EMERSON COLE KILLED; RITES FRIDAY AT TEN
Hit-Run Auto Strikes Employee of Local Rayon Mills
Emerson Cole, 26, a resident of the Gap Creek section, was killed last night when he was struck by a hit-run driver, on the Glanzstorff highway near Rio Vista. Butler Wilson, 28, of Rio Vista, who was with Cole, was also struck by the first auto. He suffered a fracture in the right temple, lacerations over the face and small lacerations on the hands. He was treated at the hospital and released.
Cole was hit the second time by an unidentified black sedan as he lay on the highway after Jesse L. Bowery, who first hit him, had gone to call an ambulance. Bowery, driving a couple toward Elizabethton, attempted to halt the hit-run car but was unable to do so.
Cole, an employee of the North American Rayon Corporation, died in a local hospital less than an hour after the unusual accident. He never regained consciousness.
Bowery, who called an ambulance and aided officers in investigating the case, said he struck Cole and Wilson when they were scuffling in the middle of the highway. He said the blinding lights of an approaching auto made it impossible for him to see the young men until it was too late.
C. E. Phillips, proprietor of a nearby filling station, who witnessed the accident, said the two men, had been scuffling in the road for several minutes.
Bowery halted his machine and rushed back to where Cole lay. Wilson was sitting on a bank, Bowery said, and seemed to be dazed. "I then jumped in the car went to the filling station to get aid and call and ambulance. When I got back I saw a car approach and hit Cole. It never stopped," said Bowery.
Lonnie Cole, a brother, said they had been waiting for Emerson to return home from work since three o'clock. Johnson City and Carter County officers and a state highway patrolman have been searching for the driver of the hit-run car.
Cole's injuries consisted of a fractured skull and internal injuries.
He is survived by his father, Frank Cole; his mother; four brothers, Lonnie, Lawrence, Paul, and David; and three sisters, Annie, Vada, and Eva. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning at ten o'clock at the Union Cemetery on the Cherokee Road near Johnson City. The Rev. Elijah Plaster will officiate.

Mr. Thomas M. Cole, Sr., 91, Jonesborough, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

Mr. Cole was a deacon and Sunday school teacher in church until his illness did not allow him to attend. He was of the Baptist faith. He told everyone he met of his savior, Jesus Christ, until he could not speak any longer.

Mr. Cole worked for Tennessee Game and Fish for eleven years prior to retiring from the US Postal Service as a rural carrier after thirty years of service. He worked part-time at Morris-Baker for several years.

He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Melvin as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class during World War II.

He was preceded in death by: his mother, Emily Queen Cole; father, Thomas Jefferson Cole; wife of forty-three years, Bernice Edwards Cole; second wife, Thelma Braswell Cole; one brother, Melvin Cole; and four sisters, Maxie Goodman, Lydia Mae Johnson, Mallie Burleson, and Ruth Chapman.

He is survived by: son, Thomas M. Cole, Jr., and his wife Cathy; twin daughters, Sharon and Karen Cole; four grandchildren, Eric Jones, Kristy Jones, Jeromy Jones, and Nikki Cole Weaver; four great grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Brandon Jones, and J.T. Steet and Madison Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Cole family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. James Ross, Dr. Michael Bookout, and Dr. William Huddleston, as well as Amedisys Hospice Care and nurses Tracey Ratner, Chris Hughes, Debbie Hinkle, Teresa Sims, and Sara Vines.

The family of Mr. Thomas M. Cole, Sr. will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Saturday, January 17, 2015, in the Morris-Baker Chapel. The funeral service will follow with Dr. Gene Lasley officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 1 PM Sunday in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: Shane Morton, Jeromy Jones, Bob Weaver, Brandon Jones, J.T. Steet, and Bill Hicks. Honorary pallbearers are: David Davis, Eric Jones, Josh Mosley, Benny Hagy, and Judge John Keiner. The Boone Dam Post # 4933 and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military honors. Minister, family, and friends are requested to meet at Morris-Baker by 12:30 PM Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Jean Burleson Matherly, 87, Johnson City, passed away December 27, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Born in Johnson City, she was the daughter of the late Mallie Cole Burleson and Arley Robert Burleson. She lived her entire life in Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb H. Matherly; her son, Herbert Matherly Junior; and three brothers, Bill, Bob, and Zane Burleson.

Jean's survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Matherly, Kingsport; Laura Matherly, United Arab Emirates ; two granddaughters, Emily Matherly, Boulder, Colorado; and Angela Matherly, Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, Charles Burleson, Atlanta; and sister, Patsy Waters, Limestone. A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive Ms. Jean.

She attended Fall Street Baptist Church as a child and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Tennessee State University. She was a retired teacher from the Johnson City School System where she taught fifth and sixth grades at North Side and Henry Johnson Elementary Schools.

Jean was a homemaker who enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, quilting, and time with family and friends.

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Shirley Mae Hazelwood, age 75, Jonesborough, passed away Wednesday February 2, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mrs. Hazelwood was a native of Washington County and the daughter of the late Thomas Melvin and Jennette Long Cole. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Kenny Cole, Leroy Cole, Clarence Cole, Evelyn Merriman, and Tommy Cole.
Mrs. Hazelwood was a Homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters Rita Mosier and Rhonda Lovelace (Clint), two grandchildren Wesley Mosier and LaToria Eades (Dustin), great grandchildren Ollie Jo, Amelia Sue and Zane River; brothers and sisters, Roger Cole (Lucy), Harry Cole, Christine Graybeal, David Cole, Larry Cole, Fred Cole (Mary) and Ernest Cole (Mary Lou), and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service for Mrs. Hazelwood will be Saturday February 5, 2022 4:00PM at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor John H. Moore officiating.

D. Joan Furches, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Minister Harry A. Cole and Aileen Walters Cole, born to them on January 13, 1934 in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Joan was a business owner in Jonesborough, Tennessee from November 1965 until 2016, owning and operating three different businesses; Furches Variety Store, The Emporium and Jonesborough Antique Mart. She was active in many of Jonesborough activities; The Progressive Dinner, she started Jonesborough Trick or Treats, by collecting money from merchants, she organized 4th of July fireworks for many years. November 29, 2015 was proclaimed Joan Furches day by the Jonesborough Board of Mayor & Alderman for her commitment to Jonesborough.
Along with her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Robert H. Cole, her daughter, Cynthia K. Furches, her grandsons, B.J. Chase and William A. Greenlee, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Sue Chase (Bill) of Conklin and Lesa Joan Torbett of the home, two grandsons, Jason A. Greenlee of Jonesborough and Michael A. Chase of Erwin, several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by her much loved sister-in-law, Gladys Cole, special friend, Maxie Fox-English and cousin Faye Miller along with many others left behind to cherish her memory.
Funeral services for D. Joan Furches will be conducted on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Pastor Craig Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Christian Church Cemetery with Jason Greenlee, Fred Kemp, Christopher Lee, Robert Cole, Jonathan Cole and Ben Watkins serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Greenlee, Luke Cole and Wade Cole.
