Virginia Pearl Buchanan, 96, of Nebo went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. Born in Avery County on Sept. 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elgie Clark and Margaret Bowman Clark. She was a member of River Valley Baptist Church.

Virginia is survived by her children: Jean Crump (Steve) of Lenoir, Wanda Newton (Ray) of Nebo, Milton Buchanan of Nebo, Harriett Yancey (Edward) of Morganton, Gail Henson of Newton, and David Buchanan (Pam) of Morganton; and numerous grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her Husband: Adam Buchanan; and a Son: Reuel Buchanan.

The family received friends from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral was held at 1 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home. Burial followed in River Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

At other times the family will be at the home of the daughter, Wanda Newton.

Betty Jo Clark Berry, 74, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Maggie Cable Clark. Mrs. Berry was a retired textile worker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, McArthur "Mack" Berry, who died July 26, 2015; a daughter, Kathy Slaughter; a sister, Earnestine Tolley; and two brothers, Elmer and Roscoe Clark. Survivors include a daughter, Anita Hathaway, Johnson City; three grandchildren, Amanda and Samantha Hathaway and Sierra Oaks; two great-grandchildren, Travis Bunten and Trinity Hathaway; and three sisters, Bernice Harrell, Manchester, Tenn., Anna Mae Grafton, Leesburg, Fla., and Iva Lee Morgan, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Betty Jo Clark Berry will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 29, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Whitehead officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 1:45 p.m. Friday, October 30, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday, will be Walley Sparks, Cody Granger, John Dunn, Jeff Johnson, Roger Julian and John Perry. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday to go to the cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY - Roxie Dempsey, 91 of Johnson City ,went home to be with her Lord, her beloved husband and the family she missed so much on Friday afternoon from Cornerstone Village.

She was born in Hampton, TN to James Carter Carver and Hettie Elzora Clark Carver. Roxie worked for North American Rayon Corporation for 25 years. She loved her family, music, singing, cooking, gardening and quilting by hand. Roxie was a pastor's wife, and loved her Lord and loved going to church.

In addition to her parents, Roxie was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Edmond Lee Dempsey; brother's Robert, Ralph, Dayton and Frank Carver; sister's Violet Carver, Oleta Gouge and Alma Campbell; Step-daughter, Patricia Satterfield and Barbara Dempsey; grandson, Russell Satterfield.

Survivors include a daughter, Zodie Dempsey; one granddaughter, P.J. Nachman; two great granddaughters, Julie Satterfield, U.S Air Force, Korea, and Kimberly Satterfield, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Satterfield; two great great grandsons, Dean and Ethan Satterfield; one sister, Lena Clark, Adrian, MI. Several nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Dempsey will be condcucted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Elder Gene Kiger officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted following the funeral service at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Elizabeth Shelbiejean Buchanan Crump, 78, of Morganton died Monday, Dec. 30, 2019. Born in Avery County, NC on Feb. 27, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Addie Lafayette Buchanan and Virginia Pearl Clark Buchanan. Jean always put her family first and showed a generous love to all. She was loved by all who knew her. A woman of many talents, she excelled at sewing, cooking, gardening, and soothing babies.

Jean is survived by her Husband of 61 years: Steve Crump; Children: Steve A. Crump and wife, Carol, Karen Sherrill and husband, Eric, Harold Crump, and Sam Crump and wife, Cindy; Grandchildren: Shandara Evans and husband, Michael, Leah Rhodes and husband, Jon, and Dakota Crump and fiancée, Emily Edwards; Great-grandchildren: Americus Evans, Hunter Evans, Eli Evans, and Shelbie Anne Rhodes; and Siblings: Milton Buchanan, David Buchanan, Wanda Newton, Harriet Yancey and Gail Henson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a Grandson: Drew Millwood; and a Brother: Reuel Buchanan.

A native of Hampton, she was a daughter of the late Tilson Lincoln Tolley and Lindie Clark Tolley Vance.
Mrs. Calvin was a homemaker. She was a member of Fairview Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Calvin, and an infant daughter, Bethie Christine McClellan.
Survivors include her children, Windell "J.B." Tolley and Barbara Jean Palin, Linda Mozella Jackson and husband Bobby, Barbara Erlene Grimmett, John Lincoln McClellan and wife Hilda Diane, Timmy Kail McClellan and wife Teresa, and Timmy McClellan and Christie Metcalf; a sister, Ruby Ellison; a brother, Earnest Tolley; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
