UNICOI — Mr. Alvin W. Garland, age 87, of 4612 Unicoi Drive, Unicoi, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at the Center on Aging and Health.

Mr. Garland was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Dave and Joann Slagle Garland. He retired from North American Rayon, where he was a millwright for twenty years. Mr. Garland was a WWII U.S. Army veteran having served in the Southern Philippines.

He was a member of Unicoi Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Mr. Garland was a member of the Unicoi Masonic Lodge #681 F&AM.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lewis and Clyde Garland; and sisters, Daisy Anderson and Charlotte Garland.

Survivors include: His wife of 63 years, Ruby Harrell Garland; Brothers, D.H. Garland and wife, Mildred, and Ralph Garland and wife, Joan, all of Unicoi; Sister, Pansy Wilson, Flint, Michigan; Special nephew, Garland Anderson, Johnson City; Several other nephews and nieces.

Funeral service for Mr. Garland will be held at 8:00 P.M. Friday, April 30, 2010, from the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Garry Edwards will officiate. Eulogy will be given by his brother, D.H. Garland. Music will be provided by Teresa Masters and Inez Chandler. Pallbearers will be Walter Burkett, Mike Hoilman, Ford Wilson, Dean Foster, Scott Dugger and Robert Daniels.

UNICOI - Ralph Charles Garland, age 89, Unicoi, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 10, 2019 while he was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born at his home place in Unicoi County, where he also passed. Ralph lived in Jacksonville, FL for fourteen years before returning to Unicoi County. He was a son of the late David H. and Joann Slagle Garland.

Ralph Garland, A1C was a United States Air Force Veteran having served his country honorably during the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. While he was stationed in England, he met and married the love of his life, Joan Elsie Carter Baxter Garland.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Jacksonville and Centenary United Methodist Church, Erwin. Ralph served as the Superintendent of Sunday School Classes and was very involved in the churches.

Ralph retired from CSX Transportation in 1988 after thirty-three years of service. He calculated the rates for the freight shipments.

He enjoyed Square Dancing and Line Dancing with his beautiful wife. Ralph enjoyed raising a vegetable garden and grew the most delicious tomatoes and corn. He helped build the huge, red family barn which still stands today.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of sixty-four years, Joan Elsie Carter Baxter Garland on February 27, 2019; four brothers: Lewis Garland, Clyde Garland, D.H. Garland and Alvin Garland; three sisters: Charlotte Garland, Daisy Anderson and Pansy Wilson.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his dedicated and loving daughter, Michelle Browning (Robert), Jacksonville; two grandsons: Christopher Browning (Danielle), Jacksonville, Jonathan Browning, Gainsville; three great grandchildren: Mekdes Browning, Daggie Browning and Thea Browning, all of Jacksonville; his first cousin, Garland Anderson, Johnson City; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Jane Taylor will officiate at the 11:00 A.M. celebration of life service on Saturday, March 16, 2019 in the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Military Honors will be rendered by Carter County Honor Guard.

Jane Garland Wright, 87, left this life and gained her citizenship in Heaven on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a very brief illness.

Jane was born on August 16, 1933, and spent her entire life in the Conklin Community. She began school at the age of four at Conklin School, graduated from Washington College Academy at the age of sixteen and from the University of Tennessee at the age of twenty. During her working career she was employed briefly in Kingsport at Tri-City Linen and Uniform, the family business. In 1960 she began her sixty-year career in education. She taught math and science at Lamar High School, then became principal for eighteen years in her home community at West View Elementary, and then eighteen years at Gray Elementary where she loved this community as her own. The last seventeen years have been spent at the Asbury Optional High School remaining there until just three weeks ago. She loved her work and was an inspiration. She loved education, knowledge, working with children, and was proud to be an educator. The difference she made in the lives of so many children over her career will be felt for years. She also loved her home church, Mt. Wesley United Methodist. She was saved at the age of twelve at that church and continued to serve there for the rest of her life, teaching adult Sunday School, assistant piano player, choir member, directing Bible schools and serving as a Trustee of the church. There will be a void. She loved each member of her family immensely, her community, college sports, Major League Baseball, traveling, her flowers, and social gatherings. She loved people. She will be missed!

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, S.V. Wright, Jr., and her mother and father, Cal & Dorothy Garland.

Survivors include son Greg Wright (Nancy), daughters Bebe Street (Marty) and Martha Burleson (Mike); sisters, Ann Banks (Don) and Carolyn McCracken (Larry); grandchildren Ben Wright (Ashley), Garrett Wright (Sydney), Sam Wright, Alex Street (Jill), Roxie Street, Brandon Burleson (Crystal), and Jennifer Burleson; great-grandchildren include Hallie Jane Wright, River Street, Makenzie, Madison, Megan, Catelyn & Michael Burleson; several nieces, nephews, cousins; special friends, GNO’s of Gray, Rebecca Dykes, members of her Sunday School Class, Rose Ellen Thomas and Shane Grubbs.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and CDC guidelines there will not be a formal visitation, but friends and family may come by Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home from 9:00-4:00 PM, Tuesday, February 16, 2021 to pay their respects and sign the register.

Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at New Salem Cemetery. As a result of holding a special place in her heart, her friend, Rev. Jeremy Dykes will be officiating her services.

Pallbearers will be Ben Wright, Garrett Wright, Sam Wright, Alex Street, Steve Wright, Tim Wright, Perry Phillips and Sam Messimer.

JOHNSON CITY - Bill D. Garland, 78, Johnson City, went home to be with our Lord Sunday, February 2, 2020.

A lifelong resident of Johnson City, he was the son of the late Clyde D. Garland and Mary E. Leonard Eggers.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Joyce McKinney Garland, and his brother, Clyde Garland, Jr.

Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughter, Christie Garland Elke (Darrin), of Knoxville, son, Chad Garland (Angela), of Johnson City, sister, Sharon Daniels (Bob), of Unicoi, his precious grandchildren: Colby Baker, Chance Baker (Emily), Kaylee Baker, Seth Garland, Kristin Elke; nieces and nephews: Julie Dugger (Scott) and their son Taw, Josh Daniels (Melanie) and their sons Ivan, Cohen, and Gideon, Cindy Simmons, Debbie Whitson, Greg Winters, and Pam Ward.

Bill was a member and former deacon of Pinecrest Baptist Church. He served on the board at West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department. Bill retired from the Teamsters Local 549 Commercial Truck Driving after 55 years with Mason-Dixon and Henard Metal Fab, Inc. He enjoyed working on his farm, spending time with his grandchildren and friends riding ATV’s.

The family will greet friends to share memories of Bill on Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City. In keeping with Bill’s wishes, he will be cremated.
