Funeral services for Mrs. T. B. Vance, age 81,one of Plumtree's oldest residents, who died at her home Friday morning after a lingering illness were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Plumtree Presbyterian Church. The Rev. T. W. Clapp officiated assisted by the Rev. J. P. Hall. Burial followed in the Yellow Mountain cemetery at Plumtree.
Mrs Vance was a member of the Plumtree Presbyterian church where she joined about 65 years ago and remained an active member until her declining health about two years ago. She was a native and life-long resident of the Plumtree section and attended the old Plumtree Academy. About sixty years ago she was united in marriage to Thomas B. Vance who passed away in 1928. Mrs. Vance was well known throughout Avery and Mitchell counties.
Surviving are one daughter, Miss Ethel Vance of Plumtree six sons, Joe, Ira, and T. B Jr. of Plumtree; Hale of Boone, Pat of Elk Park, and Hobart Vance of Adel, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. D. T. Vance of Plumtree and Mrs. Mannrssa Wiseman of Spoal: three half-sisters; Mrs. Fred Burleson of Spear, Mrs.. Tom Watson of Plumtree and Mrs. Sam Smith of Three Mile; three half-brothers; Will Justice of Spear,. John Justice of Montezumea, and James Gudger Justice of Oregon; 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd F. Wiseman, 92, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 5, 2018, from Lakebridge Health Care Center of Johnson City. Lloyd was born in McDowell County, N.C., to the late Mack C. Wiseman and Edith Dolan Wiseman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Quillen Wiseman, on August 30, 1992.
Lloyd was a loving husband, son and friend, and was a United States Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He retired from Inland Steel Company in East Chicago, Ind., as a supervisor.
Lloyd was a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church, a member of Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679, a member of the Order of Eastern Star #218 in Butler and a York Rite Mason. He loved his church, his wife and his church family and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 25 years, Beulah Harrison Wiseman, of the home; one sister, Edna W. Cooper of Johnson City; one brother, John "JB" Wiseman of Hammond, Ind.; one stepdaughter, Terri James of Johnson City; one stepson, Tim James of Erwin, Tenn.; a stepgranddaughter, Maggie James of Erwin, Tenn.; a stepgrandson, Coleman James of Erwin, Tenn.; two nieces, Jane Ann Williams and Shirley Sutphin, both of Johnson City; and four nephews, Jim Cooper of Johnson City, Johnnie Wiseman of Indiana, Gary Wiseman of Indiana and Kevin Crowe of Elizabethton. Many friends and neighbors also survive.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of Lloyd F. Wiseman will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, November 9, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Darrell Holly, minister, providing the message and Mr. David Seibenaler, minister, providing prayer. Music will be provided by the Cooper Family. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. The committal and entombment will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 10, in the Mausoleum at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jim Cooper, Johnnie Wiseman, Dan Wiseman, Randy English, Terry Williams and Fransco Garland. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and Valley Forge Christian Church.

Lou Martin, 93, of Burleson Road in Plumtree, NC, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2023, at her home.

Born on March 2, 1930 in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Berdie Hamrick Burleson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Martin who passed away in 2013. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Frank Richard Burleson, Al Burleson, Jim Burleson and her grandchildren Brandon Biddix and Elizabeth Knowles.

Lou was a member of the Crossnore Presbyterian Church and she sang in the church choir. She retired from the Avery County School system and spent thirty-five years as an educator. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and also sang in the High Country Chorale Choir.

Lou loved working with plants and flowers and had a green thumb. She also enjoyed sewing and working in crafts and had a collection of tiny, adorable items. She never missed an event of her family members, she enjoyed traveling, the doors of her house were always open for anyone, and she cared for the well-being of animals.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bill Martin of Charlotte, Susy Martin Crouch of Plumtree and Harold Crouch of Salisbury, Melynda Martin Pepple and husband, Doug of Newland, Cindy Martin of Durham and partner, Ben Knowles of Durham, and Robby Martin of Newland; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Lou Martin was held April 1, 2023 at the Crossnore Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kathy Campbell officiating.

Alfred H. Burleson, 82, of Lexington, S.C. passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019, at Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC.

He was born Aug. 6, 1936 in Plumtree, NC to the late Frank and Berdie Burleson. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959 as a mechanic and was a part of the 461st Bombardment Wing. He retired from Honeywell after working more than 30 years for several companies as an in-demand HVAC mechanic repairing large industrial HVAC systems all over the southeast. He utilized his mechanical expertise on his favorite project: creating the cooling unit for the original penguin enclosure at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. He was an enthusiastic model builder, often making parts by hand for model airplanes, boats, and cars.

His beloved wife, Elaine, preceded him in death. They met at Cranberry High School in Avery County, NC and were married for 48 years. Al was also predeceased by his brothers: Jim and Frank Richard Burleson.

He is survived by his Daughters: Patricia Culbreth and Kim Dcosta; Grandchildren: Blair Culbreth and Alex Culbreth; and Sister: Lou Ann Martin.

Beulah ‘Boo Boo’ Wiseman Carpenter, 91, of Little Buck Hill Road in Newland, N.C., the Three Mile community, passed away Monday, August 16, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 11, 1929 in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Jess and Sadie Aldridge Wiseman.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Carpenter, who passed away in 2006. Also preceding her in death was her son, Ned Carpenter; her sisters, Isabelle Ballew, Susie Wiseman, Evelyn Phillips and an infant sister; her brothers, Joe, Ralph, Robert, Mack, and Jesse Tom Wiseman.

Prior to her death, Beulah was the oldest living member of Walnut Grove Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working in her garden and flowers, sewing, and was a bee keeper.

Robert Noyles Wiseman, 80, husband of Millie Garland Wiseman, went to his heavenly home on Monday, August 13, 2018.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Robert was a native of Avery County. He was the son of the late Jesse Wiseman and the late Sadie Aldridge Wiseman.

He was a 1957 graduate of Crossnore High School and served in the United States Army. His career was in the mining industry and worked for 45 years at Feldspar Corporation/Zemex in Spruce Pine. Robert enjoyed playing poker with friends and in local charity events. Robert was commonly known as "Big Opossum." His favorite saying was, "Big Opossums travel late!" He was a storyteller, and his laughter and spirit inspired so many people. Robert was a loving and caring man. He would carry a buckeye in his pocket for good luck, and he always had a spare to share with friends.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his daughter: Robin Wiseman Evans, Son-in-law John C. Evans, and three grandsons: Andrew Evans, Austin Evans, and Johnny Evans of Cary, NC. Sisters: Beaula Carpenter, Betty Thomas (Phil), Emma Boone (Paul). He was preceded in death by his siblings: Joe Wiseman, Beuna (Susie) Wiseman, Isabelle Ballew, Jesse Wiseman, Mack Wiseman, Ralph Wiseman and Evelyn Phillips.

Billy J. Woody, 83, of Ingalls community, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 30, 2022 after an extended illness.
A native of Avery County, he was the son of the late Greenville and Roberta Woody. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Vicky, his son Robert, “Bob,” four sisters, Mable Wiseman, Virginia Curtis, Louise Gouge and Shirley Fulbright; and a brother Robert Woody.
Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shelby “Jean” Love Woody of Ingalls; son, Rodney (Angie); grandson, Aaron Daniels (Feliesha) and great-grandson, Orion. In addition to his immediate family, Bill is survived by his four brothers, Lawrence “Wes,” Scott (Vivian), Casey (Betty) and Tylie (Sandy); brother-in-law, Finley Love, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was a skilled mechanic and business owner in our community with an outgoing personality and infectious laugh that drew all people young and old to the “garage” on the corner, making it the hub of the community for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking as well as spending time telling stories with family.
Bill served honorably in the United States Navy and was an honorary “Golden Shellback”. A Shellback is a sailor who on official duty “crosses the line” of the equator. A “Golden Shellback” is more impressive; it means Bill also crossed the International Date Line.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses of Autumn Care Rehabilitation Center of Marion, NC for caring for Bill and for their kindness to the family during this difficult time.
A celebration of life will be held at Whites Memorial Baptist Church in Ingalls at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12. Pastor Timothy C. Rupard will officiate.

Jean Phillips, 90, of Stonington Lane, Charlotte, N.C., passed away January 16, 2021 after being hospitalized with COVID-19.

She is survived by her son, David Phillips Huskins, and his wife, Betty, of Linville Falls, N.C.; grandson, Jonathan Spear Huskins, of Jefferson, N.C.; great granddaughter, Maddie; great grandson, Hunter; seven nieces and seven nephews, who referred to her affectionately as “Aunté.”

She was pre-deceased by her father and mother, Dr. Edward (Ed) Spear Phillips, Sr., D.V.M., and Florence Mae Silvers Phillips, of the Ingalls Community in Avery County, N.C., where she was raised; four brothers, Ed, Jr., Tom, John Sam and Bill; two sisters, Mary Ella Buchanan and Mildred McKinney; a niece and a nephew.


Locating to Charlotte in 1958 from Columbia, S.C., she was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Co., transferring with the company and retiring after 32 years of service. She was active in the Charlotte area American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) where she provided leadership with the Queen Charlotte Chapter and as a founding/charter member of the Hornet’s Nest Chapter. She also served a term as a multi-state ABWA National District Vice President.

A member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, she was Treasurer of Women’s Circle #6 and assisted with the children’s ministry. Prior to joining Westminster, she was a member of Thomasboro and Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Churches, where she held various leadership roles over a span of 52 years.

Her most noted life accomplishment was raising her only child from birth into adulthood as a single parent.

Dixie Houston Carpenter, 85, of Crossnore, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Heritage Assisted Living in Newland, NC.

Dixie was born May 7, 1938 in Avery County to the late Myrtle and Robert Houston.

Dixie graduated from Cranberry High School in 1956. She retired from Baxter Healthcare. One of her greatest joys in life was teaching Sunday school, which she did for 50 years at Stamey Town Baptist Church where she was a member. She was a lover of animals, reading, cooking, and was a self -declared chocoholic. She was a welcoming and nonjudgmental friend to all, and she was known for her joyful personality and quick wit. She was the epitome of what a Christian should be and practiced what she preached.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Tommy Carpenter of Crossnore; daughters: Christine Calloway (Terry) of Three Mile and Joyce Nations (Tom) of Crossnore; granddaughters: Cailan Calloway (Shawn) of Morganton and Ceara Cuthbertson (Chris) of Morganton; great grandchild, Lola Cuthbertson of Morganton; step grandchildren: Karen Deweese of Clyde, Karla Payne (Matt) of Weaverville, Tommy Nations (Stephanie) of Balsam; step great grandchildren Kailey and Jillian Payne of Weaverville, Lydia and Eden Deweese of Clyde and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Gail McNeil of Morganton, NC, passed away on January 12, 2023.

Born in 1934, she lived 88 wonderful years full of laughter and love. Gail was born in Plumtree, NC to the late Joe and Buena Vance and is survived by her dear sister Joan Hughes. In 1957 she married her beloved husband Jiggs (Lawrence), who predeceased her in 2003.

She taught English for 32 years, the last 20 at Freedom High in Morganton, where she was fondly remembered by her students and fellow faculty members.

Memories of Gail are treasured by her surviving nephew and nieces, their spouses and children, Clayton and Christa Brinkley, Cassie Brinkley, Callie Croley, Shirley Gasque and Peggy Tipton. Her grand-nephews and nieces; Ainsley Hammond, Townsend Wells, Avery Brinkley, Cooper Croley, Davis Croley, and especially grand-niece Emma Brinkley, with whom she shared a special bond.

Gail will be remembered for her wit and wisdom and positive impact on others. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by those whose lives she touched.

Larry was retired due to disability as a Supervisor at Snap-On-Tool. He was of the Baptist Faith. Larry loved to fish and go camping. Buddy Mack Wiseman, 70, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Hermitage Health Center after an extended illness. He was born August 24, 1951 in Carter County to the late Ben and Vera Ward Wiseman.
Buddy was a graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from Snap-On Tools after 34 years of service. He had served in the Tennessee National Guard.
Buddy loved gospel music and playing his guitar and mandolin. He sang with the Sounds of Victory. Buddy attended Sunset Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Proffitt, and three brothers, Hayden, Carroll and Larry Wiseman.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Lenora Hyder Wiseman; two daughters, Kimberly (Mike) Carr, Bluff City, and Michelle (Jeff) Crumley, Butler; a son, Michael (Sandra) Moody, Mountain City; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Judy Harmon, Sugar Grove, N.C.; one brother, Howell (Jackie) Wiseman, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and his sidekick, Prince.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 23, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. Music will be provided by the Sounds of Victory. Born in Avery County on May 10, 1935, she was the daughter of the late James and Lorena Farmer Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband: Frank Ingram who passed away in 1994; and a Brother: Jimmy Taylor.

Shirley was a member of the Buck Hill Presbyterian Church and had served as a Sunday School Teacher. She loved God, her church, and church family and cleaned her church until she was in her eighties. She was also a loving Mother and Grandmother. Shirley worked in many different jobs, including textiles and she loved to work outdoors. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, was an avid reader and loved writing poetry.

Robert Clay Wiseman, 71, of Newland passed into the eternal light and love of his Heavenly Father on October 25, 2018. Robert passed peacefully at his home surrounded by those he loved most.

He dealt with this most challenging illness in his true form of courage and firm faith in God.

To mourn his passing, he leaves his Son: Bill; future Daughter-in-Law: Bonnie Wilkinson; Sister: Doris Boulton; Niece: Caroline Fernandez; plus a host of friends and cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Lilly; daughter: Bonnie; second wife; Donna; brother-in-law: Jerry Boulton; and his parents: Helen and Clay Wiseman. Robert was baptized and grew under the auspices of Plumtree Presbyterian Church and the tutelage of Pastor T.W. Clapp., where he remained a member until his death.

Robert attended Avery County Schools, Lees-McRae College, and East Tennessee State University, where his studies were interrupted by a call to serve his country in Viet Nam. Robert served his country in Viet Nam as Ranger with the 173rd Airborne Division in some of the fiercest fighting in the jungles around Ben Hoa as leader of a seven-man Reconnaissance Team. He was the sole survivor. Far from being resentful, Robert remained active with the local Veterans of Foreign War with Post 4286.

Returning to East Tennessee State after service to his country, he received his degree in Business Management. In 1973 he was hired by Avery County as Budget Director. This title was later changed to County Manager.

After working with Avery County the first time, Wiseman went to Seven Devils as Town Manager. In 1980, he went to work as Director of Business Management at Black Mountain Center for Mental Disabilities and Substance Abuse. He was later promoted to director at the Junior Evaluation Center in Swannanoa.

In 1999, Robert went to Spruce Pine as Town Manager for five years, then as Mitchell County Manager for five years. In all, Wiseman had more than 25 years of experience in state, county and municipal government and public service. In 2002, he returned home to Avery County as County Manager.

His heart was always with the people and government of his home county. He truly loved each he served. Throughout his years of service Robert gained and continued to possess an intimate knowledge of the socio-economic demographics of Avery County, as well as the educational and geographical makeup. Robert has proven himself a true hero not only to his country, but to his community and family alike.

Robert's family would like to thank the Staff of Medi Home Hospice, with special thanks to Lareeca, Cindy, Jessica, Brinkley, Diane, Mary and Hannah.
