Sharon Kenneth "Bub" Vance, 92, died Friday evening, August 2, 2019, at his home in Jonesborough, Tenn., surrounded by members of his loving family following a seven-month battle with cancer.

Born March 11, 1927 in Crossnore, NC, "Bub" was one of three albino children born to Jeter H. Vance and his wife, Blanche Snodgrass Vance, who together owned and operated a popular store and café during the Great Depression. Jeter Vance was one of the first mayors of Crossnore.

Bub grew up in the family business and became a great cook, himself, eventually preparing large meals for local construction crews who were in the area building roads. Even in his advanced age, Bub loved being in the kitchen, especially where he enjoyed baking and canning garden goods.

Along with the rare genetic condition of albinism came serious visual impairment, but that did little to inhibit his skills as an auto mechanic, for which he was well known. He operated a garage at his home in Crossnore for many years, ran a service station, and worked for various automobile dealerships through the years. He had a real love for cars and trucks, and throughout his life, literally owned hundreds of vehicles.

He loved country music and was an accomplished dancer and, along with his wife, Rita, spent Saturday nights doing the two-step at a favorite night spot near their home, right up until his diagnosis in January. He also loved to square dance, and in his early years, enjoyed roller-skating. He and Rita loved taking day trips out into the countryside and enjoyed stopping at yard sales along the way. He also loved to read and work puzzles and could solve the complicated Sudoku puzzles quicker than most.

Bub attended Crossnore High School, served as a member of the Crossnore Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, and was a longtime member of Crossnore First Baptist Church; after moving to Jonesborough in the late 80s, he attended Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren.

Bub was the last of his generation, having outlived dozens of cousins and other relatives in the Aldridge, Vance and Snodgrass family line. Until recently, he shared the designation of longest-living relatives with cousins Bob Aldridge and Tudor Vance.

Bub was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Mary Lou Pritchard and Juanita Jean O'Connor. The deaths of his wife, Mary Agnes Bare Vance, to whom he was married for 30 years, and the deaths of his three sons, Jerry, Mike and Sharon Eugene "Buddy" Vance, left painful voids in his life.

He later remarried and is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rita Archer Vance of the home, who lovingly and patiently cared for him In his last days and brought much joy to his life, his son, Bruce Vance of Piney Flats, Tenn., and his daughter, Patty Vance Knowles of Elk Park, NC. His stepchildren, Lee, David and Cissy Archer of Jonesborough also survive, as well as several grandchildren, including Justin Knowles, and step grandchildren, Aiden and Belle Young, Kaylee and Brayden Archer. He is also survived by several nieces including Gail Polson, Sherrie Norris and Sandra Galloway, and one nephew, Joe Pritchard, all of North Carolina, a second cousin, Rosalee Odoms and husband Paul, of Johnson City, and several close friends, including Tommy Carpenter, Bill and Edna Vance and Ruth Hahn Herbert from North Carolina, and a special sister-in-law, Loretta Bare Freeman and her husband, Eugene, of Martinsville, Va. He will also be missed by Rita's family in Jonesborough, including Zula Carroll and Lee Slagle, special friends Jim and Carolyn Rogers, Shelby Summie, Kathy Saylor, Lois and Randy Peterson, Valerie and Darrell Phillips, and his pastor, Don Hilton.

The Vance family would like to thank Avalon Hospice for the loving care they administered in the final days of his life.

A memorial service for Sharon Kenneth "Bub" Vance will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, at the Vance home at 172 Bob Crookshanks Rd. in Jonesborough. A headstone bearing his name in the Johnson Cemetery near Crossnore will serve as a reminder of a life well lived for many years to come.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1929 in Avery County, NC, a son of Jim McClure Vance and Joda Pyatte Vance.

Jim was a member of Crossnore First Baptist Church, where he formerly served as Chairman of the Deacons. He was a member of the Linville Masonic Lodge #489. He enjoyed listening to Gospel Hymns and Country Music, especially Alan Jackson.

The family received friends from 1 p.m. to the service hour at Crossnore First Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Pyatte Cemetery.

Thomas Martin Vance, (Tom Vance), 84, died on March 3, 2022, due to complications of Covid-19 at Atrium Health Carolina Medical Center. Tom was vaccinated and boosted but was immune-compromised due to leukemia and chemotherapy treatments.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, James (Jim) McClure Vance, Sr. (1892-1961) and his mother, Joda Blanche Pyatte Vance, (1900-1977) along with five brothers and seven sisters.

Tom is survived by his wife, Jean Hicks Vance, and his only child, Michael Thomas Vance of Mint Hill, NC. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Eula Maxine Vance Nicholas of Gainesville, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Tom was born December 12, 1937, in Crossnore, NC, the southern part of Avery County. He was the youngest of fourteen children. Tom attended the Crossnore School. It was at this school in 7th grade that Tommy found his love for theater, when he was cast in a play directed by his theater teacher, Kate Cornue. After that, he was hooked on theater.

Tom graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1960 with a degree in English and Social Studies. He continued at Appalachian, where obtained a Master’s in English and Education. After that, he attended UNC Chapel Hill and the University of Georgia for doctoral studies in theater.

At Appalachian State, Tom was elected President of the Playcrafters drama club. It was there that he met his future life-long wife, Jean Hicks, when she auditioned in front of him to join the club. Tom was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” at Appalachian State in his senior year.

After graduating, Tom taught at several schools, as well as Wingate University. In 1967, he started the drama program at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). His legacy began in 1974, when Tom and Charles Starnes created the CPCC Summer Theatre, a professional summer stock theater company, where he directed over 150 productions and produced over 250 shows over his lifetime.

Tom also was the host of a Television show, “The Tom Vance Show,” which played for decades on the CPCC channel.

In 2011-12, the Metrolina Theater Association awarded Tom the “Lifetime Theater Award.”

Tom was especially proud of the many fine people, who worked with him in theater and have gone on to achieve considerable success in the theatrical world. Tom discovered many talented people at the start of their careers, and he nurtured them and provide them their first job in the theater industry. Hundreds of them moved to New York and worked on Broadway, the Metropolitan Opera, national and international tours, as well as many regional theatres across the country. Many of Tom’s discoveries went on to have amazing careers in the film and television industry, as well.

Tom was also so proud of everyone he worked with, but he held a special place in his heart for those that went into the theatre teaching profession, where his gifts will continue to live on.

On Saturday, May 28, there will be a service at Blair Road United Methodist Church in Mint Hill, NC. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. There will be a 2 p.m. service at the church followed by a graveside service at Sharon Memorial Gardens (at Monroe Rd/Sharon Amity Rd). That same evening, on May 28 at 7 p.m., there will also be a celebration in honor of Tom Vance at the Halton Theater on the CPCC campus, near downtown Charlotte. Come be part of the celebration of Tom’s life and legacy. Come sing, talk, eat, drink, and laugh while remembering Tom and give him his final standing ovation. All are welcome.

On Saturday, June 4, there will be a drop-in celebration at the Meeting House at 12 Fountain Circle in downtown Crossnore, NC. Drop in anytime between noon and 2 p.m. We will have photos, music and food, as we celebrate Tommy’s life. Hope everyone can drop by!

She was born on December 28, 1928 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Toss Vance and the late Florence Taylor Vance.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband, Jay Walter Buchanan; and Sister, Martha Hawks.

Jean was a member of Minneapolis Christian Church. She enjoyed drawing, and writing in her journal. She also loved her family and spending time with them. She enjoyed listening to Gospel music.

Colleen loved working at the Shady Lawn Restaurant, where she enjoyed talking with and serving her customers. She never met a stranger and was always cheerful and full of life. People would drive for miles just to eat her magnificent cooking. Colleen also enjoyed traveling and was still driving at the young age of 93.

Clarence A. Winters, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family members on April 21, 2018. He was born May 8, 1927, in Avery County to the late Howard Lindsay Winters and Lula Octava (Oakes) Winters. He was preceded on death by three sons: Clifford Allen, Douglas Arthur, and Marion Alexander, and three brothers, three sisters, and one granddaughter.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 71 years, Melba Jean Barrier Winters of the home; three sons: Marlon Lavon Winters (Rhonda) of Asheboro, Larry D. Winters (Victoria) of Hudson, Keith Eldon Winters of the home, Loree Dawn Stackhouse (Mason) of Panaca, Nev. He is also survived by one brother: Thomas Emmitt Winters of Spruce Pine; and sisters: Carol June Winters Ollis of Morganton, and Delphia Jean Winters of LaFollette, Tenn..

Additional survivors include grandchildren: David Winters (Susan) of Clemson, SC, Jeremy Winters (Andrea) of Statesville, Alicia Robinson (Neil) of Mt. Holly, Lynette Brewer (Aaron) of Mooresville, Paige Stanich of Statesville, Cameron Reed (Shannon) of Lehi, Utah, Krista Patrick (Thomas) of Rogers, Ark., Robert Winters of Millville, Utah, Richard Winters (Savannah) of Eagle Mtn., Utah, Megan Boring (Wade) of Millville, Utah, Michael Winters of Logan, Utah, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather.

At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the United States Navy and served for two and a half years. He retired as a mail carrier of the US Postal Service after 28 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Newton, NC, and an honorary member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

He was a lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in multiple positions of leadership. His passion was genealogy and researching family history, as evidenced by his 18 years of working with the local genealogy library. He has written 18 family history books and helped organize the Genealogy Society of Catawba County, where he served as the co-president and was a co-author of the Catawba County Heritage Book. Clarence loved to talk and share stories of his experiences; stories and sometimes tall tales that were found during his researching of the genealogies of families within this region.

The family will receive family and friends at Jenkins Funeral Home, Startown Road, Newton, NC, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018. The funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Thorneburg Drive, Conover, NC, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Following the service, a private burial service will be held at the family cemetery, the White Pine Cemetery in Newland, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Catawba Regional Hospice.

Roger Odell Oakes, 66, of Roan Mountain, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jack and Cleo Potter Oakes.
Roger was a graduate of Cloudland High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Infantryman Badge: Expert (Rifle). He attended Roan Mountain United Methodist Church. He loved to hunt fish and go camping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lynn Oakes, and a sister, Brenda Banks.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Barbara Hall Oakes; his children, Adam Oakes and Braydin Oakes, both of Roan Mountain, and Devin Oakes, Fort Polk, La.; a granddaughter, Aaliyah Oakes; his sisters, Orah Lee Andrews, Butler, Sandra Henson and Jackie Thomas, both of Roan Mountain; five brothers, Kenneth Oakes, Lenoir, N.C., Larry Oakes, Banner Elk, N.C., Tommy, Terry and Rhudy Oakes, all of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roger Odell Oakes were conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at High Point Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Dennis Millhorn officiating. Graveside services and interment were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, in the Brewer-Oakes Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers were Adam Oakes, Mike Ward, Tommy Oakes, Little Larry Oakes, Jerry Potter, Randy Brinkley, Scott Oakes, Josh Oakes and Jerry Jones. Honorary pallbearers were his many friends at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at High Point Baptist Church. Military Honors were provided by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Waightstill Gordon Aldridge, 83, of Ridge, MD passed away peacefully on April 4, 2023 at home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on October 3, 1939 in Banner Elk, NC to the late Lewie McClure Aldridge, Sr. and Mary Corinna (Avery) Aldridge.

Gordon or better known as Nookie in Carolina, earned his Associate in Arts degree from Lees McRae College in Banner Elk. On November 10, 1966, he eloped to marry the love of his life, Betty Davis Aldridge, in Arlington, VA at the courthouse. Together they celebrated over 54 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on March 2, 2021.

He and his brothers began their automotive career, working side by side with their father at Aldridge Ford. The Ford Dealership was started in 1962. Gordon retired in 2007, when the dealership was sold. The family effort was successful in growing a large, community based, business in Southern Maryland. He and Betty enjoyed spending their winters in Fort Pierce, Florida after he retired. Gordon loved spending time with his family and vacationing in his birthright of North Carolina. He enjoyed getting back to his beloved Family homeplace in Plumtree, NC as often as he could. He loved his time in the mountains with his family. Gordon ran his own motorcycle business in the late 70's, early 80's which he called Aldridge Kawasaki. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle. He loved listening to music whether being played live or on the radio. He especially loved hearing the guitar being played. He loved all kinds of music. He loved his family more than anything and will be missed.

Gordon is survived by his children: Gina Michele Aldridge (Ralph) of Jacksonville, FL, Kimberly A. Norris (Brian) of Leonardtown, MD and Jason A. Aldridge of Leonardtown, MD his siblings: Lewie Aldridge Jr. (Judy), Paul Joe Aldridge (Pam), and Van Aldridge, all of Lexington Park, MD; grandchildren: Jacqueline Norris, Kateline Readmond, Jonathon Norris and Judge Aldridge; his special great-grandaughter, Adelyn Jane Readmond; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty.

Sandra Aldridge Calloway, 80, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021 at her residence.

She was born on September 11, 1940 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Talton Wade Aldridge and the late Jacqueline Goins Aldridge.

She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church Newland, where she was a Sunday School Teacher and sang in the choir. She later joined the Plumtree Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin H. “Bud” Calloway and her sister, Sue Wagner.

Juanita Greene Vance, 77, of Minneapolis, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 24, 2022 at her home.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Spurgeon Jesse and Artie Bell Johnson Greene. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Johnny Mack Greene, Joe Greene, and Donald Greene; and sisters, Barbara Ann Duncan, Willa Mae Buchanan and Martha Hicks.

Juanita loved the Lord and enjoyed listening to gospel music, especially the Primitive Quartet. She loved being outdoors, her flowers, gardening and cooking, but mostly loved spending time with her family.

Surviving are her children, Kelly Vance Gragg and husband, Doug, of Newland and Scottie Dean Vance and wife, Monica, of Burnsville; brother, Gary Greene of Newland; grandchildren, Karmen Birchfield and husband, Colby and Matt Vance; step-grandchildren, Somer Ray and husband, Jason and Abby Robinson and husband, Charlie; ten great-grandchildren; the father of her children, Harold Vance of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will have a private family viewing at Johnson Chapel on Squirrel Creek prior to a private graveside service in the Cranberry Cemetery. Rev. Doug Bare will officiate.

Charles W. Trice, 91, of Newland passed away at his home Thursday morning, May 13, 2021 after a prolonged illness.

He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 69 years, Louise; his daughter, Kathie Massee (David, deceased); and his son, Charles W. Jr., “Bill” (Kathy). He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who loving called him “Papa”, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vaughn and Thosa (Johnson) Trice; his son, Rodney Evan (Regina), two brothers, Bob and Max; and two sisters, Corine and Maxine.

Charles was a lifelong native of Avery County and was a prominent contractor of many quality homes in the area, particularly at Grandfather Golf and Country Club during its early development. He was proud to have also served as general contractor for construction of beautiful homes for all three of his children.

He was dedicated to his family and his church, Vale Free Will Baptist. He served fifty years as a Master Mason of Linville Lodge No. 489. He enjoyed ‘coon hunting and training his hounds in his earlier years.

Graveside services for Charles Trice were held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Sharon Johnson, 68, of Swannanoa, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, N.C. Sharon was born in Elizabethton to the late Jack Dempsey Johnson and Mary Kate Burrow Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an older sister, Kathy Jones.
Sharon was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith and had worked as a certified nursing assistant. Sharon loved her job in healthcare and taking great care of her patients. She also enjoyed cooking and playing games but loved her family most of all.
Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Anthony Dale Johnson, Crystal Gail and Matthew; her grandchildren, Victoria, Reece, Justin, Dylan, Danielle, Austin, Damien and Harper; her sister, Priscilla; and her nieces and nephews, Mary Elizabeth, Andrew James and Samantha Ann.

Mendy was a member of Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed thrift store shopping, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her family.

Interment was in the Cranberry Cemetery at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020.

Bud was born on March 7, 1946 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Robert Mershell Trice and the late Peggy Laws Trice.

He graduated from Newland High School and was the Owner and Operator of Bud's Auto Service in Newland for 37 years. Prior to tha,t he owned and operated Newland Sunoco for 12 years. He enjoyed country music and was an avid antiques collector.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Clark Trice; and sister, Christine Trice.
