Mrs. Estella Coffey Barnes, 87, of Route 2, Boone, died Wednesday morning, Nov.27, at her home.

Mrs. Barnes was born Aug. 1, 1898 in Watauga County to Dell Calvin and Mary Jane Bodenhamer. She was the wife of the late Stewart James Barnes. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and had attended the Perkinsville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was employed for many years as the first secretary of the Appalachian Normal School, which later became Appalachian State University. She was a long time hand-weaving crafts person and was a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Surviving are three daughters, one son, one sister, three brothers, and 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted today at 2 p.m. at the Perkinsville Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Mr. Paul Alfred Coffey, 98, of 1900 Hillsmere Lane, Staunton, Va., formerly of Boone, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Loyalton of Staunton, Va.

He was born Dec. 30, 1909 in Watauga County, a son of the late Dell Carlton and Mary Jane Bodenhamer Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was a member of Old Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, and was a farmer.

Graveside services and burial was conducted Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2008, at 3 o'clock at the Old Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Williams of Boone, two granddaughters; Lisa Smith and Michelle Smith both of Charlotte, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Byers, a son-in-law, Johnny Williams, two sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Mary Christine Harrison Critcher, age 90, of Boone, wife of the late Willie Mack "Will" Critcher, died Monday morning, June 6, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

She was born April 15, 1915, in the Bamboo community of Watauga County to the late Newton Leonard and Mary Eliza Harrison Harrison.

Mrs. Critcher was a homemaker and a longtime member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, and two daughters, one stepson, and one stepdaughter.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a number of step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Leonard Harrison and Roland Harrison; two sisters, Clara Pauline Harrison and Ruth Harrison; and a stepdaughter, Lavon Critcher Caudill.

Burial followed in Mount Vernon Church Cemetery.

He is also survived by twenty nine grandchildren, fourty great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Gordon House Elete home for adults, Staff Nurse Orange County Nursing Home, and Charge Nurse for Louisea Nursing home. She was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed Bird watching, and Flower Gardening.

Those left to cherish her memories include: her sons; Michael Gregg (Eva) Mtn City, TN. Jesse Gregg (Misty) Mtn City, TN. Terry Gregg (Faye) Butler, TN. Douglas Coffey, age 89, of Morganton, N.C. passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at his residence.

He was born on March 24, 1929, in Avery County, N.C., a son of the late Ira Vance Coffey and the late Gladys Cooke Coffey.

He was US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was the Owner and Operator of the Texaco at Invershiel at Linville Gap, NC. Doug enjoyed life and his family. He was an avid farmer and gardener. He and his wife, Lillian, spent many years teaching dance lessons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Lyndon Coffey; grandson: Jonathan Cropper; sister: Wilma Greene; brothers: Hundley and Boyd Coffey.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, her husband: SFC Russell Bennett; one sister: Wilma Greene; three brothers: Douglas Coffey, Hundley Coffey, and Boyd Coffey.

Welda enjoyed all types of crafts and gardening. She repurposed everything and never met a thrift store she didn't love. She loved to sing hymns while working. Welda loved to play games and was a fierce competitor, especially in Rook. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves and Duke basketball fan. Her life's passion was her family and she loved every minute spent with them.

Weldon Jerry Critcher, age 68, of 4406 Bamboo Road, Boone, died October 17, 2015. He was born April 15, 1947 in Watauga County, NC. He was a retired homebuilder and custom cabinet maker, and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Weldon served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a collector of antique Studebaker cars and was a member of the Boone Rural Fire Board.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters: Gladys Scalf, Pauline Hodge, and Ann Coffey; and four brothers: Reynold Harrison, James Harrison, Kenneth Harrison, and Roy Wade Harrison. Mr. Harrison owned J.C. Barber & Beauty Supply and was also a barber. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Harrison was a Mason & Shriner.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Frances Hunter Harrison, daughter Deborah McNeill (John), daughter, Cindy Williams, daughter Brenda Townsend (Kevin) all of Johnson City and daughter Lisa Yates (David) of Elizabethton. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Keila Smithpeters (Brian); Stacy Haas (Chris); Adam Williams (Christa), all of Johnson City and Jessie Rasnick (Matt) of Elizabethton and his great grandchildren: Easton, Gibson, Paisley, Sawyer, Cayden, Blaklie, and Annie Mae. Also, left to cherish his memory is Sherry Coffey, sister and Eugene Harrison, brother and several nieces and nephews. Graveside Service will be conducted at 1:45p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Pastor Jason Hoagland, officiating. The Carter County Honor Guard will provide military honors. Burial will follow the service. Active Pallbearers will be Grandsons & Son-in-laws.

Kenneth Howard Harrison I, 72, 518 Academy Street, Elizabethton, Tn.. passed away Monday evening, June 20, 2005, at the V.A. Medical Center Hospital, Asheville, N.C., after a brief illness.

Mr. Harrison was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Spencer Roosevelt and Alice Harvey Harrison.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Jonnie Timbs Harrison, a brother, Roy Wade Harrison, and a sister, Gladys Scalf.

Mr. Harrison was a member and Sunday school teacher of Harmony Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, AARP, and National Republican. He was a prominent Certified Public Accountant in Greene County, along with his wife and business partner, Jonnie Harrison, for many years.

Mr. Harrison was a decorated Korean War veteran of the U.S. Army and also served one tour in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Howard Harrison II and Feather Harrison, Afton; two daughters, Kimberly Franklin and Jeanie Harrison, both of Greene County; three grandchildren, Alvin Franklin Jr., of the U.S. Navy, Keera Franklin and Aaron Franklin, both of Chucky; four brothers, Bill Harrison, Johnson City, Jim Harrison and Reynold Harrison, both of Elizabethton, and Gene Harrison, of Florida; three sisters, Pauline Hodges, Tipp City, Ohio, Ann Coffey, Blowing Rock, N.C., and Sherry Coffey, Elizabethton; special friends, James Timbs, Afton, Gene and Brenda Timbs, Lawrence and Dixie Timbs, Wallace and Geneva Timbs, Fannie Taylor and Retha Hamm, all of Elizabethton, Carl and Marie Shelton, Joe and Shirley Cansler, Eddie and June Farris, Carol Jones and Rex and Vicki Solomon, all of Greeneville, David Peek, Chucky, and Rob Weaver, Greeneville.

Douglas Eugene Gragg, age 72, of Blowing Rock, NC passed peacefully into the waiting arms of Jesus on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018 at his residence.

He was born on June 8, 1946, in Avery County, NC, a son of the late Edward Gragg and the late Hazel Clark Gragg.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandsons and was a carpenter and a nurseryman most of his life. More than anything he loved serving his Lord and preaching His word.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Sister: Essie Elaine Daniels; Brother: William Leon Gragg.

Funeral services for Douglas E. Gragg will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, beginning from the Church of Jesus Christ Linville with Pastor Steve Turbyfill, Evangelist Jerry Grogan and Brother Wayne Gragg officiating. William Leon "Bill" Gragg, age 64, of 119 Valley High Lane, Blowing Rock, died November 9, 2014. He was born February 23, 1950 in Avery County. He was a home builder and a member of The Church of Jesus in Linville, North Carolina.

Bill is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruby South Gragg of the home; his son, David Charles Gragg and fiancée Donna Shaw of Beauville, North Carolina; his daughter, Ruby Kathleen Harrison and Dwayne Harrison of Blowing Rock; a daughter-in-law, Robyn Latham Gragg of Boone; three brothers, Wayne Gragg and wife Francis of Boomer, Eugene Gragg and wife Ada of Avery County, and Charles Gragg of Boomer, and one sister, Carolyn Gragg of Boomer. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Heather Boone and husband Bobby of Boone, Gary "Lee" Gragg, Jr. of Blowing Rock, DeRhonda Pearson and Elaina Killiam, both of Fleetwood, James Gragg of Fleetwood, William Harrison and Piper Harrison, both of Blowing Rock, and four great-grandchildren, Maura Gragg Moretz, Briana Boone, Tara Boone, and Lana Pearson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gary Lee Gragg, Sr.; one grandson, Randall Elijah Harrison, and one sister, Essie Elaine Daniels.

Funeral services were held at The Church of Jesus, in Linville, N.C., officiated by Reverend Steve Turbyfill. Burial in Boone Fork Cemetery, in Blowing Rock, N.C.

Michael Thurston Gregg went home to forever be with our LORD on December 8, 2022, at 2:45 pm. Michael has been a believer and served God since he was nine years old. Michael loved to sing, and he led the youth choir at a local church for many years. He also sang and played the banjo with several bluegrass gospel groups. He taught Sunday School class for the young adults for many years. He currently helped lead a congregation at Olive Branch Fellowship, where he led discussion of the word of God for several years. His main purpose in life was to serve the Almighty Creator God through the accepting of eternal salvation through Yeshua Jesus the Messiah and loving others as he loved himself which he did selflessly. He served his country in the United States Air Force in Vietnam and Thailand as a young man. After his time serving in the military, he chose Information Technology as a lifelong career. He retired from Christian Medical and Dental Association where he served as IT Director, after 22 years. Michael was devoted to his family and was a loving, caring, and devoted husband to his wife Eva Johnson Gregg for 45 years. They have one son, Aaron Thurston Gregg and wife Rebecca. Two grandchildren Eleazar Michael Gregg and Sarah Rebecca Gregg. One foster son, Justin Lamar Johnson, wife Faith and daughter Zoey. Two brothers, Jesse Gregg and wife Misty; Terry Gregg and wife Faye. Honorable mention; Mother-in-law, Olive Johnson and sisters-in-law, Reba Potter, Judy Wallace and JoAnn Eller. Friend, Jimmy Bonifacino and wife Peggy. He was preceded in going home by his Dad, Thurston Gregg and Mother, Patricia Tester Gregg. Michael will be so missed by those that love him. We cant bring him back but we can go to where he is one day.
