas snowbird friend, Steve (Irene) Hauersperger of Cerro Gordo, IL.

JOHNSON CITY - Peggy Ann Hughes, age 90, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord on Monday, October 4, 2021 at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton surrounded by her loving family. Peggy was born in Elizabethton to the late Henry Eugene Nave and Hattie Mae Gouge Nave. In addition to her parents, Peggy was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert William “Bill” Hughes; her sister, Hildred LaPorte; and two brothers, Leslie H. Nave and Harry K. Nave.Peggy had worked at Massengills of Johnson City and was a member of First Christian Church of Johnson City. She was a former member of the Johnson City Women’s Club, a former member of the Tuesday Bridge Club and was called to substitute for many differed bridge groups. Peggy loved to play bridge and did so well into her late 80s (almost 90) and was considered to be a very good player! She also enjoyed UT football games with her husband in their UT van, sewing in her younger years and Gatlinburg trips with her husband.

PINEY FLATS - Nila Ruth Fletcher Tinker, 89, Piney Flats, died Monday, November 18, 2019, at her residence, following an extended illness.

Ruth was a member of Edgefield United Methodist Church.

It is with great grief that we mourn the departure of a precious, very much-loved Daddy, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Brother in love, and Friend, Russell Peters, who, at 85, finished his earthly journey and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. We are devastated by his loss, but we remain with the spiritual values he instilled in us and will forever cherish every day that we had as his beloved family, forever grateful to God for this precious gift. He was the son of the late Clarence M. and Dora Fletcher Peters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and their spouses: Jack and Helen Fletcher, Bynum and Lena Peters, and Willard and Joan Peters. Russell was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and had done various church work over the years. He was a veteran, having served in the National Guard and Army Reserve. Most of his work years were with East Tennessee Chair Company as a band saw operator, who took pride and care in his part of producing beautiful pieces for various chairs. He also worked at NAR and then retired from Blue Ridge Fabricators. He was still an avid go-getter and worked hard, putting his family first with his remaining abilities up to the two weeks preceding his departure. He was at one time an avid gardener, fisherman, hunter-gatherer, wood artist, and enjoyed the mountains and beauty of God’s creation. Those left to cherish his memories and legacy are his beloved, devoted wife of 55 years, Bonnie Peters and cherished daughter, Jill Peters, along with her significant other Tom Davis, two beloved brothers, Norman Peters, Roscoe and Lynetta Peters, two beloved sisters Joyce Grindstaff and Jeanette Bowers, two Brothers and three sisters in love, Charlie(Tom) and Linda Williams, Marvin Williams, Cora Beaumont, and Brenda Riddle, along with treasured nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, as well as many spiritual brothers and sisters. An open visitation for Russell will be held Monday, May 22, 2023, between the hours of 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The graveside service and committal will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, in the Wilson Cemetery with Dr. Kenneth Jordan officiating. Pallbearers are Eric Grindstaff, Capt. Willard Peters, 81, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Monday, July 5, 2021, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. He was born on January 19, 1940 to the late Clarence Millard Peters and Dora Belle Fletcher Peters.
Willard was employed by Summers-Taylor, where he retired. He was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. Willard was loved by everyone that had the joy of knowing him. He will be terribly missed by many. After he retired, Willard went back to get his GED. He also served as a volunteer firefighter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Joann F. Peters; an infant sister; his brothers, Jack Fletcher and wife Helen and Bynum Peters and wife Lena; and his brother-in-law, Landon Grindstaff.
Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Wendy Peters of Elizabethton; a step-son and step-daughter, whom he considered his own, Steve Williams and Linda Birchfield, both of Elizabethton; three granddaughters, Cindy James of Elizabethton, Whitney Vines of Kingsport and Lakisha Vines of Knoxville; two great-granddaughters, Caytlin James and Lakyn James, both of Elizabethton; his brothers, Russell Peters and wife Bonnie, Roscoe Peters and wife Lynetta and Norman Peters, all of Elizabethton; and his sisters, Joyce Grindstaff and Jeanette Bowers, both of Elizabethton. Born September 15, 1935 in Elizabethton to the late Bill & Ailene Nave Hopson. She was a graduate of Unaka High School. Mrs. Hodge was a Certified Nursing Assistant. She retired from Hermitage Nursing Home in 1994. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years Hubert Glenn Hodge and a brother: Arlin Hopson.

Survivors include her children: Steven Hodge (Patty), Elizabethton, Janet Taylor (John) _, Hood River, Oregon and Brian Hodge, Bluff City. Two Sisters: Frances Stout of Chuckey, Tenn., Ruby Vandagriff (Clyde), Elizabethton. Five Grandchildren: Jeremy Hodge, Piney Flats, Andy Taylor (Victoria), Salem Oregon, Josh Taylor (Laurel) Hood River, Oregon, Elizabeth Decker (Kristoff), Fairview , Oregon, and Stephanie Rothell (Marcus), Ankeny, Iowa. Ten Great Grandchildren. A special Aunt & lifetime friend, Phyllis Gouge, Johnson City. Several nieces, nephews & cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jamie Ferguson officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2018 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Patty Hodge. PINEY FLATS - Nila Ruth Fletcher Tinker, 89, Piney Flats, died Monday, November 18, 2019, at her residence, following an extended illness.

Ruth was a member of Edgefield United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene S. Tinker, in 2006, and a sister, Phyllis White.

It is with great grief that we mourn the departure of a precious, very much-loved Daddy, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Brother in love, and Friend, Russell Peters, who, at 85, finished his earthly journey and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. We are devastated by his loss, but we remain with the spiritual values he instilled in us and will forever cherish every day that we had as his beloved family, forever grateful to God for this precious gift. He was the son of the late Clarence M. and Dora Fletcher Peters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and their spouses: Jack and Helen Fletcher, Bynum and Lena Peters, and Willard and Joan Peters. Russell was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and had done various church work over the years. He was a veteran, having served in the National Guard and Army Reserve. Most of his work years were with East Tennessee Chair Company as a band saw operator, who took pride and care in his part of producing beautiful pieces for various chairs. He also worked at NAR and then retired from Blue Ridge Fabricators. He was still an avid go-getter and worked hard, putting his family first with his remaining abilities up to the two weeks preceding his departure. He was at one time an avid gardener, fisherman, hunter-gatherer, wood artist, and enjoyed the mountains and beauty of God’s creation. Those left to cherish his memories and legacy are his beloved, devoted wife of 55 years, Bonnie Peters and cherished daughter, Jill Peters, along with her significant other Tom Davis, two beloved brothers, Norman Peters, Roscoe and Lynetta Peters, two beloved sisters Joyce Grindstaff and Jeanette Bowers, two Brothers and three sisters in love, Charlie(Tom) and Linda Williams, Marvin Williams, Cora Beaumont, and Brenda Riddle, along with treasured nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, as well as many spiritual brothers and sisters. An open visitation for Russell will be held Monday, May 22, 2023, between the hours of 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Willard Peters, 81, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Monday, July 5, 2021, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. He was born on January 19, 1940 to the late Clarence Millard Peters and Dora Belle Fletcher Peters.
Willard was employed by Summers-Taylor, where he retired. He was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. Willard was loved by everyone that had the joy of knowing him. He will be terribly missed by many. After he retired, Willard went back to get his GED. He also served as a volunteer firefighter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Joann F. Peters; an infant sister; his brothers, Jack Fletcher and wife Helen and Bynum Peters and wife Lena; and his brother-in-law, Landon Grindstaff.
Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Wendy Peters of Elizabethton; a step-son and step-daughter, whom he considered his own, Steve Williams and Linda Birchfield, both of Elizabethton; three granddaughters, Cindy James of Elizabethton, Whitney Vines of Kingsport and Lakisha Vines of Knoxville; two great-granddaughters, Caytlin James and Lakyn James, both of Elizabethton; his brothers, Russell Peters and wife Bonnie, Roscoe Peters and wife Lynetta and Norman Peters, all of Elizabethton; and his sisters, Joyce Grindstaff and Jeanette Bowers, both of Elizabethton. Selma Bowers Conley passed away in Christ on Friday, May 5, 2017. Service: A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the Arlington Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4409 Pleasant Ridge in Arlington, Texas. She moved to Dallas, Texas, married Louis H. Evans in 1948. Together, they had six children. She married Howard S. Conley in 1979. Selma was a loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, Nana, Grand-Nana, and good friend to countless people. She was a charter member of the Arlington SDA Church, helping to build the congregation from a 35-member church to one that is now over 2,300 members strong. After faithfully serving as the church secretary/treasurer for over 20 years, she retired in order to enjoy family and friends. She resided in Keene, Texas, the last two years of her life, where she was loved and cared for by many wonderful staff members of Chisholm Trail Estates. Selma was preceded in death by mother, Mary Elizabeth Williams; father, Emeril Bowers; brother, Eric Bowers; husband, Howard Conley; and grandson, Jonathan W Evans Jr. Survivors: She is survived by siblings: Joyce Bowers, James Bowers, Keith Bowers and Sandra Bowers Cederborg, She leaves behind her children: David H. It is with the greatest of sadness that the family of Virginia Carol Clark, 76, of Nashville, announce her passing to be with our father on Sunday, February 11, 2018.
A native of Elizabethton (Stoney Creek), Tenn., she spent the best part of her life in Nashville, Tenn., and worked 31 years with Tennessee Valley Authority. Virginia made many endearing friends at TVA, who were with her in body, spirit and prayers up and to her passing. She was a member of the Winup Organization where she grew a family of exceptional sisters who as well were with her throughout her life. She was a friend to all and a stranger to none. She was and will always be dearly loved.
She will be loving remembered by her children, Greg (Joann) Clark and Lisa Puckett, as well as two wonderful grandchildren, Megan and Andrew Clark.
Virginia was preceded in death by her father, Eston Marcus Buckles; mother, Roxie (Odom) Buckles; eldest brother, Augustus Buckles; and son, Jeffrey Brian Clark.
She is survived in loving memory by two siblings, brother, Douglas (Carolyn) Buckles of Stoney Creek, and sister, Voretta (Phil) French of Knoxville.

Michael Keith Williams, 71, of Elizabethton (Stoney Creek Community), went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jones E. and Kate Buckles Williams.
He is survived by his precious wife of 47 years, Tonie Berry Williams. Also surviving are two daughters, Jessica Williams Manning and husband Phillip of Piney Flats and Christen Williams of Stoney Creek; a granddaughter, McKenzie Storie of Elizabethton; four grand-kitties, Puddin, Joey, Alex and Katie; two sisters, Teresa Williams Holly and husband Gary of Stoney Creek and Julie Williams Tetrick and husband Bill of Elizabethton; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Williams was a member of Harvest Baptist Church, Elizabethton, where he served in the Jail Ministry, Bus Ministry, Sunday School Teacher and Associate Pastor under Pastor Dale Greenwell. He was a 1969 graduate of Unaka High School and a member of the football team. He was a 1991 graduate of ETSU with a Bachelor of Arts with illustration emphasis. He served in the United States Navy from 1976-1980 where he served as a corpsman. He retired from the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in February 2020.
His hobbies included hiking, building model cars, draw & air brush, going to the lake, gardening, attending church when able, attending UHS football games when able, attending Carson-Newman football games and womens basketball games when able, watching West Coast Customs and photography.
A Service to Celebrate the life of Michael Williams will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dale Greenwell and Pastor Paul Lakus officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 18, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section). JOHNSON CITY - Jackie Taylor Winters, 80, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 10, 2020.

She was a daughter of the late William and Beryl Buckles Taylor.

Jackie was a skilled homemaker who enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, gardening, reading her Bible, and watching girls softball – especially the Lady Vols. Her unwavering faith in God, strong will, and joyful sense of humor provided comfort and strength to loved ones as they watched her go through many serious health issues. She would always say, “It’s going to be alright”.

In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by brothers Jerry and Mike Taylor; and grandson Charles Wise. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Charles “C.W.” Winters; children, Barbara Taylor (Terry), Wayne Winters, Terry Winters (Delores Trent), and Pam Weaver (Tommy); siblings, Charles Taylor (Teresa), Jean Langeroudi, and Cindi Taylor; grandchildren, Devon Winters, April Winters, Sheyenne Weaver, and Kendra Keylon; great-great-granddaughter, Rosa Paredes; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at 7:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor James Ginley officiating.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Edell Minton Pierce.
Janice was a graduate of Unaka High School. Prior to her retirement she was employed at Valley Forge Elementary School and Big K. She was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church but attended Horseshoe Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Williams, and a brother, Donald Pierce.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Cameron “Buck” Gentry; her children, Vickie Diane Bennett, Randal Lewis and wife Kimberly, David Gentry and Curtis Gentry and wife Desie, all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Robbie Bowers, Ryan Bowers, Chad Lewis, Andrea Lewis, Brook Thompson and Blake Gentry; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rita Elaine Jenkins and Sandra Kay Richardson, both of Elizabethton, and Debra Ann Blevins, Johnson City; two brothers, Raymond Lowell Pierce, Elizabethton, and Gary Pierce, Bristol, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - Donald B. Carden, age 76, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from his residence, following a brief illness.

Donald was born in Carter County on January 11, 1941 to the late George and Veona Nave Carden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Carden; and one sister, Shirley Turner.

Donald retired from Inland Container and was a member of Siam Baptist Church. He enjoyed walking at Wilbur Dam, golfing, gardening, spending time with his family and watching Tennessee Vols Sports.

Those left to cherish his memory include three sisters, Wilma Sanders, of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Janice Holt and husband Larry, of Jonesborough, TN, and Joyce Taylor, of Lenoir, NC; two brothers, Earnest Carden and wife Etta, and Howard Carden, all of Elizabethton; eleven nieces and nephews; several great nieces and great nephews, as well as several good friends and neighbors, also survive.

ELIZABETHTON - Earnest “Pig” Carden, age 76, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January, 11 2020 from Hermitage Health and Rehab surrounded by his family.

Earnest was born in Carter County to the late George Carden and Veona Nave Carden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Raymond, Donald and Howard Carden and one sister, Shirley Carden Turner of Michigan.

Earnest was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was of the Baptist faith. He loved listening to bluegrass music, attending the covered bridge festivals, hunting, fishing, camping at the lake and rooting for the Tennessee Vols and Hampton Bulldogs. He raised blue ribbon cantaloupe. He was a dedicated employee. He worked at North American Rayon Corporation for over 30 years until they closed. /he retired form Mapes Piano Strings with a decade of service. He did not fear hard work.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Etta Peters Carden; two daughters, Donna Carden and Lisa Ashley and husband Adam; four grandchildren, Brooklynn Ashley, Dawson Boer, Raegan Ashley and Brayden Ashley; three sisters, Wilma Sanders, of Edwardsburg, MI, Jan Holt and husband Larry and Joy Taylor, of Lenoir, NC. Howard "Worm" Carden, age 73, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 17, 2018 from the Johnson City Medical Center. Howard was born in Carter County to the late George and Veona Nave Carden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Mary Campbell Carden; two brothers, Raymond Carden and Donald Carden; and one sister, Shirley Turner.

Howard retired from Star Building Systems and had previously worked at North American Rayon Corporation for 16 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #360, loved to fish, garden and refinishing wood floors. Howard was of the Baptist faith.

ELIZABETHTON – Margaret Ann Carden Campbell, age 75, of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born to the late Lloyd and Estalee Carden on September 22, 1946. Margaret was the eldest of four children. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Margaret treated every child that came into her life as one of her own. She loved having a house full of kids. Margaret always said when the kids were there, she knew they were safe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lloyd Carden, Jr. and daughter, Carrie Ann Campbell. ELIZABETHTON - Bubba Broome, age 65, Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord on May 22 2016. He was the son of Grace Lee Hopson Broome and the late Horace Arnold Broome Jr. Throughout his childhood years Bubba played many sports and was a member of the Elizabethton Boxing Team. He boxed in and won three Golden Glove Tournaments. In later years he was the boxing champion of his battalion while serving in the US Marines in Cuba. During his high school years Bubba was the starting quarterback for the Elizabethton High School Cyclones in his sophomore, Junior and senior years and was a member of the graduating class of 1969. Bubba received a football scholarship at Tennessee Tech University and made the team his first year; however after playing only one season he left to join the United States Marine Corp and was featured on the US Marine Corp Recruitment Poster in 1972. Bubba continued to enjoy sports throughout his life; he was an avid golfer and coached his daughter's softball and basketball teams in the 1990's. Bubba was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. Bubba was a retired realtor and licensed real estate appraiser. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a daughter, Whitney Shea Broome in 2004. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughter, Mackenzie Danielle Broome, Johnson City TN, his mother, Grace Lee Broome, one brother Rick Lee Broome and wife Teresa and one sister, Tana Starr Johnson and husband Michael all of Elizabethton. Several uncles and cousins also survive. Bubba had many wonderful friends who loved, visited and cared for him during his declining health. He will be truly missed by those who will always remember his broad smile and love of life, family and friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Garry Edwards and Terry Pope officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday May 26, 2016 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Mr. Scott Reynolds. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing home for the love and care provided to him during his illness. Active Pallbearers will be John Hardin, Tom Powers, Robert Broome, Ed Garland, Tom Corbett, Mickie Mathis David Smith and Kenneth Dugger. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
