M. C. Renfro, age 76, died at his home on the old Johnson City highway, Wednesday afternoon at six o'clock. Death was sudden. Mr. Renfro was a merchant. He had been located in Carter county for the past nineteen years, was a member of the Watauga Point Methodist Church. Mrs. Renfro preceded him in death three years ago.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Charles Parnell, Spruce Pine, N. C., Mrs. Cora McCurry, Johnson City, route 5, five sons, David of Johnson City, Homer of Elizabethton, R. H. of Erwin, John, of Spartanburg, S. C., Luther, Green Mt., N. C.; two brothers, Dock Renfro, and John Renfro of North Carolina, twenty grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Centenary Methodist church at Erwin, Friday morning at 10 o'clock with the Rev. I. G. Crowder officiating, assisted by Rev. Jay B. Osborne. Burial will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery at Erwin. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Paul D. Renfro, 85, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Paul was born in Elizabethton to the late David and Gladys Street Renfro.

Paul practiced Pharmacy for 50 years. He started three local businesses: Corner Drug, West Towne Pharmacy and Princeton Drug. He was a Specialist 5th Class US Army veteran, having served from 1953-1956, during the Korean conflict. Paul was an avid Cardinals baseball fan, mainly because he was named after Paul Dean, the pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals the year they won the World Series, in 1934, the day Paul was born. He was a member of The Gideons International, First District Pharmaceutical Association and Tennessee Pharmaceutical Association. He was a past member of Pinecrest Baptist Church and a present member of Grace Baptist Church, where he was a choir director for many years.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by: his wife of 59 years, Helen Jean Renfro, in 2015; and one brother-in-law, Jerome Christian.

Survivors include: two sons, Larry S. Renfro and his wife Sherri and Lee Scott Renfro and his wife Martha; four granddaughters, Hannah Moore and her husband Nick, Sarah Renfro, Megan Renfro and Alyson Renfro; two brothers, David Lee Renfro, Jr. and his wife Janice and Richard "Dickie" Renfro and his wife Sheila; two sisters, Jane Christian and Janet Grant and her husband Robert; and several nieces.

The family would like to sincerely thank Joyce Gillette for the care she provided to Paul for the last few years.

John Mack Renfro, born on September 21, 1936 to Robert Hubert Renfro and Carrie Davis Renfro, lived at 236 N. Elm Street in Erwin, TN from birth until he joined the US Marine Corps in September, 1954.

As an active and curious boy who valued participation, John spent his childhood at the Erwin YMCA, First Baptist Church, Unicoi County High School, and Boy Scouts where he excelled at activities as diverse as basketball, Glee Club, bowling, drums and camping.

He excelled at learning how machines worked and how to fix them. His father owned Liberty Lumber & Manufacturing, and the tinsmith there taught him how to work with sheet metal. Friends and family have fond memories of John and his close childhood friend Joe Reeves rebuilding a T-Model Ford learning to fabricate parts and other skills that he would later use during his 30+ year career designing, implementing, and managing maintenance programs at E. I. DuPont. The inaugural test drive of the old buggy was of mixed results: "A drive to Myrtle Beach, NC and a push back from NC."

John joined the US Marine Corp in 1954 and spent much of his time in training on ships and at bases throughout the Caribbean and Europe. During a short break between basic training and base assignment he

married his childhood sweetheart, Audree Hope McFarland.

After his tour of duty, while working as a machinist's apprentice in Erwin, he decided on a career path as a Mechanical Engineer. After graduating from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (Tennessee Tech) in Cookeville, TN John immediately went to work for DuPont in Aiken, SC. Working on the Savannah River project, and then moved to Parkersburg WV to work at the Washington Works facility in the Teflon division. Before retiring in 1999 he traveled around the country as a Management & Maintenance Practices specialist for DuPont.

John and Audree raised four sons, Richard Mark, Robert Michael, Ronald Marshall, and Russell Matthew.

An active outdoor enthusiast John taught his family and any friend who cared to learn how to water ski. John started a water ski club and wrote the curriculum and qualification standards for what was to become the Water Skiing Merit Badge for the Boy Scouts. His sons were the first recipients of this newly minted merit badge. He was also very involved at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Rotary International, and he served on various area boards including the Parkersburg Airport Authority.

John and Audree divorced in November, 1980. In 1982, John married Dorothy Epler Burnside of Parkersburg, WV and gained two wonderful step children, Douglas Epler Burnside and Hannah Elizabeth 'Betsy' Burnside-McDonald, both of whom John loved, adored, and raised as his own. And yes, taught to ski!

In 2002, John and Dorothy moved to Melbourne, FL to live closer to his sons and allow Dorothy a little sunshine and warmth in their retirement. They attended Suntree United Methodist Church. On

September 15, 2011 Dorothy passed away leaving John a widower and shortly thereafter his struggle with Alzheimer's began.

After their spouses had passed away, John and Audree reconnected through their children and began a new chapter in their lives. Though his struggles with Alzheimer's deepened over the following years, so did the

love and affection that previously defined this amazing relationship. Audree provided emotional caregiving to her first love in what can only be described in a storybook way.

John passed peacefully in his room at Autumn House, a wonderful and loving memory care facility in Viera, FL on Monday January 23, 2017.

John is pre-deceased by two older brothers, Robert Stark Renfro and Charles Hubert Renfro, and a half-sister Julia Renfro. He was adored and respected by his parents, siblings, wives, sons, daughter-in-laws, stepchildren,

grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends, fellow Marines, neighbors, co-workers, and church friends in a life that spanned one career, two and a half marriages, two families, four states, and left a wake of love in its path.

We love you John Mack, Johnny Mack, John, Dad, Grand John.

A Memorial service will be held February 18th 4:30 PM at River Run Christian Church, located at 1660 Croton Road, Melbourne, FL.

Virginia "Toots" Renfro Peterson, 85, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at her daughter's home, where she had lived for a little over a year.

She was a native of Yancey County, North Carolina, and a daughter of the late Tilmon and Alma Renfro.

Toots worked very hard raising her family and loved them dearly. She also worked very hard in her earlier years in the gardens and tobacco fields; she loved chewing her tobacco.

She was a member of Berea Free Will Baptist Church, where she enjoyed attending service and fellowship with her Christian family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: her husband, John Peterson; eight siblings; and two grandchildren, April Douglas and Triston Madore.

Survivors include: her children, Judy Smith, Debbie Day and husband David, Patsy Lowery and husband Cheyenne, Timmy Peterson and wife Diana; seventeen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

ERWIN---The Reverend Arthur Renfro, age 76, 135 Scalf Road, Chuckey, Tenn., went home Sunday morning.
He was the son of the late Dewey Lattie Renfro and Mary Lee Coffey Renfro of Erwin.
In the early 1950s, he served in the U.S. Navy. A well-known pastor and evangelist for the past 43 years, the Rev. Renfro served as pastor of Cherry Hill F.W.B. Church, Limestone; Roan Street F.W.B. Church, Elizabethton; Lowes Chapel F.W.B. Church, Newport; Liberty F.W.B. Church, of the South Central Community; and Friendship F.W.B. Church, Pell City, Ala.
In addition to his parents, the Rev. Renfro was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Freeman, of Jonesborough, and Lucille Ray, of Travelers Rest, S.C.
The Reverend Renfro is survived by his partner, friend, and wife of 54 years, Vivian Renfro, of the home; two daughters, Joan and her husband, John Stuart, Chuckey, Tenn., and Janet and her husband, Billy Osborne, Pell City, Ala.; two sons, Daryl and wife, Janie Renfro, Chuckey, Tenn., and Lee and wife, Patty Renfro, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four sisters, Anna Mae Tittle, Emma Jean Fowler, Marie Tittle, and Carolyn Haines, all of Erwin; one brother, J.C. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 7, 2007, from 6 - 9 p.m. in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home.
A Home Going Celebration will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in Liberty F.W.B. Church, South Central Community. Rev. Renfro will lie in state one hour prior to service.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Bible, the Rev. Richard Tittle, the Rev. Gary Norton, and the Rev. Anthony Payne. Music will be provided by Andrew Landers, Gena Martin, and Sheila Balch.
The final resting place will be the Bethesda Church Cemetery, Jonesborough, and will follow Home Going Celebration. Pallbearers will be selected from the grandsons, nephew, and special friends of the church.

Emma Jean Renfro Fowler was born March 19 to the late Mary Coffie Renfro and Dewey Renfro. Emma Jean’s mother Mary raised her and her 7 siblings with a strong faith in God and unwavering love. She inherited her mother’s strong work ethic, faith and determination. Emma Jean was a Navy wife for 23 years living mostly along the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf of Mexico. After her husband’s retirement from the Navy they moved the family back to their original home town of Erwin in 1976. Shortly after, she began working for Texas Instruments/Siemens/Epic in Johnson City where she retired after 31 years of service. Emma Jean devoted her entire life to providing a loving home for her children and grandchildren to visit. She loved to read, travel and cook and was known for her amazing Chicken N Dumplings. She loved holidays, especially Christmas, preparing candies and wrapping gifts in anticipation of having her whole family home with her. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren. She took great pride in being their biggest fan in all of the sports and events they participated in throughout high school and college. She enjoyed watching the hummingbirds from her front porch. Every day with her was a precious gift we will cherish. We have been so blessed to have called her ours.

Emma Jean is preceded in death by her brothers; Arthur Renfro and J.C. Renfro: Sisters; Lucille Ray (Stuart), Virgie Freeman (Stanley) and Anna Mae Tittle (Ike): Brother-In-Law; Jim Tittle.

Emma Jean is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Scott Fowler, Erwin TN. Daughter’s; Teresa Hulbert and husband Mike (Orlando, FL), Carol Fowler (Erwin TN) and Cheryl Wright and husband Glenn (Erwin TN). Grandchildren; Justin Hulbert, Lexie Wright Doan (Jared), Trevor Hulbert and Taylor Wright. Sisters; Marie Tittle and Carolyn Haines (Tex), sister-in-law; Vivian Renfro. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burdette Renfro went home to be with the Lord December 30,2017, at Cornerstone Village of Johnson City after a short illness.

Burdette was born September 23, 1930 to the late Glen, and Mae McKinney Renfro. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert, and half-sister, Jewell Renfro McKinney.

Burdette worked in sales most of his adult life with Rainbo Bakery, Moore's Potato Chips, and retired from Kern's Bakery. He was a faithful member of Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church of Johnson City, where he served as an usher. He also served as a Deacon at other former churches, and was a 50-year member of the Johnson City Masonic Lodge #486. Burdette enjoyed spending time tending to the flowers in his garden.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2017, at 8:00 pm, at Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 1004 East Lakeview Drive, Johnson City, TN 37601. Pastor Paul Crowe and Reverend Howard Ray will officiate, with music provided by the Quillen family. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Thursday from 6:00 pm until the time of service. Committal services will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City on Friday, January 5th, at 1:00 pm. Pallbearers will be Terry Bennett, Ken Geisler, Vernon Smith, Bill Campbell, Josh Hinkle, and Phil Hill, with honorary pallbearers being Butch Buck and David Cretzinger.

ERWIN - Gary Wayne Edwards, Sr., age 77, Erwin, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at his home. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, family, and caregivers who he called dear friends. He was born on April 7, 1946, in Johnson City, Tennessee. Gary is the son of late Ray and Kathleen Angel Edwards. In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his brother Brian Keith Edwards of Erwin, TN.

Gary was a devoted Christian, husband, father, papaw, and leader in the community throughout his life. He was a member of Rock Creek Presbyterian Church where he loved to go worship the Lord on Sunday mornings with his church family. Gary enjoyed studying government policies and loved talking to everyone in the community. He always would use his humor to tell jokes to make everyone feel welcome around him. He served as the Town of Erwin Alderman and vice mayor where he was awarded a plaque with the key to the city for his years of service and dedication to the community members. Gary Wayne Edwards Senior served as alderman on the Utility Board, the Town of Erwin Zoning Board, and the Beverage Board from 2006 to 2020. He retired as plant manager from Tennessee Abrasives in Erwin, TN.

Gary loves his Boston Terrier dogs dearly. He always kept them by his side throughout each phase of his life. He would sneak whatever he was eating under the table to them. Anyone that would visit could always find an extra dog bone around the house, especially in his chair. He always said his way of honoring his dogs was to rescue another one and make sure they were spoiled.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the following health care organizations and staff members for supporting Gary in each step of his health journey and always being there for his family: Unicoi County Hospital, Unicoi County Emergency Medical Services, Hospice Care by Amedisys, and Christian Care Center of Unicoi County.

The family is especially grateful to Becky Allen from Hospice Care by Amedisys, Jerome Jackson, and Nancy King for their dedication, love and care given to Gary during his sickness. The family is thankful knowing that all of them cared for him up to his final moments. This has given the family much needed peace.

The family respectfully requests the honor or your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Gary Wayne Edwards, Sr. A funeral service to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21, in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 5 p.m. and will continue until service time at Valley Funeral Home. Chris Edmonds along with Reverend Andy Blackwelder and Lay Minster John Catts will officiate the 7:00 p.m. service. Special singing will be from Carrie Tipton and Nancy King. A graveside committal service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Evergreen Cemetery. Everyone is asked to meet at the Valley Funeral Home by 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery. Chris Edmonds will officiate the graveside service. Pallbearers will be Gary Wayne Edwards Jr., Dusty Edwards, Justin Oldaker, Keith Ayers, Ken Edmonds, Kenneth Edmonds, Steven Edmonds, Aaron Toney, and Eric Cooper. Honorary Pallbearers are Danny Ayers and Barry Griffith.

Brian Keith Edwards, age 56, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2020 at his home. A native of Erwin, Keith is a son of the late Ray and Kathleen (Angel) Edwards.

He was a 21 year veteran of the Erwin Police Department where he served as Assistant Police Chief. He was also a Private Investigator, Firefighter, member of the Erwin SWAT Team, Unicoi County Rescue Squad and served 16 years as a Tactical Police Officer for Nuclear Fuel Services. Keith was a 2nd degree Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and a competition pistol shooter. He held several marksmanship awards and National Championship Shooter awards. He enjoyed riding his Harley and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.

A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday, September 11, 2020 and will continue until service time in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 in Evergreen Cemetery. Those attending will meet at Valley Funeral Home by 9:30 am to go in procession to the cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Joshua Ricker, Jason Huskins, Allen Pennington, Craig Anspaugh, Josh Payne, Ron Widener, Brent Miller, Paul Kerr, Chris Nelson, Daniel Bowman, Dewayne Hensley, Wayne Edwards, Dylan Brown and Terry Cox. Anyone who rode motorcycles with Keith are asked to ride them to the cemetery.

Dr. Kevin James "Niner" Renfro, age 49, went to be with His Lord, Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 5, 2018.

Kevin is survived by his parents James "Ronnie" Renfro and Barbara Forry Renfro; his wife Donna Renfro; his son Micah James Renfro and wife Sierra Danielle Renfro, and daughter Miranda Audrey-Ruth Renfro Taylor and husband Brandon Edward Taylor; his granddaughter Raelynn Elizabeth Taylor; his sisters Kimberly Renfro Evans and Kasey Renfro Archer and their husbands James Evans, and Stephen Archer; his father and mother in law John and Dava Lee Russell; his sister and brother-in-law David and Ginger Christian; his nieces and nephews Julia Barlow, Joshua Christian, Logan Archer, Lyndsey Evans, and Landon Archer.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Oscar and Audrey Renfro and Irwin "Bud" Forry and Bernice Forry.

Dr. Kevin Renfro earned multiple degrees including a bachelor degree from E.T.S.U. where he also played baseball. He furthered his education by completing a Master of Biblical Studies and Doctorate of Biblical Counseling. He worked for Superior Industries as a maintenance foreman and OSHA safety coordinator. Additionally, he faithfully served his family, church, and community. Kevin's priorities were God, his family, and then his church. He strived for excellence in everything he did, being the best husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather. Baseball was Kevin's passion from an early age, excelling in sports as a competitive athlete, holding the number two batting average in the state of Tennessee while in high school.
