    PVT. PHILLIP TOLLEY
    The body of Pvt. Phillip Tolley, who was killed March 5, 1944, at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, arrived in Johnson City this morning.
    Pvt. Tolley was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Tolley of Hampton.
    He attended grammar school at Tiger Valley and high school at Hampton. He was employed at American Bemberg Corp. spinning room at the time he went into the Army. Pvt. Tolley entered service on Dec. 29, 1942, and took his training at Camp David and Fort Fisher, N.C. He was sent overseas September 1943, with the Hq. Batry, 469th Coast Artillery and was with the 469 until his death.
    Survivors are the parents; two brothers, Zeke and Raymond Tolley of Hampton; one sister, Ethel Tolley, Hampton; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Betty Holman, Roan Mountain.
    Funeral services will be conducted at the Little Doe Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with the Rev. W. W. Bean officiating.
    Active pallbearers will be selected from the American Legion Post No. 49 and Capt. Lynn Folsom Post No. 2166 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Full military honors will be rendered at the grave by these two posts.
    Flower bearers will be Misses Voretta Whitehead, Martha Robinson, Jean Townsend, Jewel Sells, Sally Cates, Jean Whitehead, Cartha Hill and Mesdames Byrd Clark, Carl Teague, Dox Street, Monta Hill, Hensley Clark, Wayne Carlton, Joe Whitehead and Oscar Cox.
    The body will be returned to the home of his parents at Route 1 Hampton, this afternoon. Roy Hathaway Funeral Home is in charge.

    ELIZABETHTON — Raymond Tolley, 88, Elizabethton passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, in the Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Dave & Julie Hilman Tolley. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for 32 years and retired from Kennametal. Raymond was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Pauline Haldren Tolley; two sisters, Ruth Tolley and Ethel Hayes; and two brothers, Phillip Tolley and Zeke Tolley.

    Survivors include a son, Adrian Raymond Tolley; his nephews, Billy Tolley, Johnson City, Dean Tolley, and Douglas Tolley both of Elizabethton, Zeke Tolley, Jr., Hampton and Jimmy Calfee, Hilton Head, South Carolina; his nieces, Patsy Johnson Elizabethton and Aleta Williams, Danville, Virginia; his sister-in-law, Mary Tolley, Elizabethton.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Fowler officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be: Gary Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Dean Tolley, Zeke Tolley, Jr., Walt Slagle and Henry Williams.

    The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center, The Staff & Dr. Jaishankar Onocology office, Johnson City and members of the Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

    Mrs. Payne was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 40
    years of service. She was a faithful member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist
    Church.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Payne will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19,
    at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Sam Ferguson, Rev. Shane Waters and Rev.
    Troy Davis officiating. Music will be provided by the Generation Gap. Graveside services and interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie & Lockie Hilman Tolley. She was a retired employee of Texas Instruments after 18 years of service, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church.

    She loved to garden, read and work in her flowers.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Hyder; two sisters: Leafie Payne, Alpha Tipton; and three brothers: Mack, Julius, Paul Tolley.

    Survivors include her daughter: Sandra Forbes and fiancé, Jimmy Stevens; Her sisters & brothers who she dearly loved: Shirl Davis, Geneva Roberts, of Hampton, and Mahala Hampton, of Alabama; Three Brothers: Wade Tolley and wife, Linda, Herman Tolley and wife, Shonette, and Jack Tolley, all of Hampton; Several nieces & nephews; A Sister-in-law: EllaJay Tolley; Her extended special family, The Hyder Family; Her special friends: Bob & Nancy Fillers, George & Brenda Roberson.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2012, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sam Ferguson officiating.

    Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by her niece, Sheridan Seigler. He was born October 17, 1931 in Carter County to the late Charlie & Lockie Hilman Tolley. Jack was a graduate of Hampton High School, East Tennessee State College and the University of Tennessee with a Masters Degree in Education. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher and coach at Cloudland High School, a Counselor at Cloudland High School and served as Principal at Cloudland High School and was a Supervisor of Special Education in Carter County making a total of 45 years in the education field. He loved farming, gardening and loved people and outdoors. Jack was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. He was a US Army Veteran and had also worked at Brown’s Supermarket in Hampton for many years. He was a Master Gardner and loved to give things out of the garden away. In earlier years he attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Shonette Cutlip Tolley who passed away July 24, 2016; by a granddaughter: Amber Shaw Calhoun; and also 10 brothers and sisters.

    Survivors include his children: Keith (Wendy Hill), Patty (Garry Smith), and Leon (Rebecca). His grandchildren: Tracy (Jeff) Guy, Mitchell (Maggie), R.J. and Ezra Tolley and Sarah Hill, His great-grandchildren: Lane and Timber Shaw and Jeffrey, River, and Rudy Guy, a loving sister: Shirl Davis and several nieces and nephews. She had lived in Alabama for a number of years. Mrs. Hampton was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Sgt. Mathey G. Cole and M.B. Hampton, and by three brothers and three sisters. Those left behind to cherish her memory include her son, Jeff Hampton, and her daughters, Jennifer Farrow, Jill Hampton and Joy Hampton. He was a member of the Tacoma Church of God and had served in the U.S. Navy, the Army Air Force and had retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years.

    Survivors include: his wife, Ethel Whitley Sells, of the home; a son, William A. Sells, of Umatilla, Florida; a daughter, Catherine Waldene Sells Sifford, of Telford; two sisters, Pauline Cox and Jewel Harlan, both of Johnson City; two grandchildren, Shane Sifford, of Jonesborough, and Brandy Sifford of Johnson City; two great grandchildren, Daniel Jay Sifford and Hannah Morgan Sifford, both of Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews.

    A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, December 23, 2006, at the Morris-Baker Funeral Home North Chapel at 8:00 p.m. under the direction of Rev. Wayne Absher and Rev. John Shriver. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until time of service at eight. A committal service will be conducted on Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at the Mt.     She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late William Abraham and Hattie Tolley Sells. Mrs. Cox was a secretary with the former Volunteer Natural Gas Company, now Atmos Energy, for over 27 years. She was a member of Tacoma Church of God for over 60 years. Mrs. Cox was a soft spoken, kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt.

    In addition to her parents, her husband, Oscar Cox; her son, Bobby Gene Cox; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Cox; sisters, Jewell Sells Harlan and Agnes Arney; a brother, A. Jay Sells; a brother-in-law, James Lee Harlan, and a nephew William Andrew Sells preceded her in death.

    Survivors include a grandson and his wife, Mr. & Mrs. Rob Cox, of Indiana; two great granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Sidney Cox, of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews including Jan Harlan Gibbons and Bobby of Kingsport, James Lee Harlan II and Donna of Jonesborough; Walden Sells Sifford and Tony of Jonesborough; and a sister in law, Ethel Sells of Johnson City.

    Robert Clark, age 84, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Friday, February 15, 2013, at Centerville Nursing and Rehab in Centerville.

    He was born September 7, 1928, in Hampton, Tennessee, to Arthur and Nola (Tolley) Clark.

    After graduating from high school in the spring of 1946, Robert enlisted in the United States Army. During his two year span with the Army, Robert was stationed in Vienna, Austria, where he ran a hotel for both officers and transits.

    He later enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Norfork, Virginia and Olathe, Kansas. Robert was a cook and ran the NCO Club at the naval airbase in Olathe. At the end of his naval career, he was in charge of a galley with the USS Gearing DD710 medical fleet. Robert was medically discharged from the Navy in 1955. He served his country honorably for nearly a decade.

    Robert married Mary "Delores" Marchello on September 23, 1949, and to this union three children were born. He later married Sherry Blomgren on December 31, 1985, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville.

    Following his military career, Robert moved to Centerville in 1955. It was during this time period that he began working part time with the postal service. His career eventually became full time during the mid- to late 1950s. Robert was appointed as the acting Centerville postmaster in 1968. He served the Centerville Community faithfully until his retirement from the post office in December of 1989.

    Robert was very active in numerous groups during his lifetime. He was an active member of the Jaycees. When he had returned from the Service in 1955, Robert and other farmers used their equipment to clean up and expand the Lelah Bradley Park in Centerville. He was also both a member and president of the Appanoose County Fair Board for several years. Robert was proud to be a member of NAPUS (National Association of Postmasters of United States). He was also a member of Mystic American Legion Post #340. Robert was proud to be a Shriner. During his time with the Shriners, he helped introduce the shriner's cars in the Pancake Day Parade in the early 1970s.

    Most importantly, Robert was a devout Christian. He was an active member of the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia, Iowa.

    He enjoyed numerous hobbies and passions. Robert loved traveling, including several trips to Alaska. During his time in Alaska he often enjoyed the Fiddle Festival in Fairbanks, as well as the Yukon Quest Dog Race. He also made many trips to Tennessee to visit both family and friends. He loved catering for people and was well known for striking up friendships wherever he went. Robert was also known for being an author in which he wrote numerous books on his family history.

    He is survived by his wife, Sherry Clark, of Centerville, Iowa; six children, Brad (Mary) Clark, Bruce (Cathy) Clark, Bryon (Margaret) Clark, Steve Bunch, Kevin Bunch and Michelle (Hugh) Scieszinski; fifteen grandchildren, Jenny (Jake) Bates, Seth (Megan) Clark, Michael (Molly) Clark, Megan (Colby) Law, Nathan Clark, Tasha (Terry) Schnathorst, Eric Clark, Gerald Clark, Stephan Bunch, Katie (Bryce) Oswalt, Whitney (PJ) Tedford, Susanne Scieszinski, Jacob Scieszinski, Mallory Scieszinski, and Jayden Scieszinski; eight great grandchildren, Narayan Funk-Clark, Calla and Annaliese Bates, Liam and Julia Clark, and Leah, Abi, Elayna Tedford; and a brother, Byrl (Kansas) Clark, of Hampton, Tennessee.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings, Mildred Delena and Arvil Clark.

    Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday morning, February 19, 2013, at the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene, Moravia, Iowa, with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating.

    Friends may call from 1 PM until 8 PM Monday, February 18, 2013, with family there from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Lange Funeral Home & Crematory in Centerville.

    Burial will be in the Felkner Cemetery, west of Centerville, with full military honors.

    Byrl Lester Clark, 96, fought the good fight of faith and left his Earthly home and moved his forwarding address to Heaven on January 26, 2023. He was born on June 29, 1926, to the late Arthur and Nola Clark in Hampton, TN. Byrl was a proud US Navy Veteran during World War II. In 1944, he left high school at the age of 17 and voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Seaman on the USS Atlanta, which was the first American ship to bomb Japanese Homelands during WWII. Byrl was retired from North American Rayon (33 years) and East Tennessee State University (10 years). He and Kansas enjoyed many years of retirement traveling with family and friends. Also, he enjoyed tending to his cattle, gardens and his Clark Family Farm, while enjoying his many beloved dogs.

    He is survived by his loving wife of 6 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Linda Abel (Larry Sr, his loving son-in-law); his son, Byrl Clark, Jr and his son Jeff Clark; his grandchildren, Larry Abel, Jr (Kim), Deanna Abel Johnson, Chris Clark, Joy Abel, Kelsey Johnson, Amanda Clark, Keaton Johnson, Jessica Clark Madden, Beckett Clark, Gabriella Clark and Baylen Clark; his stepchildren; Angel Wilson (Adam), BJ Payne, Michael Payne (April) and step grandchildren Maura Trice (Tim), Eddie Trice, Gabby Trice, Raymond Wilson, Makayla Payne, Madison Payne, Alyssa Payne, Lee Payne and Taylor Smith and several special nephews, nieces and cousins and a two very special friends who were like daughters; Judy Broyles and Judy Herrell Stocton. Byrl is preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Kansas Garland Clark; his brother, Robert Clark; daughter-in-law, Linda Clark; sister-in-law Ida Lee Kelly (Chuck) and brother-in-law, Bobby Garland (Tommie Sue) and a baby brother, Arvel Clark and a baby sister, Mildred Clark.

    Byrl was a proud member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton, TN. He was honored and proud to be a member of his church. One of the many highlights of his year was the honor to carry the American flag during the Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day services at his church, where he will carry one last time during his Celebration of Life Service at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. Receiving of family and friends will be Sunday January 29 from 5:00-7:00pm with the service following at 7:00. The Graveside services will take place at Berry Cemetery in Simerly Creek on Monday, January 30 at 11:00am. The services will be officiated by Pastor Randy Johnson and Pastor Mark Potter. Music will be provided by Joy Abel, Rob Montgomery, Teresa McKinney, Jim Matheson, Jeff Snyder and church musicians.

    Pallbearers will be Larry Abel Jr, Chris Clark, BJ Payne, Adam Wilson, Michael Payne, Joel Street, Zeke Tolley Jr., Kevin Kelly and Joseph Smithdeal.

    Douglas Carroll Tolley (Bubba), age 75, of Elizabethton, left his loved ones for his perfect life in Heaven on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 from Hermitage Nursing Home. He no longer has any disabilities, no more pain! He is whole!

    Doug loved his family, his friends, his neighbors, watching westerns, riding his bicycle, his birthday, Christmas and eating out. Doug loved going to his church, Hunter First Baptist, where he was a member.

    Doug was born September 23rd, 1944 to Mary Cornett Tolley and the late Zeke Tolley, Sr. In addition to his dad, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Tolley; his grandparents, Dave and Julie Hilman Tolley and Frank and Myrtle Stevens Cornett.

    In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brothers, Billy Tolley, Sr, Dean (Louise) Tolley and Zeke (Charlene) Tolley, Jr.; his nieces, Toria Tolley, Tina Tolley McConnell, Diana Tolley Greenway, Tammy Tolley, Alison and Gretta Arnold; and his nephews, Gregory Tolley, Bily Tolley II, Tom McConnell, Bobby Tolley, Stephen Tolley and David Tolley; and eleven great nieces and nephews, also survive.

    A service to celebrate Douglas’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 5, 2020 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Reverend Steven Nauman, officiating. Music will be provided by Patty Hodge. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday or at the residence at any time.

    The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be his nephews, Gregory Tolley, Tom McConnell, Billy Tolley, II, Bobby Tolley, Stephen Tolley and David Tolley. Honorary pallbearers will be his friends and neighbors, his church family, Estel Whitehead, Jerry Whitehead, Allen Goodwin, Jon Byrd, Gary Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Adrian Tolley, Richard Davenport, Joshua Bowers, Frank Bowers, William Trivett, Randall Lewis, R.L. Miller, George Collins, Ronnie Townsend, Steve Foltz, Jeff Chambers and Doug Phillips.

    Doug’s family would like to thank Dr. Chakradhav M. Reedy for his medical care and concern beyond the office and the faithful friend and neighbor, Patsy Ballard for all he love and care she showered on Doug for so long.

    ‘I LOVE YOU’ Adrian Raymond Tolley, 71, Elizabethton, went to be with his Lord unexpectedly Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the residence of his cousin and her husband Patsy “Sis” & Gary Johnson. Adrian was born January 5, 1950 in Carter County to the late Raymond & Pauline Haldren Tolley. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. Adrian loved to attend his church where he was a member, Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. He loved Gospel Music, Model Cars, going to the Beach and spending time with his family.

    A Service to Celebrate the life of Adrian Tolley will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 22, 2021 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with his longtime friend and Pastor Bobby Stout officiating. The Eulogy will be given by Debbie Burchette. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Scott Hayes officiating. Music will be provided by Tawana Holland.     Roma Jean Mathes, age 81, of Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Paul Tolley and Goldie Carver Hall and was born on August 14, 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Gene Mathes; one son, John Paul Mathes and her step-father, Luther Hall.

    Roma Jean was a devoted wife, mother and nanny. She was a determined woman of faith and was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church. She enjoyed watching college basketball, especially Duke and cooking for her family.

    Those left to cherish her memory include three children, Debbie Bunton and husband Jimmy, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and girlfriend Debbie Buckles all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, April Fox and husband Mark of Vass, NC, J.P. Mathes and wife Leona of Elizabethton, Cody Bunton and wife Andrea of Jonesborough, Jeanna Brewer and husband Nathaniel of Gray, Kristin Mathes and Jagger Mathes both of Elizabethton and four great-grandchildren. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and neighbors also survive.

    The family will be holding a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Miller Cemetery located next to the State Line Drive-In.

    HAMPTON - John Paul, age 60, and wife, Robin Renee Sells Mathes, age 47, Hampton, Tn. passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at Watauga Lake. They were camping when the storm came through.

    Robin had lived in Georgia for several years but was a native of Bristol, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Ringgold, Georgia High School. She was associated with her husband in the operation of The Hamptons Camp Ground. Robin and John Paul loved camping, fishing, the outdoors and their family. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

    She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl T. Sells, Sr. & Mayme Ruth Sells, T.G. & Vivian Gibson Hickman; her Uncles, Samuel (Sam) David Sells and Marty Hickman.

    Survivors include her son & daughter-In-Law, Justin Ryan & Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia; her daughter, Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; her step-son, J.P. & Wife Leona Mathes, Johnson City; her grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; her father & step-mother, James E. "Jim" & Kim Sells, Elizabethton; her mother & step-father, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; her brother & sister-in-law, James E.     ELIZABETHTON - Brian Keith Mathes, age 54, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with the Lord and family and friends who have passed before him on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Gene and Roma Jean Mathes. Brian was a graduate of Hampton High School and a member of Hampton Christian Church. He loved bass fishing, Nascar and bluegrass music. He was a brave and positive individual even when faced with a serious illness. Brian will be remembered as a kind hearted man and will be missed by many.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Paul Mathes and grandparents, John and Callie Mathes, Luther and Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley.

    A memorial service to celebrate the life of Brian will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 04, 2022 at Beck Mountain Baptist Church, 2797 Siam Rd, Elizabethton, TN 37643 with Reverend Ronnie Campbell and Mr. Dwayne Calhoun officiating. Music will be under the direction of JP and Leona Mathes.
