Carrie Lee Buchanan Higgins, 97, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 21, 2022, surrounded by family.
She was born on December 14, 1924, one of eleven children of the late Martha McKinney Buchanan and the late Eden V. Buchanan. She grew up in the Powdermill Community of Avery County. Carrie attended the local schools and at the age of 18 moved to the Detroit area to find work.
Carrie is survived by her two children, Janet Lee Langlois and her husband, Leroy and Harold R. Higgins Jr and his wife, Cheryl. She is survived by six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Carrie is also survived by two sisters, Doris Matthews of Asheville, NC and Lucy Smith of the Ingalls Community in Avery County, along with several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Harold; four brothers, Albert Buchanan, Richard Buchanan, Ralph Buchanan, and Sanford Buchanan; and four sisters, Mabel Freeman, Alma Campbell, Amanda Jones, and Mary Buchanan.

Lawrence J. Buchanan, age 79, of Buck Hill, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2019, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Elbridge and Etta Dellinger Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by his first Wife: Sandra Benfield Buchanan, and his second Wife: Mary "Lucille" Burleson Buchanan; Granddaughter: Macie Cassandra Buchanan; Brothers: Marvin Buchanan and Clinton Buchanan; Sisters-in-law: Martha Bowman Buchanan and Grace Buchanan; Brother-in-law: Doug Burleson and Daughter-in-law: Peyton Buchanan.

Lawrence was a member of Big Meadows Missionary Baptist Church and also enjoyed attending Emmaus Baptist Church. Lawrence loved working in shrubbery, logging, digging ginseng and hunting.

Surviving are his Children: Randall Buchanan and special friend, Bea Hemmings, of Morganton; Ronald Buchanan and wife, Andrea, of Buck Hill; Stanley Johnson and wife, Joyce, of Hickory; Rodney Johnson and wife, Donna, of Greenwood, SC; Gaylene Potter and husband, Donnie, of Cranberry; and Michael Johnson and wife, Joyce, of Johnson City, Tenn.; Siblings: Ted Buchanan of Newland, Beulah Burleson of Spruce Pine, Patsy Bowman and husband, Frank, of Newland, and Doris Grindstaff and husband, Gary, of Newland; Sister-in-law: Marie Buchanan of Spruce Pine; Grandchildren: Trevor Buchanan, Kristan Powell (Taylor), Samuel Buchanan, Tyler Buchanan (Lacey), Dawson Buchanan, Silas Buchanan, Eli Buchanan, Mikey Johnson (Kim), Josh Milewski, Taylor Potter (Sydnee Sutton), Dustin Potter, and four great-grandchildren. Several other extended family members also survive.

Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, in Big Meadows Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Wesley Duncan and Rev. Luther Carver officiated. The family received friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial followed in the Pyatte Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randall Buchanan, Ronald Buchanan, Trevor Buchanan, Tyler Buchanan, Samuel Buchanan, Dawson Buchanan, Silas Buchanan, Eli Buchanan, Taylor Powell and Taylor Potter.

Ted Buchanan, age 70, of the Altamont Community, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 9th, 2019 at Watauga Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Elbridge and Etta Dellinger Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by his Wife: Martha Bowman Buchanan, who passed away in 2013; Brothers: Marvin, Clinton and Lawrence Buchanan; Sisters-in-law: Sandra Benfield Buchanan, Lucille Burleson Buchanan and Grace Clark Buchanan; and a Brother-in-law: Mike Duncan. Ted was a US Army Veteran, having served in the Vietnam Era. He was a member Big Meadows Baptist Church who loved to bear hunt and fish.

Surviving is his Son: Aaron Buchanan and wife, Candi, of Jonas Ridge; Sisters: Beulah Burleson of Spruce Pine, Patsy Bowman and husband, Frank, of Newland and Doris Grindstaff and husband, Gary, of Newland; Aunt: Maxine Bartlett of Spruce Pine; Sisters-in-law: Shirley Duncan of Altamont and Marie Buchanan of Spruce Pine; and Brother-in-law: Melvin Bowman and wife, Glenda, of Altamont. Numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family also survive.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, in Big Meadows Baptist Church. Rev. Wesley Duncan and Pastor Keith Russell officiated. The family received friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. A private burial was held in the Bowman Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randall Buchanan, Ronald Buchanan, Melvin Bowman, Lance Wright, Travis Daniels and Seth Benfield.

Yvonne Buchanan McKinney, age 81, of Aretis Lane in Newland, the Roaring Creek community, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born on April 23, 1937, in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Richard C. and Aretis Pritchard Buchanan. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Austin McKinney, who passed away in 1997.

Yvonne was a member of the Powdermill Baptist Church and was retired from the Avery County School System. She liked to laugh; she enjoyed her family, friends, and having company in her home. She loved her family and grandchildren and spending time with them.

Left to cherish her memories are her sons: Larry McKinney and wife, Kim of Wilmington, NC, and Terry 'Chub' McKinney of Little Henson Creek; her daughters: Andrea McKinney of Roaring Creek and Sandra Williams and husband, Edward of Drexel; her sister: Sandra Lance of Roaring Creek; her brother: Charles Buchanan and wife, Brenda of Plumtree; her grandchildren: Richard McKinney, Matthew McKinney, Joshua Sparks, Bryce McKinney and Noah Hicks; and her great grandchild: Shyla McKinney.
