Thomas Jefferson Coffey was the son of McCaleb and Elizabeth (Collette) Coffey. He was born in Caldwell County, N.C. near the town of Patterson. He taught school in Valle Crucis before the Civil War.
When the war started, he enlisted in Company E of the 58th North Carolina Infantry. He ended his service as a Captain.
After the war he was instrumental in building the highway between Blowing Rock and Boone, N.C. He got a charter through the state legislature and along with his brother William Columbus Coffey he got the contract to build the road. The construction began in August of 1893 and was completed in October of 1894.
Thomas Coffey and his wife Mary (Mollie) Greer were the parents of three children. Elizabeth who married Judge W. B. Councill, Margaret who married Stacy Rambo and Stewart who married Miss Sanborn and later Mrs. Roby.
