    MRS. BARBARA ELLA BOWERS
    Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Ella Bowers, 84, well known resident of Carter County, who died Wednesday morning at the home of her grandson, Bruce Bowers, at Charity Hill, were conducted this afternoon at 2:30 at the home. The Rev. Clarence Howington of the Freewill Baptist Church officiated, assisted by Judge W. R. Allen and the Rev. H. C. Hopkins. Interment was in the Bowers Cemetery.
    The deceased was a descendant of one of Carter County's oldest families, the daughter of the late Capt. Dan Ellis. She was married to Val B. Bowers who died twenty years ago yesterday.
    Surviving are one brother, U. S. G. Ellis; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Bowers and Mrs. H. H. Smith; also fourteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
    Pallbearers were Wesley Ellis, Clyde Nave, Paul Hendricks, Kyle Heaton, Granville Nave and Bob Treadway.
    Flower bearers were Mrs. Phoebe Smith, Mrs. Kyle Heaton, Mrs. Frank Ellis, Mrs. Bob Nave, Mrs. Eugene Chambers, Mrs. Mack Chambers, Mrs. C. E. Treadway, Mrs. Harry Missimer, Mrs. G. O. Collins, Mrs. B. F. Treadway, Mrs. Wesley Ellis, Mrs. Herman Lovelace and Mrs. Hazel Ellis.
    Mrs. Clarence Howington was in charge of the singing.

    Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis Hathaway, 73, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy P. Bowers, Bristol, Va., at 4:30 this morning. Surviving are Mrs. Roy P. Bowers, Mrs. Manley Oaks, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Mrs. Harry Greer, Miami, Fla., Mrs. Harry Missimer, Elizabethton, Mrs. Lee Disch, Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. Ernest Headen, Williamson, W. Va., all daughters; and the sons, G. H. Hathaway, Appalachia, Va., C. R. Hathaway, Elizabethton, E. E. Hathaway, Elizabethton, O. C. Hathaway, Shreveport, La., Walter Hathaway, Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Sis Bowers, Mrs. U. S. G. Ellis, both of Elizabethton; and one brother, Daniel Ellis, Jellico, Tenn.
    The body will be taken this afternoon to the home of Mrs. E. E. Hathaway, 510 Maple street.
    Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

    FUNERAL WILL OCCUR FRIDAY
    Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis Hathaway, well known woman of Carter county, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy B. Bowers, in Bristol, Va. Tuesday morning at 4:30, will be conducted from the home of her son, E. E. Hathaway, 510 Maple street Friday afternoon at 3:30 with the Rev. Ed Bishop of Greeneville, officiating, assisted by the Rev. G. W. Matney, the Rev. W. F. Pitts, and the Rev. C. L. Bowden of this city. Interment will be made in Highland Cemetery.
    The deceased was a descendent of one of Carter county's oldest families, being the daughter of the late Capt. Dan Ellis of Civil war fame. She was born in 1861 and was a native of Carter county. Practically all her life was spent in and around Hampton. She was married to John W. Hathaway, who passed away 32 years prior to the day that Mrs. Hathaway died.
    Mrs. Hathaway's death came quite unexpectedly having been stricken with what they thought only a minor illness Sunday evening. Tuesday morning members of the family were called but before they could arrive she passed away.
    Early in life, Mrs. Hathaway united with the M. E. church and throughout her life she remained faithful to her vows. She has led a very active life and her cheerful nature endeared her to hundreds of friends over Carter county and in Bristol which she had created because of her kind and loving nature.
    For the past 12 or 15 years she had made her home principally in Bristol with her daughter, Mrs. Roy Bowers and had just returned to Bristol from a visit with her sons and daughter in this city last week.
    Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Roy B. Bowers, Bristol, Va., Mrs. Manley Oaks, Ft. Leavenworth, Kans.; Mrs. Harry Frear, Miami, Fla.; Mrs. Lee Desch, Harrisburg, Pa.; Mrs. Ernest Headon, Williamson, West Va.; five sons, G. H. Hathaway, Derby, Va.; Major C. R. Hathaway and E. E. Hathaway, Elizabethton, O. C. Hathaway, Shreveport, La.; Walter Hathaway, Hampton; one sister, Mrs. Sis Bowers, Elizabethton; two brothers, Daniel Ellis, Jellico and U. S. G. Ellis, Elizabethton. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    Pallbearers will include grandsons and son-in-laws and are Roy B. Bowers, Jr., Capt. Harry Hathaway, Mayor Fred Hathaway, John Hathaway, Harry Missimer, and Roy B. Bowers, Sr.
    Flower bearers will include Mrs. Maude Elliott, Mrs. Mary Mottern, Mrs. Walter Grindstaff, Mrs. John Nave, Mrs. Mayme Wilcox Ferguson, Mrs. Albert Hathaway, Mrs. Hazel Smith, Mrs. Roy Wilcox, Mrs. Walter Brumit, Mrs. Chas. Hampton, Misses Sarah Crowe, Gladys Pitts, Helen Dugger and Edith Dugger.
    All members of the family from out of town have arrived for the funeral.

    BOWERS RITES ON SATURDAY
    Robert T. Bowers, 49 years of age, Charity Hill community, died yesterday at 3 p.m., from gangrene poisoning caused by the bursting of his appendix, at the Goss Hospital, Johnson City.
    Funeral services for Bowers are to be held at the Charity Hill Baptist Church Saturday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Clarence Howington and Judge W. R. Allen in charge. Interment is to be in the Bowers Cemetery in that community.
    The deceased has been a life long resident of Carter County. He was taken from the Bemberg plant suffering from an acute attack of appendicitis about 1 o'clock last Saturday. He was operated on soon after reaching the hospital, but the appendix had already bursted[sic] and the poison had spread over the system.
    Bowers was a very active member of the local chapter of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. He has a large number of relatives in Carter County and was very popular in the community in which he lived.

    Frank L. Ellis, 55, died suddenly of a heart attack Friday, November 19, at his home in Charity Hill.
    He was an employee of the American Bemberg Corp. and a member of the Free Will Baptist church of Charity Hill.
    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Mae Ellis; one daughter, Nadine; one brother, Wesley Ellis; four sisters, Mrs. J. C. Heaton, Mrs. W. H. Lovelace, Mrs. K. S. Garrison, Mrs. Lucy Snodgrass; and a number of nephews and nieces.
    Funeral services will be held at the Charity Hill Free Will Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with the Rev. J. C. Howington and the Rev. Broyles in charge. Burial will be made in the Ellis Cemetery.

A native of Carter County, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late D.M. Chambers Sr. and Martha Ellis Chambers. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class of the church. Mrs. Williams was a sustaining member of the Johnson City Junior League. Her husband, Bailey E. Williams Jr., preceded her in death in 1985. She was also preceded in death by one brother, D.M. Chambers Jr.; and three sisters, Myrtle C. Grindstaff, Vorita Chambers Isaacs and Florence “Jack” Chambers Smith. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Moore and husband, Dwight, of Gray, and Lisa Pendleton and husband, Dave, of Kingsport; one sister, Katharyn C. Noble, of Johnson City; grandchildren, Mark E. Moore, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lauren K. Pendleton, of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Mrs. Williams will be held Thursday, September 9, 2004, at 11:00 A.M. from Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Garland Thayer officiating.

    A native of Carter County, TN, she was a daughter of the late D.M. Chambers Sr. and Martha Evelyn Ellis Chambers. Mrs. Noble was member of East Unaka Christian Church.

    She is preceded in death by her husband, A.P Noble, in 1975; four sisters, Vorita Chambers Isaacs, Myrtle Chambers Grindstaff, Florence "Jack" Chambers Smith, Jean Chambers Williams; one brother, D.M. Chambers Jr.

    Survivors include a step-daughter, Carol Braum and husband, Dick, Miami, FL; three step grandchildren; six nieces, Martha Nell Smith Estes, Joan Smith McQueen, Suzanne Williams Moore, Lisa Williams Pendleton and Mary Duke Chambers McCartt; one nephew, D.M. Chambers III; sister-in-law, Teenie Duke Chambers. Several very special great nieces and nephews.

    The graveside service for Mrs. Noble will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Wayne Emery, Minister, officiating.

    Charles was a native and lifelong Washington County resident. He was the son of the late Arthur C. and Mary Bennett Ellis.

    Charles was a Brick Mason of forty-six years prior to his retirement.

    He was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church, where he attended the Drive-In Church.

    In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tom Roberts.

    He is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Sharon B. Ellis; his sister, Janet Ellis, Jonesborough; four daughters, Julie Roberts, Amy Brown and husband Chad, Laura Jones and husband Travis, all of Jonesborough, Carrie Nidiffer and husband Jim, Johnson City; a step-daughter, Renee Fleenor, Bakersville, NC; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

    The funeral service will be conducted Friday, November 9, 2018, at 2:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Dr. Michael Oaks and Rev. Scott Thompson, officiating. Special music will be provided by Kathy Thompson.

    The graveside committal service will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Chad Brown, Travis Jones, Garrison Brown, Larry, Matthew and Jordan Evans. Honorary pallbearers are Kolby Jones, Lowell Green and Glen Whittington. Special music will be provided by Jon Shell, Bagpiper.

    JOHNSON CITY - Nancy G. Collins, age 85, of Johnson City, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, February 25, 2019.

    Nancy was the daughter of the late W. Dudley and Myrtle Grindstaff.

    She was a graduate of University of Tennessee and a retired dietician from Johnson City Medical Center.

    In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Collins in 2013 and grandchildren, David Noah & Hannah Grace Hoffman.

    Nancy is survived by daughters, Clark Collins of Johnson City, Eve Hoffman and husband Jim of Roswell, GA, and Elizabeth Carmack and husband Gary of Johnson City, several cousins, nieces, nephews and sister in law, Sandra Collins.

    Nancy's family wishes to thank the staff of Amedisys. It is with deepest gratitude and love that they would also like to extend a very special thank you to Jodi Shaffer, Michelle Crowell and Chaplain Steven Spell.

    Nancy requested a graveside service to be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 P.M.

Following his retirement he was employed at Chaparral Pontiac-Buick and GMC, Johnson City. Kenneth was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years: Diane Lynn Weese DeLoach, October 2, 2013, a brother: Burlus DeLoach and a niece: Brandy Ann Hicks, a great nephew: Zack Brugh.
    Survivors include his Children: Donna DeLoach, Elizabethton, Bryan DeLoach and wife Dawn, Gray and Shanna Roark and fiancé Brad Kirk, Telford. His Grandchildren: Gavin Roark, Gage DeLoach, Lola DeLoach, Harleigh DeLoach and Kendal DeLoach. Juanita was born in Carter County to the late JG DeLoach and Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. In addition to her parents, Juanita was also preceded in death by her daughter, Brandy Ann Hicks; her oldest brother, Burlus J. DeLoach and another brother, Kenneth M. DeLoach.
    Juanita retired from Kennametal as a machinist and was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Jonson City.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David M. Hicks, of the home; a sister, Dorothy F. Cooper (Dennis) of Athens, TN; a brother, Victor S. DeLoach (Judy) of Elizabethton, TN; a special adopted son, Charlie Norman (Beth) of Elizabethton; and a lifelong friend, Paula “Polly” Jones Grindstaff. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
    A graveside service to honor the life of Juanita DeLoach Hicks will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Hobbie McCreary officiating.
