MRS. JAMES STOUT
Mrs. James Stout, widow of the late Rev. James Stout, Baptist minister of Carter County, died in Birmingham, Ala., Thursday afternoon after a lingering illness. Mrs. Stout had made her home with a daughter in Alabama for a number of years. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Grace Clemens of Beckley, West Virginia, Mrs. H. R. Freeman of Maryland, Mrs. O. D. Rodby of Birmingham, Ala.; three sons, B. F. Stout of Beckley, West Virginia, Earl and James Stout of Beckley, West Virginia; four sisters, Mrs. Carl Swift of Texas, Mrs. Roy Hagerman of North Carolina, Mrs. Smith Milsaps of Georgia, Mrs. Ed Williams of North Carolina.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at the chapel of the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. Rigell, pastor of the Central Baptist Church in Johnson City officiating. Burial will be made to Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Music will be in charge of Miss Ruth Scott.

William Ford Jones, 91, of Elk Park, NC, closed his eyes to this life and opened them in the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Life Care Center, Banner Elk. Ford joined his beloved wife of 69 years, Edith Clawson Jones. Born July 24, 1932, to the late Clyde and Junie Jones, he was the fourth of 11 children.

A lifelong member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church where he served for many years as deacon. After losing most of his vision to AMD he attended the Elk Park Christian Church. Ford was a longtime member of the Cranberry Masonic Lodge where he served in various capacities including past master. Ford loved to work and no job was considered too hard! Working in Michigan in the early and mid-50s he later moved back to Avery County and worked at The Cranberry Mines, Sugar Mountain Road Crew, Motor Grader operator for the NCDOT. After retiring he worked for Laws and Laws Brothers Construction. After retiring the second time, he worked for the Avery County Solid Waste, Banner Elk site.

Ford is survived by daughters, Deborah Jones of Banner Elk, NC and Diann Harris and husband Greg of Elk Park ,NC; Grandchildren James Erwin of Minneapolis, NC, Callie Sheppard and husband, Jonathan, of Elk Park, NC and their dad, Jim Erwin. Bonus grandchildren Job and Brooke Harris; great grandchildren, Quentin Cooper and Lily Nenninger. One sister, Mable Shook and husband, Bradley. Two brothers in law, Clifford Gobble and Johnny Bradshaw. A host of nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends, as he never met a stranger. He always had a big smile and words of encouragement to anyone he met.

Ford was preceded in death, in addition to his wife and parents, by sisters, Myrtle Gobble, Faye Bradshaw, Lucille and Verna Grace Jones, and brothers, Vance, Orville, Rex, Paul and Clyde Lee Jones.

A good man who loved the Lord, his family and everyone he met, he always said the most important thing a person can do is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and do good to our fellow man. He did both very well.

The family wishes to say a heartfelt thank you to Dr. David Kimmel, Dottie Wiseman, the staff of Elk River Medical Associates, the staff at Life Care Center of Banner Elk and the staff of Medi-Home Hospice. There are too many people to mention individually, but God has placed so many people in our path and we will never forget the love, support and kindness shown to our family over the past years.

A graveside service for Ford was held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, with Jonathan Sheppard officiating.

Myrtle Irene Jones Gobble, 75, of Gray, Tenn., formerly of Hampton, earned her Angel wings on Thursday, May 23, 2019, from Franklin Woods Community Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Myrtle was born in Boone, N.C., to the late Clyde and June Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Vance Jones, Rex Jones, Orville Jones, Paul Jones and Clyde Lee Jones, and three sisters, Faye Bradshaw, Verna Grace Jones and Lucille Jones.
Myrtle was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She liked her naps and spent most of her life caring for her daughter, Angela. Myrtle was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church and had worked at Celebrating Home as an independent distributor. She liked to cook, garden, play with her grandchildren and sell candles.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Clifford Gobble, of the home; a son, Ronnie Gobble of Gray; a daughter, Angela Marie Gobble "Buggie," of the home; two granddaughters, Jessica Byers of Elizabethton and Sierra Gobble of Piney Flats; her great-grandchildren, Skyler and Nathan Holly, CJ and Mason Younce, Trenton Mack Nelson, Liam Byers and Witten Nash; a brother, Ford Jones (Edith) of Elk Park, N.C.; and a sister, Mabel Shook (Bradley) of Pigeon Roost, N.C. Several special nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Myrtle Irene Jones Gobble will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Ronnie Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Phil Shook, Greg Harris, Skyler Holly, Aaron Cornelison, Chris Morgan and Lonnie Bullins. Johnny Bradshaw will serve as honorary pallbearer. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, following the service to go in procession to the cemetery. Clara Kathleen Shook, 77, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Avery County, N.C., she moved to Elizabethton in 1979 from Columbus, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Donald Jones and Ina Beulah Oaks Jones.
Clara retired as a housekeeper from Colonial Hills Nursing Home and she had been a private caregiver. She attended Calvary Baptist Church. She was a giving person who loved to do for others. She enjoyed cooking, walks at Sycamore Shoals State Park and loved working in her flower garden. Clara loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Edward Jones, George Jones, Willie Jones and Gurney Jones, and sisters, Vertie Taylor and Eula Carver.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Janet Shook, Elizabethton, and Bonnie Tunnell, Johnson City; two sons, Alvin Shook and Kenny Shook, both of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Miranda Anderson, Jesse Deloach, Kara Short, Austin Hyder and Evan Tunnell; six great-grandchildren, Charles Scalf, Joshua Feathers, Skyler Deloach, Savannah Reece, Kristal Anderson and Jamie Anderson; a brother, Wade Jones, Elizabethton; and a sister, Estel Smith, Elizabethton Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Michael Daniel Jones, age 63, of the Heaton Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at Life Care of Banner Elk.

He was a son of the late Dayton Newland and Oda McGuire Jones. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Geneva Jones Henson, Della Jones Ingram, Willa Jones Bunting, Sherrill Jones and Evelyn McCoury Dunn. Michael, or Mike, as he liked to be called, trusted in the Lord and adored his church family at Heaton Christian Church. He amazed everyone with his photographic memory, knowledge of history and knack for predicting the weather. Mike will be remembered as a loving and caring person with a good personality and positive attitude. He never had a complaint! Mike loved helping his family and never failed to express to others how much he appreciated them.

Mike is survived by siblings: Mary Alice Parlier of Elk Park, Rachel Jones of the home and Richard Jones and his wife, Alma, of Newland; special niece: Tina Ingram of Elk Park and a sister-in-law: Angela Jones of Roan Mountain, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as his many friends and church family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, in Heaton Christian Church. Pastor Paul Cole will officiate. Burial will follow in the Beech Mountain Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church.

Vera married Billie Jack Glover about 1949. Vivian A. Schackow, 88, of Mackinaw, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at Unity Point Methodist Hospital in Peoria. Vivian was born Aug. 27, 1931, in Elk Park, NC to Hobert and Fairy Jones Church. She married Robert E. Schackow. He preceded her in death July 10, 2009. Also preceding her in death were her Parents; two Sisters: Nadine and Joyce; and one Brother: Ross.

Vivian is survived by eight Children: Sherry (Bill) Olson of Peoria, Marcia Ashley of Peoria, Rose (Dan) Hoffman of Metamora, Christina (Mark) Fadele of Lockport, NY, Robert Schackow Jr. of Lacon, Alan (Guylene) Schackow of Marquette Heights, Daniel Schackow of Peoria, Mark Schackow of Mackinaw; 22 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren; three Brothers: Dale (Jeanette) Church of Kernersville, NC, Hobart (Elsie) Church Jr. of Elk Park, NC, and Lowell (Anita) Church of Elk Park, NC.

Vivian retired from Illinois Central College. She was a member of Harvest Baptist Temple in Mackinaw.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at Harvest Baptist Temple in Mackinaw. The Rev. Tim Severt officiated. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, and 30 minutes prior to services on Saturday at Harvest Baptist Temple. Haensel Funeral Home in Mackinaw is assisting the family with arrangements. Burial was held at Mackinaw Township Cemetery.

Elbert Ross Church, age 85, of Newland, NC passed away on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC.

He was born on Feb. 5, 1934, in Avery County, NC, a son of the late Hobert Church and the late Fairy Jones Church.

Ross was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Signal Corps. He began his career with the North Carolina Department of Corrections in Ashe County and retired as the Superintendent of the Avery County Correctional Facility. A faithful Christian, he was a member and Deacon of the Sugar Mountain Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two Sisters: Nadine Glover and Joyce Reece.

Ross was loving husband, father, and grandfather who truly cherished every minute with his family and friends. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his Wife of 54 years: Billie Banner Church of Newland, NC; Son: Lynn (Melissa) Church of Newland, NC; Grandson: Ethan Ross Church of Newland, NC; Grandson: Eli Justin Church of Newland, NC; Sister: Vivian Schackow of Peoria, Ill.; Brother: Dale (Jeanette) Church of Kernersville, NC; Brother: Hobert (Elsie) Church, Jr. of Elk Park, NC; Brother: Lowell (Anita) Church of Elk Park, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services for Elbert Ross Church will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, from the Sugar Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Heinz, Rev. Don Ford, Rev. David Burnop, and Rev. Josh Calvert officiating. Interment will follow in the Fall Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Grant Gibson, Greg Gibson, Blake Banner, Brent Banner, Toby Church, Chris Church, Lance Wright and Mark Parlier.

Kenny Ray Shook, 51, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was the son of the late Winford Wilson and Clara Kathleen Jones Shook.
Kenny loved to attend NASCAR races at Bristol Motor Speedway and enjoyed listening to music by Ralph Stanley and Elvis Presley. Kenny loved to go to church and spend time with his family and friends. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing games on his Xbox. Kenny was a member of First Baptist Church of Church Hill, Tenn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncles, Edward Jones, George Jones, Willie Jones and Gurney Jones; two aunts, Vertie Taylor and Eula Carver; and a nephew, Jesse Deloach.
Those left to cherish his memories are his two sisters, Bonnie Tunnell of Gray and Janet Shook of Elizabethton; a brother, Alvin Shook of Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews.
