KNOXVILLE - Cleo M. Blackwell, age 101, passed away on December 25, 2018 at West Hills Health and Rehabilitation, Knoxville TN, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Blackwell was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, a teacher in Carter County for 15 years and Rogersville City Schools for 22 years and a member of Rogersville First Baptist Church. Those preceding her in death: husband, Max L. Blackwell; parents James A. Morrell, Sr. and Belle Miller Morrell; siblings, A.T., James, Joseph W., John and Delia Morrell, and Lavisa Hood.

She is survived by children, Michael Blackwell and wife Kay, and Debbie Weed and husband Stuart; grandchildren, Callie Church and husband Justin, Kelly Weed, Jessica Hemphill and husband, John Serrao, and Rachel Hemphill; great-grandchild, Benjamin Jenkins; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

John Dayton Morrell, son of James Allen Morrell, Sr. and Cassa Belle Miller Morrell, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, after a short illness. He asked God to take him home. He was born on June 1, 1921.

Born handicapped, John was able to live a lively, happy and active life. He has one surviving sister, Cleo Morrell Blackwell, in Rogersville, Tennessee; a stepson, Gurney Ray Pilk; and several nieces and nephews.

JOHNSON CITY - Effie Grace Brown Rupe Miers, 96, Johnson City, died Sunday, July 11, 2021, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Effie Grace was born in Johnson City and was a lifelong resident. She was a daughter of the late Alfred Jessie and Grace Ann Crow Brown.

Effie Grace was a graduate of State Teachers College, where she received her teaching degree. She retired from Johnson City Medical Center as a Pharmacy Technician. Effie Grace was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church which started as Union Baptist. She was an excellent seamstress, making wedding gowns and formal attire. Effie Grace enjoyed gardening and was a lover of music. She always believed in angels among us.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 30 years, Floyd Rupe, second husband of 10 years, Arnold Miers, sister, Mildred Brown, son-in-law, Royce Couch.

Effie Grace is survived by a daughter, Ann Marie Couch; son, Joel Rupe and wife Carolyn; step-son, Eric Miers; granddaughters, Amy Burnett and husband David, Emily Wilhite and husband Marc, Lacey Garner and husband James; great grand-children, Porter, Grayson, Abby-Carolyn, Jake, Noah, Ella Grace, Emma Rose.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at 11:00 A.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. James Cambron, officiating. The graveside committal service will follow in Peoples Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Estep was a homemaker and a member of Dennis Cove Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Hasford R. Estep; a daughter, Frances K. Marie C. Crow Perry, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017, at Hermitage Health Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Maybelle Barnette Crow.
Mrs. Perry was retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 46 years of service. She was a member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl William Perry, who died September 18, 1989; her sister, Jane Calhoun; and her brothers, James and Howard Crow.
Survivors include her son, Gary Perry, of the home; three brothers, Alfred, Carl and Harry "Bea" Crow; three sisters. Edith Keplinger, Florence Robinette and Shirley Matheson; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Crow proudly served his coun-try in the US Army. He served dur-ing the Korean con-flict and the Vi-et-nam War and was awarded two pur-ple hearts. He re-tired as a Ser-geant First Class af-ter more than twenty years of ser-vice.
He was a mem-ber of Piney Grove Free-will Bap-tist Church.
In ad-di-tion to his par-ents, his sis-ter, Jane Cal-houn, and son, Billy Crow, pre-ceded him in death.

KINGSPORT - Florence Docia Crowe Robinette, 86, of Kingsport, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 27, 2021. Throughout the day and night, Florence was surrounded by her family including all her children and grandchildren. She passed peacefully holding hands with the love of her life, husband Don, and her granddaughter Abby.

Florence, the 7th of ten siblings, was born on June 10, 1935 in Dennis Cove, Hampton, Tennessee to May Belle Barnett Crowe and Ernest Crowe. Florence and Donald (Don) Robinette were married on March 28, 1959 and recently happily celebrated their 62nd and one-half anniversary. She was an active member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed helping with the food pantry on Saturdays. Florence attended Beauty School in Kingsport and owned Florence’s Beauty Salon for over 50 years. She enjoyed washing, cutting, perming, coloring, and fixing hair for all her many customers and family. She best enjoyed talking and sharing memories with everyone.

Florence is preceded in death by her parents, May Belle and Ernest; her brothers Jim, Harold, and Carl; her sisters Marie and Jane; and her beloved Aunts Ruby and Trudy.

Left to cherish Florence’s memories, especially her delicious and much requested macaroni and cheese and cheesy potato casserole, are her loving husband Don; son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Camille Robinette of Salisbury, NC; her daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Jasen Wells of Kingsport, TN; and five grandchildren who was their dearly loved Mammaw - C.J. Wells (Kelsey), Jayna Gabriel (Jon), and Abigail, Zachary, and Alexander Robinette. She was also blessed with one great grandson, Caden Jack Wells. Florence is also survived by two sisters Shirley and Edith and two brothers Alfred (Phyllis) and Bea (Patsy)

A funeral service for the family will be held at 2pm at East Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens with Pastors Ray Amos and Michelle Malcolm officiating. A private family graveside service will follow. Pallbearers are family members Bryan, Zachary, and Alexander Robinette, Jasen and C.J. Wells, and Jon Gabriel.

The family would like to thank all the many friends who checked in on Florence and Don. Mrs. Harvey was the daughter of the late Warner and Katherine Heaton Shell.

She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Mrs. Harvey was the Executive Secretary for the local Selective Service Board and retired from the Administrative Board of the Selective
Service of Tennessee.
She is preceded in death by her husband, G.A. "Red" Harvey, 1975; one sister, Ruth Laurain, and one brother, Cecil Shell.

David Erby Shell, 83, husband of Joyce Glover Shell, of 1045 Westmoreland Drive, died Friday, February 28, 2014, at Augusta Health, Fishersville.

He was born September 2, 1930, in Elizabethton, TN, a son of the late Warner and Katherine (Heaton) Shell.

Mr. Shell was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Korean War.

He received a B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State College and a M.A. Degree from East Tennessee State University.

He taught school in Carter County, Tennessee for three years, Bath County for two years, Augusta County for four years, and twenty-one years in Staunton at Lee High School, John Lewis Junior High, and Shelburne Middle School.

He was a member of Staunton Church of the Brethren, Masonic Elizabethton Lodge, and Staunton Elks.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, family members include two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Rebecca Shell and Michael Warner Shell, all of Staunton; a step-grandchild, Olivia Perry; a sister, Phyllis Shell Reed of Jonesboro, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Warner, Jr. and three sisters, Helen Martin, Francis Harvey, and Ruth Laurain.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in Staunton Church of the Brethren by Pastor Scott Duffy.

Mr. Whitehead was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Garfield and Ethel Lacey Whitehead. He was also preceded in death by a son, Clarence W. Whitehead Jr., three brothers, Jack Whitehead, J.D. Whitehead and Eugene Whitehead, and a sister, Iva Lee Whitehead.
Mr. Whitehead was of the Baptist faith and was owner/operator of Whitehead Greenhouse and a retired employee of Jarl Extrusions. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ollie Carden Whitehead, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda Gail and Leslie McCracken, Chuckey, and Wanda and Charles Gentry, Elizabethton; a son, Steven Douglas Whitehead, Johnson City; and three grandchildren, Andrew Daniel Whitehead, Elizabethton, Christina "C.C." McCracken and John Joseph "J.J." McCracken, both of Chuckey. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Robert "Tense" Whitehead, 85, of Hampton, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Robert was born in Hampton, Tenn., to the late Garfield and Ethel Lacy Whitehead. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence Whitehead, Jack Whitehead, William Whitehead and J.D. Whitehead, and one sister, Ivalee Whitehead.
Robert was a farmer and loved gardening, being outdoors, working and loved farming.
Those left to cherish his memory include two brothers, Jessie J. Whitehead and wife Patsy of Hampton and Richard Whitehead and wife Erlene of Stoney Creek in Elizabethton, and two sisters-in-law, Sue Whitehead of Butler, Tenn., and Ellen Whitehead of Pennsylvania. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Robert "Tense" Whitehead will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 2, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Estelle Radford Johnson Vance, age 92, of Newland, NC passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at her residence.

She was born on Dec. 8, 1926, in Avery County, NC, a daughter of the late James Thurmond Radford and the late Minnie Cornett Radford.

Estelle was a loving wife, mother and granny. She enjoyed her time volunteering at Sloop Memorial Hospital and always having the welfare of children in her heart, she was also volunteered at the Blair Fraley Sales Store at the Crossnore School. She was a loyal and faithful member of the Crossnore First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her Father: James Thurmond Radford; Mother: Minnie Louise Radford; Sister: Louise Murray; Brother: Glen Cornett; First Husband: Cecil H. ELIZABETHTON - Gary Wayne Perry, 74, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 16, 2023. A lifelong resident of Elizabethton, he always had a smile on his face and was willing to help anyone. He had a heart of gold and a knack for talking on the phone. He loved the Lord and was a friend to all that knew him. Gary was the son of the late Earl & Marie Crow Perry. He was a graduate of Hampton High School and was a devoted member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Matheson Tool & Die. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by uncles: Howard, Jim, Carl, and Alfred Crow, Carl Keplinger and Clarence Perry, his aunts: Annie Crow, Phyllis Crow, Jane Calhoun, and Florence Robinette.

He leaves behind Aunts: Edith Keplinger, Shirley Matheson, Margaret Crow, a special Uncle Harry “Bea”, and Patsy Crow and Don Robinette, as well as a host of cousins. He loved his church family and had many special friends including his caregiver and best friend, Sue Tolley and his little buddy Stetson Lane Cornette; also Sammie Sue, his furry baby cat.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gene Fleenor officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Ruth Ann Martin Lundy, 79, of Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord on Friday morning, February 15, 2019, at Greystone Healthcare Center following a three-week battle with cancer.
Ruth spent her younger years growing up in Siam until her teens when the family moved to Johnson City. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and went on to complete her LPN and RN, and BSN at East Tennessee State University. Ruth or "Ruth Ann" started out her career as a Candy Striper and then as an LPN at the old Johnson City Memorial Hospital. Throughout her career she taught nursing and was the Assistant Director of Nursing at The Christian Village. She worked for many years as a Psyche Nurse, starting at Watauga Mental Health and then Woodridge. She would later move to help start the Psyche Unit at Northside Hospital in Johnson City where she retired.
Ruth loved to play cards, travel and shop. In her later years she had two special pets, Cocoa and then Roxie. We have no doubt they were waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge. She was a gifted singer and song writer bringing much comfort and joy to others. She freely sang for friends, family, and church congregations. Her original songs were angelic and provided her some peace as well as others who were fortunate enough to hear them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Sizemore Martin Sr. and Helen Roberta Shell Martin, and a brother, Thomas S. Martin Jr., of Johnson City.
She is survived by her daughter, Penny Ogletree (Paul) of Blountville; brother, Fred Martin (Diane) of Sevierville; niece, Alison Martin-Creed (Robert) of Arlington; and nephew, Alan "Lanny" Martin (Katie) of Knoxville.
The family of Ms. Lundy will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in the Dogwood Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Morris-Baker in the Dogwood Chapel with Pastor Wayne Emery officiating.

This was the day, February 27th, 2018, that the Lord had made to take Steven Douglas Whitehead home to be with his family in Heaven.

Steve went to bed on Monday night, February 26th and died peacefully during the night.

Steven was born on May 31st, 1960, to Ollie Carden Whitehead and Clarence Walter Whitehead of Carter County. They were waiting at the River Jordan for him as was his brother Clarence Walter Whitehead, Jr. and his sister, Wanda Yvonne (Bonnie) Whitehead Ritchie Gentry. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Garfield and Ethel (Lacey) Whitehead and his maternal grandparents Laney James Carden and Alice (Teague) Carden. Many other uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends were there to receive him.

He is survived by a sister Glenda Gail Whitehead McCracken formerly of Hampton, TN currently residing in Orfordville, WI; a brother-in law Leslie Lewis McCracken; niece Christina McCracken, Orfordville, WI; nephews John Joseph McCracken (Katie Jacoby) Madison, WI; Andrew Daniel Whitehead (Shanda Campbell); great-niece Kaila Zevon Whitehead of Johnson City, TN; a guardian nephew Jeffery Rutter, Oshkosh, WI; brother-in law Michael Charles Gentry of Siam as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Steven was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church. A graduate of Hampton High and ETSU, he was a professional cook all of his life, beginning his career at Gus's Greek Restaurant, Corpus Christi TX and working at CornerStone (Appalachian Christian Village) when he passed. He will be missed by many co-workers and friends.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturday March 3 th 2018. A service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Michael Rich, Nathan Rankin, Arthur Kennedy, Danny Holden, Melvin Bentley and other family members and friends. Songs will be some of his favorite hymns and service by immediate family.
