Notes: William was the oldest son of James Jenkins [1800-1845] and Catherine Bolling [1806- 1900] .He married Elizabeth Jane Snider March 15,1853 in Carter County.Prior to the Civil War, he and his brother David worked as hammermen in a bloom forge in Crab Orchard. William was elected Captain of Company C of the 13th Regiment , Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry upon the organization of that unit . He was an honest , conscientious officer but was in ill health a great part of the time and had to resign January 21, 1865. He was succeeded by his brother, Lieutenant David Boyle Jenkins.After the war was employed as an agent/supervisor in the local iron mining industry. William married Elizabeth Jane Snider about 1853 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. David Boyle Jenkins was born up on Stony Creek in Carter County,Tennessee,the son of James Jenkins and Catherine Bolling.Before the Civil War, he worked as a hammerman in the local iron works.When the war broke out, he was the first man from Carter County to volunteer in the Union Army.He first served as a Sergeant in Company F of the 2nd Tenn. Vol. Inf. Regiment[USA] before accepting a 1st Lieutenant's commission in his brother William's cavalry unit,Company C,13th Reg. Tenn. Vol. Cavalry[USA].He later became company commander of Company C and fought through the entire duration of the war.Returning home, he was employed as a tax collector,he bought and sold real estate and built and operated a water turbine powered flour mill. He died in the house he built next to the flour mill down on Race Street. David married Levisa Evaline Stover about 1869 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Jenkins (1.Catharine1) was born about 1839 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 21 Mar 1865 in Chemung County, , , New York; was buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery, , Chemung County, New York. Notes: Elbert was the son of James Jenkins [1800-1845] and Catherine Bolling [1806-1900]. CSA and Union military records indicate Elbert was conscripted into service with the CSA infantry in Bristol, Tennessee 22 January 1864. He served in Company I, 14th Infantry Regiment [CSA}. This happened while his two older brothers were fighting in the Union Cavalry.The CSA record shows he was captured at Wilderness ,Virginia 4 May 1864. However, the Union records indicate that Elbert " deserted and gave himself up voluntarily at the Wilderness". Yet, the Union records show that he was considered a Prisoner of War and sent him to Belle Plains, Va and then by boat and rail to the Elmira Prison Camp in New York-arriving there sometime after 23 July 1864. He died there 21 Mar 1865 from the terrible prison conditions as did one of every four Confederate prisoners held in Elmira. |

Co.and served as Elizabethton City Treasurer.He served as a deacon for many years at the First Baptist Church and was a trustee of the Watauga Academy ,and was active in school promotion in Carter County.His biography appears in the book "Who''s Who in Tennessee"-A Biographical Reference Book of Notable Tennesseeans of Today. |

She served in the United States Navy during World War II. She was retired as Office Manager at Russ Swanay Real Estate. She was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens. Iris loved to work in her flower garden and yard. She attended Oak Street Baptist Church for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jack Ellis, her daughters Nancy Ellis, Barbara Ellis Melton, her sisters: Ora, Lorraine, Nina, Virginia and Annie and her brothers: David and K.P.
