    Chief Master Sgt. (retired) Roy L. Neatherly, Sr., 87, of Sam Wall Avenue, Morganton, died Monday, May 7, 2007, at Autumn Care in Drexel following several years of declining health.

    He was born June 11, 1919, in Crackers Neck, Johnson County, Tenn., and was a son of the late Leeland and Myrtle Greene Neatherly.

    He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force from 1940 until 1970, serving in the Pacific Theatre (which included Clark Field, the Philippines, Guadalcanal, and Australia) during World War II. Roy flew as crew chief on various bomber aircraft, and served as flight line chief for fighter, bomber, and transportation squadrons. His overseas tours included Saudi Arabia, Germany and the Netherlands. Roy participated in the Berlin Air Lift. His military decorations include the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Humane Action Medal, National Defense Service medal with one Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation with four Oak Leaf Clusters, American Service Ribbon with one Bronze Star; and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with four Bronze Stars.

    Mr. Neatherly also participated in Cosmic Ray Research which was the forerunner of the modern space program.

    He was a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church, serving on several church committees and active in the Methodist Men. Roy had been a member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) since 1973 and served in various local and state capacities. He served on the advisory board and was an instructor with the Morganton/Burke Senior Citizen Center and was a member of the Burke County Council on Aging. Roy was involved with the Freedom High School Athletic Boosters and the Oak Hill Athletic Association. He was active in the Morganton/Burke County Crime Stoppers and assisted Morganton Public Safety. Mr. Neatherly was a volunteer usher at the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium (CoMMA), and was named Burke's Best Volunteer in 1989. Roy had been a Ruritan Club member since 1977, serving as a board member, club vice president and club president and chaired several committees. He was elected many times to the position of zone governor, district cabinet member and district governor. He also served as a delegate to the National Convention, was elected to the National Board of Directors in 1985 and was appointed as the Ruritan Foundation Chairperson. Mr. Neatherly was a two-time recipient of the Tom Downing Award for outstanding service to Ruritan National. His hobbies included basket weaving, chair caning and woodworking.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Lucille Williams Neatherly; sons, Roy L. Neatherly Jr. and Phillip Wayne Neatherly; a brother, R. Dean Neatherly; and sisters, Vona Ruth Neatherly and Nell Neatherly Miller.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church.

    Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

    Roy married Grace Lucille Williams about 1950.     Betty June Garland, age 84, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, June 25, 2019. She was born on February 4, 1935 to the late Tom and Perdie Willen Neatherly. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Harold Garland, who passed in 2016; brothers, Bob Neatherly and Harold Neatherly.

    Betty was a homemaker and enjoyed growing and canning vegetables from her garden. She loved to bake and was known for her delicious cakes and pies that she would cook for her family and friends. Betty also enjoyed quilting and made beautiful quilts that her family will treasure.

    Betty loved her family, especially her grandchildren, who she was very proud of. She had a wonderful sense of humor and made everyone smile and laugh with her no non-sense, give it to you like it is attitude.

    She was a member of First Baptist Church.

    Those left to cherish her memories and sense of humor are her daughter, Vicky Reece and husband Marty of Zionville, NC; grandchildren, Shana Scott and husband Paul of Zionville, NC, Stephanie Tolbert and husband Darrin of Boone, NC, and Jeremy Reece and girlfriend Alisha Cornell of Vilas, NC; great grandchildren, Mackensie Scott, Shayne Scott, Elijah Scott, Autumn Scott, Kenleigh Scott and Levi Scott and Briana Tolbert; sisters, Marie Jennings, Kathy Clawson and Martha Neatherly; brothers, George Neatherly and wife Diane, John Neatherly and Tommy Neatherly; special brother-in-law, Norman Garland and wife Judy; special friends, Bill and Mary Nell Reece and Bill and Nancy Hughes; special caregivers, Kelsey Buchanan and Hannah Ligon.

    Funeral service for Betty will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. Special music will be provided by Danny Cullop. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Bill Hughes, J.P. Stanberry, Shayne Scott, Elijah Scott, Jeremy Reece and Paul Scott. Honorary pallbearers are Darrin Tolbert, Norman Garland, Bill Reece, John Payne, Dr. Donald Walters and many more special friends.

    John L. Neatherly, age 78, of 3170 Crackers Neck Road, Mountain City, TN passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at his residence. He was born April 11, 1941 to the late Thomas William Neatherly and Perdie Jessie Williams Neatherly. John was a retired school bus driver and janitor for Johnson County School Systems. He was a member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church and he loved gardening and his tractor. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Reba Forrester Neatherly; two brothers: Harold Neatherly and Bobby Ray Neatherly and one sister: Betty Garland.

    Survivors include: daughter: Lavonda Thomas of Trade, TN; stepson: Clint Dunn of Mountain City, TN; three sisters: Marie Jennings of Mountain City, TN; Martha Neatherly of Boone, NC; and Kathy Clawson of Boone, NC; two brothers: Tommy Neatherly of Mountain City, TN and George Neatherly of Downington, PA; granddaughter Ericka Thomas and great grandson Riley Arnold. Several nieces and nephews and special friends Vicky Roark and family of Avondale PA and Kevin Drummond of Mountain City TN also survive.

    Funeral services for John L. Neatherly will be conducted Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 7:00 pm from the East Side Chapel of Hux & Lipford Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Morefield officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm prior to the funeral service. A private graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2020. Active pallbearers will be Mike Arnold, Ethan Arnold, Tom Icenhour, Cody Mullins, Chris Reece and Mark Hagaman. Honorary pallbearers will be Jessie Brown, Jerry Brown, Carolyn Hawkins, Kevin Drummond and Jody Hawkins.

    Mary Colleen Hawkins Greene, age 89, passed from this life to life everlasting on May 29, 2018. She was a long time member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church and attended as long as her health permitted.

    Colleen accepted Christ early in life. A woman of deep faith and a devoted Christian, she will be remembered by all who knew her as a strong prayer warrior, a kind and loving wife, mother, friend and neighbor, who lived out her days in quietness and confidence in her Lord and Savior.

    Survivors include her loving and devoted son: Richard A. Greene II (Richie), the joy of her life; two sisters-in-law: Shirley Greene Stephenson of Greeneville and Janice Hawkins of Mountain City; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a loving and dedicated friend, Julia Peters.

    She was the daughter of the late Wiley F. Hawkins and Vada Carrie Neatherly Hawkins of Mountain City, Tennessee and was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years: Richard Arvil Greene; brother: Dayton Hawkins of Mountain City; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Oscar T. and Carrie Tilson Greene; brother-in-law: J.N. Stephenson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Evelyn and Ernest Campbell; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Klon and Frances Greene and Brumley and Jane Greene.

    The funeral service was held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
