Jacob Snyder, 84, died in Grace Hospital, Banner Elk, N. C., Saturday, May 14, following a short illness.
He was a prominent farmer of Johnson County and a member of the First Baptist Church of Mountain City.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. James H. Wilson of Shouns; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the Antioch Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. A. E. Browne and Rev. Keene Roark officiating.
Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery.

Mrs. Ida Snyder Pardue, age 94, of Camp Joy Road, Zionville, passed away Tuesday afternoon. She was a daughter of the late Ira Washington and Elizabeth Amanda Dowell Snyder. Ida was a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, canning, flowers, taking care of her grandchildren and family, and reading her Bible. She attended Antioch Baptist Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Margaret Grindstaff and husband Danny of Mountain City, Helen Pardue of Zionville, Patsy Courtner and husband Jerry of Mountain City, and Wanda Eldreth and husband Bobby of Boone, three sons, R. C. Pardue and wife Pat, Billy Ray Pardue and wife Bitha Lou and Danny Pardue and wife Christina all of Zionville, one sister, Flora Hess and husband John of Mountain City one brother, Claude Snyder of West Grove, PA, sixteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Will Pardue, two sons, Ronnie Pardue and J. C. Pardue and wife Frances, two sisters, Annie Morefield and Fannie Wilson, and five brothers, Charles, Stanley, Arthur, Eddie and John Snyder.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Betty Jane Howard, 83, of 2135 Antioch Road in Mountain City went home to be with the Lord Jan. 29, 2018, after a long illness.

She was the wife for 60 years of Clint Howard, an accomplished musician and storyteller, who predeceased her in 2011. She and her husband lived briefly (in the late 1950s) in Newport News, Va., where he worked for the shipyard.

She was sweet, gentle, tender, kind and soft spoken. She was proud of her mountain heritage.

Betty Jane had three children: Patsy Robinson Timbs (wife of Larry Timbs Jr.); Ray Clinton Howard; and Clarence (who passed away in 2007).

The daughter of the late Rayburn and Ethel Snyder of Ashe County, N.C., also had two sisters— Doll (deceased), who was married to Waldo Parker of West Grove, Penn.; and Corena Snyder (married to the late Howard Snyder of Creston, N.C.) Her brother, Darrell "Darl" Snyder (married to Josephine) of Creston, N.C., survives.

The late Sam Robinson was her son-in-law. Daughter-in-laws Glenda and Debi Howard survive.

She was born and raised in the Brushy Fork community of Ashe County and attended Riverview High School there.

Betty Jane, a long-time active member of Antioch Baptist Church until her illness in 2011, had worked at Lecos, later to become Levis, where she made many friends and retired after 36 years.

She is survived by seven grandchildren: Rachel Robinson Shearin (and husband John), Clint Robinson(and wife Shannon), Garet Howard (and wife Briana), Brad Howard, Sandra McCloud (and husband Larry), Ashley Howard-Forbes (and husband William Forbes), and Hana Rae Howard. One other grandchild, Mitchell Howard, died in 2002.

In addition, Betty Jane is survived by 15 great grandchildren: Blake and Weston Robinson; Taylor, Hannah, Jessie and Samantha Shearin; Will and Leah McCloud; Portia, Sully and Ruby Howard; Travis and Hank Howard; Nixon and Nash Forbes.

Betty Jane had one nephew, one deceased nephew and five nieces.

Heartfelt appeciation to special friends and caregivers Sandra Blevins and Barbara Bunten.

She loved her church and reading her Bible. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, cooking, taking care of her home and yard, porch sitting and helping her husband Clint tend to his cows and tobacco.

She always looked forward to celebrating birthdays, holidays and other special occasions with her family.

Even when she became ill a few years ago, she enjoyed the warmth of the sunshine, gazing at the sky, walking, and taking in the magnificent mountain scenery of her beloved home community.

Her daughter Patsy, who did all she could to take care of her mother the last few years of her life, remembers her mom as "coming to my hospital bed 49 straight days when I had a stroke at the age of 13."

Patsy said that she was "the mom and grandmother who was always willing to lend a hand, the dear friend and neighbor who never said or did anything to hurt anyone. This is the mama I've missed these past few years and will grieve until I see her in Heaven. I believe my mom followed Christ in the factory, in the church and in her community. She was controlled by the Holy Spirit and she was Christ's ambassador wherever God led her.

"How great is God to have given me such a mother."

The family will receive friends at Betty Jane's home at 2135 Antioch Road in Mountain City.

Funeral services for Betty Jane Howard will be 2:00 PM Thursday February 1st 2018 at the Antioch Baptist Church of 117 Antioch Road in Mountain City, with the Rev. Kenny Ray Vaught officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:00 PM prior to the service. Music will be provided by family and friends.

Hux & Lipford Funeral Home of Mountain City is in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services will be at the Reece Memorial Cemetery in Mountain City. Betty Jane will be laid to rest next to her husband, Clint Howard.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons.

Jone Elizabeth Thomas, age 75 of West Brushy Fork Road, Zionville, NC passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Watauga Medical Center. Jone was born on June 14, 1944 in West Jefferson, NC to the late Coy Snyder and Edith Dowell Snyder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Thomas; son, Ricky Thomas and brother, Carl Snyder.

Jone was a very loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed talking to her friends and going camping with her family. She also enjoyed singing and listening to gospel and bluegrass music. She was of the Christian faith.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Cindy Thomas Dolinger and husband Randy; sister, Phyllis Lewis and husband Jim, Nell Shelton and husband J.B.; grandchildren, Kristen Yates, Kellie Dolinger; great grandchildren, Aaron Dolinger, Natileigh Dolinger, Madison Yates, Kaitlyn Yates, Matthew Yates and special friend, James Potter.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Riverview Missionary Baptist Church in Creston, NC. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Evan Moore officiating.

David Snyder David Clarence Snyder, age 91, of Shady Valley, Tennessee and a resident of Mountain City Care Center, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Mountain City Care Center. He was born on January 26, 1919 to the late Fred and Margaret Phillips Snyder. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his first wife, Flora Etta Snyder; and infant daughter; three sisters; three brothers and his second wife, Virginia Nelle Potter Snyder.
David was retired from the Tennessee Highway Department and loved farming. He was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church.

NEWPORT NEWS - Hazel Howard Congdon, age 98. On the sunny afternoon of June 28 1937, Hazel Howard of Mountain City Tennessee and Edmond Congdon of Erwin Tennessee left the campus of East Tennessee State Teachers College. They were married by a justice of the peace in Gates City, Virginia before returning to campus. This small school in Johnson City, Tennessee prepared both for a lifetime of teaching in the public school systems of Erwin, Tennessee, then Vinton, Petersburg, and Colonial Heights, Virginia. In 1965 Edmond was appointed director of the new technical vocational center for the Peninsula area (VoTech) and Hazel resumed teaching in Newport News Elementary Schools until her retirement. Although widowhood befell Hazel in 1997, she continued to enjoy her home, family, neighbors, friends and former students until a fall this spring forced her to leave home and be lovingly cared for by her family and devoted rehab staff until she passed comfortably on June 30, 2013, a day after the 76th anniversary of her marriage. Although predeceased by parents Roby J. and Hallie S. Howard, husband Edmond and sister, Hester Williams many are left to remember and mourn the loss. Among them are daughters Janet Coon, Jeanne Evans (Jack), grandsons Brian (Cynthia) Evans, Marc Evans, Great Grandsons Dylan and Casey Evans, younger siblings Trula Muse, Eula (Walter) Adams, Roby Howard, Jr. (Dottie), Earl Howard, Lois Ann Adams, Malcolm (Sue) Howard, 22 nieces and nephews and their offspring. Hazel hoped her legacy would be the gifts of love, devotion, knowledge and wisdom passed along to her and that she lovingly shared with all who came within the scope of her entire life. Those very gifts were returned in the care she was given. A grateful thank you is extended to wonderful neighbors, Visiting Angel Cassandra Rome and the wonderful medical staff of The Chesapeake. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 A.M. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Congdon and Hester Williams.

She was a native of Johnson County, Tennessee. She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and prayed daily for those she loved; family, friends, and neighbors. Her desire was that all whom she met would come to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Survivors include, her husband of 72 years, Walter G. Adams; four children, William R. Adams, DDS and wife Sacha, Joseph Adams and wife Jody, Trudy A. Kittle and husband Kim, and Gregory L. Adams, M.D. and wife Carol; 19 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Trula Muse and Lois Ann Adams; and brothers, Roby Howard Jr. and wife Dottie, Malcolm Howard and wife Sue all of Mountain City, Earl Howard of Shady Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at First Christian Church in Mountain City.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Graveside service and interment will follow the services from the Mountain View Cemetery in Mountain City.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include her devoted daughter, Cathy Muse, her three sons: John Muse (Kaye), Mountain City, TN; Tom Muse (Kathy), Knoxville, TN and Jim Muse (Terry), Piney Flats, TN; her six grandchildren: Trula Elizabeth O'Dell, Johnson City, TN; Mary Catherine O'Dell Marcum (Colton), Gate City, VA; Marilee Muse Larson (Nathan) Stephens City, VA; Hallie Muse Mahala (Cliff), Mountain City, TN; John Muse, Knoxville, TN; Katie Muse Tucker (Phillip), Alcoa, TN and fifteen great grandchildren, her brothers: Roby Howard, Jr. (Dorothy), Mountain City, TN; Earl B. Trula was a lifetime resident of Johnson County, and like so many of her generation in this community, she grew up on the family farm alongside her seven siblings where happy memories and strong ties were formed. She graduated from JCHS in 1941, went to work at Farmers State Bank and then attended Johnson City Business College, after which she worked at Hamilton Bank in Johnson City. When she returned to Mountain City, she married Jack Muse. They shared 59 years together.

Trula ran the family insurance agency for several years and was a highly competent business woman. She never met a stranger and touched many lives with generous gestures of kindness and encouragement. She had a unique talent for making each person in her life feel special and loved.

She was a dedicated servant of the Lord. Her church, First Baptist, was a very important part of her life. There she served on various committees, taught a Sunday school class for many years and along with Chloe Eads started the first nursery in the mid 50's (to help corral the three rowdy boys). In her later years, Trula enjoyed visits from her family and many friends, and always wore that warm and caring smile.

Her faith always came first. She was a devoted mother who worked diligently to help each of her children achieve success and happiness. But more than anything she was committed to making certain all her children and grandchildren knew the Lord and always put him first in their lives. She shared that message with all she met.

All her family especially appreciate Cathy, who has been an angel by her side and has given selflessly of her time and energy during the past several years.

A grateful thank you is extended to all her caregivers: Frances Brooks, Mary Gale, Mary Ann Gambill, Annie Lee Lowe, Carolyn Ray and other with Amedisys Home Health Care and Silver Angels. Roby Jethro Howard, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 30, 2018, at the Mountain City Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roby J. Howard, Sr. and Hallie Snyder Howard, and his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Gunn Howard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 sisters, Hazel Howard Congdon, Hester Howard Williams, Eula Howard Adams, Trula Howard Muse, and Lois Ann Howard Adams.

Roby J. Howard, Jr. was born in Mountain City, TN, May 30, 1925. He grew up and helped on the family farm on Dry Stone Branch Road. While in elementary school, he was in Boy Scouts and 4H. While he was in Johnson County High School, he was a charter member of FFA and he played first and solo trombone in the band. He was also a member of the Glee Club.

After high school, he worked on the family farm and enlisted in the Merchant Marines and served with the Army Transportation Corps, both in the North Atlantic and South Pacific, during WWII.

In 1947, he entered the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. While in the College of Agriculture, he majored in Poultry and minored in Horticulture and Animal Husbandry. While at UT, he met Dorothy Gunn and they married in McMinnville, TN, July 17, 1949. "Dottie" and Roby lived on the Howard farm for the remainder of their lives.

In 1951, he attended and graduated from North Carolina School of Auctioneering in Kinston, NC. He then auctioned tobacco in Greensboro, NC and briefly in Johnson City. For 12 years, he auctioned for Tri-State Growers' Bean Market. (at the time, the market held the title, "Green Bean Capital of the World.")


In 1954, he established "Howard's Cage Eggs," which serviced the Tri-City area for 26 years. In 1961, he became agent for Johnson County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and in 1978, was elected Secretary-Treasurer and Office Manager.

In 1977, Roby and his brother, Malcolm, purchased Howard Farms, Inc. from their father, R. J. Howard, Sr.

He was a charter member of the Lions Club and he belonged to the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a Master Mason of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge 243 F&AM having achieved fifty plus years in the organization. He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was an elder. He and his wife sang in the choir for over 45 years. They also served as Youth Leaders, taught Sunday School for various age levels and worked in P.E.G., a school camp program for 5th and 6th graders. They also were involved in Tennessee's Bicentennial and Heritage Hall Auditorium Renovation project.

Fayette C. Arnold

MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. -- Mr. Fayette Charles Arnold, age 86, of 3286 Fall Branch
Road, Mountain City, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday,
June 2, 2003, at the Holston Valley Hospital.

He was a native of Johnson County and was born April 19, 1917, to the late
Kelly Arnold and Cliffie Phillips. He was preceded in death by one daughter,
Janice Arnold; one brother, Emitt Arnold; and one sister, Hester Snyder. He was
a member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School
teacher for several years. He was a World War II veteran having served in the
U.S. Army.

Everyone that came to know Fayette loved him. He was a wonderful Christian
husband, father and friend. His gentle spirit will be missed by all.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Margie Dowell Arnold of the
home; two sons: Scotty Arnold, Johnson City; and Kelly Arnold, Johnson City;
six sisters: Rena Brown, Abingdon; Nell Galliher, Johnson City; June Smith,
Bristol Virginia; Inez Wallace, Zionville, N.C.; Vean Reynolds, Charlotte,
N.C.; and Lula Bell Wallace, Baltimore; three brothers: Leavie Arnold, Mountain
City; Dean Arnold, Mountain City; and Danny Arnold, Mountain City; one
grandchild, Sophia Elizabeth Arnold, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, from the Chapel of
the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. David Bentley and Rev Bruce Simcox to
officiate. Music was under the direction of The Fletchers.

Military graveside services were held 1 p.m. Thursday from the Dowell Cemetery
accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were Van Arnold, Frankie Smith, Selmar Potter, Swan Hayes, Ed
Roark, J.R. Arnold and Mike May.

Ora was a dedicated wife of 47 years and a loving mother and grandmother who was a devoted Christian that loved the Lord and her family, especially her only grandson, Philip. Billy Ray Pardue died August 26th, 2019. He was born February 27, 1951 in Watauga County. Billy was an active member, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Antioch Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN. He honorably served four years in the US Air Force and seventeen years in the Army National Guard. Billy retired as a master diesel mechanic for Hollar & Greene Produce. A Christian gentleman, Billy loved his God, family and country. He considered his family his greatest gift and was a loved and respected husband, father and grandfather. He was the best 'PawPaw' to his grandchildren whom he referred to as 'the children God gave him.

Billy is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bitha Kirby Pardue; sons, Jason Pardue and wife, Teresa of Vilas and Jared Pardue of Zionville; daughter, Jessica Greene and husband, Jonathan, of Zionville; grandchildren, Colton and Cadence Greene, Isabella, Adalae and Samuel Pardue; brothers, R.C. Daniel Jarrett Snyder, age 77, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022 in Erwin, TN. Daniel was born on May 17, 1944 to the late David Clarence Snyder and Flora Nelson Snyder.

Daniel was a very kind and giving man. He always wanted to help people any way that he could; he would gladly give someone the shirt off his back. He loved music, his chickens, and wood-working. Daniel had a big heart for animals and fed many strays in his community. He was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church and loved going while he was able.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sisters, Carolyn McCracken and husband Henry of Bristol, TN, Rachel Perdue and husband Henry of Shady Valley, and Linda Potter of Mountain City; nieces and nephews, Diane Grindstaff (Pete) and Shelly Haynes, Michael Garland, William Bishop, and David Bishop.

Jeffrey Cole Howard, 62, was born in Shady Valley, Tennessee on April 25, 1956, to Earl B. Howard, Sr. and the late Capriece Cole Howard. Jeff departed this world to be with the Lord on February 19, 2019, at his residence in Shady Valley, TN.

Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, Capriece Howard (Nov. 10, 1927 – Dec. 22, 2010) and an infant sister, Sarah Elizabeth Howard.

He had a humble kind spirit and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. In his spare time, Jeff enjoyed hands-on activities like cooking, woodworking, artistry, and working on automobiles and other machinery.

ROANOKE, VA - Malcolm Stuart Howard Jr., age 62, of Roanoke, Virginia and formerly of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born on April 22, 1956 to Malcolm Howard Sr. and the late Sue Smith Howard, who passed away June 7th, 2018. In addition to his mother Malcolm was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Malcolm was a 1974 graduate of Johnson County High School. Throughout his school days he was active in football, 4-H Club, Boy Scouts, Drama Club and the FFA. He attended college at ETSU and obtained a degree in banking from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. While Malcolm worked as a banker, he was a true salesman by nature, never meeting a stranger. He sold cars, mobile homes, furniture and antiques. He was co-owner of Donnelly House Antiques and Collectibles for more than 20 years. At the time of his passing, Malcolm was still working in antiques, traveling the country selling through his independent business, High Noon Antiques.

His passion in life was his family, but he also enjoyed football, food (especially a Bizzie Burger) and community theatre. He last performed in a play directed by his mother, entitled 'Our Town'.

Roy “Buck” Salmons, age 76, passed away on November 22, 2022 at his home. Buck was born in Ashe County, NC on January 28, 1946 to the late Reba and Walt Salmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Art and Hollie Greer and Lura Salmons; grandson, Jason Dugger; great granddaughter, Bel Reece and several aunts and uncles.

Buck enjoyed working on cars, motorcycles, bowling, and playing horse shoes and card games, especially poker. He was a millwright for many years and at one time was a newspaper editor. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Buck was a kind a generous man who would do anything for anybody, if he could. He was loved by all that knew him.

Timothy Joe Mahala, age 61, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. Tim was born on February 13, 1960 to the late Joseph “Joe” and Ancil Mahala.

Tim, also known as “Moola”, was a friendly and happy person who was always smiling. He enjoyed collecting things, especially movies, and going to thrift stores. He was of the Baptist faith.
