Mack Edward Clark, age 90, died peacefully March 11, 2010, at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol Tennessee. He was born on February 19, 1920, to the late Lillie Jane Hyder Clark and William Madison Clark in Elizabethton, Tenn.

He served in World War II as an Army Sergeant in Company D, 354th Infantry, 89th Infantry Division. For his involvement in the Rhineland Central European campaign, including the Battle of the Bulge, he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars; Good Conduct Medal; American Theater Ribbon; American Defense Ribbon; and the World War II Victory Medal. He helped liberate Ohrdruf, a Buchenwald sub-camp, on April 4, 1945. Upon discharge for the Army, he worked for S.S. Jones in Johnson City where he completed an apprenticeship as a machinist. He then worked as a machinist for Unisys until he retired in 1983 as a supervisor.

Mr. Clark was a member of Central Christian Church and the Loyal Berean Sunday School Class. He attended regularly until he became a shut-in. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clark was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas (Tom) Clark, Robert (Bud) Clark and Edgar (Eck) Clark; and three sisters, Annie Clark Little, Ossie Clark Heaton and June Clark Vandeventer.

He is survived by his faithful caregiver and beloved wife of 68 years, Sarah Elizabeth Leonard Clark; two daughters, Karen Elaine Clark Salyer and husband David of Campobello, S.C., and Elizabeth Maxine Clark Sams and husband Charles of Bristol Tennessee; three grandchildren, Lisa Sams Abel and husband Larry of Bristol Tennessee, Edward Sams and wife Jackie of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kelly Salyer of Campobello, S.C.; one great-granddaughter, Maura Wilson Trice and husband Tim of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, James (Jim) Clark and wife Nettie of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Charles Bolick and his staff at Sapling Grove, EMS Response teams, MSICU nurses and staff of Wellmont Hospital, and especially the Wellmont Hospice House for their kindness and loving care of Mr. Clark. Funeral service will be held Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel with Minister Eugene Brockley and Minister Ross Dampier officiating.

ELIZABETHTON - James Madison Clark, 84, Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Carter County he was a son of the late William M. and Lillie Jane Hyder Clark. He was a 1951 graduate of Happy Valley High School. Mr. Clark had worked as a maintenance electrician at the Budd Company and the National Casket Company. He was a member of the Local 2155 United Auto Workers Union, Benefits Representative of the Budd Company and President of the Union at the National Casket Company. Mr. Clark was a Member, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher of Big Spring Church of Christ. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Clark was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include: his sweet and loving wife of 59 years, G. Nettie Clark; children: Timothy James (Jamie) and wife Janice Clark, Mark Wayne Clark and friend Mary Mitchell, all of Elizabethton; Granddaughter, Jamie Lee Clark; special Brother-in-law, Sam Hamilton and wife Mable and Sister-in law, Virginia Nave; Several Nieces and Nephews.

The family appreciates the excellent care given to him and his family by the VA Staff, ICU, Surgical Team and the ER Staff. Also a "Special Thank You" to Lisa Butler, Shirlene Odom, Wyatt Phipps and The Ladies of Big Spring Church of Christ.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Glen Layfield, minister officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1:20 p.m. Saturday are: Joel Clark, Robert Clark, Doug Vandeventer, Austin Oaks, Josh Foltz, Jeff Chambers, Johnny Butler and Kenny Little. ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Wilma Ruth Clark Owens, 93, of the Southside Community of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Hillview Health Center. Mrs. Owens was a daughter of the late Robert N. and Marguerite Young Clark and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Owens, on August 8, 1991; a brother, Paul F. Clark and two sisters, Virginia Gouge and Dorothy Pearson.

Mrs. Owens was a retired school teacher as well as having retired from NARC; she was also a charter member of Southside Christian Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her church family and because she had a giving and loving spirit, she loved doing for and helping others. She loved to cook and was an accomplished baker, known for her butterscotch, coconut and chocolate pies. She also liked to sew and crochet.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Connie Hicks and her husband, Pat; Jonni Simerly and her husband, Dan; all of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Andrew Hicks, Laura Hardy and her husband, Jason, Julie Simerly, Daniel Simerly; a brother-in-law, Jim Pearson, Elizabethton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Jean Owens, Bluff City; a sister-in-law, Janie Cain, Gray, and several special nieces and nephews. Her special "family", the members of Southside Christian Church also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Owens will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Southside Christian Church, 1610 Southside Road, Elizabethton, with Mr. Michael Koruschak, Minister, and Mr. Paul Knapp, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends in the church from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Andrew Hicks, Daniel Simerly, Jason Hardy, Aaron Gray, Robert Clark, Dr. Jimmy Pearson, Lee Gouge, David Clark and Bruce Cakebread. Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders and Deacons of Southside Christian Church, her many church friends at Southside Christian Church and Dr. James Shipley and staff. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the cemetery at 10:50 AM on Wednesday.

John B. "Bob" McInturff, age 89, passed away Sunday, November 17th after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Unicoi, TN, he lived most of his life in Johnson City, TN.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Marge; his parents Dewey and Myrtle McInturff; brothers Dave and Fred; sisters Mary, Dot, Thelma, and Viola; nephew Steve McInturff; great-niece Megan Hulse; and beloved family dog Molly.

Bob is survived by his daughter Kathy; sisters Jean, Peggy (Johnny), Val (Rich), and Kathy (Mike); and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was an Army veteran who served in the Korean war. Upon returning home, he worked for the U.S.Postal Service until his retirement in 1985. He also worked with his wife Marge in the flower shop they co-owned, "Flowers by Marge".

He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir. For several years he also sang with "The Appalachian Express Chorus". In later years, his love of music led him to record some of his favorite gospel songs. He also recorded a tribute to his life with his late wife Marge, " Down Memory Lane" (Margie Remembered). This song was co-written with his longtime friend, Fred Stewart.

Bob donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the E.T.S.U. Quillen College of Medicine.

A special celebration of Bob's life and his love of music will be held in the Spring of 2020. An announcement will be made in advance of this memorial tribute.

UNICOI - Imojean “Jean” Roberts, age 85, Unicoi, passed away Monday March 1, 2021 at her residence. She was a daughter of the late Dewey and Myrtle Whittimore McInturff.

Jean was a native of Unicoi County, but had lived forty years in Johnson City before returning to Unicoi. She was a retired certified dental assistant. Jean was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: J. Fred McInturff, J.D. “Dave” McInturff, J.B. “Bob” McInturff; four sisters: Mary McInturff Nelson, Thelma McInturff Ray, Dot McInturff, Viola McInturff Barcel; one nephew, Steve McInturff; two great nephews: Chad Vance and Luc Vance; one great niece, Megan Hulse.

Jean leaves behind to cherish her memory, two daughters: Angela Roberts and Donna Gibbs; one granddaughter, Shanna Gibbs; three sisters: Peggy Johnson (Johnny) of Unicoi, Kathy Reavey (Mike) of Crowley, TX, Val Robinson (Rich) of Gettysburg, PA; five nephews: Mike Barcel, Scott McInturff, Rick McInturff, Sean Reavey, Chris Robinson; eight nieces: Sharon Gardner, Wanda Vance, Teresa Phillips, Connie Booth, Kathy McInturff, Robin Johnson, Cindy Jordan, Ashley Barcel; several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday March 5, 2021 in the McInturff-Barnett Cemetery. Rev. Tim Broyles will officiate. Family will serve as pallbearers.

Viola "Vi" Jane Barcel, age 71, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by her family. She lived most of her life in Erwin and was a daughter of the late Dewey and Myrtle Whittimore McInturff. Vi was employed by the Unicoi County Highway Department. She was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Fred and Dave McInturff; three sisters: Mary Nelson, Thelma Ray and Dot McInturff; nephew, Steve McInturff; great niece, Megan Hulse; sister-in-law, Margie McInturff.

Vi leaves behind to cherish her memory, one daughter, Ashley Barcel, of the home; one son, Mike Barcel and wife, Valerie, Unicoi; one brother, Bob McInturff, Johnson City; four sisters: Jean Roberts, Johnson City, Peggy Johnson and husband, Johnny, Unicoi, Kathy Reavey and husband, Mike, Crowley, TX, Val Robinson and husband, Rich, Gettysburg, PA; one grandson, Mason Barcel; four nephews: Scott McInturff, Rick McInturff, Sean Reavey and Chris Robinson; nine nieces: Sharon Gardner, Wanda Vance, Connie Booth, Teresa Phillips, Kathy McInturff, Angie Roberts, Donna Gibbs, Robin Johnson and Cindy Jordan; several great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law: Leona McInturff, Johnson City.

BRISTOL - Elizabeth Maxine Clark Sams, 76, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 22, 2018 at the Bristol Hospice House.

She was born September 14, 1942 in Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Mack and Elizabeth Clark. Maxine taught chemistry and physics for 30 years and retired from Bristol Virginia High School in 1999. She was a member of Central Christian Church and was very active until illness forced her to slow down. Maxine was involved with Meals on Wheels, Hospice House, Bristol Food Pantry and Youth Programs

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Charles N. Sams; daughter, Lisa Leonard and husband David; son, Ed Sams and wife Jackie; granddaughter, Maura Trice and husband Tim; great grandchildren, Eddie and Gabby Trice; sister, Karen Salyer and husband Dave; nieces, Elizabeth Bellamy and husband David, Kelly Medley and husband Cale, and Sandra Osterhaus and husband Tim; sister-in-law, Martha Sams; aunt, Nettie Clark; several cousins; and a host of friends.

The funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Central Christian Church with Joel Faidley officiating. The family will receive friends 1 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service. The committal service will follow at Shelby Hills Cemetery with Minister Mark Overton officiating. Pallbearers will be David Leonard, Tim Trice, Bobby Mosier, Dennis Holbrook, Mike Hodgson, Rob Feagins, Harold Campbell and John O'Dell.
