    Notes:

    Ezra Oliver Cowan, 80, died at his home in the Sugar Grove section of Johnson County, Thursday afternoon after an illness of several months. Mr. Cowan was a native of Johnson County and a member of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
    Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Fronia Cowan of Butler, four sons, Smith of Winston Salem, N.C., Von Ray and Ronda, of Butler and Wiley, of Johnson city; six daughters, Mrs. A.D. greenwell, Mrs. S.H. Dean, Mrs. F.L. Dugger, Mrs.
    Wade Snyder, of Butler; Mrs. C.A. Anderson, of Elizabethton, Mrs. J.J. Stelzer, of Miami, Fla.; thirty three grandchildren, eight great
    grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Sugar Grove Baptist Church, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ronda Earp and the Rev. Victor Trivett officiating. Burial will be made in the family cemetery.
    Active pallbearers will be Warren Dugger, Spencer Guy, Mack Wolf, Wallace Dugger, Glen Dugger and France Holloway. Flower bearers will be selected from friends. The body will be returned to the home Saturday morning.

    KINGSPORT - Grace C. Stelzer, 90, of 110 Thomas Street, passed away Friday, (November 22, 2002) at Church Hill Health Care and Rehab Center following an extended illness.

    Mrs. Stelzer was a native of Butler, Tennessee and lived in Florida for several years before moving to Kingsport 20 years ago. She was a member of McPheeters Bend Baptist Church.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Stelzer, her parents, Ezra and Fronnie Cable Cowan, grandson, John S. Arnold, sisters, Roxie Greenwell, Flossie Dean, Georgia Anderson, Hazel Dugger and Lucy Snyder, brothers, Ronda Cowan, Wiley Cowan, Von Ray Cowan and Smith Cable.

    She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jerry Arnold, Church Hill; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Beverly Stelzer, Cooper City, Florida; three grandchildren, Jessica Arnold, Kim Cangialosi and husband, Joey; Heather Badami and husband, Tony; two great grandchildren, Tabitha Cangialosi and Tara Cangialosi.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bob Greenwell, Bruce Greenwell, Carl Greenwell, Gervis Greenwell, Lon Greenwell, and sisters, Lois Guy, Jean Swafford, and Margaret Cardina. She was also preceded by three precious sons, Tony H. Ward, Keith William Ward, and Brian “Shorty” Ward.

    Jane was a mother of five. She was a fun, loving, giving, big-hearted person. She always worked hard and found her heart’s calling as a CNA. She enjoyed caring for others and you could see it made her proud and filled her heart to make a difference in the lives of her residents. She was a care giver to young and old, and many called her Mama Jane.

    Jane was also spunky, stubborn, outspoken and didn’t care to tell you what was on her mind. She could tell you what she thought of you and make you love her for it. One thing was for certain, if you ever met Jane, you were sure to love her.

    Those left to cherish her memories include her husband, Herbert Ward; son, Gregory Ward; daughter, Janet Brooks and husband Jesse. She was most proud of all her grandchildren who include her grandson, Adam Ward and wife Tiffany; granddaughters, Courtney Brooks, Brittney Brooks, Sara Ward; great grandchildren, Jania, Renessmae, Zyra Ward. Her sisters, Betty Payne, Gerlene Dugger, Shirley Ainsworth; sisters-in-law, Betty Greenwell, Barb Ward, several nieces and nephews and all those that loved her at Sunset Gardens and Mountain City Care Center.

    The family received friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service followed at 3:00 with Pastor Steven Spencer officiating. The graveside service and burial immediately followed at the Cowan Town Cemetery.

She was born on February 20, 1945 to the late Dewey and Roxie Jane Cowan Greenwell. In addition to her parents, Lois is preceded in death by her daughter, Frances Jean Guy (November 3 2019); sons, Leon Guy and Junior Guy; granddaughter, Roxanne; sisters, Jean Swafford and Margaret Cardena; brothers, Lon Greenwell (Lois’s twin), Gervis (Shorty) Greenwell, Bruce Greenwell, Carl Greenwell, Bob Greenwell; infants, Haggie and James Greenwell.

    Lois is survived by one son, Dwight Greenwell and friend Carnella Matney; one grandson, Dewey Clyde Guy; sisters, Shirley Ainsworth, Jane Ward, Betty Payne, Gerleen Dugger; sister-in-law, Betty Greenwell; several nieces, nephews and cousins; several great nieces and nephews; special friends and neighbors, Charles Norris, Brenda Campbell and Bonnie Curd; Lois’s niece and caregiver, Vickie Turner; caregivers and friends, Larry and Polly Laws.

    There will be a gathering of family and friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Mountain City Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Preacher Chuck Morefield to officiate. Lois will be laid to rest with her daughter at Sugar Grove Church Cemetery.

    JOHNSON CITY - William Thomas "Tom" Cowan, 79, Johnson City passed away Friday, June 8, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.

    A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Wiley T. & Julia Ann Guy Cowan. He worked as an Airport Policeman and a truck driver at Summers-Taylor. Tom was a fifty year member of Johnson City Masonic Lodge # 486, Jericho Shrine where he was a former Roadrunner and the Nolachuckey-Grand View # 194, Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

    Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen Godsey Cowan. Two Children: Tommy R. Cowan, Elizabethton and Kathy Waldrop & Robert Miller, Jonesborough. Five Grandchildren: Valerie Hyatt, Heather Pate, Amber Pate, Whitney Rutledge and Thomas Cowan. Eleven Great Grandchildren.

    Graveside Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2018 in the Cowan Cemetery, Butler with Pastor Jason Hoagland officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
